The Fleet Report and Daily for Thursday April 18th, 2024

Recommended Posts

Happy Birthday Martha!!  I pray it's a wonderful day for you and Jim and that your wishes come true!!!

And Happy Birthday to others who are celebrating, too!!!

Thank you for the reports and recipes and days and information!!

Animal Crackers... Spinach & Artichoke Dip...  Somehow these two blurred together in my reading...  And a weird look appeared on my face!!!  I wonder???  NO, I don't!!!  I will not dip animal crackers in my Spinach & Artichoke...

But the recipes straightened all that out when I realized they were sandwhiches and NOT DIP!!  And Graham told us that Animal Crackers come from England -- Were they Animal Biscuits there???

I have always enjoyed Animal Crackers and Shirley Temple!!!  But I've never had them in my soup!!!

What an interesting angle of the Opera House!!  It puts it all in a different perspective than most tourist photos!!  THANK YOU!!!

OH MY...  The Taj Mahal and the caves and everything you got to see...  I remember climbing stairs and climbing more and more stairs in visits to temples around India and Nepal!!  And the Monkeys Eyes painted on the shikhara of many temples...

Have a wonderful day!!

Interesting collection of days; pass on the meal & drink; would try the wine; not been to the port and would love to go, but airfare is cost prohibitive. Very much look forward to the pictures; thank you @StLouisCruisers for the ones you've posted.

Thank you @aliaschief for the beautiful pictures.

Dr that ordered yesterday's MRIs is out of town for 2 weeks, so the reports will be waiting for her when she returns. She told me if the show anything to ask my shoulder surgeon for a referral.

Prayers 🙏 @kazu you get the news you want today at Dr appt and for @JazzyV procedure goes well for your BFF.

Today is work all day. I'll finish a User Guide I've been working on and sit in on a webinar. Thank goodness I'm not hosting as my head is still pounding.

Currently 70° headed to rainy 88°. Looks like there's a wet cold front moving in this weekend.

Prayers 🙏 and positive thoughts for all.

Good Thursday Morning Dailyites!  Being a bit north of Sandi, we are at 60 and Sunny!  I seem to have misplaced a cat.  Tigger wanted breakfast a few minutes too early, and when I did go open the cans, and he usually flies onto the counter...there was no Tigger. I have wandered the house, and no Tigger.  There was a mosquito in the water bowl, but no Tigger.  This is weird.

th?id=OIP.2mIZntGus18u3pwC4U0qMwHaDw&pid=Api&P=0&h=220

I went to feed Munchkin and the oudoorians, and I was met by Collard, and I gave him food, and I put Munchkins special food on the porch, and then I heard bad coughing, Butter, Munchkin's bestie is rather ill I am afraid, and I don't want him near her or the kittens.  So the plastic wrap will go up around the porch again.  I was going to do that anyway, as the temps will drop to 50 by Sunday.  DH really wanted to get Munchkin to the vets to have the kittens aborted, but now that they are born, he is a most attentive Grandpa Cat.  When I told him I had a name for one of them, he asked, which two are you keeping?  I have to think about this, I guess the two that are not adopted. I do want to keep the fuzzy gray first born, but I also think Kittens should be taken in twos.  We don't have to worry about it for 12 more weeks anyway.

I heard from my CTG "big boss"  I start training on this year's campaign next Thursday, but start work two weeks later, I start training on the Opera on Monday the 22nd, and start working on the 22nd. With the big cruise next year, and a week with friends on the upper Gulf coast this October, lets face it, I need to work.

DH is not very good at noticing when he is getting low on his pain meds, and he ran out, called his doc to get the prescription refilled, and the pharmacy doesn't have them. Since Jessie takes the same meds, he called him to get two pills, one for last night, and one for this morning, and hopefully the pharmacy will have the drups today.  If they cant get the drugs, he needs to call the doc to get back on the old meds, since they have them in stock at the pharmacy.  Anyway, I drove him over to Jessie and Penny's and it turns out I don't have to worry about baby sitting their dog and cats, her son and his partner will do it.  Yay!  Too much on my plate right now.

