Mask or No Mask

Several months ago, I made a comment on Cruise Critic that I wouldn’t go on a cruise if masks were required. Back then, I wasn’t wearing a mask at all and would avoid establishments that required one. Now that masks are required in my county and I’ve actually been wearing one each day, it’s not as bothersome anymore.

Crazy as it sounds, I now think I wouldn’t mind having to wear a mask on a cruise and it wouldn’t be a deterrent.

The original link didn’t work as it was a video posted on Facepalm,

by a passenger on MSC , showing dancing pax and crew on deck

all wearing masks.
It still looked like a lot of fun-

i’m waiting for some U-tube videos to come out

Personally, I thought I wouldn’t cruise if masks were required

but, after seeing all the fun, I’ve changed my mind

The worst part about wearing a mask is not seeing peoples smiles and facial expressions. imo

How will you be able to tell who really is having fun without seeing smiles? With masks on they all look  miserable...😷

If I have to wear a mask at limited amound of places, like only during boarding, in corridors, lifts, or maybe even in the theater, then yes, I would take the cruise, no problem. If I have to wear the mask like all the time, except for dinner, then no thank you, I'll wait a little longer. Currently the idea of only being allowed to leave the ship with an excursion bothers me more, than the idea of having to wear a mask every now and then.

This is exactly how I feel now. Over the last few months I have been wearing a mask every where I go including when we have gone to Disney World for the day. It has gotten to the point that wearing a mask doesn’t bother me at all.

It used to make me laugh when I would see drivers in a car by themselves wearing a mask. Now on multiple occasions I have done that when driving home from a store and not taking my mask off when I get in the car because I don’t think about it. I figure if wearing a mask in the Florida heat doesn’t bother me, wearing one on a ship isn’t going to bother me either.

You still don't see that all that does is make the problem we have in this country worse when you dump a bunch of Covid positive people back in the US to get on planes to go back to there homes to spread the disease to everyone in there town.  We can't do mask less or any cruising until there is some sort of end in sight on this virus.  🤦‍♂️

I am still a big NO.  I avoid places here that require masks as much as possible.  Our mayor tried to mandate masks but the city council overturned her, the county commissioners refused to take the matter up.  Therefore, only the national stores require masks.  I buy my non-food items online and go to the small grocery store for food.  The grocery store requires masks but it is small and I can get done quickly.  The instant I step outside the mask is off and stuffed back in my purse.    I would not pay money to go somewhere and have to wear a mask.  We are close to a casino and I would like to go but not until I don't have to wear a mask.

Zero!

I agree.....I would not cruise if you have to worry about "social distancing and wearing  a mask"  that would not be a vacation for me - it would be more aggravation for the money paid.   I will wait till this virus is sorted out and we can cruise normally again.  Hopefully that is sooner than later.

There are alternate options available if you have a concern with flying.

When did my post show anything other than my opinion that a mask wouldn’t bother me — even after Covid is no longer an issue?

Wearing a mask is a deal breaker for us. Also, if we're not allowed to leave ship unless on a ship sanctioned excursion. I just hope Carnival will give a penalty free cancellation option to those who chose not  to cruise with these rules.

Believe me — the employees everywhere are happy they no longer have to put on the fake smile for many of their interactions.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 You are so right. I work as a retail manager and it’s like freedom to not have to fake smile at at rude customers all day.

Like many others, I am part of the "no mask crew". However when we went to the Dominican Republic last month I knew I had to have one to fly. If I didn't have one, I couldn't fly. So I went and found me a mask for our 4 out flight. I bit the bullet because I wanted my vacation to happen. As soon as I debarked the plane it came off, and stayed in my luggage until I got back on the plane to come home. If I had to wear a mask at embarkation and in the terminal to cruise, I absolutely would because I want my cruise to happen. I would bite the bullet again for an hour or however long it would take me from the terminal to being on the ship. I however wouldn't cruise if I had to wear one on the ship, I'd wait it out until those rules changed. I definitely will never in my life get a Covid vaccine so if that's some mandate they come up with, then my cruising days would be over. I'd be sad but I could still fly to the Caribbean.

You are assuming that this "masked cruise" would happen if covid is still an issue.  I'm assuming it's like carrying a bottle of zicam with you, or seasick pills....just to be extra cautious.

I have a different perspective: for us, the worst part of wearing a mask means we are in a risky environment where virus transmission is potentially higher than other situations.  We choose to spend minimal time in supermarkets and drug stores, don't go to any restaurants, concerts or bars, so why would we risk exposure on a week long cruise?

I use a mask cover of gator teeth to message others to social distance.

The WHO, Pacific Region, is now recommending not wearing masks if you have CV-19.  They opine that if you are already sick, a mask could extend or increase your contagion.  I seem to recall them also recommending not imposing travel bans and that the Wuhan virus was well contained.  so take that advice with a grain of Chinese Himalayan salt.

What studies are finding, but are either small studies and some not replicable, is that it's not masks but the type of mask that prevents  the spread.  Your N-95s and face shields work. These masks work to lessen spread if you are near someone sneezing and coughing.  But gaiters, scarves, masks from cotton fabric, thin masks, etc. do not.  Masks may be preventative if you are within 2 meters (6ft) of a person sneezing and coughing.  Or in a crowd of unknowns where social distance isn't viable.  But they really don't do anything if no one is around or the bubble group you are in doesn't have CV-19.

On a  cruise ship, one must assume there is a risk of contagion in a crowd of unknowns.  Wearing a mask made of material shown to be effective in reducing the spread or contact becomes imperative as long as a risk of infection is potentially present..
