Where we are is beautiful but is a dump regarding animal welfare. After a sad week where we lost 2 of "our"semiferal cats in unpleasant circumstances and culminating with me climbing a 6 ft wall and rescuing 3 new born kittens in a concrete pit.Last Sunday walking to the market this poor sod ran across the busy beach rd to us.He was covered in ticks, lice and fleas. After 2 special shampoos and frontline treatment we got him half decent.Only problem now he has energy,he is always biting and trying to hump, lol. The local rescue volunteer is inundated and cannot help.By a miracle,a lady who rescues dogs in Rome walked past our house and said she would have him.Only problem she isn't back from holiday until 4 weeks time,so we will keep him and drive to Rome 7hrs each way.We spend more on animals than we do ourselves, lol. Before and after photos.20200719_075838.thumb.jpg.fc78f05aeeca6b7cc066a2f8e08fe091.jpg20200729_155010.thumb.jpg.11ede3551f865c09b9dec54fa9a427e3.jpg

Such a darling. He looks so sad. You really are an old softie aren't you?  We'd be the same though, the only problem being, I'd want to keep them all. I can never understand how some can treat animals like that. By the way, what happened with the kittens?

What are things like where we are?  Pretty bad unfortunately,  given the news this morning that England had the highest excess death rate in the whole of Europe since Coronavirus kicked off.

No wonder we're in such a mess here, with another wave now forecast and the economy in a state of collapse.

If only our government hadn't been asleep in February and early March.

Not a cheerful soul are you? We already know how bad things are, we keep up with the daily news, and check our local covid cases  regularly. Nothing is to be gained by continually reminding everyone what we already know. It doesn't solve the problem,  it only makes it more difficult to keep your spirits up and carry on with living the best way you're able for now. Positivity is what's needed at the moment. Now back to those cute little dogs and cuddly cats.🐶🐱

Its been a strange few days for me.  Five roofers up and down the roof. They start at 7.30 am which isn't ideal for me as I often don't get to sleep until between 4 and 6 am.This morning it was 4.15!

I don't know about you but I find it a bit unsettling and don't seem to get much done when workmen are around, so its been a couple of lazy days for me.. but having said that... 5 roofers.... tea x4.. that equals tea and biscuits for 20 per day!! 😄

In the last 18 months, we’ve had our kitchen and bathroom updated, so we’ve had workmen in both times. I try to save some tasks for when workmen are in, such as sorting through old paperwork, but can’t concentrate property with all the banging and knocking

I think it’s totally normal to be discombobulated by workmen in the house.  Something about disturbing our sanctuary, I suppose.

I’ve been locked out of CC for most of the day.  Could read it, as a guest, but no member privileges like clicking to be taken to the first unread post, or indeed the ability to post.

It’s the most lovely day here.  Sorry if it’s not so nice where you are.  We walked along the river to one of our favourite pubs and though we intended only having a drink we were tempted into a light lunch there too.  Have a little dog sling/shoulder bag on order, so that little poochie can come along with us without having to walk all the way - too far for a little ‘un.  She’ll need to be a bit older and stronger to do 30 minutes each way.

Our pets are so pampered - or probably not, just properly regarded and cared for, compared with some of the poor creatures abroad, and not so far from us either.  I hate hearing French country dogs barking, knowing they are chained all day.  As for their habit of putting dogs in their car boots ... Well done Brian in Italy for looking after little Scruffball, even if he doesn’t show you any appreciation.

Did you have any trouble getting builders?  They do seem very busy at the moment - probably quite a lot of unspent holiday etc money chasing various jobs around the house and garden.

We had our bathroom done last year, and used a local firm, we had about a three month wait before they could start work.

With  the kitchen, we went to another local firm who specialise in kitchens.  We first contacted them in January, with a view to starting the works in April. It turned out they had some time available in late February to the start of March, and gave us a discount as we agreed to have the kitchen done sooner rather than later. In retrospect, it was very lucky, as all the work was done before lockdown.

it does seem busy with builders, there’s two extensions being built in my road. I think everyone has had time to think about what they want to do their houses, and, as you say, people aren’t holidaying at the moment.

