There are areas in Connecticut that are bad. My grandfather had a camera store in Hartford. Yuck. The worst thing about Connecticut is the weather. It is also a somewhat boring place.

And, another reason for me not to want to visit Florida for probably 2 more years.  If a cruise line requires proof of vaccination, he'll probably sue them, too, saying his Executive Order against any kind of proof or denying access holds up for ships, also..

Oregon coast --- actually big whoop;  It's pretty easy to protect an area where  no one wants to hang out.  Yes -the Oregon coast is beautiful and wild and unspoiled - but it is cold, generally unfit for swimming (except, perhaps, as part of SEAL fitness training) and after you have shivered in the wind, listening to the roaring surf for a while , it is time to move on.

Yes - CT has its own little patches of Hell.  Bridgeport, Thomaston, New London, etc. (certainly nothing to compete with Baltimore). But for someone from Maryland to criticize the weather is simply funny.  Yes, we get a touch of winter - but falls and springs are unmatchable - and summer in CT can occasionally get a bit too warm and humid -- but how about Maryland?

Spring and fall here are excellent. Winter isn’t to bad. I live in the weird DC snow hole. It is like a donut, snow all around but not in the center. About two inches snow total all winter. July and August can be hot and humid for sure. The weather is a lot better than Chicago where I grew up and Houston where I was before here. Baltimore I stay away from for sure. The DC area has a lot of walkable neighborhoods, the Metro, and no need to a car. Museums, orchestras, night life, restaurants, festivals. Not boring like Connecticut which is mostly a suburb of New York City. 😀 However we do have too much of the meritocracy here. The vaccine rollout here was woke which means nothing but feel good and screwed up. A lot of that type people make me want to gag. So after 35 years in Maryland I am probably leaving.

We used to swim off the beaches in Santa Cruz when we were kids.  Wouldn't do it now.  And further north, it is much too cold without a wet suit.  However, surf fishing can be excellent.  In fact I will be doing that early next week for a few days (N. Calif, not Oregon).  Roughing it in a generator powered RV with food off the grill for a few days.  Living the life.  haha.

I realize the occasional OT exchange is to be expected, but lately it seems like I can click on thread after thread and the "unread" (new) responses have nothing to do with the title.

Sad, but not unexpected news about Prince Phillip.

 

When threads swerve so far off topic I often think it's because some people are unhappy with the general direction of the debate and want to kill the thread.

 

The filing strikes me as futile. Given the rapid rate of vaccinations and the speed of courts the entire situation will likely be moot before the first arguments are made.

Pretty much every TV channel dropped their programs to talk about Prince Philip over here, I guess since were part of the Commonwealth it is to be expected. To be fair most people have been waiting for him to die, I think it was pretty clear he was near the end when he left hospital.

Yep. Those East Coast people seem to think that the ocean is meant for swimming. HAHAHA.

You are talking maybe Chesapeake Bay - possibly a bit of LI Sound, butsurerly  not the south shore of LI or around Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard --but from one from red tide bloom land I guess you cannot expect too much coastal knowledge.

Do you think they will get anywhere with the lawsuit?   I honestly don't know but would think by the time it plays through the courts COVID will hopefully be managed.

Depends on the courts. DeSantis first needs a favorable Florida district court to pass an injunction and get it upheld in the circuit court.

It really looks to be only a matter of time before there is sufficient data for the CDC to conclude cruising no longer poses a significant danger. 

 

I do wonder if any district court would be willing to overrule a federal health agency in the midst of a declared health emergency.

Sure seems like things are moving in that direction to me.  Mrs Ldubs and I ate inside a restaurant for the first time in over a year.   I'm so used to social distancing it felt odd.  Even when things are officially deemed safe  I will probably tip-toe back to "normal".      

 

BTW, as for the restaurant experience, it was one of our old sushi haunts. They did a good job spacing tables out.    Food was great.  It was a terrific experience even if the prices were way up.

That depends on the first qualifying statement I used: " where the ocean is warm enough for swimming".  When I lived in NY, I could swim in the Hamptons, Jones Beach or at Fire Island, or further south along the Jersey shore.

Now that I live in SWFL or red tide central, my ideal ocean temperature is closer to 90 degrees. But the jellies are all over, expanding their territory every year.  And fuhgeddabut about sargasso....beaches are wracked with its

That explains a lot.  You have gotten soft - and are paying the price.  Along the South shore of Long Island and up to Cape Cod the ocean is great (and refreshing) for swimming (70F+) from late June through early October (late May through the end of October -at 65F+  if you are not soft).  That is four months -enough for a swimming season.

 

Then, also, Florida is (in my view) uninhabitable from early May to mid-November-- when you have to breathe canned air.  It is an acceptable short-term alternative to CT , where we run our A/C perhaps 20 days and maybe a dozen nights per year-- we regularly spend a few weeks mid-March-early April on Sanibel on the Gulf Coast, after a couple of January weeks on ST. Maarten.

He is probably also looking at extending his Executive Order which prohibits a business from requiring a vaccination or proof thereof in order to enter and his EO that bans vaccination passports in Florida.  If he can get his "proof" EO to go to cruise ships, what could happen???   But, then, the lines have to find another port which will take unvaccinated tourists...

I suppose a person without interests can feel bored anywhere.  I am within fifteen minutes of a beach and where my boat was moored;  about an hour from Yankee Stadium and Citi Field; an hour and a quarter from Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Opera, and New York’s museums; maybe 90 minutes from a couple of casinos with show venues, and ocean beaches on the south shore of Long Island, and two hours from some of the best ski slopes this side of Aspen.

 

I might agree that the “worst thing” about Connecticut is the weather.  It rains some time, we get a few inches of snow in the winter, there may be a dozen nights each year when we need air conditioning rather than open windows.  But then, pretty much everywhere has weather that some people do not like.
