I'm surprised at the number of people who list "masks" as a show stopper.  While I'm not a fan of masks I currently put one on when I need to do errands or run the risk of a social encounter.  Once cruising starts up again if that was the only requirement to adhere too I wouldn't think twice.

I have no problem wearing a mask, I wear one to the grocery store & when picking up DH's RX,  I also keep one around my ncck when running, I can pull it up in the unlikely case that someone gets within 6 feet of me  in order to protect them  (hasn't happened yet)    the reason I wouldn't go if masks where required full time is that it would take away from just about everything that I enjoy while onboard:  drinking lol, socializing in Michaels Club, attending lectures, talking to others at dinner...  I would have no problem wearing one for lining up to board...  the thing is, if conditions are such that masks are needed,  I wouldn't feel safe on board,  how would staff enforce the mask requirement ?  We've all seen the videos of certain people protesting with their guns & no masks....  no desire to be stuck on board with someone like that until this dies down.

I look at wearing masks then would be a "just in case" situation.  You probably won't need it, but it's to make things as safe as possible.  Just a little bit of insurance.

My employer telling me I can't come back to work for 14 days after we get back will be the deal breaker for me. I am waiting for this to happen if someone flies or cruises and for a new travel/vacation policy to happen at work.

I love cruising enough to make some sacrifices, and it helps that our routines do not include the captain's table, spa, art auctions, casino, specialty restaurants, room service, and only rare theatre presentations. We do enjoy the buffet, lectures, trivia, Celebrity Life stuff, hot tubs, and the MDR, with a table for 2 (and they ARE distressingly close). The ports are of primary importance, and the reason we cruise. The deal breaker for us will be vaccinations, and not just the availability of a vaccine. There has to be some way to ensure that those on board are vaccinated. As someone else has pointed out, there are already people on CC who have stated that they won't be getting it, and I assume that everyone on here is committed to travel. I have no problem with the anti-vaxers as long as they realize that public spaces must remain closed to them. Research tells us that a vaccine with 60% protection from the disease, which is apparently a good protection factor, will have to be administered to 95% of the population in order to be effective. These numbers are from one of the many vaccine experts who are appearing on news programs these days, sorry I can't remember the name. I would like it to be 100% on a cruise ship. Exceptions should be for medical reasons only, and proof must be shown for this. I realize some people cannot receive vaccines for medical reasons. "Philosophical" reasons should not be acceptable. Maybe the countries that are being visited by the ship should insist on this.

I agree with this 100%, after vaccine, I can imagine many, many countries that might refuse a cruise ship docking unless they had proof of all passengers having proof of the vaccine. Even flying to Italy for a vacation will probably require proof of vaccine. Charlie

Wearing masks.  If we are required to wear masks, that will be a deal breaker for both my husband and myself.

Same for me.  If it’s necessary to wear a mask that’s a big red flag to me that the coronavirus is still a significant concern and I won’t be on a cruise ship.  It would be the same if there is some type of ‘personal distancing’ scheme in place.

Except airlines DO need to report any illnesses or death to the CDC.  This rule has been in place for a number of years and amended in 2017 so nothing to do with current situation.

Guidance for Airlines on Reporting Onboard Deaths or Illnesses to CDC

Yes, but illnesses caught aboard airlines are generally such that it is virtually impossible to determine exactly where the illness was caught, so they don't get reported.  For example, if I caught norovirus the day after I got back from a vacation - was it from the hotel I just left, or the taxi I took to the airport, or the restaurant I ate at two days before, or was it from the plane??  It might have been from the plane, but there is no way for me to know that and therefore it would never get reported as such.

I understand if an airline were to somehow determine that a number of serious illnesses were caught aboard a certain flight, then yes, I get that would be reported.  And of course staff can report illness that happens onboard.  But common sense will tell you that in most cases illnesses aboard airlines are not traced back to them for reasons like the example above.

That is much different from cruise lines, where passengers are onboard for many days so it is clear when these illnesses multiply while sailing.

I don't get a flu shot but I will take the Covid vaccine when it becomes available.

Please consider a flu shot this year even if you don’t routinely get one.

We, the physician we, don’t need any extra ILIs this next flu season - influenza-like illnesses. People who wouldn’t ordinarily go to the ER, urgent care or even their physician’s office for the “flu”, are going to be encouraged to go for any real symptoms to get a test to exclude Covid.

