The (not my) call for Celeb to go Adults only - is it even practical?

And as one piece of maketing data: 

I’m a Celebrity-focused cruiser and use the Line because it meets my current needs. I’ve cruised other Lines for a specific itinerary or to join friends. 

If Celebrity offered adult-only itineraries, I would consider it only IF it was an itinerary I really wanted, the price was the same/very very close to a standard itinerary.

It would Not be a product Id have any real interest in, in reality. Not even a “gee, lets try that out”. Just not something I’m interested in as a specific product.

 

But I also dont go on Carnival, Disney or on the huge RCL ships because i did find the focus on kids to detract from my cruising interest. But Celebrity experience isn’t that. And I realize I’ll get posts telling me how ‘wonderful’ those ships are and I’m all wrong. I’m not……For Me.

Families should have upscale options..not just the Mouse!

 

If anyone wants fewer kids or almost  kid free on X,  avoid  booking holidays and school vacation dates.  Most kiddos on X are nicely behaved, well supervised and properly dressed.  All others need not apply!

2.  Celebrity would need to significantly increase their price point.

3. Celebrity would need to eliminate a lot of overhead and staff.

4.  Celebrity would need to fire all the Executives and Board if they every made such an idiotic decision,  (after it fails).  
 

Do not think anyone needs to be concerned about it  being seriously considered.

No, when I call my TA I don’t say book Celebrity. We have a discussion about when and possible itineraries. I say don’t bother checking Carnival or NCL. She may come back with options on multiple cruise lines. I mention to check Oceania and any other small ship lines. I ask if she has any good deals on any cruise line on any possible time or itinerary.

We once did a Celebrity cruise from Bayonne to Bermuda in August…600 kiddos! Usually we rarely notice kids. We’ve enjoyed many multi generational trips on Celebrity starting when our youngest was six. He loved wearing a tux on formal nights and eating escargot. I think those kind of trips grow future cruisers. Nothing would be gained by going Adults only. But beware of summer cruises, especially any that are departing from big population centers, where air fare can be eliminated for families. We still had a great time on that Bermuda cruise but we never even used the buffet for example.

I am sure it isn't. There was a similar thread on the Carnival forum where someone claimed Carnival was considering it because someone had asked John Heald about turning the transferred Costa ships into adult only and he didn't say they would not consider it. In other words like a lot of cruise personel  you ask onboard about changes you would like he played along. They like to please everyone so they don't want to tell passengers no that won't happen.

 

I am skeptical as to why OP starts a thread and presents Celebrity going adults only  as something that someone else thought up and is calling for not themselves. What is the point of that? I can imagine someone asking  the Captain at a cruise Q and A onboard about adults only and the Captain played nice. I have heard the crew handle a lot of left field questions onboard and they often say something that sounds like what they think the person who asked the question wants to hear.

I think we were on the same sailing!  And in the buffet small kids having tantrums. It  is typical of those Bermuda sailings in August that they have a lot of kids and I can't imagine Celebrity going adults only would go over well with their loyal northeast US customers who drive to Bayonne. In contrast in 2019 cruised to Bermuda on Oceania and there were 5 kids onboard.  So we have choices if we want to avoid kids even in the summer. I probably won't go back to cruising Celebrity to Bermuda and will cruise on Oceania or the like but not because of the kids.

I don’t think question is how to operationally eliminate children. If that’s the goal, it’s done easily enough as some other lines demonstrate. As a long-time childless DCL cruiser, I would say the trick is to design the ships with adults-only areas and kids-only areas where the two never need cross. Disney has mixed results on this with the Fantasy and Dream, but we found it fairly easy to avoid crowds of kids and kid activities on the Magic and Wonder.

 

Nothing’s going to stop a rude child from annoying an adult. Then again, nothing’s going to stop a rude adult from annoying an adult, either. Out in the wild, I meet more of the latter than the former.

 

I wouldn’t mind an adults only cruise, but I will generally choose those lines for the itinerary rather than experience. I chose HAL for 2 weeks Midnight Sun over Viking because it was cheaper, though my heart would have been with Viking. I know HAL isn’t adults-only but I’m not expecting many kids on our cruise.

 

I just want to know that a ship’s atmosphere isn’t going to be uptight. Having multiple generations around enriches my own experience of the cruise.

I would be happy if X just Stopped allowing kids under 12 in the Specialty   Dinning venues.

 Nothing like paying $100 Extra for an upscale dining Experience only to have the place turned into a McDonalds play land by kids who's parents are good at Ignoring their kids behavior.

 This has happened to us Twice and the Staff have told us there is Nothing They can do about it.

 The second time I Demanded our money back had to go to GR and get an FCC.

My favorite specialty restaurant story was our first celebrity cruise on the year old solstice in Murano, there was only a few tables occupied, the closest table to us seemed a little strange , one would leave and come back then the other , when the entree showed up the woman picked up her entire plate and threw it at the guy, this was the best entertainment of the week.

You got a refund for dinner and still got an FCC?  I've never seen specialty dining on any ship treated like a play land.  Stretching a bit perhaps to defend getting an FCC over a specialty dinner?

Sounds like you should be sailing on adults only cruises.  I have dined in specialty dining and to say it is like a McDonalds playland is just a wee bit of a stretch

Not a stretch at all.

 There were 8 adults at a big table and they put their 6 kids at a separate table and left them to do whatever they wanted including food fights and chasing each other around screaming and yelling.

 Look I have raised my own children and know what I would think is acceptable and what is Not in a restaurant.

 When we left I ask for a return credit for our specialty dining and was told that was not possible.

 At GR I ask and was offered an FCC in the amount we paid for our dining, and I did not ask for or receive Both.

 I like sailing on RCCL's Oasis class ships as well as Celebrity and I am Not against kids.

I think it's important for most companies in any business to offer their goods and services at many price points in order to be successful and appeal to a broad base.

 

While we would love an adults only cruise similar to what Viking offers since we don't gamble and enjoy the culture options they advertise, our budget doesn't allow us to cruise as often as we would like on Viking. I think they don't even offer inside cabins.

 

Therefore, we choose Celebrity for their longer itineraries and lack of "kid friendly" attractions like flow riders and such. We also cruise Royal but choose the time of year etc., that less children would be around. Royal and X are very good at keeping kids entertained.

Royal is currently testing starlink on one of their ships (freedom?).  I believe starlink has received FAA approval for use on moving ships. Assuming it all works out and goes fleet/company wide, you may see drastic improvements in internet bandwidth/latency in the next few years.

Yup, multiple threads about this yet no word if X is interested in this.  Descent internet on ships can't come soon enough

Keep an eye out for sales.  We did Viking in a PV3 for $200/day.  Absolutely loved it.

No thanks.  We came from Viking.  My husband hates all the old people (he's 56).  And while I liked Viking, it is nice to have *well behaved* younger people on board.  Meaning not screaming at dinner. 

 

I have friends who moved to 55+ communities.  I think I would hate it.  What are they trying to do?  Get away from all the kids at the pool and the ones selling lemonade on hot days? 

 

Now, "no babies", I could get used to that.  😁
