I know how you feel Harry .I got out of hospital in October and that was the last time we saw our grandkids

as the Specialist told me to isolate at home as my heart was that weak running at 20%.and the risk of catching a cold

could have been a disaster for me .Now I'm running at 49% so would have been ok to see them but MR Covid came along .

I had to cancel the New Year Cruise but I think "There will be other times " I can cope with that .

The months of staying in I have learnt to cope with that ,not seeing family is the hard one but I can phone them anytime .

I just keep thinking we will beat this, one way or another and keep looking for the good things we have and what we have done

in our lives. With a good woman to support me what could go wrong .:classic_wink:

When I hear someone say life is hard I can't help thinking compared to what ? Keep smiling .:classic_smile::classic_biggrin:

It's just not being able to see the kids and grandkids that's hard, Kalos.  Especially for the wife.

Everything else is pretty much OK really. Plenty to do, a garden, and groceries to the door fortunately.  Miss the Aldi prices though!

You have a brilliant attitude Kalos.

It must be hard not seeing your grandkids since October.

Fortunately your wife sounds wonderful and you have great cruise memories.

Essex accents are interesting, on a slightly different tack.  Listen to someone from, say, Colchester, talking on record back in the 1950s and compare that with someone now.  The London effect.  And the spread of Estuary English.

That would be me then, as a Colcesterian born in the 50s.

Colchester is still relatively audible

Not so much these days Andy. Colchester has expanded so much in the last 30 years that you will be hard placed to hear the true NE Essex accent. Go to Mersea, and talk to some of the old boys there, and you can still hear it.  However, I fear the dialect will be gone in the next 20 years.

I was born and bred in Colchester, and although I moved away in the 70s, I still return every 5 or 6 weeks (not now obviously unless I want my eyes testing), and the old Essex dialect becomes ever less prevalent.

Colchester is more like Suffolk.Probably the more genuine Essex.Dagenham down to Southend was just the overspill of EastEnders after the war, with all the bomb damage forcing them to relocate.Hence,Estuary English. What part of South London did you live in?

I'm afraid even Colchester's very much felt the effects of London and lost its character (and accent).  Ipswich has just about managed to get away with it, being that bit more difficult to commute from.

Lived in various parts of South London over a number of years - mainly around the Clapham/Streatham area until we moved out a bit further.  Clapham was rough and affordable then - pre-gentrification!

It was a very rich north-east Essex accent - akin to, but not the same as, the Suffolk accent which it merged into as you went a bit further north.  I have some tape recordings of my grandparents which I did back in the 60s - an accent you'd rarely hear now, though I'm pleased it does still exist at Mersea.  As you say, it will disappear.  I find accents fascinating, but they are disappearing.

Your county has several, as you'll know.  Gainsborough is absolutely different from Louth, and both are completely different from somewhere nearer the Norfolk border.  And it isn't all flat - despite the myth!  🙂

Unfortunately,  for the vast majority of the population,  the situation is not that serious. 90%+ of the unfortunate people that have died, have been over 60, many with underlying health issues.

That is in no way to underestimate the danger to to the elderly or those  with underlying health issues. What the government is trying to do is to protect the elderly and at risk, by imposing sanctions on everyone. Obviously the right thing to do at the start, but now some relaxation is required, so cancer sufferers, those needing organ transplants etc can be treated, and also so that the economy can be opened up so that people can start earning again.

As  I said previously, cancer treatment is not being denied everywhere. My Sister in law is being treated at Southend and was offered major surgery in London, but declined that option.

I lived in Tollesbury a few years back and I'm sure there are families still there who have never even been as far as Maldon..

We go to stay in Maldon once a year and the rural places are relatively unchanged.

Having a change in September and goint to Walton on the Naze where I had my childhood holidays..

Lets hope by September the caravan parks are open.

Wow - Walton!  One of my childhood favourites too.  The rides were cheaper there than Clacton so what little money I had went further.

Rural Essex is much underrated.

We rented a beach hut at Waton for two weeks each August, driving there each day in my Dad's A30, and later,  A40. The hut was at the Naze end, near the coastguard station . I can still remember the massive games of cricket we played when the tide was out. Happy days!

