Tuesday, October 8, 2024 Fleet Report & Daily

Posted (edited)

Good afternoon, thanks for the Fleet Report and Daily!  Podiatrists, microwave ovens and hydrogen and fuel cells are all important - at this point all I've ever really used is the microwave.  We got our first one in 1977 courtesy my DMIL who worked at Eaton's department store; she got it with her employee discount.  It took 2 of us to carry it into the house from the car and it lasted almost 15 years.  Now one person can easily lift them but their lifespan is around 5 years and then it's time for a new one.  I like today's quote.

Late to the party again, but part of it was the fault of CC which was offline this morning.  I thought it was my computer, but after trying a couple of different browsers as well as my phone, soon realized it was the site, not me.  Whew!  And after consulting with a couple of Daily friends, found that they were unable to connect as well.  It's amazing how it really did cause some anxious moments - it felt strange not being able to connect with the people I'm in touch with on a daily basis.

@StLouisCruisersI hope DH's dental appointment went well.  Super WOW on the Christmas stocking - I haven't done cross stitch in a number of years and know how much work has gone into this one.  It truly is a keepsake.  Sending prayers for Morgan's safety (is Rossi her puppy or boyfriend?  I'm thinking puppy.)  No matter, I do hope they're both safe.

For all the Daily friends who are in Milton's path, I send you our good vibes and prayers for safety and limited damage.  Please stay in touch when you can.

@0106It isn't easy being full time care-giver as well as chief cook and bottle washer all at once; I feel your pain.  Hopefully your DH's recovery is going well and you'll soon have him able to help with some of the daily tasks.

@ellbelleplease wish your DD a very Happy Birthday from me!

After not being able to log into CC this morning, I had to go out for a gel nail fill; it should have taken place last week, but with the ugly cold I had, I didn't want to spread it around to anyone, so delayed the appointment.  I came home, we had lunch, then DH wanted to take the roofless car out for "just one more ride", so we loaded up a large grocery bag with cans of cat food that Sochi couldn't eat (caused u-g-l-y tummy troubles that make owning a long haired cat a real trial) to donate to SCAT - the Street Cat organization where we adopted Sochi.  They take in strays, spay/neuter them and put them up for adoption, so we like to support them whenever we can.  On the way home we stopped at Dairy Queen and picked up a box of Buster Bars (like a revel with peanuts in the chocolate shell) and delivered them to Ollie to brighten up her day.

Now we're home and will be enjoying some time in the warmth of the deck with books and possible naps thrown in as well.  I'd like the muffins, but will pass on both the drink and the wine.  We've got some leftovers to take care of, so it'll be a repeat of last night's sausage and perogies (potato & cheese for DH, sauerkraut for me) and peas & carrots that we can enjoy on the deck tonight.  And wine.

Prayers for everyone in Milton's path, for those still suffering from Helene's wrath, and all those involved in wars.  Cheers to everyone with something happy going on today.

Smooth Sailing!  ☺️☺️☺️

@ellbelle Happy Birthday to your DD. The dinner plans sound wonderful.

@StLouisCruisers I wish Morgan would get further away from Tampa.  I will be nervous until this is over and we know she is safe.  That stocking is gorgeous!  You did a wonderful job on that and Christopher will be thrilled to get it.

I remember reserving a rental car in Hilo for our upcoming Hawaii cruise, but I can't find the confirmation and don't remember who I reserved it with.  I can't search for reservations on the websites of the agencies because I can't find the confirmation number to do so.  Any ideas?

Debbie, I don't have an answer, but besides having the emails, I always print the confirmation and save it with my cruise documents.  Most of the rental cars in Hilo are at the airport if that is any help.  One suggestion is to look in the trash file on your email.  Did you book it directly through the rental car company or through a third party like Costco travel or AARP.  If so, they should have a record of the reservation.  Sorry I  couldn't be more help.

Good Afternoon from a very cloudy day at the beach

Very late to the party today. First it was CC and then more hurricane prep.

we had to move things up off the floor in the garage . I rearranged my freezer so that anything that could be cooked on the grill was on one side. Everything else I have been cooking .
Now have big tubs of ice ready to go in the freezer. We have storm shutters on all windows and they will come down in the morning. All patio furniture is away.
so now we wait. Please stay safe all those in the path of this storm.

