One has issues with flying so definitely do not use a ship. I know... I have a friend whose mother is deathly afraid to fly. She moved to the States from Europe a couple of months ago, and she actually used a TA cruise to get to the States.

I didn’t go with my husband and kids on a Cali vacation because of the flight. I STAYED BEHIND. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever see myself in a flight from PR to Miami. It’s why I cruise... no flights involved. Regardless... I’m alive and my family is alive and well and on ground. I’m making the most of it now. All my complaint is about the short notice... lack of communication by NCL, I wasn’t able to get my cruise photos and crappy airline.... but all in all I’m thankful that we got here in one piece. I’m a platinum with NCL... I’m loyal.... but things could have been communicated a lot more smoothly ESPECIALLY when traveling with kids.
Jolie Posted November 23, 2018 #253 Share Posted November 23, 2018 FYI: Just received my total refund back to my credit card! Now, am I right in understanding that I need to call NCL directly to utilize our free cruise credit that we also received? We are ready to start planning our next cruise since ours got cut short! I think its because the only way to get back to Miami in an emergency from a Caribbean is pretty much flying. You took the chance and gambled. I get it, you don't think something like that will happen until it does though.

In other incidents, the cruise line has booked passage on other ships, (competition included), returning to Miami.

But then someone truly unable to fly could consider using ferries and possibly a trip through Mexico. My point was that flying is not the only way. Nukeworker Posted November 24, 2018 #259 Share Posted November 24, 2018 My wife and I were on the cruise and we totally fear flying. It was somewhat nerve racking but we got back to Miami safely. I give NCL credit for how they have compensated folks but I give them an F for communications. We have already turned our compensation into a 7 night voyage next weekend in an AFT BALCONY for very little extra.

I don't understant this comment "Never in my wildest dreams did I ever see myself in a flight from PR to Miami. It’s why I cruise... no flights involved" It is not unheard of ships having mechanical issues and requiring people to fly back to their original point of embarkation during the cruise. In my normal "dreams" I have considered this possibility.

evandbob Posted November 24, 2018 #262 Share Posted November 24, 2018 The next sailing seems to be affected....according to new postings on the roll call, boarding still occurs on the 26th, but the ship isn't leaving Miami until sometime on the 27th. The 1st port of call Cartegena is being dropped, and now the ship sails straight to Panama. I'll be calling my TA in the morning to confirm these details.

evandbob Posted November 24, 2018 #266 Share Posted November 24, 2018 $50 OBC per cabin and a 1 day pro-rated fare reduction. IMO, ample compensation. Plus, I'll save some $$$ with the casino being closed while stuck in Miami. You can look at Cartagena as being in a drug zone, but you can do the same or worse for almost every Central American (and Caribbean) country too. They all have zika, dengue, chikunganya as well. Cartegena is a World Heritage site designated by UNESCO.

All we've heard along the way was "sorry, we don't have any information for you" and "sorry, we don't work for NCL, and we have no info for you." Not even what airport in Miami we were flying into. Once we board the charter plane, I was able to get that info from the airline crew, but not before that. I looked into booking a NY cruise to still be able to sail this year, but it's twice as expensive, so I'd still have to pony up $2,400 on top of the future cruise credit. 😞

Yes, call direct or via TA. From our experience the future credit will be of base fare - so e.g. when you booked if your pp fare shown on the website showe d $999 before taxes your credit will be less as the $999 has some fees in it. I did see one post saying they did get more though on a cancelled sailing - just FYI.

40yearcruiser Posted November 25, 2018 #274 Share Posted November 25, 2018 Since we are booked on the Dec. 17 cruise on the Jade I have been following this thread with great interest in what's happening on the ship. Very sorry for those of you who had your vacation cut short, but think that Norwegian was very generous under the circumstances. The logistics of disembarking that number of passengers and arranging flights back to Miami must have been a nightmare for the staff. If the next cruise is being delayed a day the repairs must be taking some time. Hope they get it right so there won't by any more mechanical problems to cause similar situations. Too bad that those of you on the next cruise will miss Cartagena because it is an interesting port with lots of history. Keep in mind that the cruise contract you signed says that the cruise line can change the itinerary at any time without liability. So any compensation you get for a delay or port change or omission is solely for goodwill and without obligation of the cruise line. We cruise frequently, on a number of different cruise lines, and whenever we have been delayed or missed a port the only compensation we have received has been the port charges which is usually only a few dollars. Anyway, enjoy your cruise and just "go with the flow" of whatever happens.