Good Thursday morning! Thanks for stepping up for the Daily Sandi.   A good group of days, I used to really enjoy animal crackers when I was a child, they never were so special again when they came in the large box instead of the little circus wagon box.   We are grateful for linemen.  We had so many high winds the last week I am grateful we didn't lose power.   A plain weird quote.  Thanks for the photos of Sydney Sandi.   I am sure there will be many more coming from this popular port.   I will pass on the sandwich and the boozy cocktail, maybe one before a long nap..  The Aussie wine from D'Arenburg sounds like another winner.   Thanks for researching these for us each day,

Vanessa, I hope your BFF MOHs surgery goes smoothly and all done in one pass.    @kazu Jacqui I hope that you are getting some relief from your foot pain and can carry on with your cruise.   @Haljo1935 glad your MRIs are completed, does your hospital offer a patient portal?  I get all of my results including x-rays, dexa scans and MRIs as soon as they are passed on to the doctor.   Prayers for Tana and Annie and everyone else in our group who is hurting or suffering.  Prayers for all in war zones, Ukraine, Israel and the innocents in Gaza.

Today is a busy day as I am doing the Zoom class for the Landscape School in Lansing.  I am glad they allowed me to Zoom in instead of presenting in person.  Then off to garden club for the Arbor Day tree project.    It will be nice to have this talk off my desk as it is rather stressful to perform well.  Have a lovely day!  Nancy

Good Thursday morning everyone.  Thanks to Sandi @StLouisCruisers for taking over the Fleet Report & thanks as always to Rich, Roy, Vanessa, Debbie, Dixie & Ann.

Many thanks to all of you who expressed care and concern yesterday.  I really appreciate it.  To answer a couple of people, I didn’t really injure my foot.  It was a reaction to a too ambitious pedicure.  Sadly the advice that the podiatrist gave me missed the mark and aggravated things so it went from bad to worse.  thankfully I found the foot nurse specialist who quickly changed things around.

She actually came to the house (she offered) last night to check the foot and was pleased with the progress.  Doctor wants me to continue my protocols but I am good to go!  Foot will stay painful for a few days until everything is healed so I requested wheel chair service to not overwork it when we get to Pearson - it’s a long walk to U.S. Immigration.  Doctor was very pleased I am not pushing it.

Doctor is concerned with the blood flow in my foot but since it’s been that way for some time she thinks it is ok - especially since I am in North America and can get home if needed.  I have an appointment for a referral to the vascular surgeon when I return.

So, I best get moving and packing and prep the house.  Everything else is done - Ivan has his shots (he was a very good boy yesterday) and annual and the SUV is in the garage.

Many, many thanks to you all. 💜

Good morning all.

I am writing fast because I have had internet problems for the last two days.

I have no idea if they are resolved or not.  I just know that I have been unable to use the internet for last few days for any length of time.

Today is DH’s birthday and we will celebrate it at home. While our original plans were to go out to dinner, we have a big golf tournament going on here and I am sure reservations are hard to come by and service is not the best.

All is well and I will post when Hargray permits me to do so.

God Bless,

Terri

Happy birthday to your husband Terri.

Good morning everyone.  Thanks for the daily updates.  Three nice days to celebrate,  linemen are crucial after a storm for sure.  The quote is funny, nice to have a little humor on this dreary day.  The meal and drink suggestions sound pretty tasty.  I haven’t been to today’s port but I am enjoying the photos.  Prayers for those on our prayer list and those that need them.  Cheers to everyone celebrating happy events and happy birthday to @sailingdutchy’s DW Martha!🥂🍾🎉

I'm happy to hear you have the okay to go on your cruise.

Hopefully your foot doesn't cause you any more problems and you have a wonderful cruise on Volendam.

Good morning from another gray and cloudy day in central Texas.  It is currently 70F with 98% humidity and a dew point of 69F.  Our predicted high is 87F, with rain predicted from 4 pm to midnight.  There is a possible risk of severe weather but no warnings right now.  The rain will return tomorrow night and is supposed to last through Sunday night.  There will be a couple of errands when I go into town to get my finger x-rayed, then I'll try to tackle some of the stuff still stored in the port from the old motorhome.

We've seen a lot of monuments and sites in our travels.  Always loved animal crackers, but didn't have them often growing up.  The best day to celebrate id National Lineman Appreciation Day.  They are the backbone of the electric power companies and the unsung heroes when the weather knocks out power.  Often linemen from other states will travel to disaster areas to help restore power.

