Good Morning Everyone from a warm and sunny day at the beach

Love todays quote, it made me laugh. I havent had mac and cheese since I was in college ( almost 50 years ago) It was the only thing the cafeteria didnt mess up, so I ate it almost everyday. I swore once I graduated, I would never eat it again and I havent.

We were in Nuku Hiva in 2019 on the Eurodam. Interesting port, very beautiful. There was only 1 tour and it was with any local that had a car or truck. We rode caravan style around the island. Our driver did not speak English and my French is extremely limited but we managed. They would stop at different sites and there was 1 English speaking guide who explained everything. I enjoyed it.

    Water aerobics this AM.

Stay safe and enjoy today

Good Morning:

Celebrating the storming of the Bastille coupled with Pandemonia Day presents a bit of a problem for me this year. Too much recent pandemonia. So I will skip that.

Mac and Cheese sounds great and I am very familiar with the wine selection. I have never had grog but it sounds interesting.

Stay safe everyone

Good morning all. Praying for those on the care list and celebrating with those on the celebration list.

So happy that I can add my sister to that last list. After 6 and 1/2 hours of surgery yesterday, her Drs at M D Anderson are confident that all cancer has been removed. After one last chemo treatment down the road a few weeks (to catch any stray cell that may have “escaped”) she should be at the end of this battle. Thank you all for your prayers, thoughts and kind wishes which have been a great encouragement to all of us. 😁😁😁

Barb

That is fantastic news for your sister yourself and all your family and friends.

Good morning dear friends. Thank you Rich for our Daily, Roy for the prayer and celebration lists and including Allen, and to all who contribute.

Roy I would love to have your meal. I love duck.

Terry, sweet Camilla still in my Daily prayers. She's blessed to have such a loving caring family.

Barb great news on your sister!

Carol I too struggled after Allen's first stroke. 6 weeks in hospital and acute rehab and not being home was terrifying. Followed by 18 months of 3 days a week in therapies, then 2 more years of physical therapy. I had many a heartache and tears but Allen's strength and faith kept me from falling apart. We are blessed with the gifts God offers.

Jacqui, I would like to share YOUR Cheerios please!

Does anyone else ever retrieve the box to reread instructions for stuff you've made 100 times?

image.png.0b05e543fbb4de929aa83523e97b5042.png

For Allen's birthday we are meeting friends at Ichiro Bistro and then a country band concert tonight. Happy 78th to my sweet husband!

Cheers, blessings and prayers.

Ah, you're my soul sister.   I remember buying macaroni and cheese because it was 4 boxes for $5.   Nice and cheap.  Of course, we made it without the milk and butter because we were poor college students.  I haven't had it since, either.  The one other banned food item is jello.  I associate that with hospitals.

Good morning from central Texas.  An interesting collectionof days, but we don't need more pandemonium.  It's been years since I had mac and cheese, but I like it.

I'll pass on the wine and drink of the day, but will check out the recipe.  It might be good to fix for the two vegetarians in the family.

I like the Levenson quote.

@mamaofami  Carol, it sounds like things are working out and stettling into a routine.  Crying is a good strees reliever.

@wandb  Great news about your soster"s successful surgery.

@rafinmd  Roy, good news about the scout's surgery.  Glad both are now recovering.

@grapau27 Graham, thanks for the picture of Lake Windemere.  That was an answer to a trivia question on the Veendam in 2019.

We have been forunate to visit Nuka Hiva twice. in 2002 on the Volendam APEC cruise and in 2004 on the Tahitian Princes.  In 2002, there were no tours offered as it was a relatively new port, but we were lucky to find a French lady who gave tours in her Land Rover Discovery.  The first group of pictures are from our 2002 tour.  I will not show the Survivor Beach again.

On our tour, we drove into the interior of the island, and our first stop was at a small hotel and restaurant where we had a beer and fried taro, which was good.  We also got a look at their hydroponic garden and some of their fields.  I thought the gardens might interest the Garden Club.

Good morning.  Will celebrate Bastille and Macaroni and Cheese Day.  No thank you to Pandemonium Day.  Will pass on the meal.  Have not been to today's port, looking forward to the photo's.  I LOL'd at the Levenson quote.

Prayers for the care list.  A toast to the celebrations.  I'm off to a massage this afternoon, much needed for a persistant mild headache.

Stay safe, social distance, and wear your mask.

Found a lot of information about Grog this morning.

Grog:

Grog is any of a variety of alcoholic beverages. The word originally referred to rum diluted with water, which British Vice-Admiral Edward Vernon introduced into the naval squadron he commanded in the West Indies on 21 August 1740. Vernon wore a coat of grogram cloth and was nicknamed Old Grogram or Old Grog.
To make the original Don the Beachcomber Navy Grog, place in a cocktail shaker 3/4 ounce each fresh lime juice, white grapefruit juice, and club soda; 1 ounce each gold Demerara rum, dark Jamaican rum, and white Cuban or Puerto Rican rum; and 1 ounce honey mix (1:1 honey and water). Shake with ice, then strain into a glass with crushed ice (or ice formed into a cone around a straw). There are several variant recipes, however, and most of these use fresh lime juice and grapefruit juice along with the rums. Some, though, also add passionfruit juice, while others use guava juice or club soda water instead. Some recipes specify a sweetening agent of honey mixed with unsalted butter, while others use honey mixed with water.[3] Unlike other famous tiki cocktails such as the Zombie or Mai Tai, Navy Grog uses no exotically flavored syrups such as orgeat or falernum.
The Trader Vic’s Navy Grog is significantly different from Don the Beachcomber’s. Although Trader Vic’s Navy Grog Mix is no longer available for purchase, this recipe seems to duplicate it: Ideally, use a Trader Vic’s large Mai Tai glass (available for purchase on their website) and fill it about a quarter inch from the top with blender-crushed ice (a few larger pieces keep it colder). In a martini shaker, put one ounce each of light rum (recommended: Havana Club 3, Caña Brava, Cruzan), Gold rum (recommended: Appleton, Mount Gay), and 151 demerara rum (recommended: Lemon Hart) or dark rum (recommended: Myers’s), one ounce of freshly squeezed lime juice (or a bit more to taste), 1/2 ounce freshly squeezed (ideally white, but red works too) grapefruit juice, and a teaspoon (or a bit more to taste) of Allspice Dram (St. Elizabeth). Add simple syrup to taste, at least two teaspoons. Stir and pour over the ice. Add a generous sprig of mint, half of a partially squeezed lime, and a rock candy stick (available on Amazon). Enjoy...but no more than two. Best with Crab Rangoon and hot mustard sauce, spare ribs, egg rolls, etc.

