Mask or No Mask

The CDC says that close contact with an infected person longer than 15 minutes may lead to a passing of the germs with or without masks on. They  further note that because the public does not know how to properly use PPE, the CDC is not certain that the PPE will protect them.  Given so many questions about mask working and the close proximity people will be in on a ship (even with distancing),  can one feel safe getting on a ship?

It's about time they finally got around to the science of it.

Take a look at the countries whose citizens have been wearing mask as a integral part of their societies. Those countries have initiated a "common law" that makes it mandatory to wear them from birth to adulthood. The reasons vary from dense smog to avoiding pandemics. Do you think all of their citizens are unhappy?

Historically we have had such a "protected and it couldn't possibly happen here" attitude in this country. It's actually refreshing and real to see my USA bothers and sisters finally finding their "inner humbleness" as it relates to eradicating this outbreak.

I respect all viewpoints re: wearing a mask vs. not on a cruise. To each his own.  For us, if we are required to mask up once cruising resumes, so be it.  We currently wear masks doing things we don't love so much:  working at the office, grocery shopping, etc.  We've become used to it.  It hasn't stopped us from living our lives - life is just too short.  If we need to wear a mask while doing something we are SO VERY PASSIONATE about, so be it.  When do we sail??  I can't imagine why anyone would be so surprised that masks will be required for a while when cruising resumes - or for that matter angry about it.  There will be all kinds of guidelines in place, much like what we have on land now.  That's just the way it is.  We have cruises booked for Dec 2020, May 2021, Sep 2021 & Dec 2021.  I doubt the Dec 2020 cruise sails, so the best chance at a next cruise is May 2021 - and that's iffy still.  But if it does, we'll be there.  Having said all of that, I can certainly understand why someone would not want to cruise with mask requirements.  I stumbled across this video by accident a couple of days ago.  I expect all of these guidelines will be in place.  Just my opinion.  In case anyone is interested.....  and happy sailing!

I am still a big NO.  I avoid places here that require masks as much as possible.  Our mayor tried to mandate masks but the city council overturned her, the county commissioners refused to take the matter up.  Therefore, only the national stores require masks.  I buy my non-food items online and go to the small grocery store for food.  The grocery store requires masks but it is small and I can get done quickly.  The instant I step outside the mask is off and stuffed back in my purse.    I would not pay money to go somewhere and have to wear a mask.  We are close to a casino and I would like to go but not until I don't have to wear a mask.

I have a feeling that may be a very long time from now. I think wearing of masks may become as common place as it is in Japan and China.

Wouldn't be nice if Carnival offered cruises of both varieties?  (Might even have scientific value)

I personally would choose the "no mask" variety.

Is this like choosing protect or unprotected sex, LOL.

On a serious note, I think it would be irresponsible for a cruise line or airline etc to offer a choice in something related to public health!

Give people a choice and let them live with the consequences ?

Sadly we need as a society we need to put in regulations in most countries, cultures that protect the greater good of the community versus the personal freedom/individualism choice some will make.

Sadly the narrative currently is to value freedom / individualism and somehow stranger still that freedom / individualism and strength / goodness  is aligned with no mask by a minority, but vocal and visible group.

We still have hope that the majority will have courage and leadership to power thru this selfish individualism and get this country to be a little less selfish and more caring for the larger country so we can get back to recovery and get back to international respect so we can travel and cruise !

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 You are so right. I work as a retail manager and it’s like freedom to not have to fake smile at at rude customers all day.

that's interesting, I interact with customers all day long outdoors in the heat with a mask on (which I hate) but I make a concerted effort to relay happiness with my voice and eyes.  Fortunately, I don't get very many rude customers so my job is easier.  Sorry that you have that at work.

I work at a very high volume clothing retail location. It’s just a very different customer.

I respect your choice to avoid places where you have to wear masks, and appreciate your wearing one when you must.

By the time November rolls around I think I’ll be ready to wear whatever they want. They can be like “we think everyone on the ship would be safer if you wore the elephant towel animal costume” and I think I’d do it.

Same. I really don’t care. I have a cruise booked for Feb 1st and I’m crossing my fingers, toes and everything else that it sails. Going to Key West (in theory ) and not planning to get off the ship anyway. Then Cozumel where I would rather do a private tour but I don’t mind doing a ship one if it means I can cruise.

Hopefully by the time our next cruise happens, (October 2021), this will not be an issue. But if it is, so be it! In our state, mandatory wearing of masks has dropped our infection rate drastically! I personally hate wearing a mask, although I am required to wear one at work every day and going anywhere in public.

I also don't like the idea of not being able to leave the ship without a ship sponsored excursion, but if that is what is needed, it is not a deal breaker. My DW and I both believe that we will make whatever changes are needed, as long as we can CRUISE!!!!!!!!!!!

😷

I would be just fine. I am a surgical nurse, and wear them as required, but there are multiple studies, done over multiple years that show that masks do NOT protect patients from surgical site infections. They are more to protect those at the sterile field from 'splash' from bodily fluids.

I wear PPE as proscribed, because the people in my care tend to be at higher risk. But in my every day life? I don't think masks are of real benefit. As to cruising, I would not spend my vacation dollars if I was required to wear a mask.

I only wear my mask to avoid any problems when I go to the store.

exactly my thought as well.  i am ready to book a destination vacation if not.  i hope they decide soon

This Journal study confirms your nurse's intuition:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4480558/

"overall there is a lack of substantial evidence to support claims that facemasks protect either patient or surgeon from infectious contamination."

Or not.

That study was  masks during surgery ("Keywords: Surgery"); might results be different from the general population during a pandemic?
