Different tines I'm afraid Sue. Leisure sector is decimated, retail sector (other than food) is in tatters, transport industry non existent. Where will the newly unemployed find work?

Plus of course, redundancy payments will  the bare minimum, so not even a decent cash lump sum to fall back on.

Gee. That's the way way cheer someone up. Well done 😉

Not necessarily bare minimum redundancy, depends on the company. I wasn’t lucky with my pension but I was lucky having a Bank redundancy, I know teachers get less than I did.

Oh Bridlington ! I had many, many family holidays there when I was young. We stayed at the bottom end and I remember a small garden opposite the flats that led to the prom .. and an amusement arcade not too far away. Just loved the place and if I remember there was a garden area that we could walk to on the cliffs and something to do with Amy Johnson was it ???

There is also a lighthouse nearby.

Many, many happy memories

I think you are referring to Sewerby Hall, we visited last year and really liked it.

cheers avril and sue. I’m ok I’m just a worrier by nature. I don’t like things out of my control and this takes me completely out.

I get what wowzz was saying though as they are all the same things running through my head. Same with what if the house market crashes, this will give me little equity and when my mortgage comes up for renewal it’s going to be a worse rate. There’s so many things that can happen and will possibly happen.

just gotta keep on moving and carry on.

good old British. Keep calm and carry on😂

either way it’s horrible cos we really are all just in it for ourselves. I’m hoping his job is safe so that we are ok but then there will be someone else in the business in the position I’m worrying about.

anyway looking to the future. The back of a ship (dunno what thats called aft?) is that a bad place to be and are lower or higher decks best?

Yes, sorry Vamps  - I know I was being pessimistic.  However, there will always be openings for specialists, which is what your husband appears to be.

It's the bar staff, shop assistants etc of the world that I feel will struggle.

I think we all have to keep calm and carry on although I grant that for some of us, when this is over, it will be easier for us to carry on. I was lucky to be made redundant several years ago and be offered my pension early. Other self employed part time work (much less this year though) supplements this and should continue to do for at least a few years yet. I have great sympathy for those not so fortunate but am optimistic to think it may not be quite as bad as some people think it will be.

Anyway, for me, the back end of the ship is best (aft is the correct term if you want to show off). I love sitting watching the motion of the sea that we leave behind. It can be more uncomfortable in rough weather and I guess if this is a problem, lower down would be better, although you may get a bit more engine noise if sitting outside. It is further to walk to communal areas of the ship though but handy for the MDR.

he’s an electrical engineer by trade so skilled but I doubt there are many of those jobs. There will be more lower skilled ones at a lot lower wage than he’s on now but we will manage I am sure. I remember it was bad in 08/09 I’m sure it was but we got through it.

No need for sorry. I’m pessimistic too.

I can be a little black cloud sometimes tho so just trying to find the silver linings.

soon as Iona starts sailing then least I can occupy myself planning

it’s cos they have already given me a room number for Iona. Even though it’s over a year away before we sail. I’m on deck 15 so near the top. It’s at the back but on the right hand side of the little flood plans I’ve been looking at. I’m terrible with sea sickness probably shouldn’t do cruises but can’t seem to help myself. It seems as though I have a pool and deck above me so hoping it’s quiet but I was on the azura last year at the very front on deck 7. Ugh I hated it one night. Rest of the week was fine.

We had a busy morning. We finally moved our end of August Iona cruise to next year ( sorry Gary, have a little patience). We also booked a caravan holiday in Cornwall for this July. As you are on Iona at the end of August next year, if you do feel seasick please think of us.  On the right,.  Deck 12,.  just below you. Please give a little warning about what's on its way down😂

We should have been at the back (aft) on deck 15 for the Iona maiden but of course that was cancelled. As we booked a suite, and it was basically take it or leave it, we went along with it because everything else was booked straightaway. I would have preferred to have other cabins on top, not a deck because it can be a bit noisy first thing in the morning as they move sun beds into position. We are on Iona next year hopefully and are on a lower deck. If you booked a saver or early saver, there is little you can do to change. If you booked select, my advice would be to ask for a cabin lower down, and as you get seasick, nearer the middle.

Can't speak for Iona, I'm afraid, but the best times we've had have been on the higher decks of Azura and Ventura - aft.  Splendid views, and certainly not as rough in bad weather as the forward area of the ship.  We had no problems and loved it.

It all seems back to front to me. At least you KNOW if your family has or had the virus. How many people are going to stick to social distancing when they're busily rummaging through racks of  clothing? On the other hand, visiting family does nothing for the economy😊. Must get your priorities right.

I thought you meant that your CLOTHES were back to front 😂

Nice aft balcony view.

Thank you, but after all that time if you came back and said it was rubbish, we would probably still enjoy it. Gary Barlow should still be good.

Oh I don’t doubt that. I’ve read plenty of bad and good reviews with p&o and I’d still end up going with them. The only ship I’ve got to compare it to is azura.

I suspect the new climate will also create a lot of business and employment opportunities we’re not yet aware of.

Sadly a lot of existing business owners could well be at serious financial risk because of debt, but vacuums rarely remain unfilled.  Hotels, for example, rarely close - they just change their ownership when the debts in the hands of the old owners are ditched.

Aft cabins every time for us - the biggest mistake we ever made was doing a 17 night cruise on Ventura in a deluxe cabin right at the front D114. Hated it as soon as we got on board and it was so windy and miserable even in August. We tried the aft cabin we had considered for Ventura on Azura (aft) and it was just amazingly perfect in every way. It was one of the corner aft cabins that have a wrap round balcony --- bliss.

PS Here in SOT all well - the moorhens are still happy, the geese still have their fluffy off spring and the swan is still on her nest

Attitudes are changing, people want to work and the stigma attached to shop work, fruit picking, warehouse work has gone, so I think we will be ok.

Business is looking promising, I think we are going back to a brighter, nicer world..
