It was the third time we'd stopped in Naples in November 2014., and our first Prinsendam cruise. Actually it was a B2B, the first cruise being the Black Sea and the second the Holy Land. We had switched to Holland America after our previously booked Ocean Princess cruise was cancelled by us. We and our friends wanted to see Yalta and Sevastapol, Ukraine but Princess cancelled those ports in early 2014 and replaced them with Greek ports. Holland America cancelled Ukraine too but they added ports in the Black Sea. So we switched to a new to us cruise line and are glad we did. Holland America always has more varied ports than Princess. When the Prinsendam arrived in Naples, there was the Ocean Princess already docked there. We would have been on that ship if we hadn't all jumped ship! I had set up a private tour of the Amalfi coast so we set out with our driver and had a wonderful day there. Our driver actually took our picture for us and did a fine job. I'm either standing in a hole or DH is standing on a rock - he is only 1 inch taller than me!😄 Nice photo of you both. You picked a great spot to get your photo took too. 13

dfish Posted February 23, 2022 #62 Share Posted February 23, 2022 3 hours ago, ger_77 said: I like today's menu suggestion and know we haven't had meatloaf for a long time. I know I've got ground beef in the freezer that I can thaw to make one. I make mine with a couple of handfuls of oatmeal, some milk, onions and grated carrots. Then I mix a sauce to put on top that consists of ketchup, dry mustard and nutmeg. Yum, I can almost smell it cooking already. I know DH is going to love it, because after the first meal, he actually slices it and makes sandwiches from it. So it's looking like we'll be having meatloaf, garlic mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus for dinner tonight. And wine. My mom's recipe is the one I use and she used 2/3 ground beef and 1/3 ground pork. The ground pork added a touch of sweetness to it without using sugar. She used to put a very small amount in her spaghetti sauce as well. It took out some of the bitterness. She also used some Lipton Onion soup, bread crumbs, and an egg. She would also add tomato paste to the meat mixture. Mmmmm. I considered asking people for their meatloaf recipes. Everyone has their favorite. Remember when Ann Landers had the meatloaf debate? 4 hours ago, Cruzin Terri said: @dfishthank you for rejoicing with me for being pain-free. It has been wonderful. Tomorrow makes a week. I had almost forgotten how good it could feel. Also thank you for the yummy recipes every day. That’s a lot of work. I know how wonderful it is to be relieved from pain. I had a skull crusher of a headache that lasted for almost 3 months. I was ok if I was flat on my back, but if I stood or sat for more than a few minutes, it would come on. It took a course of prednisone to finally break that pain cycle. I was so thankful to get my life back. I had been doing nothing except laying on the couch watching TV. @lindaler Happy Birthday! @Mr. Boston's DH: Happy Birthday to you! 27

Horizon chaser 1957 Posted February 23, 2022 #64 Share Posted February 23, 2022 Good morning, all! It has been a while since our cupboard, but maybe someday again when we are done travelling. Meanwhile, I will take Gerry’s lead and celebrate pink shirt day. DS and I are going out with a friend for a girls lunch, so I can wear the new pink shirt I bought yesterday. We had rain in the desert last night. There was a winter storm warning for the passes, and the mountains around us are all white this morning. It’s very beautiful. DH and I were out for lunch yesterday and took a patio table since it was full inside. It was very windy, and clouds of sand kept whipping through. Our black cloth napkins were glistening with sand in no time. I hate to think of how much sand was seasoning what we ate! Happy Wednesday, everyone! There are rarely sandstorms aboard a BHB!