We live about 10 miles from Gainsborough.  Wouldn't be our first choice of where to live - the town centre is dying on its' feet, but when we moved back from Spain we wanted somewhere cheap. Louth is nice, as are the Wolds, but connections to the rest of the UK are dire, as you know.

Nice place then, wasn't it.  Spent a lot of time there (even lived there for a while) as a child.  Remember Saturday morning pictures at the Hippodrome?

I went to the Regal, which became the Odeon,  and which now is in a state of total collapse. Successive councils have torn the guts out of the  town.

It’s still very quiet here.  Little traffic etc

However, there are small signs of businesses preparing to reopen; cafes organising themselves for takeaways etc

Its been a long, long, time

If you need a cultural distraction, the National Theatre’s much acclaimed This House, featuring 1974 politics, Heseltine grabbing the mace etc etc (yes, there was politics at times other than this!) is available, for free, on YouTube from 7pm tonight, for 7 days.

We’re planning a nice supper & stay-at-home trip to the theatre tomorrow

Oh, running time 2hrs 40mins, which is civilised

Unfortunately it's practically back to normal here now. Much more traffic on the and people about than a few days ago,  and next door but one are having regular family visits. Hope it’s not the 'Cummings effect'. We shall keep soldiering on and staying safe. That's the 'Avril effect'😉

We life on the outskirts of Nottingham, the traffic now feels back to at least normal weekend levels, with a little bit of rush hour traffic jams starting to appear again.

neighbours are having people over, I think the Cummings effect has put the final nail in lockdown for most people.

It feels the same to me in our part of Leeds. Our hypocritical senior citizen neighbours were grumbling (over the garden fence to me) about people not respecting the social distancing guidelines just a couple of days after they had three different sets of family visiting with kids all welcomed inside their house.

I go out to pick up the bulk of our shopping on a Thursday then to a different store on Fridays for us, neighbours and in-laws. This morning I thought our local M&S got their customer numbers badly wrong and it was overcrowded inside.

I picked up a few items and intended to get out of there as quickly as possible but all 6 self-checkouts were occupied with 2 waiting and there were long queues at the tills. 8am to 9am on a Thursday is for senior citizens so I arrived just after that and should have known what was coming as I was more or less allowed to go straight in. They are usually very good with their queue control and limiting the numbers inside so hopefully this was just a one-off.

I’ve not noticed anything different as haven’t bothered leaving house since Saturday. Just don’t see the point.

hubby has been driving to work and it’s the same traffic as usual for him.

might venture to aldi tomorrow for bbq food but I doubt it.

just wait for confirmation from school on if they are opening on Monday and then o get a video to make our decisions. Not worried about the virus for them but I don’t want them to have to not have fun at school.

Wow I don’t come in this thread for a day or two and loads happens!

Had a lovely day off yesterday as was hubby’s day off too. We ventured out to a country park which is mostly woodland. Felt very safe as not many people there (we went early) Then home for lunch in the garden then hubby had his much longed for ‘tip’ slot booked and he got rid of some of the rubbish we’ve got piled up from our old kitchen, all very organised he said and hardly queued to get in.

Re b&q my hubby has decided our local Screwfix is a much better bet.  You order online and it’s all bagged up waiting for you - normal social distancing queue to get in then you’re in and out in two minutes. You can only go in if you’ve ordered online.

As for people spitting at you Avril that’s disgusting. I worked in Sainsbury’s for a while when my son was little. I had a lady and a girl buying a thank you card for her teacher as she’d passed her 11 plus. I asked her what school she was going to - it was the Grammar school I’d gone to. I said ‘oh I went there’ You should have seen the look on the mum’s face! She was obviously thinking ‘you went to grammar school and now work here’ Snob!!

I know. I went on to night school and got A level Maths and O level English. I find age has a lot to do with it as well. I did till training at work and while training a young college student I happened to mention a qwerty keyboard. 'Oh,do you know what a qwerty keyboard is?' he asked, and I was really insulted. I told him that the hairs on my head might be grey but they're growing out of fertile ground.

Never assume anything.
