I think the only way to sail obviously is to require all to wear a mask. I am sure they will provide one with a hole in it to drink your drink😀

I for one would not cruise if I’m required to wear a mask.

Any thoughts on a few suggestions:

1. Revert to fixed dining to facilitate contact tracing.  Should be doable for dinner, with half the pax assigned to the lido with their same tablemates for breakfast and lunch, possibly with a come when ready  but to your table schedule for the first 2 meals.  Perhaps a small carryout section for in between meals.

2. Muster drill by deck at half hour intervals.

3. Seating in showroom by lottery for perhaps 1/3 capacity.  For those without reservations shows would be live streamed tv in cabins.

4. Masks required when in public spaces other than seated at tables.  Those not complying would be disembarked at next port.

Other thoughts?

Roy

Social distancing will be extremely difficult.  And some people won't wear masks - look at the demonstrators.  Some people want to cruise so badly they are willing to put themselves and others in harms way.

I would literally pass out if I had to wear a mask in the tropics.

I muse over the vaccine less pax lined up to use the elevators?? Sorry only 2 per ride or one scooter

Maybe you will be assigned a time to go up elevator 2 portside for dinner. Failure to make your time means going to bed hungry!!

Failure to keep six ft behind on the promenade deck means you have to do laps on your own balcony ...or not

Lining up in the Lido like when Seinfeld went to the soup Nazi will be the norm

I will wait for the vaccine before boarding a  floating petri dish

I agree.  I was at the hospital for a few hours with a mask on.  It’s hot as hades and hard on you.  I feel for our health care workers.

And no, I wasn’t there because of covid.

Same here, but not because I object to wearing a mask. To us, having to adapt to that reality on a cruise vacation would be a non-starter. I can't see that as a viable social or business model, not to mention it would be unenforceable. They can't even deal with the chair hogs!

We would likely forgo cruising until a vaccine is developed.

As much as we are passionate about cruising (40plus trips), I can’t see cruising again for quite some time.  We have cancelled our New England cruise in Sept. and a Transpacific in April.  Until a vaccine or an effective treatment is developed there is too great a danger to us (in our 70s).  I cant even begin to imagine how a cruise ship or for that matter an airline, can address social distancing.

I don't think the travel industry will recover from this for a very long time.😔

I also believe that the changes that will be needed to cruise will significantly change the cruise experience.  Here are just some, yet I still can't figure out how they would socially distance crew and we know that crew can spread the virus.

  • The number of passengers will have to be significantly reduced,
  • No more dropping your luggage off at ship side - you need to carry your luggage on board yourself meaning embarkation and screening will take a lot longer.  Same at the end of the cruise you have to take your luggage with you,
  • Set embarkation times to arrive at the ship so as to discourage those long line ups and large crowds waiting to board,
  • No elevator use permitted as it is almost impossible to physically distance in them and to sanitize after every use (I had read that many companies in China have shut down their elevators and they must use the stairs),
  • Many on board amenities would either be totally closed or significantly changed like pools, hot tubs, gyms, and walks on the promenade deck,
  • Don't know how they would deal with passengers and those long, skinny hallways.  They may need to assign crew on each end of each hallway to direct people,
  • No or very limited cabin cleaning during the cruise.  Many hotels are still operating and some others are releasing their plans when they open and you have to make your own bed and clean your own bathroom,
  • Set time for dining throughout the entire ship.  The buffet could be shut down permanently and the buffet dining tables reconfigured so it works like a restaurant,
  • Set times for passengers to disembark at ports.  Ports requiring tenders may be eliminated all together, and set times to return at ports to discourage large crowds from returning at the same time,
  • Temperature screening and other health screens at least every day and every time you leave and board the ship at ports,
  • Ports limiting the number and times of ships able to dock at a time to discourage over-crowding,
  • A lot less lounging chairs throughout the ship.  Expect a lot less lounging chairs at the pools,
  • Dining venues like the pizza and the Dive In will change to a sit down restaurant.  No more buzzers to wait for your order,
  • Self-service of any type essentially eliminated.  No grabbing water, coffee, or even a fork anymore,
  • Seating in all bars and nightclubs will have to be limited and spaced far apart,
  • Shops and casinos will have to limit the number of people who can enter at any one time,
  • Reservations for shows and entertainment venues to control groups,
  • All un-necessary items removed from cabin like paper, pens, flower vases, fruit baskets,
  • All activities onboard will be restricted by passenger numbers to discourage groups,
  • No more tours of the ship like galley or bridge tours,
  • Had washing stations installed everywhere on the ships

My guess  is:   Key West, Half Moon Cay,   San Juan,  St.  Thomas, for short cruise.

I think some combination of such ports is a realistic itinerary.  Rightfully so, but many of other of the Caribbean islands are likely eerie about welcoming tourists, I would think.

I still advocate Cruises to No Where would be a winner for the cruise lines.  I know some laws need to be changed.  So, get them changed!  Our lawmakers at all levels of government, particularly at the Federal and State level, are proficient in "kicking the can down the road" on any given issue.  It seems to me that this pandemic has caused "that road" to end.  Time for some difficult and maybe not particularly popular political decisions to be made in Washington as well as in all Capitols of the 50 States.

With all respect, scientists have been trying to develop a vaccine of HIV Aids   for 10 years? with no success, yet

I am   more hopeful for some of  the lab geniuses

discovering effective treatments, medicines to cure  this  savage virus

You don't get it by touching a fruit basket.

Your view is more realistic than some.  Surely, I am hopeful that an effective treatment or an effective vaccine can be developed.  But, it's going to take time.

Indeed,    ALOT  of ime.

I sincerely hope for treatments sooner than  a 'preventative vaccine'  being developed

Either would be such a Gift and surely worthy of a Nobel Prize, at the least.

My understanding is that the virus can survive on metal for up to 5 days and stainless steel for 2-3 days.  Aren't the fruit baskets on HAL made from metal?

Unfortunately things will be getting worse before they will get better.  We have no clue how many people have the virus.  The current optimistic model has the death toll rising from 1750 per day to 3000 per day by June.  Might want to put a couple of refrigerated trucks on the bow of the ship to hold the bodies at that rate and that is optimistic.  Until there is a viable vaccine cruising will be closed. That's 1 to 2 years away.

I believe that some people are under the impression that once cruises commence everything will be back to where it was.

i cannot image that it will be.  At least for a year, perhaps two.  Cruising will be different, the cruise lines that remain will be different.  Indeed the ports will be different.
