The Daily for Tuesday Mar 16, 2021

Dad and I visited Monte Carlo on an Oceania Cruise quite a few years ago.  We took a ship-sponsored shore excursion to St. Paul de Vence.  I remember the day as one of those magical ones that sometimes happen.  When we returned to the ship we had a nice dinner and a bottle of wine on our balcony.  I took probably the best picture I ever got of my Dad.  He loved that shot.  I used it on his Memorial Card and in the newspaper for his Death Notice.

Thank you, Rich, for starting the Daily.  Thank you, Roy, for the lists.  Thank you, Dailyites, for making this thread such a pleasure to read each day.

Good afternoon. Thanks for the Daily and it's anniversary!

I had to google Curlew Day.

The meal and wine sound good.

I've never been to Monte Carlo, although it was a stop on my cancelled April 2020 cruise.

@cunnorl So sorry to hear of your BIL's decline. Prayers.

@mamaofami Good news about DH.

@StLouisCruisers It sounds like your MIL is doing quite well. Hopefully SIL will start visiting her!

I'm feeling better today after sleeping 9 hours last n ight! I've spent the morning messing with my kitchen under-sink water filter. It continues to leak. I had a small container under it and that was filled and overflowed! There was a class action suit against the company about this and water damage, which I didn't know when it was installed.

Prayers to the care list and cheers for the celebration list.

Stay safe. Hopefully spring breakers won't be spreading the virus when they return home.

The news on my BIL is not good. He was starting to do OK, but now he has been on a respirator and unresponsive since Saturday.  It is too much. The rest of the family all 17 have recovered. Thankfully.

 Be Safe

Charlene

Oh Charlene, I am so sorry to hear about your BIL’s downturn, and that you and your family are going through this. He may still pull out of this suddenly - prayers that things go that way for him.

Joy, we bonded as Sisters on the Daily, but we recognized each other as kindred spirits during the saga of Kindergirl, Copper John and her Mom & Stepdad.

Oh my gosh that's right Ann! What a crazy time, right? John was amazing and we had so many people pulling for them. I wonder how her parent's are today?

Hard to believe it’s been thirteen years since we stopped in Monaco for the day. We were on the Rotterdam and didn’t realize at the time how lucky we were to be able to dock rather than tender.  What we saw of Monte Carlo was from the ship since chose to take a ship’s excursion that took us to Nice and Eze.

There was an article on CC a bit ago featuring the news clip when John helped get them home and a report that they were doing well.  But that was a few months ago IIRC.

I found the cruise where we visited St. Paul de Vence and Nice.  It was when we stopped in Cannes in 2013 on the Royal Princess.  I liked St. Paul de Vence more than Nice.  The larger cities don't have the same charm that the villages made of stone and cobblestones, tucked into hillsides do.   JMHO

I totally agree with you.  We preferred St Paul de Vence  too.  But we were truly happy with all the places we visited and so glad we returned as many times as we did to see different places and things.

Did you see the news article about the event? I might still have it, if you did not.  Just let me know.

I seem to remember Kindegirl saying her Mom was a CC roll call person, and reader, but not much of a poster. Or I could be totally wrong.

Yes, I saw the news article and the tv story about Copper 10-8 and her parents.  I also followed Kindergirl's thread.  I remember she was looking for in home help for them just before she returned to Canada, and she said she'd let everyone know how they were doing.  I checked her thread often after she returned to Canada, but never saw a post telling how her parents were.

At that time, I had not discovered the Daily, and that thread was one of the few I followed.  The rest were either negative or just speculation without any real information.  Even now, the Daily is usually the only thread I look at.

Yes, I read that also but it was just after John's "rescue".

@Quartzsite Cruiser Were you by chance on the old Noordam Copenhagen to Rome when 9/11 happened?  That was my first cruise and first time to Europe. Am amazing experience.  I took ships tours everywhere.  In Monaco to Nice, Eze and the casino for a wonderful day.  Not sure I could climb up to Eze again.

My daughter and her two teenagers are slowly recovering from Covid.  Each has a different set of symptoms gratefully not requiring hospitalization but dragging on for over two weeks.  My family and friends have been lucky until now.   Best wishes to all those dealing with the virus and all health issues.

That was the one I was thinking about, but it was posted before Kindergirl returned home.  At the time, I did some digging and found a news clip from a tv station, which I think was in the LA area.

Maybe, Copper 10-8 has more information about the parents.

Didn't she say that after her parents got back to Florida, they were both quite ill and had to be hospitalized?  At the time the fear was Covid, but evidently it wasn't that, I was very nervous that Copper might have caught the bug!

No, we were still in Texas on 9/11 and were supposed to fly to Barcelona on 9/13, but that did not happen.  We were going to join the Golden Princess on her inaugural TA on 9/25.  That was one of the few times we had planned to spend two weeks before the cruise touring Spain.

We decided, if at all possible, to still fly to Spain when the planes resumed flying and to see as much of it as possible.

