I "Frankensteined" some creole/cajun recipes last night. Probably a mortal sin in some eyes. I combined a shrimp creole recipe with a vegetable jambalaya recipe (shrimp creolaya?). Rice, beans, raw shrimp, red, green, and yellow peppers, onion, celery, tomato, corn, garlic, creole spice mix....

It turned out rather good but might need a little tweaking (maybe more salt and spices); I'm pretty sure I will be trying it again -

Stingray sandbar near Georgetown (December 2, 2015) and a crowd of ships tendering in/out. It poured rain for part of the day - the weather was bad enough to halt tender operations for a while. Luckily, it held off until right after our stingray excursion!

Thank you Rich, Roy, and the drinks and recipe ladies for all the daily info.

Love peanut butter but not peanuts, agree that it is best in cookies.  Appreciate the Peace Corps and all it does.  15 or so years ago when we lived in the UK, we spent a week in April in Islay (Scotland) participating Walk Islay Week.  Our first walk was around a large estate with many feral pigs.  They were on the other side of the fence.  The walk was splendid with our bag lunches on the beach .  At the end, the gilly and his wife provided us with a wee tipple and scottish pancakes.

Love the port of the day idea.  Enjoying hearing about the Georgetown as we've not been there.

Prayers for those on the care list and best wishes for all.

Haven't made it as far as posting for several days.  But, I do read every day!  Sometimes, I think I don't post because my life is boring compared to others.  I got my shots so long ago that I am now past the two week interval for full protection.  On one of my Red Cross calls today I learned quite a bit about the J&J vaccine.

@cunnorlmy sincere condolences on the sudden loss of your brother.  It is always so unsettling to lose a sibling.

Thanks for the reminder about the Peace Corps.  I was in college at the time it was established, and for a time I seriously considered joining after I graduated.  Don't even remember why I changed my mind.  Obviously, such a long time ago that my memory has blanked that out!

I did the pot roast with veggies yesterday and will be enjoying leftovers for a couple of days.  I couldn't remember when was the last time I even cooked a roast.  It is always so much for just one person.

@superomabelated best wishes for you anniversary and many more years to come!

We only made it to Georgetown once, and that was on one of our earlier cruises.  Only thing I remember was that ship was supposed to dock, but because of winds, we were tendered to shore. Glad the winds weren't too horrible that day.  Again, like others, I remember how clean it was throughout the town.

March is coming in like a lamb, which always is a bad sign in Colorado!  March is our snowiest month.  I can remember more than once that we had a horrible snow storm on my birthday, the 30th.  Hope that we just get rain on this side of the mountains.  Let the ski areas have the snow.

Have a great rest of the day, everyone.

Yikes, I just viewed the video of my 14 year old grandson's game Saturday where he fractured his clavicle.  (I've also seen the x-ray).  Looking at it was hard!  The goal keeper was over 6 feet tall and had a stocky build, and when DGS approached with the ball ready to score a goal, the goalie stuck his leg out and tripped him.  No hiding it!  DGS landed on the ground on his left shoulder and lay there writhing in pain.  Within a minute or two he got up and went to sit on the sidelines with his shoulder drooping.  The game was nearly over so Mom and Dad took him to the ER.  Thank goodness!  The orthopedic specialist appointment isn't until Wednesday.  He's been playing since he was 5 years old and loves the game.  I guess the good comes with the bad...😔

Today's sunrise is the first of yet another string of cruises.  In 2014 The Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony were meeting in Singapore and I made the switch starting on Symphony in Bali and leaving Serenity in Cape Town.  I was dreading the long flight home when I discovered Amsterdam had a World Cruise segment leaving Cape Town for Ft. Lauderdale just 3 days after I arrived.  On March 1 the Symphony left Bali:

Roy - Interesting that you joined that WC in Capetown.  That was the one where Bishop Tutu came aboard for a few days.  I am guessing that you might have boarded just as he and his entourage was leaving.  We took half of the cruise; boarding in Hong Kong and leaving at Ft. Lauderdale.

Yes, he was gone when I boarded.  I did see one of his talks in rerun somewhere.

😱 OMG.  Yikes!  Sorry to hear this.  Hope the goalie was punished?

The good thing is he is young and will recover a lot faster than many of us on these boards.

Boy, I just got a scare.

When I turned on my tablet there was a message saying I needed to make a $5k payment to HAL tomorrow.

As many of you may know, google scans you emails and adds events to your google calendar (among other things). Tomorrow would have been the final payment day for the original Ryndam (now Rotterdam) premier cruise.

I still have some time before any more payments need to go to HAL!

@dfish yes - we did have a wild ride to Antarctica in 2007.  But, we went back to Antarctica on Seabourn in 2019 and had a wonderful trip. Mother Nature is unpredictable and more powerful than we are. It’s all part of the adventure.