Sorry , not Gary, but I have never needed pesos cruising Mexico. Most places take cash or credit cards. I have always tipped in dollars. Now, traveling within Mexico may be different but not the typical cruise ports.

Ohhhhh, my DM’s favorite lunch place on a Friday because they are only open for lunch Friday, Saturday, Sunday. I love their prime rib. Yum!

Thanks Sharon -- that's what I was remembering but I have been reading credit cards & USDs have fallen out of favor.

Good afternoon,

It's been a quiet and rainy day here.  I have stew in the crock pot and will make baking powder biscuits to go with it.  Also continued getting rid of/donating toys that the DGSs have outgrown.  DD says their school may want the colored construction paper and some of the other craft supplies.  I hung on to a lot of things far longer than needed.  Next to tackle will be the basket of childrens' books.  I think I'll ask some of the neighbors who have small children if they'd like some of them.

It may not be true, but I actually heard it from medical personnel way back when the vaccinations first became available --  that it's good to mix it up -- not stick with just Moderna or Pfizer.  Has anyone else heard that?  In any case, we've gotten both and I honestly don't remember either of them giving me more side effects over the other.

Thanks everybody.  I've offered Morgan some of the shelter info and free ride info and even an offer from Ann @cat shepard to take the evacuees in.  She said right now they are at a friend's place northeast of Tampa in Tampa Palms which is outside the flood zones.  However they still have high winds to worry about and were discussing moving further north.  Hopefully they will make a good decision.  I'm more worried about her than I am about my own issues.

I did finish Christopher's stocking and have a photo or two to share.

It was again a rush of be ready for 8AM PT but I was actually prepared when they came, went down by wheelchair, and took a warmup walk with the walker. The rest of the time was split between walker and cane,  2 moderate walks with the cane, climbing curbs with both cane and walker, and negotiating carpet with the walker.

After an hour break Speech therapy was the usual breathing exercises.

Another half hour until OT , wheeling over to the gym, a warmup walk with the walker, and some practice standing in front of the big video board practicing hand eye coordination.  We finished with some arm exercises.

A break from noon to 2.

The half hour of OT I spent time on a hand-foot bike.  I hate the thing and it has bad memories as it was what I was doing when the AFIB was detected.

Final session was recreation therapy and a repeat survey measuring my confidence levels.  We closed things out with a short time outside.

Final full day of therapy tomorrow.

Please tell your daughter happy birthday from us and enjoy the dinner!

@StLouisCruisersPerfection is the word when I saw the Christmas stocking! Truly amazing. Thanks for sharing. Do you have a photo of all the stockings you've done?

DH saw the podiatrist last week and is now on the surgery waiting list for bunions. And wouldn't you know it? They called today and had a cancellation so would next week work? Uh, no-we leave for Athens on the 27th so I don't think he'd be up for any walking tours that quickly. And the February schedule isn't available yet, so we wait.

I had no idea CC was down this morning, but on work days it's generally late morning before I can check it. Never seen a podiatrist and I remember being gifted my first microwave in the very early 1980's. The current one is a big one - has to be close to 30 years old (or older). It was old when I moved it up here from Ft Myers 14 years ago, and though the inside light died and it takes a bit longer to heat stuff, it still works. I want it to last until I retire in a few years - I'll throw it away or leave it behind and buy a new (big) one when we get home. One less thing to move!

I'll pass on the drink & wine, might enjoy a muffin someone else made, and lately feel like I've been to the port (thanks to the bloggers on the Legendary/Majestic Japan cruse) but in reality I have not. Thanks to everyone for the gorgeous photos.

@grapau27 Good news being skin cancer free!

@StLouisCruisers Florida actually does a pretty good job in determining where it's safe and where it's not safe, erring strongly on the side of caution. If Morgan's friends are outside of the evacuation zones they should be ok. Any shelters must be certified to withstand hurricane conditions, so while those would not be as comfortable as staying with friends, they'd also be safe, even within the more dangerous areas. The authorities have been encouraging people to go stay with friends/family outside of the evacuation zone vs going to shelters - partly because they'll be more comfortable, but also to leave room in the shelters for those with no alternative. My guess is the aquarium is not certified - and therefore they can't allow anyone to "evacuate" to there. The window of opportunity to go anywhere is quickly closing - down home in Lee County (Ft Myers) they don't want anyone on the road after 10pm tonight. I would think the same is true (or similar) up in the Tampa area.  On a more pleasant subject - your work on the stocking is GORGEOUS! Wow! Christopher will surely treasure it.