We flew out the Monday after 9/11, and spent a week in Spain.  The cruise was interesting and it was interesting to visit Europe with fewer tourists than normal.  The ship was in Istanbul on 9/11, and Princess let anyone who did not want to fly home, stay onboard to FLL free.

The Europeans were so nice and accommodating to all the Americans pre-cruise and during the cruise.

Yes, that was a problem.  When they were released from the hospital, her mother wanted to do everything and even do the shopping.  That was why she was looking for help for them.

Good morning.  Late to the party today, forgot to charge my computer last night.  Thank you Rich and Roy for your dedication.  Debbie that meal looks delicious.  Will print the recipe for later.  Roy your meal sounds fantastic as well.  We've never been to Europe so all these ports are wonderful to read about.  Would have made it to Monte Carlo in November but cancelled the cruise.

Like others had to google curlew.  Saw the Giant Panda's in San Diego several years ago.  Such beautiful creatures.

Prayers and toasts to our lists.

Stay safe, social distance, and wear your mask.

Old Fashioned:

Ingredients: 1 1/2 oz Bourbon or Rye whiskey, 1 Sugar cube, 2 dashes Angostura bitters, Few dashes plain water
Preparation: Place sugar cube in old fashioned glass and saturate with bitters, add a dash of plain water. Muddle until dissolved. Fill the glass with ice cubes and add whiskey. Garnish with orange slice, and a cocktail cherry.
Served: On the rocks; poured over ice
Standard garnish: Cocktail cherry, Orange slice

I only had one once.  I liked but I prefer a Whiskey Sour.

I think I found some pictures of Monaco that are a little different from those posted previously.

In 2004 on the Noordam, we were there the week before the Grand Prix.  It was interesting seeing the set-up for the race, even if it made walking around town a challenge.

In 2019 on the Veendam, we were there three times and got to dock twice.  On the second visit, we did the Ho-Ho and got off at the palace.  They were testing a self-driving vehicle to use in the narrow, crowded streets in the area.  We got to ride in it from the palace to the aquarium.  In the second picture, the man with the tablet was controlling the vehicle at times and trying to adjust the program, so the ride was a little jerky with starts and stops.  It was interesting, but I will say there were a few bugs that needed to be fixed.

Doing the dance of joy!!  The Chickasaw Nation (bless them) has open vaccine availability to anyone in Oklahoma.  We have to drive two hours, but who cares, I get my first shot on Thursday morning!  Then we have to hustle back so DH can get his second on Thursday afternoon.  The next step toward stepping on a blue-hulled beauty in December.

Another wonderful Port to explore Monte Carlo ! We have been there a few times on a coupe of cruises  (on the Noordam for one  ) ,  on some road trips through Europe from the Netherlands and also for a one week stay for a conference in the Loews Hotel , the one the formula  -1 race goes under through the tunnel on the week when the race was going on .

The old town of Monte Carlo and see the change of the guards at the palace , the cathedral where Princess Grace was buried are nice to visit (  I even ran into Prince Rainier once ) but our favourite places to see were Eze , Nice and St Paul de Vence  . I see there were already quite a few pictures  but I will add some more from when we were there .

Good afternoon everyone and Happy Anniversary to all of us at the Daily!!  Thank you Rich for keeping the Daily going for 1 year!  Thank you Roy for your lists, I'm going to have to look up when you started posting the Care/Celebratory Lists.

I thought I read curfew when I saw curlew!  🙂  I had to look it up.

I was so excited about today's port because Craig and I have been there!  But I'm posting late because it took me some time to find the pictures (which are on a CD) and then to find the CD holder on the computer, I had the flashlight out and searched all over that thing.  I never did find it but Craig had a break and helped me out, it was very hidden, and he ended up having to set it on it's side to load the CD, whew..... and now we have lots of dust bunnies to clean.

We visited Monaco on the Rotterdam, May 2001 and tendered.  I would love to go back to see more, it was just beautiful.  Like everyone else we gawked at the yachts.

They were preparing for the Grand Prix which is held in May:

There were tires everywhere, especially on the curves and turns:

We walked around prior to our tour:

Our DD's boyfriend at the time was into Ferrari so when we came across this on our walk we just had to take pictures, that's Craig 20 years ago:

We found a lovely restaurant and ate outside, I wish I had the name of the restaurant.  BTW, I'm wearing a leather jacket that I had purchased in Barcelona (our embarkation port) and I still wear it occasionally:

We then went on our tour and the first part was a walking tour visiting the palace and the surrounding area:027_24.thumb.JPG.d07deb0679979e44a2bc4d28126fe15e.JPG

And the church where many of the Grimaldi's are buried, including Princess Grace:026_23.thumb.JPG.bc5adfc9788c37b318b62c1ff86acd34.JPG

View from above:

Then we bused to the casino and toured the inside, I even dropped a few coins in a slot machine, just to be able to say I had gambled there:

I haven't read all of today's posts so hopefully I haven't repeated too many pictures.

Have a great day everyone!
