Good morning from central Texas.  I'm going to try to get outside and mow the yard before it gets too hot.  I will also celebrate the rain in Quartzsite the last couple of days.

 

Will celebrate all the days.  Fried catfish is big in Texas, but I like it better grilled.  When I was in college one of the Italian restaurants had a food truck that came to the dorm on Sunday nights when the dining room was closed.  It had good pizza.

 

Today's quote is very true.

 

Our thoughts are with the victims and their families in Surfside.

 

I'll pass on the drink and wine , though I used to drink the wine a lot.

And, good news, DS gets his second jab today - woo hoo!  Another step closer to us being able to hug him, his wife, and those darling little grandsons!

Roy, in the past, I got Bells Palsey two days after the flu shot. I’m hopeful the window has passed. The CAT today was ordered by the neurologist from the hospital. Actually, we’re hoping he can stay in rehab as long as possible because so long as Medicare agrees, every day is bringing improvements. We might even consider a subacute closer to us.

Good morning all!

I've always loved log cabins and have stayed in some nice, cozy ones on road trips.  @St. Louis Salhow awful that yours burnt -- and from arson!  I'm guessing they never caught whoever did it?  That would break my heart. 

 

Will pass on the catfish and (sweet) wine.  The meal sounds interesting, but tonight we'll be having the rest of the lemon garlic salmon from last night.  The quote is so true as proven by @ger_77's photo!

 

I'm preparing myself mentally for the heatwave coming our way.  The forecast just gets hotter and hotter.  From 83 F today to 105 F on Monday 😞  DH checked around, and all the hardware stores have sold all their portable A/C units.  So we have one on order from Costco, but it won't arrive until after this heatwave.  Oh well, we'll be ready for the next one.  This is so early in the summer to be hot here, I'm worried about the rest of the summer plus the fires that will come with it.

I remember the 'Harry's Cafe de Wheels' ~ a moveable food van in Sydney, AU and their meat pies and mushy peas.😊

Our Noordam cruise next year will stop for a full day in Hakodate on April 22. 

The wine for the day is sold at Costco and is very inexpensive.

When I hear Log Cabin Day, my first thought is Lincoln.

Good morning, all! I love catfish to eat, but they are nasty to handle when you catch them! A good food truck is worth its weight in gold! 
Todays port, Hakodate, is one I’ve been to. I loved our day there. Too bad the pictures are buried on a hard drive somewhere. The ship was met by scores of kindergarten age children, in coloured costumes, putting on a dance. Watching them organizing the little ones into their groups was as entertaining as the dance. There is a shuttle into a very nice area where old red brick warehouses have been converted into shops and restaurants. During our wanders, DH and I came across a small local festival with food booths. We had lunch there. Then we came across a rummage sale raising funds for a Rotary Club charity campaign. I bought a large pottery bottle/ jug that turned out to be a sake jug fired locally in a tunnel kiln. When I bought it, the volunteer I was talking to thanked me, and then all the volunteers gathered around me and applauded. It was quite an adventure!  I bought it, and DH carried it around town and back to the Westerdam for me. A fair division of labour, I think. 

We are heading out soon to,drop off some goodies for DD at her quarantine hotel. Then we are carrying on to the ferry to Salt Spring until we come to scoop her up again. The forecast is just too hot to stay here, and the forest fire smoke has moved in as well. Time to go!

Not overly fond of catfish – except as an excuse to fly. Back home in Texas our gang would be hanging around the airport, chatting, working on our planes, whatever. Around lunchtime someone might say, “Anyone up for catfish”? And we’d all run to our hangars and pull our planes out. Why would we do that instead of just getting in our cars and driving to a restaurant that serves catfish? Because there is McGehee’s Catfish Restaurant up in the tiny town of Marietta, Oklahoma. McGehee’s had its own dirt airstrip (don’t know if the airstrip is there any more) so you could land, park your plane there, and go into the restaurant. Pilots will use ANY excuse to fly.  It is known as "going out for the $100 hamburger".

Never been to Japan or eaten or drank anything on today's menu.

There are some nice log cabins in the English Lake District.

This morning I dropped Pauline and her best friend off at a retail park at 10am to catch up and of course they had their usual shopping spree.

I called at the bank and stopped at the beach car park to phone several customers.

I have just picked Pauline up from the retail park and we have called for ice creams.

I hope everyone has a safe and lovely day.