@St Pete Cruiser will be thinking of you tomorrow night & into Thursday - hope you & your family fare ok in the storm

As for us, up here in Gainesville we expect tropical storm winds and some rain. In other words - nothing significant. Hopefully we won't even lose power. We have teams of our nurses and maintenance guys staying overnight tomorrow, ready to respond if anything happens (maintenance) or nurses can't get in to work in the morning. A couple of us will open and man the command center overnight, to provide the management presence and direction whatever might happen.

Down home (Ft Myers) my home is in zone A, which has had a mandatory evacuation since Monday afternoon. Storm surge is the big threat, and we're very close to the shore. Just keeping fingers crossed at this point, hoping to continue my streak of never using the flood insurance I've been paying for since 1986!

Good morning, it's pleasant here, but I'm saying prayers for all in the path of Milton.  Sounds very scary there...

I'm making lasagna soup, maybe I got the recipe here.  We're going by DSIL to get rid of her old bed.  The frame broke last week, so a new one has been ordered...this one is at least 50 years old!  Lasted a long time!  I'll bring her a bowl, she doesn't like to cook anymore.

Thanks for all of the info here...prayers for all in need. @StLouisCruisershoping you're feeling better after your biopsy yesterday.

Have a good day, Karen

I made sure to tell her what to take like you suggested in case they go to a shelter.  I wonder when I'll hear something - probably from DD.  Thank you Maureen.

Sandi, maybe I misunderstood but I thought most of mid Florida from west coast to east coast is under a flood watch. The Weather Channel is showing video of people in Orlando bagging sand. The forecast models are scary. About the stocking….. WOW!!!!!  It’s absolutely amazing. You have a great ability to do such intricate needlepoint. I’m sure it will be a treasured keepsake.

Sharon, the map of Hillsborough County showed their location as out of the worst of the flood zones. It appeared much safer than right along the water.  Only A, B, and C were told to evacuate.  No idea where they are now though.  Thanks for you sweet comments about Chris's stocking.  I'm so glad it's finished!

Sandi, Sharon is right about flooding.  As of now, if Morgan could make it to me - she would be safe. But we are all watching closely because a bit more of a veer to the North and Milton crosses very close to me. Right now it crosses just between Charlene & the very Southern border of my County.  I am at the opposite border.

The Daytona Shores folk are probably worried about a repeat of Ian. Some have just returned to their condos & homes.

Once again, happy not to be on the Coast or Intercoastal.

I have no idea what their discussion today arrived at.  I hope they and any friends of theirs are all going to be just fine.  That's all I can pray for right now.  If I lived in Florida I'm not sure where I'd settle because you never know where you will be safest from these horrendous storms.

Hi everyone,

Got though the hair appointment and PT and am now sitting in the Dental office while Jim is getting his Root Canal.

Tomorrow I am going to an Orthopedic Urgent Care.  A few weeks ago my knee buckled when I got out of bed in the morning and it has been hurting ever since.  In the last five days the pain has gotten considerably worse.  I am now using a cane and a knee brace.  At PT today the Therapist worked on my knee rather than my shoulder because I was hurting so much I was at the point of tears.

I really hope the place I am going to tomorrow can do something to relieve the pain.  I will not be able to get an appointment at the Mayo Clinic for a while and I just cannot wait that long.

Today was a very busy day and I am exhausted.

Hope everyone recovered from not having CC at their fingertips all day.

More later or tomorrow.

Terri

Terri, I'm sorry to hear about the knee pain and hope the Urgent Care can give you some relief.  It's not easy to get appointments at a doctor's office sometimes.  That's why I had to wait nearly 3 weeks for my biopsy.  Glad that's done!  Anyway, get some rest.

Gerry

Thanks Gerry!  Rossi is her boyfriend whom she met while attending college in Tampa.  Both graduated last May.