An amusing quote that leaves some questions.

The meal looks interesting, but I think we'll stick to our regular grilled cheese sandwiches.  I'd heard of Long Island Iced Tea, but not Long Beach Iced Tea, but in all honesty, I'll pass on both.  @0106  Tina, thanks for the clarification between the two.  Thirty plus years ago, we used to drink Grenache wine, so we might try today's wine.

We have visited Sydney twice on cruises.

Today is an important day in the history of St. Peter's Basilica.

@StLouisCruisers  Sandi, thank you for filling in for Jacqui @kazu as she heads out for her much deserved cruise.  Please wish your niece Lisa A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY for us.

@kazu  Jacqui, I'm glad you will be going on your cruise, and I hope the foot is much better soon.  Safe travels tomorrow.

@MISTER 67  Congratulations on shooting one below your age.  Sorry the team lost.

@aliaschief  Bruce, thanks for the Mumbai pictures.  We saw some of the sights and a lot of the slums on the bus ride from the airport to the port after our Agra excursion.  That was enough for me.

@Cruzin Terri  Terri, I hope your internet is restore soon.  Please wish Jim A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY for us.

@Sea Viewer  Welcome to the Daily.

@Haljo1935  Elizabeth, I'm sorry your doctor is out of town for two weeks after the MRIs.

@marshhawk  Annie, I'm glad you have two campaigns to work now.  I hope Tigger appears soon.  I hope your DH can get his prescription today, or another pain killer.

@ottahand7  Nancy, good luck with the zoon presentation.

@sailingdutchy  Tony, please wish Martha A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY for us.

@Mr. Boston  I hope everything goes smoothly with the movers today.

We have been to Sydney twice.   The first time was in 2000 on P&O's Oriana world cruise.  In 2002, we were on the 64-day APEC cruise on Volendam, and spent 1 1/2 days in Sydney.

In 2000, when we were a lot younger, we had a busy day beginning with the sail in.    We took the Ho-Ho and then walked around downtown Sydney.

When we got back to Circular Quay, we decided to take the ferry to Manly across the bay.

In 2002, Volendam sailed into the bay about noon.  This was Volendam's maiden call in Sydney, and we were greeted by a fire boat who lead us to Circular Quay.

When we left the ship, two wildlife experts greeted us, one with a Koala and one with a Sugar Baby, who had the softest fur.  Sorry it's a little blurry.

That afternoon, we took the Ho-Ho and visited a couple of museums, including an old electric power plant, but I don't have pictures.

The next day, we rented a car and drove to the Blue Mountains, and on the way back, around some of the far reaches of Sydney.

We saw this unusual bug that seems to have a face on his back.  It looks like some type of moth.  I had to really zoom in so the "face" would show up.

Good morning, thanks for the Fleet Report and Daily!  Through our various travels we've seen many monuments and sites, I love the taste of animal crackers, and we do appreciate linemen who have dangerous jobs that the rest of us wouldn't want to tackle.

Aaannnddd it's still snowing.  Argh.  I thought when I went to bed last night that it would stop, but today there's a strong wind blowing with it as well, and listening to the radio, it appears highways around the city are in terrible condition.  The only saving graces are that it isn't frigidly cold, only -6C (21), and that the snow is thick, wet and heavy which means it will provide much needed moisture for the farmers and forests.  Yesterday afternoon the doorbell rang and our sweet young man was there with his shovel, letting us know he was going to do the driveway, sidewalks and patio.  What a gem.

Happy Birthday @sailingdutchy's DW Martha,  @Cruzin Terri's DH Jim and @StLouisCruisers niece Lisa; I wish you all many happy returns of the day.

@kazuI'm delighted to hear your physician gave you the go-ahead for your cruise, and that your foot issue caused by a pedicure is able to be healed.

We were lazy yesterday, didn't do a whole lot with the weather other than laundry.  I found a half loaf of bread in the freezer so that meant we didn't have to even go out for groceries, but we definitely need to do that today or Sochi will be looking to gnaw on one of our fingers for sustenance.  Other than that there's not much planned for us, just hanging around and living life.

I'd like to try the drink of the day - one would suffice I'm sure!  Pretty sure I'd enjoy the wine, and wow on the menu suggestion.  I'd probably cheat a big and buy a tub of spinach/artichoke dip and use that instead of making it from scratch.  Tonight I'm making something I haven't done in a while - DH has asked for lemon garlic shrimp pasta which we'll have with a side salad at our kitchen table.  And wine.

