Obviously if you die onboard an airplane that would get reported but how on earth would you ever know/show if you got sick on an airplane. The difference is that over a week+ long cruise you can certainly board healthy, catch and illness, get sick, and have the data to show that enough people got sick that there was an outbreak on a ship. I've caught many viruses over the years on vacations. Did I catch it in the airport? on the plane? in a hotel? in a restaurant? at a tourist site?  No idea, I've certainly never traveled by plane, came down with a virus a few days later, and called the airline or CDC to report an illness.

Did you even read the article I posted?

It is the responsibility of the airline crew, not the passenger to report.  And yes, it is very possible that a  passenger could board a plane and be discovered to be sick 8 or 10 hours into the flight.  It is NOT saying that you GOT the illness ON the flight, but that symptoms were exhibited during the flight.

No, I did not read the article.

 

I did see your previous post where you were discussing cruise ships spreading Noro and said "There is literally no evidence that hotels and airline travel contribute anywhere near that level of problems."

 

I suspect that evidence does not exist for the reasons I gave in my post.

Not I.  And we wear heavy duty masks with filters (not N95) and N95 depending on the situation.  And I have COPD.  Is the air flow 100% of no mask?  No.  But definitely not hard to think.

And just hiked 3 miles yesterday, masked, because there was a bit of traffic on the trails.

I do agree, however, that wearing a mask is by no means ideal or comfortable on a cruise ship.  Which is why I really doubt that we would pay the goofy nose-bleed prices of today's cruising to "vacation" that way.

Figured that you didn't read it even though you commented about it (with nothing even remotely relevant to the discussion or the article).

And my "there is no evidence..." I was referring to COVID when I wrote "let alone 2 Princess ships, the Eclipse, sick crews worldwide"  I admit that the wording was a bit less than clear since I did not make a distinction between Noro and COVID.  That was my editing error.

I really wasn't intending to respond to the article. Just the logic of this thought process. And yes, I suspect airplanes and airports have been large spreaders of COVID. The cruise ships are easy targets because it's so easy to see an outbreak. But how many TSA agents and flight attendants have been diagnosed with COVID? And there's no evidence that airports and airlines are not big spreader events??

I would change to next year.if they go Aug 1st which I doubt How many places will be open at the stops. I have heard that most vendors are already closing for the year. The biggest percentage live in lower 48.

Honestly, for deal breakers, generically things that radically change the experience and leave you wondering why you're paying for this, and why you're getting on a cruise ship if there's still enough risk to make that measure necessary. And I'm skewed as I'm in a higher risk category right now, and I'd never be cleared by my physician to get on a cruise ship until there's better control of my own risk.

 

That probably means  that if a mask is even a consideration, on a cruise ship, I'm out. And I'm double out because I'd be depending on others to wear their mask to help reduce my risk, and I can see already  how well that's working with land-based businesses. Live music, sing-alongs, etc., all part of the enjoyment of a cruise, will almost certainly have to be curtailed (some really scary epi studies out there of choirs spreading the virus from an asymptomatic carrier; air travels further when you sing...). There was  a similar thread to this once upon a time, and I think my answer in that was that any of measures people were throwing out as necessary to enable cruising would so change the experience that I couldn't see a reason to get on that ship. Same now.

We actually got them in the Cody Ceci trade.  It was originally an option for a bag of plucks but we upgraded to masks.

We've been sitting in/by our pool for almost 10 weeks straight now, it's not all it's cracked up to be ;) 

 

But seriously, we'll cruise again when there appears to be a good reliable treatment protocol & when masks are no longer necessary to protect one another.    If a reliable vaccine is made available to the general public all the better.  

 

There is the possibility that our travels will change to more land based for a few years, but I'm still hopeful that next May's cruise will go forward as normal.

I’ve been looking at alternative vacations for October and after research we’re sticking with our cruise unless it’s cancelled by the cruise line.  Driving in the US, stopping at public restrooms, fast food, hotels, etc on the way too and from will also expose us.  Staying in higher end resorts are more expensive then a balcony for the same number of nights and exposes us on elevators and dining rooms too.  All inclusives except for the Dominican republic and Mexico are more then the cruise and exposes us on planes and places where sanitation may not be as good as a ship.  We need a vacation from work and we are tired of staying at home, having already missed our spring cruise.  We are going to be careful but go if the ship sails. 

 

Looks like we we might be going alone....

My bet is that it goes back to nearly the same-- and sooner than expected!  To that end, I just booked a November cruise.  There's not as much to worry about once more people get the antibodies.... by then there won't be as many vulnerable people or risk unless there's a new mutation.

Masks certainly won’t be the norm on cruise ships, if it happens with passengers which I actually doubt anyway (think it will be crew only)  it won’t last long.

Instead of stressing out, just cancel, go to a local beach or nearby mountains, be happy and make no cruising plans until you know ships are really sailing again.

I can them having people to wear masks in a few instances:  Embarkation, waiting to disembark to see a port, and waiting for disembarkation when the cruise ends.  Mainly because tons of people will be congregating in many areas in large groups.  I also suspect they're going set up the theater to allow for social distancing.  Couples sitting together, not families.  Mainly having 2 seats for people, 2 seat "occupied" to prevent people form using them, then 2 seats for people, etc.  The dining rooms may have fewer tables and more space between them.  Casinos removing chairs and limiting the betters at each table to the chairs.  And I'm sure they'll devise a system to allow for social distancing at buffets (the food will be served by staff) and bars.

 

If any of that is a deal breaker to you, so be it.  As far as I'm concerned it's a small sacrifice to pay for enjoying a cruise.  And if it helps to prevent any kind of spread of a virus, I'm all for it. One thing to know, if you fly, the airline will make you wear a mask or you will not board.  It's inconvenient to be sure (I hate wearing them too, but I do!), but it's to help keep everyone as safe as possible under the circumstances.

I really think this is the logical answer to much of this. It's not one many here want to do, but a vacation is supposed to be enjoyable. If you're stressing about it way before you even begin travel, something just isn't right. If the various cruise lines decide to go back "too early", and no, I don't know when or what that is, with significant changes in the experience, and something goes wrong anyway, they are at least as bad off, if not worse, financially as if they wait to get it as right as they can.

 

I really think they've got one chance to do this "right" and survive as an industry.

We live in NYC, in Manhattan. We know people who won't wear a mask outside and others who say they don't get flu shots and don't intend to get a covid one when/if it's available. I have actually seen postings on CC by people who say the same about shots.

Bo1953, that's what we're planing on trying to do. Talked to Celebrity and after getting passed around said its better if you go though your travel Company. After 2 messages and an email still have not heard back!

Same here.  Every time I get a flu shot I get violently ill, so that's why I don't get one.  The last time had gotten one it had me missing work for over a week.  Not worth it for me.

Thank you m - I believe they will get it right, to a great degree along with fits and starts, overall.

 

Once there is one line that gets a lot of things going, then other lines will either adapt or improve on the idea in order to get most passengers (that want to sail) back on board or at least me and a few others I know... 😀

 

I believe those who are nervous and skeptical really do need to wait a bit after cruising returns, this way they get to see how things pan out and decide if they wish to return. No muss no fuss..

 

I do agree by far for sure.
