Search for the Nations - Terrible Prize!

Just off Adventure of the Seas.  We made friends with a 13 year old boy from Long Island who was doing the scavenger hunt seeking the names of crew members from all the nations.  He literally worked day and night and spent hours tracking down the guy in the Windjammer from Belarus (who wasn't even on the list).  This was the highlight of his cruise.

 

The last day came and the results were in.  Five teams did great, all exceeding the maximum points.  They had all committed to the game.  Yes, Stevie won!  So what were the consolation prizes for the four runners up?  Nothing! Nada! Nil!  They all had spent hours doing this and RCCL stiffed all of them.

 

Now it was Stevie's time.  Yes, he won... easily!  His prize???

 

A bingo t-shirt.  You have to be kidding!  We had won this same challenge on a previous cruise and got a package including backpack, hat, tumbler, etc..

 

All Stevie got was a bingo t-shirt. 

 

C'mon RCCL... you can do better... much better!

That's for trivia.  This was something that involved much more time and effort!

I've noticed some ships have great prizes and others not so much.  I think it's often merchandise from the logo shop that they couldn't sell, LOL.

Understand that the corporation cares little for your excellence and is laughing all the way to the quarterly profit statements!

 

Yes, that's cynical but I care for kids who seek to be their best and deserve a better reward!  C'mon, this was a 13 year old.  Give me a keychain for winning trivia.  I don't care.  But don't take it out on the kids!  They are your future, RCCL.  Encourage them!

We got second place on a ten round Progressive Trivia on Serenade TA this year. 

 

No prizes. Heck the winners didnt get much.

Been the norm for over 30yrs I been Cruising on Royal.  Contests winning a Tshirt is one of the good prize's, key rings, pens and such were others. Got a Tshirt for Sexy(Man) Legs competition yrs ago. All about the Fun!...

I remember when winning  a key chain was  coveted. We still have ours.   I personally think the reward for the young man was in the hunt and the win.  Sounds like fun to me. Some rewards are not tangible.

Not everything comes with a "prize".  There is too much, "What's in it for me?" going on in the  world today, particularly in young circles, where it is the most damaging.

Well if that´s the lesson he learned, then it was a good lesson for life he learned, as that´s exactly the way it is.

 

Maybe they thought giving him the bottle of champagne wasn´t a good idea.🤣

 I´m with doones2 and Carol. You said the hunt was the highlight of his cruise. Why was it the highlight of his cruise? Because he had fun all cruise Long doing it or because he was Looking for a big Prize at the end?

 

More important was the Boy smashed and disappointed About Winning the Bingo Shirt, or was that your Impression  of the Situation. In other words - was he still happy at the end and was it still the highlight of his cruise, or was he just frustrated not being rewarded enough for all the effort he put into this? 

 

The journey is the reward!

Think a child would be pleased with a certificate proclaiming him the winner and a small trophy. They don't cost much, our children's football teams gave out several at end of season awards. Nice for the kids to display at home rather than a gift which will just, be thrown into a drawer

this kid gained a heckuva lot more than a tee shirt.    that scavenger hunt was more educational  than any trip to Disney's epcot.( yes, parents like to  justify taking their kids out of school to go to Mouse Town by classifying Epcot as 'educational' yet they actually never  take the time to  converse with the Cast Members about their home countries or pay attention to the shows/static displays)  

 

he met and conversed with people  from all over the globe.  thats far more rewarding than   any swag you think he deserved.  

 

my husband does trivia because he likes it, he likes  teaming up with people of diverse backgrounds and collaborating.  he enjoys having the mental stimulation and a tasty malt beverage among new friends.  he doesn't need nor want any more tiny pieces of junk  to prove he knows that 'Thin Lizzie' sang the 'Boys are Back in Town'

We took our family (kids and grandkids) on Oasis a few years ago. My 12 year old (similar age) grandson spent many hours in the teen club making friends and enjoying the activities.  He did the flow rider constantly throughout the cruise and got better and better.  He did the zip line, we rode the carousel (ok probably not that thrilling, but fun), he enjoyed the beach at Labadee and we river rafted in Falmouth.   Attended some wonderful shows, had a great dining experience, even trying escargot.  So, am I to understand that on a wonderful cruise on a beautiful ship with all the activities available and fun port stops, etc. that a 13 year old boy is "upset" that he got a crappy prize for a game on board?  

"Lesson learned?" Cruise for the ship, the activities, the port stops, the friends you make, the shows you see, the dining experience,  and yes, the interest and enjoyment of meeting people from around the world, not the "prize" for a game.  No offense intended.  Just my feelings.

He can wear a shirt, my kids have SO many trophies and medals (for winning, participation trophies get tossed early on). I’ll take shirts over trophies, at some dance competitions kids got to choose between a trophy or $5 gift card, guess which one was more popular.

I value all my kids awards,  think they get a kick out of seeing them displayed in the house, even though they are adults now. But each to their own

Heck I got a Bingo Shirt on a Free Spin To Win in the Casino, baseball hat for winning the Quest etc. I feel bad for Stevie. I'm not sure why they could not have given Stevie something better. I mean if the game was an entire cruise game then the Grand Prize should have been one free dinner at a specialty restaurant.

Back in 2003 we were on the Empress.  

 

There was a special needs group on board of Down's Syndrome children and teens.

 

One of the teens entered the sexy legs contest and he won. I admit my sister was a judge and she threw the contest to him.

 

All he got was a medal.

 

It made his day and the rest of the cruise he always had that medal on and a big grin on his face.

Makes me a little sad, a cruise is an experience that many can only dream of, yet we aren't satisfied. Good to hear the young man enjoyed the opportunity.

Those are the magic words, Yogimax.  Our entire small family have strong work ethics.  We don't put in extra time and effort for money:  we do it for self-satisfaction and to feel productive.  We all (and that's just the 4 of us) at different times in our lives had non-work interests that were/are unpaid.

 

Mr. Pcur is a metal technology enthusiast: made his own can-crusher, "Franken-vac" for the shop, rolling horizontal hedge trimmer. #1 son was all about baseball, basketball, and soccer.  #2 son is a woodworker extraordinaire; as in making his own kitchen cabinets, furniture, and gifts for everyone.  I love to get creative and alter my own clothes.

 

Many people have special interests, and don't pursue them for the prize, but for the personal enjoyment and sense of accomplishment.