The post about the Atlantis submarine in Grand Cayman, reminded me that we did it in 1994 on a RCCL cruise (we hadn't discovered HAL at that time).  They had an offer very few could take advantage of, but if you took the dive where they feed the fish, you could take their deep diving sub free within a month.  A week after we disembarked the RCCL ship, we were back in Grand Cayman for the week on the live aboard.

The day we left the dive boat, we did the deep dive.  We were ferried out in an inflatable to the sub, after leaving our shoes on shore.  If you ever decide to do this, be aware it helps if you know the person going with you, as your are very, very close to each other and it is hot on the sub.  There are only two passengers and the captain on each dive.

It was literally and experience of a lifetime.  The sub went down to between 850 to 1000 feet, and at those depths there is no light except the big search light on the sub.  We saw all sorts of plants and creatures that are only found at great depths, along with a lot of debris and a ship wreck, the Kirk Pride.  What I remember most, was what looked like a small white tree or plant attached to the railing of the ship wreck or something else.  The captain said it was an animal.

I'm not sure if we could get in and out of the hatch now, as it was a rather tight fit.  After all, it was almost 27 years ago.

Yes, there was a penalty kick for DGS's team.  The goalie tried standing way out in front of the net and the referee told him to back up where he should have been standing.  The Tigers kicked a great shot right into the net and scored.  It was a win for the Tigers, in fact they won all their games over the weekend.

Thanks, yes I'm sure he will end up as good as new.  Kids his age break clavicles a lot in sporting events from what I've read.  There's no padding to protect those bones.  None for old folks like us either but maybe our bones are harder!

Friends ask what's the secret of my pot roast that everyone seems to love.  It's simply that I don't use water or even broth for the liquid.  I use wine -- a Merlot or a burgundy....in about a 4:1 ratio to some water.   Makes sort of a beef bourguignon.  Although I don't use the traditional tiny onions.  And I don't even drink, but I use a lot of wine in my cooking.  And like many here have commented, I use just potatoes, onions and carrots for my root vegetables.

Oh, and portabellas.  OK, they're not root vegetables but what recipe can't be improved by the addition of fungi?

I use 2 cans of beer.  We don't drink beer, but we cook with it and have it available for Claudio's guys.

Hope he heals well and fast.  I broke my clavicle when I was just toddler... a neighbor picked me up to swing me and dropped me!!!! Just vaguely remember it..... the treatment (a cast on the upper body) was really miserable then. And the clavicle is the most commonly broken bone in the body. I know I wiggled so much when they were putting me in the cast that it pinched under one arm. I still have the scar some 80 years later. Glad medicine has gotten a lot better.

Ouch!  I guess being so young they needed to be sure it healed right.  Toddlers are so active and a sling wouldn't work at that age.  I know 2 other family members who've broken their clavicle.  One in a car accident and needed a sling for 3 or 4 weeks.  Then my SIL was mountain biking out of state with a friend and had a big spill, breaking his clavicle in two spots.  They actually drove back to Ohio for medical care.  He required surgery with a plate and pins inserted.  He's fine and eventually switched to long distance riding and not mountain biking.  🚲

Our second jab is done! So happy about this. So far my arm feels a little warm at the injection site, but not really sore at all. Hoping I’m not jinxing it by saying that.

We celebrated by stopping at Goodcents and picking up 2 of their ready to eat meals. My husband chose the pot roast and spent lunchtime picking out the vegetables and asking “what’s this one?” DH is not a fan of vegetables, root ones or otherwise except for carrots and white potatoes.

In retrospect I feel especially fortunate considering how hard to get segments are sometimes on the HAL world cruise.

Roy

I hope to have luck for 2023.  I just added my name to the waitlist for that segment....Cape Town to
Amsterdam.  Hope I make the cut.  Not picky about rooms....outside best but I would take an inside for this great itinerary. Like you, I am a solo traveller.

Yikes is right!  Not sure I'd be able to watch the video!  And it sure seems like that goalie should have been penalized more.

My 40-something nephew broke his clavicle a few years ago, he went head first over the handle bars of his mountain bike. It sounds so painful. 😞

I'm sure that was hard. It sounds like the goalie did something illegal; there should be repercussions.

Ugh, snowing here now, but just lightly.

Some Covid restrictions relaxed here today. 15% occupancy of indoor events and 20% for outdoor events. Travel restrictions lifted - no need to quarantine after interstate travel. Hopefully people won't go wild and forego social distancing.

Love the idea of a port of the day.  I've been to Grand Cayman three times, although it should have been 5 but twice it was cancelled because of weather.  The first time with my daughters we just shopped (and noted how many banks there were).  The second time my husband and I did the submarine ride.  Most recently in 2018 we were there over the Christmas holidays.  My oldest daughter and I decided to do a snorkeling and stingray excursion.  I don't snorkel, but my daughter had a blast and I did enjoy the sting rays.  This picture is one I took looking straight into that gorgeous water and it is my screen saver on my PC.

I read your account several times to know what I could be getting into.  You do know you have a pattern with your wild tender ride, right?
