No Dress Code in MDR anymore?

We are currently in Solstice in Alaska cruise.

This evening, a sea day, we have seen people in tee shirts and shorts in the MDR. Not the first day either. Even though the rules state this isn’t allowed , it seems you can actually wear anything you like. Is this the way it is on all Celebrity Cruises currently?

I thought Celebrity was relatively refined, but it seems it is in decline with slipping standards.

We had done Aquaclass last couple of cruises, and hadn’t seen this type if dressing there.. Is ignoring the rules a MDR thing?

We have seen differences of dress code over recent cruises (from Southampton more formal, Mediterranean mid dress and Caribbean more relaxed). However we have overall seen compliance with the dress code.

We were aware a few cruises ago that several passengers had boarded minus luggage and didn’t receive until the third port of call. Could be there are a few guests on your cruise in this predicament.

On Constellation cruise April-May, I saw one gentleman politely turned away from dinner in MDR because he was wearing shorts. What you observed is not the way it is across the fleet. I have no idea why the rules were not followed on your cruise, but chemmo has offered one possibility.

Have you discussed your concerns with the maitre 'd? What did they say if you did?

We were on the Infinity in the Med in May and were in line when the MDR desk hostess told a man very politely, that he could not enter the MDR in his shorts. He turned around loudly proclaiming to his friends making fun of her and then walked straight through into the MDR. His shorts were very definitely old, well worn and he'd obviously been in them all day and no he had not just returned from a shore excursion. Many people in line felt sorry for the desk hostess who was near tears, and apologised for his bad behaviour.

It's not that Celebrity aren't trying to enforce their dress codes. It's the behaviour of passengers who can't or won't stick to the easy to accommodate dress codes.

Occasionally it occurs and you don't usually don't know the reason.   Did they get their luggage, did you have a later night in port where dinner hours might be a little skewed.  This is not Celebrity policy and never has been.  I'm sure there were people denied entry because of their dress, you just didn't see them.  To open two old threads and create a new thread on this subject is just unnecessary.  We were on Solstice to Alaska a couple of years ago and other cruises since and the dress code was definitely enforced.

In that instance the Maitre 'd should have assumed the waiters role at their table. Taken order from everyone sat there whilst completely blanking the obnoxious passenger. When he inevitable spoke up, he should have been told that a colleague had already advised him about the dress policy and so will not be served in the MDR, but he will be welcome to dine in the buffet or order room service.

Almost all pax would have been on the side of the X staff members.

Sadly, it appears there are always a few who ignore or flout the dress code.  Some consider the dress code to be a "suggestion."  Some consider it their "right" to wear whatever they want on their vacation.  All sorts of reasons.

The MDR staff has two choices -- confront the passenger or let it go.  IMHO, it often comes down to which they think will cause less controversy with the passengers overall.

If the offender is particularly loud and obnoxious, the staff may decide that making a scene will be more annoying for everyone else trying to enjoy dinner -- i.e., lots of shouting and potentially having to escort someone out of the MDR. While I recognize that most people would at some level appreciate the final outcome, they may not enjoy having the drama during their meal.  Thus, the staff may decide that the better option is simply to let it go.

I'm not trying to excuse either the offender or the staff -- just saying that I can understand why sometimes the MDR staff chooses not to act.

Lumberjack shirts seemed to be en vogue every night....

What is wrong with a plaid shirt, since that is really what a lumberjack shirt is, and plaid shirts are very much in style.

I've read several times that Celebrity employees are afraid of getting a complaint or a negative rating on the survey from a disgruntled passenger, even if the passenger is in the wrong. Their livelihood depends on good reviews. If this is the case, it's too bad that there can't be a way to "flag" a difficult passenger so it doesn't effect the job security of crew who are just trying to do their jobs. The rest of the passengers would be very happy!

I asked the celebrity person in front of the mdr about the guy in shorts and baseball cap and she said they were not allowed to stop passengers. I did see them question dress code in luminae.

If they are going to stop the guy in shorts, they also need to stop the people in flip flops.

As with anything in a large organization, there is going to be inconsistency.  If you see an employee not enforcing the published rules, you are always free to run your complaint up the ladder.

I only sailed one line where dress code was 100% enforced. It was Cunard.

It is not pleasant to see people in shorts in MDR, but I understand it is not easy for crew to not let pax in.

Correct and Celebrity is known in many areas for being consistently inconsistent.

Cynbar - You have astutely noted one of the serious weaknesses of the current corporate obsession with metrics:  the necessity to have good reviews, irrespective of the context of those reviews.  In our Yelp society, people can post negative reviews of services or people providing services without having to reveal anything about the posters' behavior.

The only thing that we other pax can do when we see things occur that might put a crew member in danger of receiving a totally-undeserved online slam from some jerk is to go to that crew member's supervisor (or hotel manager) and point out the facts of the encounter.   We have done so both with crew members on cruise ships and on airlines.

There are flip flops that are meant for the beach or the shower, and then there are those that are sandals without a back strap. I hate that they all get lumped together. I have a wide variety of the latter and it’s all I wear in the summer. Stop looking at people’s feet and the problem will vanish!

If people would abide by the rules, the problem would never even happened.