Today we went a local drive around and decided to look at the view from a local view point
and found a little secret garden to have a walk around that was well tended to but not a soul
in sight .
Then we decided to have a run pass my Daughters and stopped in our car and got to see my
Granddaughter for the first time this year .So today has been a good one for us.

How lovely for you Kalos [emoji4]
I’m looking after my baby grandson for a couple of hours tomorrow for the first time, essential childcare, but he’s not been left with anyone before. It will be interesting [emoji15]

It’s an odd situation.  Some sharp contrasts between those who’ve saved money and want to spend it, and those who’ve been really hit badly.  Goodness knows what the situation’s going to be in six months time. Fingers crossed.

I’ve a feeling furniture stores etc might benefit eventually as we all realise how much we use and love our houses and how it’s nice to enjoy a bit of luxury at home

Garden stores already did well as soon as their restrictions were eased and people got their personal outdoor space up to scratch.

Anyone fancy a caption competition (no prizes but never mind)?

We watched these two for ages.  I’ve got a bit of video as they made every move together - synchronised duck-guddling! 🙃. Great way to waste time/enjoy non-pressured leisure opportunity

Ridiculously busy in flooring, both retail and commercial, but we won't know for a while if we are just playing catch up or if this is a sustainable increase.

Fingers crossed 🤞

Interesting, Andy - I hope you're picking up some of the 'lost' trade.  I suspect there's quite a lot of saved money out there looking for a home at the moment.

The quotes I've had from people for a bit of structural garden work have been a lot higher than expected, and it probably reflects the demand.

Yes

Well, I’m going to re-carpet all through.  I think I would have done it Covid or no but it’s quite difficult to arrange your thoughts and remember the mood way back then.

However I think we will now wait a few months for pup to arrive, settle in and be proven to be continent!

Looks beautiful kalos. I'm glad you had a wonderful day out and got to see your granddaughter.  You certainly had lovely weather.

Not surprised Harry, in a way I'm glad trades people are charging good rates.

I feared a race to the bottom after the uncertainty and businesses working for turnover as nobody knows what will happen.

It's not sustainable of course and by paying a realistic rate, you are contributing to saving a business, jobs and mental wellbeing, thank you...

We recently had a new kitchen blind fitted, that was ordered pre lockdown. The fitter said he was rushed off his feet. People had stopped spending money on holidays, and were upgrading their houses instead. The same comments were made by the kitchen fitters who did the final adjustments to our new kitchen.

Obviously people can only upgrade their kitchens, get new carpets etc every so often, but I do think that the current debacle over Spanish holidays will mean that many people will not be spending money on vacations, and will spend the cash on home improvements instead.

Hi sis,the lady opposite us feeds and looks after loads of cats and we get a couple that prefer our garden to hers, lol. We took the kittens to her and there was a cat that was feeding her 2 older kittens, soon as she heard the squealing she ran over and took them to her basket and adopted them.Amazing, but expect to lose at least 1 of them, mortality rate not that good here with cat flu and things.Cheers,Brian.

yeah that one

we turned up at 4pm and went out for dinner at a pub offsite which was a nice pub but the club onsite had a police riot with some travelers who refused to leave the site.

First thing the next morning I told them I was going home and wanted a refund. Didn’t feel safe on there and this was 2 years ago so kids were a lot younger about 2&3. Park resorts were really good though. Refunded me for everything. Cost us a bit in petrol and time and would never go back but lesson learnt. The site was a mess too. Rubbish everywhere and dirty caravan.  That was the worst place I’ve been

LOL,my earliest memory of a caravan was when I was 6.isle of Sheppey. All gas caravan with gas mantel lights on a farm with communal toilet and shower block. When I did venture out in the outside sea of mud there were geese taller than me running around and I was screaming my head off.The owner used to laugh and say don't worry they won't hurt him.Ironically the place was called Happy Valley Farm.

In the 60's too. I remember meeting Frank for the first time. Velvet collared finger tip jacket, drainpipes, beetle crushers,  string tie and the brylcreemed DA. 😆

It would be a disaster if I lived there.  All the strays would be in the house and we'd be relegated to the shed.😉