Prayers for everyone who is in need, in pain, in grief, and in turmoil.  Cheers to all with celebrations happening.

Smooth Sailing!  ☺️☺️☺️

LET US NOT FORGET!

Paul Revere’s Ride

By Henry Wadsworth LongfellowLongfellowstamppoemsection-300x177.jpg

LISTEN, my children, and you shall hear
Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,
On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-five;
Hardly a man is now alive
Who remembers that famous day and year.

He said to his friend, “If the British march
By land or sea from the town to-night,
Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch
Of the North Church tower as a signal light, —
One, if by land, and two, if by sea;
And I on the opposite shore will be,
Ready to ride and spread the alarm
Through every Middlesex village and farm,
For the country folk to be up and to arm.”

Then he said, “Good night!” and with muffled oarCover of piano music with a colorful, cartoon image of a man on horseback with other men observing
Silently rowed to the Charlestown shore,
Just as the moon rose over the bay,
Where swinging wide at her moorings lay
The Somerset, British man-of-war;
A phantom ship, with each mast and spar
Across the moon like a prison bar,
And a huge black hulk, that was magnified
By its own reflection in the tide.

Meanwhile, his friend, through alley and street,
Wanders and watches with eager ears,
Till in the silence around him he hears
The muster of men at the barrack door,
The sound of arms, and the tramp of feet,
And the measured tread of the grenadiers,
Marching down to their boats on the shore.

Then he climbed the tower of the Old North Church,
By the wooden stairs, with stealthy tread,
To the belfry-chamber overhead,
And startled the pigeons from their perch
On the sombre rafters, that round him made
Masses and moving shapes of shade, —
By the trembling ladder, steep and tall,
To the highest window in the wall,
Where he paused to listen and look down
A moment on the roofs of the town,
And the moonlight flowing over all.

Beneath, in the churchyard, lay the dead, image.jpeg
In their night-encampment on the hill,
Wrapped in silence so deep and still
That he could hear, like a sentinel’s tread,
The watchful night-wind, as it went
Creeping along from tent to tent,
And seeming to whisper, “All is well!”
A moment only he feels the spell
Of the place and the hour, and the secret dread
Of the lonely belfry and the dead;
For suddenly all his thoughts are bent
On a shadowy something far away,
Where the river widens to meet the bay, —
A line of black that bends and floats
On the rising tide, like a bridge of boats.

Meanwhile, impatient to mount and ride,
Booted and spurred, with a heavy stride
On the opposite shore walked Paul Revere.
Now he patted his horse’s side,
Now gazed at the landscape far and near,
Then, impetuous, stamped the earth,
And turned and tightened his saddle-girth;
But mostly he watched with eager search
The belfry-tower of the Old North Church,
As it rose above the graves on the hill,
Lonely and spectral and sombre and still.
And lo! as he looks, on the belfry’s height
A glimmer, and then a gleam of light!
He springs to the saddle, the bridle he turns,
But lingers and gazes, till full on his sight
A second lamp in the belfry burns!

A hurry of hoofs in a village street,
A shape in the moonlight, a bulk in the dark,
And beneath, from the pebbles, in passing, a spark
Struck out by a steed flying fearless and fleet:
That was all! And yet, through the gloom and the light,
The fate of a nation was riding that night;
And the spark struck out by that steed, in his flight,
Kindled the land into flame with its heat.

He has left the village and mounted the steep,ride-own-words-300x120.jpg
And beneath him, tranquil and broad and deep,
Is the Mystic, meeting the ocean tides;
And under the alders that skirt its edge,
Now soft on the sand, now loud on the ledge,
Is heard the tramp of his steed as he rides.

It was twelve by the village clock,
When he crossed the bridge into Medford town.
He heard the crowing of the *****,
And the barking of the farmer’s dog,
And felt the damp of the river fog,
That rises after the sun goes down.

It was one by the village clock,
When he galloped into Lexington.
He saw the gilded weathercock
Swim in the moonlight as he passed,
And the meeting-house windows, blank and bare,
Gaze at him with a spectral glare,
As if they already stood aghast
At the bloody work they would look upon.

