Other than the fact that $1400 for a few hours of anything on their private island is ridiculous? I don't know.  Or that it is an only a $400 value?....and that is stretching it.

So I knew right away when we booked in October that the cabanas were out of our price range... However we still wanted to do the beach club itself.  On 2/14 we booked it for $79/pp for our May sailing, after previously booking at $93/pp and I've been watching for it to go down.  They are now selling it for $199 per person!

I had no idea prices on Coco were so arbitrary 😳 glad we got it when we did.

I just don't get it. I don't understand why people would be willing to pay that much with so many other (maybe not quite as nice) options available. I cringe when I'm asked to pay $20 for a chair at some beaches.

I mean, I get it. But this type of stuff doesn’t bother me in the slightest.  Never has, never will. I love Coco Cay and Labadee because I know that it will be a great beach day that costs me exactly ZERO dollars.  Beach days at some of my favorite islands run me $100 between the taxi, chair/umbrella rentals, food and drinks on the beach, etc., as the best beaches on non-private islands are almost never walkable from the ports.  
 

My wife and I always marvel at the incredibly wide range of spending we see out of others on every cruise we go on, but it does not change our spending habits whatsoever.  Some people will get the most expensive cabin at the most expensive price, buy for the most expensive dining and drink packages onboard (again, at the highest prices), opt for every up-sell when it comes to internet, the key, etc., book the most expensive excursions onboard, buy jewelry and art onboard, and pay for the most expensive excursions imaginable.  RCCL isn’t making its money off of me, which is fine. So it doesn’t bother me if some sucker wants to pay $200/hour to rent a shack.  The same person who is willing to pay $1,400 is the same person who first walks onto the island at 10:00am and is back on the boat by 2:30pm.  If you’ve got the money and this is how you want to spend it, go for it.  As for me, I’d use the $1,400 to pretty much pay the entire fare for my next cruise.

How is that a FAIL? RCI is a for profit business. If people are willing to pay that much, that is a smart business move in my book. I would never pay that much but it’s not my concern if other people are willing to pay that amount.

I think she was referring to the fact that the marketing is a fail because it literally shows a $400 value, but then proceeds to charge $1400 if you want to purchase - not a different screens, but BOTH right there where you can see it.  Either it is a $400 value and that is what you should pay, or it is a $1400 value and that is what you should pay, but BOTH should not be right there on the web page.  That is the fail - not the fact that they are charging $1400.

 

Personally, I wouldn't pay $400 for one.

The OP’s screenshot shows OVER $400 value...$1398.99 is clearly over $400. Probably not the best move marketing wise, but technically no contradiction.

If anyone was paying attention, they should have either placed the value at over $1,500 or the actual price at under $400. Obviously, they are in serious need of a proofreader. Maybe I could apply.

People all the time pay significantly more than the value of a product. A perfect example is tickets to a sporting event.  Web sites like Ticketmaster and Stubhub have warnings stating ticket prices may be higher than the face value of the ticket, yet people are willing to pay significantly more than the face value of the ticket. If people are willing to pay significantly more than the value RCI places on something, that is the price RCI will charge. And if people don’t pay the listed price, no doubt RCI will lower the price.

It seems Coco Cay prices, in some instances, are way over the top.  I have been to Coco Cay several times since the “upgrades”.  It is lovely.  IMHO it is totally unnecessary to spend tons of money there.  You can still have a wonderful day without spending a penny.  Kudos to Royal for really improving the experience there — whether you spend any money or not.  Katherine

I knew someone would point this out before I could. Probably just another glitch on Royal's website, which isn't at all surprising. We were perfectly content in a clam shell when we visited Coco Cay.

I didn't miss the point. And you say that like it should surprise someone. They are a for profit business and try to make as much money as possible. Of course they charge as much as possible. Ever been to Disney? $150 just to walk in to spend half the day standing in line. But millions of people still go. Value is subjective.

From a marketing standpoint, the idea is to throw out a stated value and then sell it for LESS money so that the person who makes the purchase thinks they are getting a good deal.   When these cabanas were originally listed for sale, I'm guessing the price was something like $300.  So, Royal put an "over $400 value" banner on the listing.   As the cabanas started selling, Royal switched to dynamic pricing so that the sales price is now well over $400, but neglected to remove the "over $400 value" banner.    That is the unintentional marketing "fail" that the OP pointed out and that some are having a little chuckle at.
