Rare rafinmd Posted May 24, 2021 #26 Share Posted May 24, 2021 Today's sunrise is the last from my 2019 Nieuw Statendam-Cunard transatlantic combination. On May 24, QM2 had docked in Brooklyn by the time the sun came up: Roy
Rare TiogaCruiser Posted May 24, 2021 #27 Share Posted May 24, 2021 (edited) Good Morning All, It’s hard to believe we’re starting in on another week. Just wanted to add to Kazu’s tip. The crystals can be used to make the “cooler collars). Sew up a strip of 100% cotton, about 24” x 2”. After turning right side out and before closing the “turning hole”, add about 1 tablespoon of the crystals. Before use, soak in water for about 15 minutes. The crystals will absorb the water. Then tie around your neck like a tie or kerchief. It will keep you surprisingly cool in hot weather. These are great for hiking or riding. Quartzsite Cruiser Posted May 24, 2021 #28 Share Posted May 24, 2021 Wishing all our Canadian friends both here on the Daily and elsewhere a: HAPPY VICTORIA DAY! Good morning. Our weather hasn't changed. I lost my tiara, which I had sometime in my school days. For a while, most of the girls wore one to the dances various dance clubs held. While I like escargot, after two times eating just a small amount, I realized they do not like me. DH enjoys them and will have them on BHBs. The quote is interesting. We have been to Osaka twice, and missed the port in 2018. In 2000, it was the disembarkation port for a trans Pacific cruise. We did not see much of the city, as we were taken to hotel before our late afternoon flights, and were stuck in a banquet room. We were there for a long day in 2002 on the APEC cruise on Volendam. We covered a lot of ground that day. Early that morning, we took the train to Kyoto and spent several hours walking around and touring one of the many temples there. We took a local train to Kyoto, which was very interesting. We took the bullet train back to Osaka, and our car was mostly empty. What a difference! I'll post the Kyoto pictures in another post. These first pictures were taken as we walked back from the train station. It was a grey day and very polluted. The giant Ferris wheel as seen from Volendam. It was the first large one we saw. Back on board, we had dinner in the Lido, which at that time, you picked up your appetizer and salad, then placed your order which was cooked and delivered to your table. After dinner we walked over to the aquarium and went through it. The aquarium is multi-storied. You take an elevator to the top, and begin walking down a gently sloped ramp that circles a very, very large tank. As you descend, the sea life changes from fish that live near the surface to the denizens of the deep. This is the outside of the aquarium. Dismomx5 Posted May 24, 2021 #29 Share Posted May 24, 2021 Good morning! And Happy Victoria Day for those across our great land! Landing on the 24th is a real bonus this year. It really is the May 2-4 weekend! Thanks to Rich for getting the thread started and Jacqui and Roy for the lists; to Cat for the wine and Debbie for the meal. It's a cloudy day in southwestern Ontario, and it will be a quiet one-except for any backyard fireworks displays tonight. We've been treated each night this weekend by different neighbours. It's a bit cooler today compared to the heat we've had all weekend-high of 25ºC today. I never got a tiara when I retired, although we have two in the house....I'll have to dig one out for dinner. Being a teacher, when I retired, I got a 12" hand school bell. I have a smaller one that I received when I changed jurisdictions, and my 3 yo grandson likes to ring the bells when he visits. He prefers the bigger, louder, one! Cheers to those who are celebrating good news, and prayers for those that need them....our list is quite long these days. Blessings to all!

