eastender Posted April 17, 2018 #1 Share Posted April 17, 2018 OK, I'm obviously not talking about cruise critic members because we all tip $1 min.per drink right? It's all those others and it's a lot of people, where nothings happening, some are hard pushed to say thank you. That's what my wife says and believe me, she's always right. These are cruises out of Florida.

blackshirt Posted April 17, 2018 #3 Share Posted April 17, 2018 I do tip but not necessarily per drink. I've been in some lounges where it quickly became apparent the way to tip was at the end of the cruise or one larger tip each night. Often times a $5 or $10 tip on that first drink is not only sufficient for that evening but service the rest of the evening is very prompt. If I order a mixed drink that takes them time to make then maybe more $ is appropriate. It certainly depends on what you are ordering and if they are serving you well. But normally I drink beer and tip between $1 and $2 per round for me and my wife depending on circumstances. They are more than happy with a $1 tip each time IMO because some don’t at all. I have always gotten to know our go to servers and they are very appreciative and we always become close during the trip. I tip at the end my first time as diamond after reading CC but never again after that. Just kind of a weird thing IMO. They have no idea all week if you are just stiffing them and then they are always slammed the last night. Doing it in increments works much better IMO and then they know you are taking care of them all week.

We also tip $1 if we use our 3-drink cocktail hour card outside of the lounge, and the bartenders seem even more appreciative than the lounge servers. Makes me think some Diamonds do not tip anything, anywhere.
toyman55 Posted April 17, 2018 #7 Share Posted April 17, 2018 When in the casinos, drinks are free but the server is tipped so why should it be different? I don't think it is as much being cheap as much as it is either feeling entitled or maybe just unaware.
SilkySal Posted April 17, 2018 #8 Share Posted April 17, 2018 DH and I always tip $1 per drink in the DL too and enjoy getting to know the servers!:D I even tip the baristas in the Cafes, who make my specialty coffees and I hardly ever see anyone tipping them!:( I think they put a lot of effort in making those different coffees and most guests seem to get so impatient for having to wait while they make them. Ya know, it takes a little longer than just pouring a regular cup of coffee, so guests need to cut them some slack! Also, when you have a drinks package, the baristas are supposed to only give you the "grande" size cup, not the "venti"; however, I order the venti and then hand the barista $1 with my sea pass card and have had no trouble getting the larger cup! After the first visit, they always remember my name and my order!! Sorry I kind of got away from the topic of tipping in the DL and I know they have a special coffee machine in there but it's just not as good as the baristas make it in the cafe, at least IMO!! Cheers!!
Rare mcatmcat Posted April 17, 2018 #9 Share Posted April 17, 2018 What if you don’t drink alcohol, should I also tip 1$ per drink? Sent from my iPhone using Forums
DebJ14 Posted April 17, 2018 #10 Share Posted April 17, 2018 This will be our first time having access to the DL. We are in a GS, so will probably use the Suite Lounge more. In either lounge we will tip as we order drinks. Nothing is more frustrating than planning to give a hefty tip to your favorite barwaiter in the lounge only to find that they have moved him somewhere else the last couple of nights. katiel53 Posted April 17, 2018 #13 Share Posted April 17, 2018 We tip $1 a drink in the DL, even if it is a can of soda. Last cruise we had a couple sit us the first night and they tipped the waiter $5 for the 2 of them. We enjoyed the company of this couple and decided if they were there another night if we were there first, we'd wait for them and vice versa. Long story short, they were there every night early enough to be seated so that when the 4:30 happy hour started, they were seated. When we arrived the second night, we sat with them again. They saw us tip $1 per drink and we probably had 2-3 drinks per night each and one might just be a can of soda. The gentleman told us that they are there from beginning to end of happy hour and that we didn't need to tip "so much" as they tip the $5 a night and that was fine. I just thanked him and continued to do as normal. If we get a drink from a bar during the happy hour time, we also tip $1 a drink. At the end of the cruise, the waiter in the DL that usually serves us gets an additional tip. If though, for some reason we didn't get there the last night, I am not as guilt ridden as I could be because I did tip per drink. JMO.

QueenofKrakatoa Posted April 17, 2018 #15 Share Posted April 17, 2018 Honestly if you can't afford to tip you can't afford to drink. And if your drinks are free, someone is still making them for you and is likely putting up with you being an entitled snot. ("you" being a general term here). njkruzer Posted April 18, 2018 #22 Share Posted April 18, 2018 In the CL lounge i've seen people tip per drink but we have always tipped at the end of the week, probably equals more than $1 per drink. On longer cruises we'll tip midway through also. If we use the lounge in the am we also make sure to tip that waiter. We also tip the concierge, especially if he/she has been helpful. Never had a problem getting service.

dplusd Posted April 18, 2018 #24 Share Posted April 18, 2018 We used to tip DL wait staff at the end of the cruise as we did the concierge. Then on one cruise the DL wait staff changed mid-cruise, so we started tipping nightly. We tip about a dollar or more per drink but not always with each drink. Some evenings if we are short of singles we will tip $5 or $10 with the first drink depending on how long we plan to stay. My point is for the OP...be careful of drawing conclusions based on what you see at an isolated point in time.
