compensation

Hi, can anybody give me some advice.  We were meant to visit Guernsey on our last cruise  and we were really looking forward to it.  Unfortunately, due to bad weather they had to cancel the visit and instead we had a day at sea. Should or would P&O compensate us for the fact we did not visit Guernsey?

Many Thanks

The only compensation you would be entitled to would be for any ship sponsored excursion that you purchased for that port of call, which would be credited to your on board account as a refundable on board credit.  You would have already received this during the cruise which would make your question moot.

You also should have received any portion of the port fees and taxes included in your total paid fare that would have been incurred by the cruise line for actually docking at the port in Guernsey, which would be a minimal amount.  This, too, would have occurred on board by way of a credit to your on board account.

If you read your cruise contract, ports of call and itineraries can be changed by the cruise line at their discretion with no liability to the passenger for compensation.  This is particularly  true in cases of changes brought on by something totally out of their control such as weather.  In essence, you are not purchasing the visits to each port of call - just the stateroom you occupy, access to the activities and venues on the ship, food, and entertainment provided during your time on board.

Sadly, ports cancelled because of weather are a fact of life. And it's quite frequent on Guernsey because it's a tender port.

Not the fault of P&O, thus not liable for compo.

Your travel insurance might cover you - check the small-print.

But send them an email and see what happens.

While I understand what you are suggesting, if the cruise line felt that missing this port of call was due to a reason that would be an exception worthy of offering compensation, they likely would have done so on board during the cruise, and would have done so for all passengers.  Very unlikely that they would consider something for an individual (or all) after the fact based on an email.

In other words, IMO, writing an email would be a waste of time - especially as this missed port was due to weather.

It might very well be a waste of time. Of course, if the OP doesn't ask via an email (that could take what -  2 minutes to write and send) it's 100% certain that no further compensation will be forthcoming.

Also, posting on CC is a waste of time but we all still do it. 😉

OK, then let me rephrase - it is highly unlikely that under these circumstances, there will be any compensation forthcoming as the result writing an email.  As mentioned, if there was any to be had, it wold have already been offered.

As long as we're all just wasting time, then on to the next thread...🙂

No different than a week at a resort hotel. If one of the days it rains so hard you can't go out and enjoy exploring the area, does the hotel give you compensation? Nope. Same applies to cruise ships when the weather doesn't cooperate.

I suggest you bother to read the contract you agreed to when you got on the ship. You were never guaranteed anything. However, you should have been reimbursed any port fees.

Except that when the weather's bad, the resort doesn't end up in Nassau ;).

If the weather conditions are such that the captain decides it is better to skip the port, do you really think you would want to spend a day there?

You should also be reimbursed for any excursions purchased thru the ship. Non-ship excursions would depend on the provider.

As agree with Paul!  When the Captain decides to skip a port,  you would not enjoyed being there.  It's a good thing, not a bad thing.

You will automatically be refunded the  cost of any excursions booked with the ship.

Try telling that to the people lining up at Guest Services at amusement parks demanding a refund because of weather.

As I posted, by stepping on the ship you agree to the passage contract for you cruise line. Here is that section from the Princess contract:

Carrier may, for any reason, without prior notice, cancel the cruise; deviate from the scheduled ports of call, route and timetable; call or omit to call at any port or place or cancel or modify any activity on or off the ship; comply with all governmental laws and orders given by governmental authorities; render assistance to preserve life and property; or change the date or time of sailing or arrival, change the port of embarkation or disembarkation, shorten the Cruise or substitute ships, aircraft or other transportation or lodging.

Contractually, the ship can push back from the dock and stay there for a week and call it a cruise.

I once had compensation for the weather. we sailed in circles for 2 days outside Shanghai because of a severe storm. Then when we docked it was at 1am to refuel. We were not allowed to leave the ship. They refunded the cost of our Chinese visas. This was P&O Aurora on a Sydney to Singapore cruise.

I have never heard of anyone on a UK cruise line getting a refund of port taxes. They are not listed on the invoice?