mamaofami Posted May 24, 2021 #31 Share Posted May 24, 2021 Good morning everyone. Happy Victoria Day to all our Canadian friends. Love today’s menu and I love escargot, especially the ones I used to get on our blue hulled beauties. We find ourselves in a peculiar situation with our accountant who is hospitalized with no diagnosis. We are on extension for our taxes but have no idea how much we will owe in June and can’t find out until he’s diagnosed and hopefully released from the hospital. Our other option is to find a new accountant which we don’t want to do yet. After two very hot days in the 90s, we are getting a welcome break today of highs about 68. Prayers for all those on the care list which seems to be getting longer. Stay safe everyone. Carol

Seasick Sailor Posted May 24, 2021 #33 Share Posted May 24, 2021 Good rainy, windy morning to our Daily-ites. Thank you Rich for the Daily!! Love to my east and west coast sisters. Ann I love your retirement picture!! When I left Boeing in 1998 I got a bottle of scotch, and I did not drink at the time.. Happy Victoria Day! Roy we are thankful you are recovering so well. You have been in our prayers for many months now and so happy you are coming along. Pork chops on the menu tonight. Garlic hasn't agreed with me since I had GB surgery years ago. I used to love escargot!! Leaving for a routine appt and will catch up later on today. 21
Quartzsite Cruiser Posted May 24, 2021 #34 Share Posted May 24, 2021 Here are some of my pictures of Kyoto. These are the two trains we rode. I did not get any pictures inside the first train, but it was crowded. It looks like there were six others in our car on the bullet train. Scenes as we walked to the temple. Pictures from the temple. Sorry, I don't remember which temple out of the many temples in Kyoto we visited. A view of Kyoto from the temple. The street leading to the temple Kyoto Station, where ironically, we found some very good Chinese food for lunch. Happy Victoria Day to my Canadian neighbors! **Thank you Rich for the daily; glad to see the NA moved over to Long Beach, maybe I can spot her on the cam now. Friends on Face had pics yesterday of the K arriving in San Diego, so nice to see and can't wait until the first arrival into Elliott Bay! **Thank you Roy for the shout out, very kind and considerate, from the comments of people I gather you are recovering from something too, so sending thoughts your way! **Thank you Jacqui for the prayer list, all of which I've added to my own. Have never been to today's port, but thanks for all the pictures, it looks beautiful and how I admire their efficient train system, don't get me started on ours.-😞 @dfish No dog last night I'm assuming? I will send over some of Seattle's rain. When is my back not hurting? No tiaras here, I don't think I've ever worn one, what do you think would look good on me?-🤣 I think I can handle a small portion of the shrimp, probably a no to the gin though, I'd be under the table for sure from one of those. I've been to the store already and stopped for my LARGE iced coffee, and I'm about to start my day as a permanent WFH professional, but I'm lucky, I was allowed that before Covid. Trying to think of some kind of tidbit of my own I can contribute everyday but I always end up stuck in analysis paralysis; I will give it more thought. Have a good day everyone!
lindaler Posted May 24, 2021 #36 Share Posted May 24, 2021 (edited) Thanks Rich and all who contribute to make this the best place to be. I first had escargot on a BHB when I was talked into it by my Mother. Since that night I haven’t missed a chance to enjoy them any time they are on the menu. I don't anticipate a prolonged problem. 1 hour ago, Dismomx5 said: I never got a tiara when I retired, although we have two in the house....I'll have to dig one out for dinner. I was perplexed because as a retired person, I didn't expect to have much use for clocks. I have to admit the bell has since moved on to some other location. So did quite a few of the clocks. 16
Horizon chaser 1957 Posted May 24, 2021 #38 Share Posted May 24, 2021 Good morning, and Happy Victoria Day, all! I love escargot, but never did get a tiara when I retired. I did get a very pretty moonstone necklace, so I guess my tiara just slipped down a little.I think maybe the quote was truer two years ago than it is today. Shrimp scampi sounds wonderful, but not on our menu tonight. Today is socked in with rain, which makes it easier to be staying home with no Victoria Day festivities to join in. This is the second year in a row it’s been a quiet weekend instead of a busy one. But tomorrow is the last day of regional lockdown, which is something to celebrate. The rain is good for the plants, and the big leaf maples. I’ve been watching the Saskatoon forecast. On Friday, DD in Colonsay sent me a picture of her yard covered in snow. Yesterday she sent a picture of the same yard with the grass freshly cut and looking like summer. Now the heavy rainfall warning! @ger_77Yikes! Stay safe and dry, Gerry! For those not from the west coast, I’ll share a picture of a maple leaf. It was too big to use printing DD’s birthday shawl. I’ll share a pic of that too, although it’s still a work in progress. A big leaf maple living up to the name. DD’s peace silk shawl with prints, but needing an after dip for background colour. I don’t usually share a work in progress. This is a story of growing up in the woods of Salt Spring Island. From the ground up are buttercups and ferns, then the lower trees of hawthorn, Garry oak, her friends chestnut tree and our walnut tree, the big leaf maples, and finally the towing fir trees. It’s too hot in Taiwan for her to wear it much, so she plans to use it spread out on her bed. That gave me the idea of making it a story shawl that changes along the length rather than a repeating or symmetrical pattern. And of course, Happy Monday, even if it’s not spent on a BHB- yet!