Good morning, Dailyites and TGIF!  😊

 

First off, a question for @bennybear.  You have posted the most amazing pictures from Japan, and have said how much you enjoyed traveling there.  Maybe I missed this somewhere, but, roughly, what was your cruise?  Or maybe you were there more than once?  They change the route up a bit each year, but they don't vary too much.  Some seem to cover north more, some south.  I ask because we had booked 28 days, but still seems like we would have missed some key places.  Still looking forward to Japan travel someday!   ⛩️  🥢  🦀

 

Here closer to home, we took DGD to SeaWorld yesterday.  It was packed!  People are definitely out and about.  Probably like us, doing a few things before a new wave hits.  It was a beautiful day.

 

The chicken dinner for today looks really good.  😋

 

As others have mentioned, there are some very sad stories in the news right now.  Our thoughts and prayers are with those in difficulty.  Hugs and cheers to those with cause to celebrate.  🌻

I have a friend who was a flight instructor several years ago.  He called his wife and told her he would be a little late getting home....that the "plane broke"....

A beautiful morning here in the Pacific Northwest.  They expect three days of temps over 100 this weekend, which will set some records for the area.  Fortunately we have a heat pump both in our primary house and our log house.  Not sure why they are called cabins.  Ours was built by an uncle in 1931 and is in Keyport, WA.

Our cool down has started, and I hope it continues and brings the promised rain. High today forecast for today  around 80... and tomorrow in the mid-70's. We shall see. The little Bandit dog was really prancing on his morning walk! I must plan to go further the next few days.

 

When I was doing field work (archaeology) in Carlsbad, NM one of the local eateries had a catfish fry night. My field crew loved it... I was a bit less of a fan. As to food trucks... the 11th Street Station in Durango is food truck collection with outdoor seating. I do eat there fairly regularly.

 

Like all, I am terribly saddened by the condo collapse in Florida.... what a terrible thing. And for the finding of more unmarked graves at the school in Canada although I suspect that was expected. The "good old days" were pretty awful for some people.

 

Back to sorting and cleaning the house and I plan to wage warfare on the weeds in an area where I plan a rock garden (which will probably be more rock than garden). Take care all.

Another very nice Port today !  We had the pleasure to get to Hakodate while on the Transition Cruise on the Volendam on Oct 11th , 2017  , the weather was a little bit windy and the day started of with some rain but we had a wonderful tour with 8 of us in a “ Smile Jumbo Taxi “ with our driver /guide Hideo .

 

Like I said the day started quite rainy and windy but our driver had umbrellas for each of us on board , notice the white gloves that Hideo wore all day and he had nice clean and ironed white head covers on our seats in the taxi .

 

 

 

 

 

We first went up the mountain near Hakodate to the National park to have a great view over the city and walked over to the Gokoku Shrine where some special ceremonies were going on . 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

From there we drove to the very top on the mountain to the Ropeway 

Sorry not as nice a view as on the picture I noticed earlier today ..........

 

 

 

 

We watched a very nice film at the theatre there about the history of the city , had a snack and most of the ladies because of all the rain had to go and deal with the special WC for which you really needed a drivers licence  and Japanese sign language ……….. but they were impeccably clean 

 

 

We than left to have a walk though the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse with all kind of small specialty stores 

 

 

 

 

Even upside down you can see the beautiful swords ........lol 

 

After a nice little lunch , with some nice Ramen Soup in a small port we than drove to the Hakodate Magistrate’ s Office the “ Bugyosho “ in the Goryokaku Park , we toured that building and learned about the  special construction of it . 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

After the Bugyosho we went to visit the gardens of the  Catholic

Trappistine  Monasteries a Convent founded by 8 French nuns , most of the buildings were reconstructed in 1927 .

 

 

 

 

 

After visiting a couple more small parks and the Old British Consulate it was time to get back to the Volendam 

 

Despite it raining for most of the day and very few people able to speak English we all had a fantastic day , and hardly noticed the rain anymore after a while

Interesting days. I like log cabins. A no to catfish for me (or most any fish). I've never eaten from a food truck; I haven't run across any near me.

I like the meal but I don't have a grill. Not a fan of sweet wines. I'll pass on the drink too.

I had a bit of disappointment as when I told my BFF the date of my eye surgery, he had a CT scan scheduled for that day. I has one other possibility for someone to take me, but he got his scan date changed this morning. Great friend! I'm still trying to get an appointment with my PCP for clearance.

So sad about the Florida condo collapse. I can't imagine what the families are going through. And the first responders who are risking their lives looking for survivors. I also hadn't heard of another mass grave found in Canada; awful.