Every case of influenza that can be avoided frees up resources for someone who might be spreading a life threatening illness.

This has been your PSA, back to regular programming 😃

Dh and I  got the upgraded flu shot this year,  as always.  Three days after flying home to NY from Fla,  we  were  so sick we thought we would die. Many of our symptoms match flu and Covid.    This was early Feb..No  idea if it was flu or Covid which was not on our radar,   but if it was flu, the shot did not work very well. We wondered if this yr's flu vacine was deemed effective for the strain of flu going around?

We are on a waiting list to get tested for Covid antibodies.

We would fly again before we would cruise,...horrible if we got stuck on a  ship.

If you have the COVID antibodies then you are home free for at least some length of time.   Did you end up in the hospital in Feb?   My sister, a physician, says even if the flu shot isn’t effective against all flu it should keep you out of the hospital.   In addition, if you are immune compromised, no vaccine will work well for you.   That’s why you get an extra dose if your over a certain age.   If you are overweight, hypertensive, have compromised lungs or kidneys, you are at high risk for every virus and bacteria and should definitely reconsider any travel.

Preliminary data. Give it time to see if it pans out. I have some confidence, but it’s early studies.

I am hopeful that the vaccine will be more than 60% effective. Flu vaccines have low “effectiveness” because of factors that are particular to influenza viruses. First generation of a vaccine produced as rapidly as this one is going to be, could be an issue, I suppose.

i think it is quite likely that one will have to have more than one shot over a short time period OR that yearly boosters will be required.

i wonder if the vaccine is 95% effective, what % will need to take the shot to give herd immunity.

I don’t think flu shots are ever 100% effective, and in our area there was a fair amount of Flu  B circulating and the shots tend to be formulated to,protect against Flu A more than B. - not sure what was in south Florida or New York.

Flu shots do help make the illness less severe, even if you still catch flu. I also think if you get a shot regularly, some immunity carries over from year to year, but flu shots just don’t give lifelong immunity like measles shots.

For me the deal breaker is if they close the pools.  They need to find a way to keep the pools open.  It's just not a cruise unless you can spend all day by and in the pool.

I have a pool in my back yard, so I don't care about the pools on ships.  Although I do like watching the officers vs. guests volleyball games.  For me, the big deal breaker is masks.  I had to put one on to shop at Costco today (they supply them) and I felt like I was suffocating.  I was in and out of there in no time!  And the mask was promptly deposited in the many receptacles they thoughtfully provided outside the store and in the parking lot.

Even though we have 11 booked in the next 18 months, I fully expect to cancel or be cancelled for most if not all of them.

The experience you describe is fairly close to the one we envision for cruising going forward.  In the way they have been operated in the past (which is what made them special to a large degree) cruises are horrible incubators for any kind of disease.  You just have to look at the Noro outbreaks confirm that, let alone 2 Princess ships, the Eclipse, sick crews worldwide to verify that.  There is literally no evidence that hotels and airline travel contribute anywhere near that level of problems.

When you add the very real danger of having your itinerary altered drastically because of flare-ups, something we had close experience with in February and March I am afraid that cruising is rapidly losing it's attraction for us.  And that is, unfortunately, a sad fact of life.

Actually, all of those places have the same issues with spreading "bugs"....and schools, nursing homes, etc....ANY PLACE where groups gather.  This is nothing new.  It's simple that cruise lines are REQUIRED to report them....other places are not, so they don't.

Thank you m - I believe they will get it right, to a great degree along with fits and starts, overall.

Once there is one line that gets a lot of things going, then other lines will either adapt or improve on the idea in order to get most passengers (that want to sail) back on board or at least me and a few others I know... [emoji3]

I believe those who are nervous and skeptical really do need to wait a bit after cruising returns, this way they get to see how things pan out and decide if they wish to return. No muss no fuss..

I do agree by far for sure.

bon voyage

Agree. Hopefully our Dec 4th Reflection Caribbean will be on . At the moment , being in the UK ,we can’t even get into the USA !!

Maybe we need to take info from Cat and Dod boarding kennels where you have to have written proof from vet that your animal has had current inoculations

Totally agree with you of course.  But curious to see if influenza season next year is much reduced because of all of the COVID-19 measures the world has taken?

Linda in my state (PA) we have been required to wear masks (for quite some time) to go into any grocery store or any other essential business that is open.  It is still hard to even find disposable masks here.  So it is very different for different parts of the US right now.