Wow.  All versions will cause one not to feel too much pain.

Good morning, thanks for the Daily!  A little late to the party today because we didn't sleep well last night.  We usually keep the windows open all night to let the cool air in, but there was so much smoke from the northern wildfires that it made it difficult to sleep.  Even shutting the windows didn't seem to make a lot of difference because the smoky air had permeated throughout the house.

An interesting group of days to celebrate - Happy Bastille Day to those who celebrate, I'll pass on the pandemonium, and we don't have mac & cheese often, so will pass on that.

Yesterday was wonderful, getting together with 8 other colleagues at a restaurant where we could mingle freely, knowing we were all vaccinated and relatively safe being together again.  The 2.5 hours passed so quickly, we couldn't believe when we started seeing people coming in for lunch!

I'm glad I made the pork loin in the slow cooker last night because it means I don't have to cook tonight - leftovers! The only thing I'll do is make up a potato salad (like @StLouisCruisers, I have some potatoes that need to be used), so that's going to be an easy dinner tonight.  And wine.

@Seasick SailorHappy Birthday to your DH!

@wandbgreat news about your DS!

@rafinmdso good to hear both scouts are on the mend.

Prayers for everyone who needs them and even for those who don't think they do.  Raising the glasses to toast all on the happy list.  Be safe, stay well, wash your hands, wear your masks when you need to, and hydrate!

Smooth Sailing!  🙂🙂🙂

Thank you for the Bastille Daily, Rich.  I'll pass on the Pandemonium and Mac and Cheese was yesterday.  Love the Levenson quote.  Looks like Nieuw Statendam will be anchoring off Everglades rather than entering but should be visible on one of the beach cams at times and Nieuw Amsterdam is very much on the home stretch.  I've been to Nuka Hiva but always on Crystal.  I'll pass on the enchiladas.  My alternative is Fresh Fruit with Peach Schnapps, and Roasted Duck with Sour Cherry Chutney as served on MS Rotterdam (VI) Bastille Day 10 years ago.

Today’s care list:

Welfare of furloughed crews
Garlictown difficutl recovery from arm surgery
Western wildfires

Scout Jamie C in hospital for major surgery
Marmot@sea’s cousin close to wildfire
bennybear DD(shingles) and DSIL(Infection)
wandb’s sister in surgery

From the rotation:
wandb sister-finished with aggressive ovarian cancer treatments
Sharon’s mother recovering from surgery

Celebrations and Shoutouts:

Happy Birthday Allen
Front Line Health Care Workers
Explorer OTS housing Surfside first responders
highland cruiser at Diamond Lake
St. Pete Cruiser on a road trip
CatShepard in Iceland
Pope Francis out of hospital
Lindaler visit from DD and Grands
Schiedyk oil leak contained
Group breakfast for Ger_77
Promising caregiver for an improving Sam
Cruising-along Grandson’s cast off
Denise on her wilderness adventure
and Staff Captain Sabine, HAL’s likely first female Captain(I know this is a repeat but she’s worth it)

Roy

Thanks for the Care and Shout Out list.   There is a Carnival ship docked at pier 2 this morning.  Perhaps that is why the Nieuw Statendam is anchored off the beach.  The ship is clearly visible from the Beach Camera at the Hilton om the beach.

Good Morning All,

Getting a late start today. Not sure why I slept in, but I did.☹️

We had chicken and zucchini enchiladas with tomatillo sauce last night, so will finish them tonight. It’s sort of a version of the meal of the day. And we observed Pandemonium Day yesterday, when one of the dove babies decided to fledge. It ended up on a padded chair on the patio, about 2 feet in front of the sliding glass door. This put it at eye height of our Golden Retriever, who whined, yodeled and carried on for a couple of hours. He may be a Golden, but he has the persistence of a terrier. As of last night the sibling was still in the nest, so we might have a repeat performance today.

Today’s wine report from Cat:

Chateau Ste Michelle Chardonnay Canoe Ridge Estate

All vintages of this Chardonnay have very good – excellent ratings and decent prices. I found many online distributors with prices starting at $19.99. You might find it for less locally.

Winemaker Notes
The 2018 Canoe Ridge Estate Chardonnay is refined and elegant and offers apple and citrus aromas with a clean, refreshing finish. We age the wine in lighter French oak barrels to maintain the fresh, elegant style of this Chardonnay. Ideal pairings include salmon, crab cakes, and pork.

WE90 Wine Enthusiast
Aromas of peach, straw and sweet spice lead to stone fruit flavors that are rich in the center. Like many wines from this vintage, its appeal is much about the balance it brings.

Have a great day everyone!
