I agree with that. I have not seen much evidence of common sense on this planet going all the way back to Biblical times.😀
Rare NutsAboutGolf Posted May 26, 2020 #227 Share Posted May 26, 2020 With buffets, doing table service is a way to prevent crowding. While they'll need to hire more crew members to provide buffet table service compared to self serve, table service will solve the problem of needing the crew to enforce social distancing and prevent crowding at the buffet. Ports are demanding ships work with regulators to ensure rules are created and enforced. I was just at a casino which reopened this weekend, while there were social distance stickers on the floor in front the ATMs, it blocked a major walkway. Many people didn't have a problem walking in between two people standing six feet apart waiting in line. Like other cruise lines, the first and last day guest services can have well over 100+ people waiting in line and there simply might not be enough floor real estate to accommodate everyone during peak times. The only problem I have with table service, I just sense the whole process taking a lot of time. 10min wait in line to check in with a hostess, given a pager or perhaps they'll update the app to the allow restaurant notifications, 10min wait for a table, 10mins to see waitstaff, 10mins until your food is on the table. If that's the case, I'd rather go to the MDR.
Spif Barwunkel Posted May 26, 2020 #228 Share Posted May 26, 2020 The X buffet is here to stay. It will live to cruise another day. In a different format, thank goodness. Self-serve will give way to plated food. An easy transition that will lessen exposure to the hygienically challenged. It is a pasture, of sorts. A place where the herd gathers for impromptu grazing and unsystematic socializing, Unfortunately, beyond the mounds of food and greasy spoons, we find the occasional couth-free grazer. Pure, unadulterated, revolting gluttony. Etiquette is non-existent, as is consideration for others. No one and nothing else exists. These folks give buffets a bad reputation. They will never go away. Will mitigating the system and the conditions make a difference? To an extent, I'm sure they will. Of course, most of us never see what goes on behind the scenes in food preparation. Would we ever eat again beyond the confines of our humble abodes? I will continue to enjoy the buffet when it suits my purpose. When next we cruise, if you folks see any unsavory characters near me, please keep that to yourself. Unless, of course, it's you.

We can't control the chair hogs, spoon lickers at the buffet table on a cruise, is it any wonder with death count closing on 100K and many more uncounted we get this?

In the MDR I have had people at my table usually large tables pick up bread from basket then put it back and take another one. Same people who double dip in the butter dish which is meant for the table. I ask for my own dinner roll and individual butters that are wrapped in foil. That's why we always request a table for 2 and have met many nice people close by for " easy " chatting. I'm not including the " loud mouth " wearing his cowboy hat in Murano --- and the same " jerk " was in the Lawn Club Grill when we were there. As you mentioned earlier, you usually travel solo, I would invite you to sit at our table anytime .

An issue with most dining venues including the MDR, you had to hand your keycard to the hostess, they swipe and give it back. Surely that will be a thing of the past. The whole " package " goes well with his "Big Mouth " --- Mind you, the pretty lady with him was beautifully groomed, laughed at everything he " blabbed ", and is probably 25 yrs younger. Hey, I gotta be careful not to offend anyone or I'll get the " boot " from CC.

That is very kind of you to offer. I usually request a table of 8 - 10 people so there is always someone to talk with. One of the couples I had a pre cruise dinner with on my last sailing changed their dining table to sit with me and as it turned out there were 4 solo ladies 2 of which had birthdays. Lots of fun going to shows, martini bars and late night dance parties.

For the X fleet, at least the Edge and Apex use proximity cards (RFID chipped cards) where you wave them over a reader. Even on CCLs newest ships they used proximity cards as well so this was seemingly inevitable cruise line wide. I've only been on the Sol which certainly did not have them in June 2019. While I'd prefer a solution for the readers to scan my card or smartphone without the need to remove it from my pocket, proximity cards are a welcome change. "Proximity cards" on Princess ships have been an abject failure. They can be "spoofed" into adding items on your cruise bill. Princess uses them for tracking the whereabouts of passengers. They enable the bar tender to call you by name - not something I want or need. The "medallion" batteries run out quickly on some devices requiring the device to be replaced. They unlock your cabin door - if close enough and that may be their only advantage to the passenger. The rest of the advantages all go to the cruise line enabling them to build a database on your movements, shopping, drinking habits, etc., so they can inundate you with advertisements and "deals."
