That Bundle of Bacon

I’ve had a #5 Kamado pot since 1978. Someone was importing to DFW from Japan together with Pachinko machines. Had to do a rebuild in 2007 but still going strong 🙂

Mine's actually a BGE. Almost 10 years old. Just replaced first gasket

I miss this.  And the mushroom soup.  And the Oysters Rockefeller, why did they remove them from the Chops menu?  I miss a lot of cruise fun and food.

There was a public outcry to add mac n cheese and tater tots I'm told.

Two slivers of bacon just won't do.  I'll stand there until they load up my plate with as much bacon as I want and then top it off with a couple of sausage links.  And BTW I want the crunchy bacon.

Pretend you’re in the casino.  ‘’Hit me.  Hit me again.”

and I like my bacon wiggly

BGE is ceramic, Kamado is clay so cannot run as hot, mine was about $120 back in ‘78 🙂

Have been known to put bacon 🥓 in my vanilla soft serve. 🍦 Proof? Here ya go!

Years ago Denny's Restaurant had a Bacon Week with bacon in or on just about everything. They had a Bacon Shake on the menu & it was good, believe it or not. Sweet 'n salty at the same time! So I sorta tried it on Carnival Liberty or Valor out of Galveston in 2016 or 2017. After getting the soft serve, made a "side trip" to Guy's Burger Joint for the bacon.

Doesnt Bacon make anything better

I do remember that bacon week at dennys,  when we were Kingwood. I had never had a bacon desert before

We've been on a norovirus sick ship, where staff had to serve you at the buffet.  They are used to people asking for specific pieces of bacon, and that one, and then that one over there, and that crunchy one on the left.....

Just be sure to be pleasant and profusely thankful.

What say you?   Anything you think  will likely be different that you will really miss on your next cruise?

I can't tell you what will be, but I can tell you what it was on one of the very last cruise before the shutdown. Our Cruise was 11nights on Serenade, March 2-13, the shutdown was March 15.

From the first day of the cruise until the very last guests in WJ were served by staff.
The staff handed out the plates, silverware and they brought the drinks to your table. I guess they didn't want everyone standing next to one another, Lots of people were practicing social distancing to a degree...
The staff was not playing it skimpy! I saw one of the dinner plate loaded with the cobbler of the day. I saw turkey and mashed piled so high it was like the food plate marathon!! lol I wasn't going out of my way to see what others where eating, but it was hard not to see a plate that looked like it was in need of a stronger tray!! 🤣

I know when I requested hash browns, I was asked about how much, crispy, soft or mid range. They were doing what they could it a weird situations... And I think they did a great job!!

To this day I still felt safer on the ship, than I did driving home! Driving home, 24 hour fast food, truck stops, restaurants, gas stations, hotel hobbies, you name it, 90% or better of them were closed down by sundown...
The next 4 weeks at home I felt like I was stuck in a Twilight Zone episode...

I wish this Twilight Zone episode only lasted 4 weeks in Michigan.  As far as I can tell, it’s still going on.  Someone please change the channel.

I know the rules aren't out yet.... and we're only  left to wonder what life on board will be like in these crazy times.... but more than the possibility of masks in the theater or no more running toward strangers to play quest, I'm thinking Windjammer as we know it has to significantly change.

I love RCI guests, but lets face it Windjammer is that one place on the ship where we see us at our worst.... oh the many people I've seen licking syrup off their fingers then going back to the buffet line grabbing spoons......   or wiping their nose and reaching for the ketchup bottle.

My wife never was a real fan, she likes breakfast on the balcony, or something light and healthy from the solarium bistro.

But I can't lie, one of my favorite parts of a cruise is waking up in the morning and going upstairs grabbing an empty plate and going for That Bundle of Bacon!   It sits there, glistening in artery clogging oil, but it's there for the taking, as much as you want, and it's just sooo good.  I admit to putting a nice little pile on my plate, and smiling.  Knowing I'm shaving a few years off my life....

But having someone hand me two little slivers of fried goodness won't be the same.    While I'm just glad to be going, I will miss That Bundle of Bacon the most.

What say you?   Anything you think  will likely be different that you will really miss on your next cruise?

