Happens all the time..  Even the roll calls from this site book space for meet and greets.  Complain to whoever you want to.  The spaces aren't booked for more than a couple hours at a time.  Not really much to complain about..

We have "closed" Skywalker's a couple of times for large Cruise Critic Meet and Greet functions. It was only for an hour or so and was in the morning when there is normally no bar service and very few folks would be there to read or whatever. Not a huge impact. Venues closed over and over for huge groups traveling together is another thing and it would peeve me greatly but there would be absolutely nothing I could do about it.

Not sure what type of function you're referring too.  If it's a cruise critic Meet & Greet, they usually take place on the first sailing day in the morning between 10:00 AM & 11:00 AM.  Best thing would be to sign up for it and join in the festivities. Great way to meet your fellow cruisers.

We just got off the Sky Princess yesterday,

There was a very large number of people who were with this Polka group.

Everyday they held private functions, most of the time in the Vista Lounge which was off limits to the rest of us.

In the evening when we had to get to the back elevators to go to the dining room on deck 6,

You couldn't move, there were so many people on line to get into the venue. They were there and weren't moving we had to wait.

Still had a good time.

Good time for a Rascal with a plow and upgraded motor/battery.

I was on the Dec. 4,2019 Inaugural Sky Princess cruise. Our roll call was extremely active. We had 86 pages, 2,144 replies and 37,807 views. Our unique problem was because we had a short Inaugural cruise there was no time for an M & G. However, many of us always congregate  on the Lido aft  area at the sail away. We were looking forward to meeting the people we had been conversing with for over a year. The sail away was the only opportunity to get together.

All was going well until we started  to gather and we were greeted by yellow barriers and an army of waiters all decked out and waiting for the guests which we weren't part of. The sign said "Private Party ".  At that point we had no place to go.

If my friend Cruise Critic host Carolyn reads this, so sorry  we couldn't meet up. The Naming Ceremony was awesome.

The whole thing was very classy and the Godmothers were well deserved with their massive accomplishments. We walked to the main dining roomful the Gala luncheon. The food was outstanding. Our Dec.7  Sky cruise was excellent. It starts with the great Captain Tuvo and staff.

I figure this could happen again but maybe not a private party but maybe rain.  So prior to the cruise there should be a  second meeting place planned.

Carolyn, if you read this I sure hope our paths will cross again. Some of us are hoping to be on the Enchanted  Feb. 20, 2021. Also plans for NYC  SKY repo Nov. 5 for 10 days to the Carib and end in FLL.

I'm fine with it if they close them during off hours, such as Skywalkers or the Vista Lounge for a meeting during the day. I'd be upset if they cut back on the activities that I enjoy to accommodate a group needing the space, such as having fewer performances in the theater so that a private group could have their own shows.

Oh yes! It happened in Skywalker's when we on the Crown. It sure was inconvenient for them

to use our private reading and sightseeing room!  😂

Can you just go to Skywalker’s during the day?

You can if it's not reserved for a private group. It is not unusual for Skywalker's to be reserved for a private group during the day. One of the groups that often reserves it on the first sea day is a Cruise Critic Meet & Greet. I'm sure everyone here will complain about that group reserving the space and not letting others use it. If we can reserve it for our Meet & Greet, then why can't other groups reserve it likewise?

We were on the Royal when there was a huge ballroom dance gathering.   The aft of the buffet is a fantastic area to sit and watch the ocean but every day (all day long) they had dance lesson out there and it was roped off and you could not get to the stern and walk across.    You had to use the area by the stairs and elevators to go from the port to starboard side.   Not only that but they were dancing in the atrium most of the time.   Many singles so it got to be kind of fun watching who was with who each day.  And watching the outfits the girls wore.  Some were so beautiful.

I had heard they were going to be on board and it didn't really bother me enough to change cruises.  We were with friends from the UK who are ballroom dancers and we loved it when they got out on the dance floor.  Many stopped dancing and just watched them.  They are so smooth and make it look so easy - I can watch them for hours.    Even the organizer told them they were fantastic.

In a way the music was much better than some of the functions they usually have in the atrium where the cruise director staff is screaming at the top of their lungs.

We've been on many cruises and attended many CC events.  The M & G usually lasts only an hour so I don't think it's a huge inconvenience to non-CC pax.  We've also been on cruises where there's been a large group, esp. in the Caribbean; they'll usually have a table in the atrium where their folks can get info, etc., but I don't recall their activities causing an inconvenience.  Now if it's on a 1,200 pax ship, that could be a different matter.

A few years ago when we did an Alaska cruise on Golden Princess our sailing happened to be hosting the World Bingo Championship, which meant the Vista Lounge was occupied by that group for large portions of the sea days on the cruise.  Fortunately the cruise staff seem to have planned well for this and were able to move a lot of things to the Explorers Lounge or the main theater, and the impact on the other passengers was minimal (having a few hundred people spend large portions of their sea days in the Vista Lounge probably also made things a fair bit less crowded elsewhere as well.)  Probably the biggest visible impact was the fact that the casino was jam-packed in the evenings.

Hi Sali,

It was such a shame that we all didn't get to have our informal meetings since the space was closed off to us without any warning. I'm sorry we didn't get to meet up throughout the sailing.  Glad you enjoyed everything! Hopefully we meet again on another sailing.

To the topic at hand, on one of our sailings the large group had the entire pool deck area closed off along with the pizza and grill area for about 3 hours during the dinner hours.  That was a bit annoying because we had planned on burgers and wine for dinner with friends.  It was the first time we had seen something that did close off dining venues to everyone else.