Rare ottahand7 Posted February 23, 2022 #66 Share Posted February 23, 2022 Thanks for the daily. We are in Fort Lauderdale. About 200 remain on for the 11 day leg. Total probably 900 again. No dogs, no tennis no curling. The Martin quote is the same gist as the Twain quote last week. Never have been to Naples. A trifecta today - drink, meatloaf and wine are big winners for me. We are next to the massive Wonder of the Seas. Dinners have been terrific. Prayers for all on Roy's care list and stay warm. 🙏🙏🙏
Quartzsite Cruiser Posted February 23, 2022 #67 Share Posted February 23, 2022 Good morning from cloudy, windy and very chilly Quartzsite. We got about 8/100s of an inch of rain overnight, and are supposed to get more this afternoon. The rain amount was not a typo. We get so little rain here and not much at a time in the winter, that DH got me a rain gage that measures in 1/100s of an inch, and the tall tube will hold one inch. Anyway, we'll take any and all we can get. We have not had any dog biscuits or other treats since Nikki crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Both dogs liked going with us to the drive-up window at the bank. They always had dog biscuits to hand out. My father loved playing tennis, but gave up trying to teach me once he realized it was a lost cause. Several winter Olympics ago we started watching curling and realized there was a lot of strategy involved. I like the multi-quote of the day, and as a reader I agree. Meatloaf will be on the menu tomorrow. For several years, I used a recipe for Italian meatloaf, but I found I was making it less often. That is when I went back to my mother's recipe, which is a very simple one. All I put in the meatloaf is ground beef, eggs, milk, cracker crumbs, chopped onions and sage. We can usually get two to three meals out of one and I can have one or two meatloaf sandwiches too. Tonight while it will be in the lower 50sF, we'll be having homemade pizza. We'll pass on the drink, but the wine sounds good. We've been to Naples many times, and all but once on a BHB. I'll go through my pictures in a little while and see what I can find. We have been to Pompeii, Sorrento, Salerno, Capri, and toured Naples. In 2019, we walked to the Museo Cappella Sansevero to see the Veiled Christ. It was carved out of a single piece of marble in such a way that Christ's face can be seen, but it also appears to have a thin veil over the face. There are other statues in the museum that are also veiled. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to take pictures inside. @Mr. Boston HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOUR DH. Have a safe flight and Bon Voyage. @ger_77 Gerry, thank you for the information about Pink Shirt Day. Bullying has always been around, but it seems to have gotten worse. @mamaofami Carol, I agree the weather has gotten crazy. It will be 53F here today and by the first of next week, it will be 86F. @smitty34877 Terry, glad you got your haircut. It does make a difference in morale. Glad Tana is able to participate in selecting the recipes. Hope that helps her feel more useful and less of a burden. @kazu Jacqui, whether or not you are on the Care List or the Rotation, we are all thinking about you, Jose, and Marley. You are a big part of this family. @marshhawk I don't understand people who get pets and then ignore or mistreat them. I'm glad you called the cops about that poor dog. @StLouisCruisers Sandi, when I had my HOHS surgery 30+ years ago, the dermatologist told me to use Vaseline on the incision. Between that, and the fact he kindly made the cut in a wrinkle, you can't see the scar. @lindaler 🥂 🎂 HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 🍾 @Horizon chaser 1957 Doesn't the desert smell wonderful after it rains? But those winds and the dust the last two days -- YIKES! 😱 I'll look through my pictures in a little while. Lenda 28
Cruising-along Posted February 23, 2022 #68 Share Posted February 23, 2022 Good morning all! It's a bright, sunny day and cold, low 20's every night. I'll be glad when it warms up again. At least we haven't gotten snow. And here we thought winter was over 😉 Will pass on all the days (no dogs so no dog biscuits, I'm terrible at tennis, and know nothing about curling) 🙂 The meal sounds really good, and I printed off the first recipe to use some ground pork I had in the freezer. Thanks for the recipes, @dfishDebbie! The drink sounds good too, but will pass on the red wine. @lindalerHappy Birthday!! @marshhawkbless you for helping that poor dog. I just don't understand people like that. We have been to Naples many times, but never spent any time in the city. Instead we went to Pompeii twice, Herculaneum once, spent a few days on the Amalfi Coast, and climbed the last mile up to the top of Vesuvius. Once we went to a buffalo cheese farm. 