No offense, but being greedy isn't nice. I was at a hotel with my wife and went up to get some bacon. A guy in front of me took 16 pieces (I kid you not) and left me with none. To add insult to injury, he left half of them on his plate uneaten and so they went into the garbage can. If no more self serve buffet means people can't hog the food, FINE BY ME. 2-3 pieces per person is fine. If you eat that, come back for more once OTHERS have gotten some.

Maybe you should stay in better hotels and stop monitoring what people eat and don’t eat...just saying.

Our first cruise was on the Enchantment to Bermuda. I am an avid shipwatcher and wanted to photograph our arrival back into Baltimore in the early morning hours. I planned to be awake at 6am and for some reason woke at 3 or 4am by mistake. Without realizing my mistake I grabbed the camera and rushed to the top deck above windjammer to photograph the sunrise. Sadly it was pitch black on the Chesapeake but the entire front of the ship smelled like cooking bacon. I stood there in the dark, alone smelling bacon and not being able to have a single piece.

You can also toss the turkey sausage in the same can.

Different strokes. I would much prefer the turkey bacon I make at home to the tasteless oily stuff they call bacon on a cruise ship. LOL

Post your recipe, PLEASE. I assume you are making them from scratch.

The packaged turkey bacon and sausages my cardiologist makes me eat are garbage.

Disclaimer: I also posted this on another thread...thought it was appropriate.

After both getting fully vaccinated, we decided  "heck it's time to travel, we are going somewhere". We booked 2 weeks in Los Cabos and stayed at 2 different all-inclusive resorts.  Wow! how traveling has changed.

Flights and airports: The airport in San Diego was mostly empty...people had plenty of space to social distance...everyone wearing a mask.  There was only one flight out of San Diego to Los Cabos so our flight was nearly full.  Passengers all wearing masks and all happy to be traveling.  One young gal was going to have a destination wedding.

Resorts: Even before entering each resort, our temperatures were checked and our luggages sanitized.  There were hand sanitizers everywhere.  All resort employees were wearing mask and eye shields...from guest services, bartenders, cleaners, restaurant staff, and pool waiters. In our room, we were provided with a sealed safety kit containing more hand gels and masks.  Each morning at breakfast, the restaurant host would take our temperature before being seated.  And yes, all guests were asked to use the hand sanitizers before entering all the restaurants.

Once seated for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, all guests removed their mask.  I would guess that 90% of the guest wore their mask when walking around the resort but mask wasn't required around the pool area and never saw anyone wearing a mask while walking on the beach.

We were extremely curious if they would still have a buffet...nope, it's gone...not the way we used to do it.  There are shields covering all the food and others covered with saran wrap...anything you want, they'll hand it to you.  But no one touched the food.  We are sure the cruiselines will follow the same or similar policy.

There were no more menus handed to you.  Instead, you have to use your phone and scan the QR code on the table and you'll have access to the menu.  A complete set of silverware and napkin, sealed in a bag, are given to guests. (Menus are provided if you don't have or forget your phone.)

Both resorts provided the Covid test required to all guest returning to the U.S....swab test in the morning, results arrived via email that evening...pretty easy.  Note: Each resort only had approximately 50% capacity.

,

We had a wonderful time.  It was a nice alternative until cruising resumes.  The choices and quality of food was outstanding.  The service went above and beyond expectations.  And lastly, we are not heavy drinkers....BUT, admittedly we got a little carried away.  Mimosas and Bailey's with our coffee in the morning...then Mojitos, Margaritas, Daquiris, Pina Coladas, beer, wine...even drinks we've never heard of...Miami Vice, Dirty Monkey, Havana Lights...we discovered you can have more than just a regular Mojito...they have mango mojito, pineapple mojito, watermelon mojito, strawberry mojito, and even lychee mojitos. 😇

The only time turkey and Bacon should be used in the same sentence is when you are wrapping your turkey in bacon

Hopefully this will cut down on food waste.  May lead to lower prices!

Given that cruise lines spend and average of $12 - $15 per person per day on food even a 25% reduction in food costs isn't going to save you anything on your cruise fare.

Some of us live to eat. Two or three strips of bacon will never happen for me. That’s not to say I am greedy or selfish. I would never  take all the bacon, on a cruise they know that people will eat more and they won’t run out. If anyone disapproves, they are perfectly entitled but to me it is none of their business.

We were on Allure TA March 1-13

No real accomodations that I could recall.

They even let us off in Malaga, Spain on March 11😱