It was two by the village clock,
When he came to the bridge in Concord town.
He heard the bleating of the flock,
And the twitter of birds among the trees,
And felt the breath of the morning breeze
Blowing over the meadows brown.
And one was safe and asleep in his bed
Who at the bridge would be first to fall,
Who that day would be lying dead,
Pierced by a British musket-ball.

You know the rest. In the books you have read,
How the British Regulars fired and fled, —
How the farmers gave them ball for ball,
From behind each fence and farm-yard wall,
Chasing the red-coats down the lane,
Then crossing the fields to emerge again
Under the trees at the turn of the road,
And only pausing to fire and load.

So through the night rode Paul Revere;
And so through the night went his cry of alarm
To every Middlesex village and farm, —
A cry of defiance and not of fear,
A voice in the darkness, a knock at the door,
And a word that shall echo forevermore!
For, borne on the night-wind of the Past,
Through all our history, to the last,
In the hour of darkness and peril and need,
The people will waken and listen to hear
The hurrying hoof-beats of that steed,
And the midnight message of Paul Revere.

Good morning. It is 43 going to 48 and raining. The heat is on again after several days of not needing it. I have soup on the stove and chicken in the oven for later today. I would like the recipe today but the rest of the group would vote no. They are funny about artichokes.I love artichokes so should make some just for me!

@Cruzin Terri, Happy Birthday to Jim!

@sailingdutchy, Tony, Happy Birthday to Martha!

and @StLouisCruisers, Sandi, Happy Birthday to Lisa,

I was so happy to read that @kazu, Jacqui, is free to travel but sorry it came from a pedicure.

Tana and I decided to take it easy today as yesterday ended up being quite a long day. I plan to ignore laundry and grocery needs and will try to rest this afternoon.

Have a great day everyone.

The sunrise as we sailed in and the pilot boat.

When we got back to Circular Quay, we decided to take the ferry to Manly across the bay.

I couldn't resist the sunset pictures on two iconic symbols of Sydney.

Ms Crystal. Looks like you did the same tour we did. Liked that steepest railroad track! When we arrived in Sydney, the Iraq War had just started and someone painted in red paint, Peace, not War on the roof of the Opera House!

Thank you Rich, Sandii, Vanessa, Debbie, Ann, and Dixie Prayers for Jacqui.  Happy Birthday  Lisa, Martha, and Jim.  Three great days to celebrate although I haven’t had animal crackers in decades and my utilities are all underground so I hope the day includes those who maintain that infrastructure.

The quote seems just weird.

I have been to Sydney 4 times, 2003 on a land trip and 2010, 2018, and 2020 on Crystal.

This sounds like a great day in religion, especially Roman Catholics.

I’ll pass on the meal.  My alternative is Chilled Peach and Ginger Soup, Rustic Lasagna, and Peach Crisp as served on MS Zaandam April 18, 2017.

I’ve finished my walk.  Yesterday the dentist found a tooth she decided needed to go, so at lunch time I will head up to the pharmacy to pick up a prescription for the procedure.  Then this evening I’ll have AV practice for Sunday’s service.

Thanks for the Fleet Update and General Info from all contributors!

Lineman Day! I was a lineman for the county and I drove the main road. They called me the Redneck lineman and I’m still on the road.

Animal crackers. Liked them. I was never an Alabama cracker but we do have Graham cracker on this thread every day!  😀

Good morning. @kazuGreat news that you will be able to join the Volendam. That is not a terribly ambitious cruise, so you should be able to enjoy yourself once on board.

My day .... I have an appointment with the dermatologist in the early afternoon and I suspect I have a couple spots to be removed. I have managed to finish the unpacking from the cruise.... now I just have to put everything away and do some laundry. Our thrift store restricts the number of items you can drop off so I will be doing multiple trips over the next few weeks. I feel like I am making progress. Then, I need to start on serious downsizing.

The meal of the day looks interesting. I am a bit of a fussy eater, but I think I would try it. I would have to skip the drink. I have been to Sydney multiple times including on this past cruise. I enjoy it but I have to admit that cities are really not my thing and after a couple of days I am ready to move on. I have attended the opera and visited the Blue Mountains and walked and walked. Did not do the bridge climb.... I don't like heights.

Take care all. We all need to stay on our feet.

Susan