😂 We're all happy today, as today is the day DS and DDIL are closing on the house they bought here after moving from CA. They don't plan on moving in any time soon, because they plan to start major renovations to the whole house. That will take a few years to finish, but they hope to start some of it before moving in. Here are some photos from some of our visits to Naples, Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius. bennybear Posted February 23, 2022 #69 Share Posted February 23, 2022 (edited) Good morning and thanks all! A shout out to Roy for the sunrise photos, and care list. I like the streamlined version. @lindaler happy birthday! @ger_77 I too will celebrate pink shirt day! @StLouisCruisers hope you heal well! Naples is a port we’ve visited so often I have lost track, so much to see and do. We have also stayed in Sorrento area for several days. Don’t be put off by the garbage photos, as that was likely during a strike and we have never encountered that. If you’ve been many times may I suggest a visit to the palace in Caserta, an easy half an hour train ride to where they filmed the empire strikes back, or to Villa Oplontis which was Nero’s wife’s villa, a UNESCO site, only a stop or so before Pompeii, uncrowded and spectacular with amazing frescoes. And then there’s Ischia a lovely island. This port never fails to delight! And the pizza, We too have been to Trianon, and then the winner of the best pizza last photo, and last trip a more local delicious place first photo across from amazing pastries, Sfogetella, and gelato! And the Uber modern metro! Capri also never disappoints. Edited February 23, 2022 by bennybear 26
durangoscots Posted February 23, 2022 #70 Share Posted February 23, 2022 Good morning to all. Well, our weather is trying to confuse us all and doing a very good job of it. We were supposed to get this storm in 2 parts and maybe still are..... but the timing of everything is all over the place. We got about 6 inches originally and then on and off rain/snow. The second part of the storm was supposed to move in last night but did not, but right now we are having light snow so it may be on the way. Higher elevations are getting blasted and the passes north and east of us are closed. Ski areas are super pleased. I think it has just stayed warmer at the lower elevations but the moisture is here and we can certainly use it no matter how it arrives. I don't have to go anywhere so it really does not matter. Would love to see Naples and surrounding area. Bandit approves of doggie treats in any form. I am a great fan of meatloaf and vary the way I make it. Deb, I see some good ideas. Need to thaw the meat so tonight will be some left overs and tomorrow I will tackle the loaf. Positive thoughts to all.... think Spring, good health, and cruises. Sharon in AZ Posted February 23, 2022 #73 Share Posted February 23, 2022 Good morning everyone and Happy Wednesday! I started reading the Daily very early because I couldn’t get back to sleep but finally got up to turn on the heater. Last night’s dinner with our old friends was lots of fun. We figured that it was probably 30 years since we had seen them. Blue doesn’t eat biscuits, they are too big usually, but does get plenty of treats. His favorite are salmon skin chips and chicken strips that I buy at TJ’s. Now he goes crazy whenever I make salmon so I usually save the skin for him and bake it until it’s really crispy. Curling is cool and I enjoy watching it but didn’t watch a bit of the Olympics. I tried to play tennis in high school but was horrible. But I’m sure @Overhead Fred will celebrate it today. The meat loaf sounds good but we are having ribeye steak again. I’ll pass on the drink and wine. We went to Naples on our Med cruise 2001 on the Rotterdam. The pictures are on disks and in a box but I do have one in a frame that I’ll try to take a picture of, I’ll post it if I can get a good one. @Mr. Boston Happy Birthday to your DH and Bon Voyage! 🎉🎈🧁⛴ Linda @lindaler — Happy Birthday!! 🎂🎂🎊❤️ Don’t freeze today. 🥶 Have a great day everyone! 21

Quartzsite Cruiser Posted February 23, 2022 #75 Share Posted February 23, 2022 Hopefully, these are some different pictures of Naples. In 2019, on the Veendam, we were in Naples three times, and the fourth we had to dock in Salerno. The second time we were in Naples, we took the Ho-Ho as we'd never really spent time in Naples. That year, the streets were crowded but not littered with trash. I think in the past 20 years or so, Italy has cleaned up its act so to speak. These pictures are of the area in the next little bay to the left of the Castel Nuovo as you're looking at it from the dock. It is more of a residential area and not as crowded with people, but the buildings are densely packed together.. Lenda 25
