Anything that forces you to omit an entire macronutrient group from your nutrition is extreme.   I have found absolutely NO research whatsoever that states that a "true" keto diet allows for any carbohydrates whatsoever.   As a lifelong thing, it is completely unsustainable for the most part.

I dont know what you mean by "true" keto diet but I keep my carbs under 50 grams a day and have had no problems whatsoever staying in ketosis.  For the first several months I kept them under 20 grams a day. My bloodwork is better in all aspects, Ive lost weight, I no longer have severe acid reflux and Ive been able to get totally off three prescription meds.  Please, pray tell, what is not sustainable about that?  Keto doesnt mean total elimination of all carbs.

like @ryano I keep my carbs to under 50 grams a day.  Of course I blew that on my Symphony cruise 🙂 but a few days back with intermittent fasting and I'm 1/2 pound away from my pre-cruise weight.   Keto and intermittent fasting has changed my life.

As for Jamie's ...I've been to a Jamie's on land and it was far from impressive.  I figure of the land restaurant can't wow me - I won't waste my time with it at sea.

I, too, have eaten at one Jamie's (in England) and was not wowed.  I ate at Jamie's on the Anthem a few times and enjoyed it.  Wowed?  No.  Happy? Yes.

I guess I must be strange in that I think the truffle pasta at Jamie's is really good.  I also love their burgers at lunch and the salmon I had there was as good as any I've ever had.

I thought that prior to our cruise on Allure in June that Giovanni's had the best steak  onboard, but this time it was so tough and hard to eat that we never went back there even though we had reservations for a couple of nights.

I am hoping that Jamie's is as good on Harmony in January as it was last January.  We had the UDP and had lunch there 3 days and dinner a couple of nights.

Totally incorrect, that's why people get the wrong idea about it, people like you perpetuate myths about it and have no education whatsoever concerning ketosis in the body.  What macronutrient group are you referring to?

Keto diet must contain 20 or under grams of carb daily consisting of mostly leafy dark green vegetable, although you can eat squashes, all salad ingredients, almost all vegetables except starchy ones like corn, wheat flour, potatoes (white or sweet), rice and pasta.  Some restriction of legumes.  Almost everything else is legal on Keto.  Keto also recommends caloric monitoring, We eat somewhere around 1200 cal. per day.  In addition Intermittent fasting is practiced but not required, with the optimal fast being 16 hrs with no food from 7:00 at night till the first meal of the day around 11:00am.  8 hrs of food consumption.  That's it in a nut shell...it is not only sustainable, but for a lifetime of eating.  Many people already eat this way and have all of their lives.  Keto has brought the diet to the forefront of American conscience because so many of us are obese.  It is a slow weight loss regimen that produces 1  to 2 consistent lbs of weight loss each week and promotes optimal health as I have already told you.  My GP thinks I am a hero and said "Whatever you're doing, keep on doing it!"  He only has a handful of obese and diabetic patients who have sustained the results I have over 2 quarters of checkups.  Maybe you should do some REAL research before you hit the blogs with your totally bogus claims.  BTW, My cardiologist is on board with it as well as my LDL cholesterol as been reduced and my HDL increased over this period.  My A1C has consistently been 6.2 or lower and before I started Keto was as high as 10.6.  In fact, nothing YOU could say will prevent me from eating this way for the rest of my life.  Sorry, but no cigar.....

And to all of the rest of you, sorry that this discussion has been highjacked, but no way was I going to let this person's lack of education on this subject be perpetuated.

Congratulations, I couldn't stay in Ketosis with that many, I have to stay under 20 for the while, but next year, I plan on hitting my goal weight and then I will have to add back carbs.  It has totally changed my life also.  Before Keto, I was taking around 8 medications, I am now taking 2 and I see 2 physicians on a regular basis.  The best and biggest change is I am no longer diabetic.  My insulin resistance is almost nil.  By next year my A1C should be around 5.  Woohoo!

that is good to hear about your diabetes. If you don't mind me asking, were you type 1 or 2. I am type 1 and the diabetes specialist told me there is no cure.