@StLouisCruisersWow, that stocking is amazing!  They will love it I'm sure!

Prayers for your granddaughter that she remains safe where se decides to go...

@rafinmdSounds like you doing well!  That's great to hear!!

Stay safe everyone and heed the warnings!

Karen, so happy you enjoyed the stocking pics.  Thank you for the prayers for Morgan.  None of us wish any harm to her at all much less having to live through a Cat. 5 hurricane.

A friend on rhymes-with-spacehook told me that today is National Pierogi Day. I live in the pierogi belt but don't have any.

It sure is National Pierogi Day.  If we'd had a normal morning I might have mentioned that.  Let's hope tomorrow is uneventful.

Any ideas?

Debbie, I wish she was further away from Tampa too.  In fact I wish she was lounging here at my home right about now.  Rossi too.  And any other evacuee friends she brought with her.  When I hear news I'll let everyone know.  Thanks for the compliments on Chris's stocking.  He's such a good guy and I love the fact he wanted a religious theme.

According to AccuWeather, as of 5pm Milton is back to a Cat 5. @StLouisCruisers, praying that Morgan and her bf stay safe. Material stuff is just that but their lives matter more. @St Pete Cruiserstay safe .

I see on the Port Tampa webcam it’s raining now.🙏🤞

We'll all be on tenterhooks until this is over.  I pray it's not as deadly as Helene was.  Two catastrophes in two weeks.

Prayers that Morgan  will be safe.

And Sandi you did an amazing job with the stocking.  As a fellow counted cross stitch lover, I know how much work you put into this.  Great job!  (makes me want to get out a project now).

Lenda thank you for trying to reach Elizabeth.  I hope we hear from her soon and that she's alright.

And as always thank you for relaying Roy's @rafinmd latest progress.  Roy it sounds like you're doing great!!

Please tell your daughter happy birthday from us and enjoy the dinner!

Carolyn, I'm honored by a fellow cross stitcher's opinions.  You should get out a project!  I was beginning some long delayed backstitching on a beautiful Christmas Sled stocking, but determined late today I should put it aside and get to work on another long delayed project, the Shutterfly photo book of our 70 days at sea this summer.  I'm getting out of practice.  (The real reason I put the stocking away is it's time to get out the dreaded gold metallic thread which is liberally applied to the sled and on a huge red bow.  Oh dear...)

Karen, same comment as above to Carolyn.  You understand the sweat involved in one of these projects.

Yes, I have photos of all the stockings I've made.  I have 3 more finished up to the point of adding names, and put aside for future great grands.  Then there's the Christmas sled one I'm doing backstitching on.  Plus I have a couple more kits to work on in the future.  I hope I can physically continue this work for years to come.

Sue/WDW1972

Sue I'm glad you like the stocking.  I hope you stay safe at work in Gainesville, and your home in Ft. Myers holds onto that lucky streak of yours.

I totally understand delaying the backstitching and especially working with the dreaded gold metallic thread!!  I've used it on some of my projects too (usually Christmas ones) and it's my least favorite part even if it does look pretty.  And I will definitely be getting started on something this fall/winter...now that gardening is winding down!

@Quartzsite Cruiser thank you for the update from Roy, he seems to be making very good progress.    Do you use his Yahoo address when messaging with him?

@bennybear  thank you for sharing  your  photos of the Aurora.  There was one here in the south last evening but missed seeing it.

As for the car rental:  I've checked all my email folders and there is nothing there.  I also checked my credit card records and there is nothing there.  I must have dreamt that I reserved a car in Hilo.  I may call the places at the airport tomorrow and find out if I have a reservation or not.  If I got an email confirmation, it would be there.  I rarely delete an email.

@Quartzsite Cruiser Lenda, thank you for the update on Roy.  That is very positive news and I'm sure that Roy is much happier than he was a week or so ago.

I would try searching my email account, like at the top of the yahoo mail page is a search box where I would put the name of likely car rental companies I'd use and perhaps add Hilo to it. Avis, Budget, Thrifty, etc.  If anything comes up just check each one to see if that is the one.  The dates on the emails would help narrow it down too.  Like a date after I booked the cruise in question.  Good luck!  It would drive me nuts trying to figure it out.
