Psst. Carnival. Quick tip. Pissing of the CDC is something you really want to avoid. Especially as they aren't exactly your biggest fans at the moment. I'm really hoping the CDC was aware this announcement was coming and was OK with it.
datolim Posted May 5, 2020 #52 Share Posted May 5, 2020 (edited) There are a number of issues that still need to be sorted out. First is the CDC 'no-sail' order which could be extended if full compliance is not yet implemented. CDC has said that cruise lines are the 'incubator of the virus'. CEO admits that they are venues for 'social gathering' which is the opposite of 'social distancing'. He did admit that their plan depends on how the virus situation is evolving and have to wait and see. According to him Carnival have submitted their plans for the 'hospital ships' to the CDC. But this is only one of many other demands from the CDC. The ship's clinic need to be renovated to a mini-hospital is some of the other things to be implemented. Full implementation of CDC order is something else. It would take time. It looks to me that he is floating the trial ballon here of opening with 8 ships on Aug 1. This is a fraction of the total number of ships that they have. So don't hold your breath for the cruise industry coming back from Aug !. https://www.cnbc.com/video/2020/04/14/carnival-ceo-on-the-cruise-industry-in-the-age-of-pandemics.html Edited May 5, 2020 by datolim .............

They're not getting any more of my $'s until cruising starts back up and I'm satisfied with how it is being handled. Royal already has my money for 2 cruises this year - one was cancelled by them and I should be receiving a credit back for that and then I have a November Oasis cruise booked, and who knows what will happen with that one.

Jimbo Posted May 5, 2020 #56 Share Posted May 5, 2020 (edited) Pretty sure Carnival will get their bubble burst before August 1st. That is just an irrational decision on their part at this time. Edited May 5, 2020 by Jimbo
leisuretraveler223 Posted May 5, 2020 #57 Share Posted May 5, 2020 This whole approach is pure fantasy. Without specific states having established guidelines, it's a pipe dream. Right now, there are restrictions on who can even reserve a hotel room. It's suspected many states will fo through the summer with restrictions on gatherings of more than 50 people, but they think they can get a couple thousand on a ship in port? It's just nonsensical.

I don't think anyone of us wants to experience a vacay where we are constantly reminded about social distancing, wearing a mask at the buffet, having to find out when it is ok to remove the mask at the dinner table, or being constantly enforced where and when to walk....it'll be their own undoing.
TYMAN Posted May 5, 2020 #60 Share Posted May 5, 2020 I wear a mask 14 hours a day in our hospital, I would be more than happy to wear one while wandering the ship....because I would be on a cruise!! Casino would seem to be less smokey, I wouldn't have to see the grouchy faces on folks cause they couldn't get on the first elevator, etc etc. I would take it off to eat, sleep, and most importantly, drink! Cheers! 5
The Grumpus Posted May 5, 2020 #61 Share Posted May 5, 2020 The company said any return to service would include "enhanced operational protocols and social gatherings guidelines." I'll be interested to hear about these protocols and guidelines to minimize any chance of an outbreak. One person ended up getting over 800 people infected on Diamond Princess, many of which were infected after everyone was quarantined to their staterooms. If they really do restart August 1st, it's probably going to take a few months of virus-free sailings to prove to me cruising is going to work when there is no vaccine. But if they get to sailing and within weeks there are sick passengers and quarantined ships with no ports taking them back, then this rush to restart could very well sink the entire cruise industry for a very long time. I personally think the states allowing restaurants and bars to reopen over the last week and coming days are our guinea pigs. If it works for them, and there's no "second wave" caused by the rush to reopen, then there's a chance this might work.

They can say they are resuming cruising Aug 1 or they can say they are cancelling all cruises until July 31.....Corporate PR and doublespeak at its finest. Every cruise line is cancelling cruises up to a certain date and stating they plan on resuming on the next day. Carnival is actually talking about phased openings and listing actual ports and ships that they are planning on starting back up. There was no reason for Carnival to state this unless there is an actual plan to restart.

LoisGriffin1 Posted May 5, 2020 #69 Share Posted May 5, 2020 One of the biggest factors in getting restarted is the crew being able to fly in. Right now many countries have travel bans and I believe the US has bans on certain countries too. it’s going to take some time to get full crews back and the cruise lines are going to rely on travel bans being lifted.

Lauderdale. I’m booked NR on 8/7. Cancelled the 3rd person & applied DP to cruise balance then downgraded all the way to GTY inside for the 2 of us. Was quoted a fare $200 less than current then best rate (military and variation of BOGO 60% plus a $25 flash sale). called for 3rd time and it was acknowledged as a pricing mistake they are honoring (probably hoping for any Live ones on sailing lol) so, I gave them another $43 & we called it final Payment. Not doing that dance, will take it as FCC or cancel If they extend Non operational dates Better than stranding the NR DP Edited May 5, 2020 by keishashadow