Type 2, and no you have severe insulin resistance or no insulin production at all so Keto would not work for you, but talk to your doctor about it.  I truly believe everyone could benefit from no sugar and limited starches, but I am not a physician and make no claims about anyone else's body.  This works for me and works like a miracle.  And yes, I may eat a roll or two on this cruise and my calorie consumption may go up a bit, but in April when we returned from our last cruise, I had eaten this way with a few small cheats and I gained 4 pounds which were gone in 5 days back to stricter Keto.

Thank you for educating!  The science works and the benefits are well documented.

I've lost 32lbs since January and my doctor has taken me off all diabetic meds and proclaimed me non diabetic.  Don't know how many Mediterranean diet followers can make that claim, thank you very much.  I also know what I can and should not eat at Jamie's,  but just don't want to subject myself to the temptation that is pasta and bread there.  And I see you are really not familiar with true Keto regimen, it is not extreme at all. You should educate yourself before you criticize it.

And .....Chef Boyardee????? please...  Isch.  I love good pasta, fresh produce and olives and olive oil, all good Keto components.  I actually make my own Keto pasta from coconut flour...delish.  But you can't get that at Jamie's.

Coconut flour delish? Sorry those are not 3 words I would ever put together in a sentence. 😀

One of the worst dining venues on the ships.  I really don't understand how anyone likes this venue.  It's like eating fast food.  Sorry, not a fan at all.

I ordered one of my favorites....eggplant Parmesan. I've not ever had that meal made with the eggplant not breaded and fried. Jamie's eggplant is grilled with no breading. With the tomato sauce on top, the eggplant was a mushy mess and only a single layer. Eggplant Parmesan that I have always prepared and had in restaurants is layered. I was very disappointed in this dish. I guess the British don't know how to make a good eggplant Parmesan.

My analysis of the "Portofino comparison".

Portofino was "way" better because it existed many years ago, before the budget cuts.

If Portofino existed today, you all would be complaining the same way about the food there.

Just MO.  YMMV.

In general your comment rings true.  But for me personally I don't care about the fantasy of the good old days of cruising when there was unlimited budgets and I got to my cabin by a yellow brick road and the MDR was a 5 star experience.  Yeah right!  I much prefer modern and safe cruise ships with lots of choices, even if I don't like Jamie's I can go somewhere else!

A hero??? Really?  Just because you are on a diet, you  are a hero??
Perhaps you are doing well and you are a great success story with your weight loss and lifestyle.  That I can understand, but hero?

I did read your entire response and I do appreciate the education you provided. I will definitely do more research.

Well my doctor is apparently not well informed on the keto diet.   He told me it required complete elimination of carbs as in "ZERO" carbs a day.
I have done low carb dieting before, keeping carbs under 25 a day (hadn't gone as low as 20 a day yet).  So when I asked, I was told "No, a "true"  keto diet requires elimination of ALL carbs.  You are not allowed any carbs."
I will definitely do some more research and take proper data to my doctor for his review.

I AM NOT SAYING THOSE OF YOU ON KETO ARE WRONG.  I AM NOT DISPARAGING YOU. I am only telling you what I had been told by someone I believed was a well informed medical professional.   I still believe he's a good doctor, but he's not well versed on Keto apparently.

Yep, that's what HE said..."You're my hero, there's only a handful of people in my practice who've maintained this improvement in such a short period of time."  Those were his exact words...I didn't say I agreed with him.  Take it up with him...Dr. James Noland, Spring Branch WellMed.

RCI has had a Italian restaurant on their ships since the early 2000's- this isn't going to impact that what so ever.

I agree, but until Jamie's I thought they were horrible.  We rarely do specialty restaurants as I only eat chicken and zero seafood, but I actually really liked Jamie's.  If it goes away, no big deal, since like I said we never do specialty anyway.  We tried Jamie's 2 times and really did like it.

We've really enjoyed Jamie's on both cruises that had them.  For our upcoming Harmony cruise while the location is still branded Jamie's you can't make reservations for it.  From what we've heard from other cruisers it will go back to being Giovanni's but ironically not change any of the decor, just get rid of the JO signage...

We've never had Giovanni's as a specialty meal but we did take a cooking class there year's ago and absolutely loved it.  We made all our own lunch and devoured it.

There’s been no reports of any changes to Jamies on the ship.  The issues with Jamies in the UK won’t affect things on the ship and I doubt you will see any changes until the ships go to drydock.