USN59-79 Posted May 24, 2021 #41 Share Posted May 24, 2021 Another cool, cloudy day here. I think the reason for no pics of Angola is that not many passengers really want to stop there. We were on the 2014 WC with Roy and scheduled to stop in three West African countries. Capt. Mercer sent us all a letter saying we would miss all of them and stop at some islands off Africa instead. Mostly the reason was an ebola outbreak in the region. I was happy with that decision. @garlictown mentioned they will be on the Noordam in 2022 and will miss Osaka. We will be on her from 14 February to 28 March and are scheduled to stop in Osaka on 15 and 16 February and 12 March. We get on and off in Yokohama and will stop at 15 Japanese ports in the 42 days.
Marmot@Sea Posted May 24, 2021 #42 Share Posted May 24, 2021 Happy Victoria Day! sailingdutchy Posted May 24, 2021 #45 Share Posted May 24, 2021 This was on our cruise with the Volendam in October / November of 2017 . We had a fantastic tour from Osaka , Japan to go for the day to Kyoto with 3 other couples and guided by a retired professor Mr Ken Sakurai a man with incredible knowledge and wonderful humour in a very comfortable Jumbo Taxi with wifi for all ! Because of the large number of pictures I might do it in a couple of posts First stop was at the Fushimi- Inaru Shrine and viewing the five storied Pagoda Our next place to visit was the Kinkaku- Ji Temple ( Golden Pavilion ) . An incredible beautiful place and gorgeous setting which despite a mild rain we all really enjoyed. After spending quite a bit of time here it was time to dry up a little and have a wonderful Japanese lunch , I always invite the guide and the driver to join us ,that way we get the best information about the local menus and what to order in the foreign countries for a little bit of extra cost for the group . To be continued after the break …….. 22
Cruising-along Posted May 24, 2021 #46 Share Posted May 24, 2021 Good morning all! In a rush this morning, I'm running late to meet my friend for lunch up north, will check in again later today! We had a crazy day yesterday, our 8-year-old grandson broke his arm in 2 places when we were all at a family gathering. 😞 Broke my heart to see him hurting so much. 😞 His Dad is a PA so got him fixed up and he and DD whisked him off to the local hospital where they spent the next 5 or 6 hours. We kept the other grandson with us as they dealt with all that. Not the way we wanted to spend our first large family gathering! 13
cruzn single Posted May 24, 2021 #47 Share Posted May 24, 2021 (edited) Happy Monday. Somehow I haven’t made it for posting here for a few days.I have read everyday. Thoughts and prayers for all on each day. It is always good news when the care list decreases. Happy Victoria Day to all the wonderful Canadians! I don’t have a tiara, and am not sure how it would look with my everyday attire of jeans or capris. We flew to Osaka for our Volendam cruise, but went immediately to Kobe where the ship was docked. I was impressed with how clean both cities were in the parts we saw. Would like to return at some time in the future.. We always felt deprived because our planned Japanese cruise was so drastically altered. We never got any of the moisture that @durangoscotsmentioned last week. Just heavy winds, which thankfully have quit today. Prospects are not looking good as we move to fire season. My work with Red Cross is in preparation mode. With the resumption of Alaskan cruises , I am getting “itchy” to inquire about cabin availability and dates. Hope that everyone has a wonderful day! durangoscots Posted May 24, 2021 #50 Share Posted May 24, 2021 Chilly this morning in Durango.... as a matter of fact, the lawns where sprinklers were not turned off had ice. Supposed to warm up into the 70's today. I will happy to eat anyone's escargot and I like shrimp scampi as long as I do not have to prepare them. Have been to Osaka just once and liked it very much. We stayed in the city since my traveling companion at that time was not feeling terribly well. I would very much like to go back but I have to really watch my Asian travels.... the food does not agree with me for some reason. I know not to eat off the ship. Happy Victoria Day to the northern contingent. Everyone take care. We all have to be healthy enough to head for the ships when it is time. I, also, am looking at Alaska this Fall, but may have to wait. Susan
