The Fleet Report and Daily for Wednesday May 10th, 2023

Good Day Everyone,

 

I just read a report that a harbor pilot at Nagasaki, Japan, was killed when he fell from the rope ladder as he attempted to board the Diamond Princess.  He had a life jacket on, but it did not say what actually was the cause of death.  How very sad.  We have often watched the transfer from just behind the Crow's nest deck area.  Often times, the Captain will slow considerably for the transfer and then toot the horn as they turn and leave to return to their station. 

 

I am "mending" from my last cruise now that I am home, trying to keep my injured leg up.  There is so much that needs attention after being gone 6 weeks, it adds to the stress of not being able to do it right away.  The weather is perfect to be using the pool here at our condo, but I have to wait for the wound to heal completely.  Yes, where the spider bit me has yet to completely heal.  The bike and the gym are also on hold.

DH remembers Malaga better than I. He went on a hiking excursion, 5 miles with some narrow ledges and swinging bridges… not for me.

We’re still working on snags with getting new glasses after the cataract surgery. The prescription was apparently not complete enough to make progressive lenses. The glaucoma specialist docs leave it to the techs to do the refractory exams and at least this one wasn’t right. So gotta get another appt… etc. Learning that home eye pressure machines are tons cheaper from other countries but we’re probably going to order one domestically to be better assured of support if there are problems. And getting the right replacement probes. And software connections to the eye clinic. In the long run I hope money well spent!

Hang in there.  I wasn’t as ill as you when I was disembarked but I know when I got home everything was overwhelming knowing I couldn’t do it.  Just hang in and take it one step at a time.  If the bag isn’t unpacked for 2 weeks, so be it.  What counts is that you heal and take care of yourself as frustrating as it can be.

Good afternoon.  Our rain finally stopped a little while ago.  We got about 3/4 inch today.  Hopefully, it won't be raining tomorrow because I have a couple of errands to run.

Well, folks I've been trying to get back here all day, and the photo book isn't to blame.  We decided to go out for lunch and make a Sam's Club run.  Then when we got home the internet dropped again.  No computer or TV.  It was so frustrating because I couldn't work on the book or read here both of which I wanted to do.  So I picked up my Kindle and finished a book I was reading.  Then I started a new book and got to chapter 4!  It was out for 2 1/2 hours, so I have to go back and read then perhaps I can comment.  No pages at all completed today on the photo book.  Yesterday I got four finished and the day before three pages.  It's slow work.

Tana’s aide just arrived and the day will truly get underway. She tells me she feels a little better overall and wanted to try a few steps with the walker earlier. It was a three foot walk but more than she has been able to do in three weeks. We have portable oxygen to make the process less cumbersome. She reminded me that her last job before the pandemic was as a school nurse. 

 

Terry, great news Tana was able to walk with the walker today.  Thank her for her service to the schools and students as the school nurse.

Malaga was always a favourite port for DH and I.  (He actually got his hair cut there on the longer cruises and the barber remembered him!).  We’d been to the sights outside of Malaga when we were visiting Spain for 2 weeks so we always took advantage of our time there to soak up the ambience and enjoy special tapas.  When I return in 2024 I will happily do a tapas tour again with Laura who knows all the good spots with very different tapas 👍 

 

 

Having a hard time typing & keeping the Ipad from falling as there is a dog head in my lap LOL. Sorry Ivan - but it’s not for long 😉 Still way to cold in the morning - below freezing.  😬 What the heck is going on?  Going to try to get some serious cleaning done today inside and try to do a bit of stuff outside keeping my one arm straight/semi- straight and assess the situation.

I was in Malaga in September 2018 on the Koningsdam.  As usual if horse events were offered I did the HA shorex that took us to another small city to ride Andalusian horses and then a wonderful snack of beautiful tomatoes and bread.  

 

Thanks for your photos of your horseback riding tour in the Malaga area.  I hope you get up to the cabin next week safely and before those mosquitos hatch.  I've seen those monsters in person!

We have people coming over to give us an estimate on painting the house.  This may encourage us to get up on a ladder and do it ourselves.  Last night's t-ball game was a lot of fun.  Samson is as cute as they make them.  He is only 4.  The rules of the game are that everyone bats and everyone runs the bases.  It is fun to watch them in the outfield as they are doing everything except watching the ball - picking grass and dandelions, collecting gravel, playing in the dirt.  You know, the things 4  year old do.  Our realtor was a coach for the other team and it was nice to see him again.  

 

Yesterday afternoon we spent outdoors with the neighbors.  He is a landscaper and is doing the lawn care for us this summer - all except mowing.  Sue insists that she can do that.  They both said they were so happy when we moved in.  There is a no man's land between the properties and he was afraid to touch it because of the previous owner.  There is also a tree house that is unsafe.  We were going to take it down, but Scott said he'd have his crew do it.  I bet it will come down in the next couple of days.  Apparently he's wanted it gone for quite some time.

Thank you @kazu Jacqui for the best wishes on School Nurses Day!  When I took my first school nurse job in 2016 (after I came back to live in the States after 10 years abroad), I thought it would be a piece of cake.  Heck, I was a trauma ER nurse and hospital administrator - how hard could it be?  Boy, was I wrong!

 

One of my schools is giving me lunch and they gave me a gift basket - I forgot to take a pic.  Will do that when I go there today.  

 

Love the food!  And the recipe for making homemade tortellini!!  Going to have to try it.

 

Well, off to get ready for work - 11 more working days (taking Friday off to use up some sick time I have left).  It is getting real!!

We have been to Malaga three times. In 2016 and 2017, we were on the Prinsendam, and in 2019, the Veendam stopped there on her way to Boston.

 

On our first visit, we took the Ho-Ho with a stop at the Castle of Gibralfaro.

After our Ho-Ho tour in 2016, we walked around town.  We were there during Fashion Week, but did not see any of the shows.  Different sections of the seats were reserved for various designers, some of who's names I recognized.

 

In 2017 and 2019, there were festivals in town, along with band concerts and more informal performances.

Very sad news about that harbor pilot.  They literally take their life in their hands every time they board or disembark a ship.

View on our early morning walk today (6:25 am).  I wasn't expecting the fog but it was pretty humid out.  The 10th fairway is off in the distance and our home is to the left of the tee.  Surely you see it!  haha  😂 The day turned out hot and humid.🥵

Just out of curiosity was this the Gran View.  Ogdensberg has a special place in my heart.  I grew up in Syracuse and my parents were both born in Canada between Ogdensburg and Montreal.  Growing up, I travelled almost annually past Ogdensburg and Canada, along both sides of the river and had a ringside view of the Seaway construction.  I've stayed at the Gran View a few times and dined there quite a few.

Well, today has been nice.  Went to my school that I don't particularly like ("the inmates are running the asylum" school) and then went to my favorite school for the lunch they gave me and the health assistant.  I chose a Quinoa, Beet & Arugula salad (golden beets, avocado, goat cheese, fuji apples, pistachios & red wine vinaigrette) which was absolutely wonderful and a passion fruit black ice tea.  The teachers bought it for us.  And here is the wicker gift basket:  coffee mug, Dunkin' Donut gift card, s'mores bark candy.  Overall a nice way to end School Nurses' Day!!

You got the right place.  I’ve stayed here several times over the years when I’m visiting the local hospital.  The food at the Gran View is good and reasonably priced.  The tomato sauce on the lasagna tasted fresh, not canned.

Our temperature high today was to be 9 C. Raining, occasional feeble sun, snow forecast down to 500 metres. Supermarket this morning, surprised to see a large selection of eggs available, as there has been a shortage this year.

Went out for lunch.

@kazu  yesterday you mentioned that Ivan follows you around, the cat we adopted a year ago from the SPCA  still follows me around  (when she is not sleeping)..    Ivan loks very handsome after his grooming.

@kochleffel  Davinci and Mona Lisa will soon settle into their home with you, they are lovely cats.

Oh my, I’m just reading @Crew News live thread on Nieuw Amsterdam to Alaska and the high winds they’ve struggled through… and thinking of Annie @marshhawk 😱!  The embarkation sounded brutal, and now 70 knot winds causing listing and shutdown of the elevators!  They’ll have stories to tell!

We have been to the fabulous Hotel Vincci Aleysa on the promenade of Benalmadena 15 times and we have brought our Sarah and a friend 6 times.

This has been a pre cruise hotel a couple of times when sailing from Malaga.

We always get Sarah a garden view room which has a patio and grassed area for sunbathing and we are on the floor above which has Fantastic views of the beach and the Mediterranean sea.

Oh poor Annie and Chuck and their BFF!  I hope they aren't sick as dogs out there in those seas.  I would be taking my generic Bonine (meclizine).  Very rarely do I even think to take it but sometimes the Captain will let people know of rough weather ahead of time so we can all be prepared.  I hope Annie @marshhawk can contact us when she gets to an Alaskan port.   I wish the weather was better for her.

During one of my Alaska ferry trips, the purser announced that we would be encountering some very rough water and anyone who needed to take medication should do so right away. There was also an announcement that passengers who wanted to be in another place on the ship during the next hour should go there and stay there.
