StLouisCruisers Posted August 23, 2021 #26 Share Posted August 23, 2021 I pulled out a photo of us with our young Army dentists Abby and Jesse taken the same evening after visiting Dubrovnik. We are both about 5 1/2 feet tall and obviously they are both about 6 feet tall. Either that or wearing very high heels.

I don't think anyone can say it better than @cat sheparddid so I will quote her "We all need to remember victims of those two regimes, and honor them by helping to prevent similar atrocities". So, so true!! The quote of the day is a great one. And of course I always like the pulled pork recipes. For those on our Care list, I send you my prayers and good thoughts as you cope with your woes. Those who are celebrating, especially @Vict0riannon her birthday, cheers!! DD tells me my DGS Tyler who is the same grandson who had his belated graduation ceremony this month, is having surgery on his back tomorrow. He has been suffering for a while now. I heard something about a gym injury but I'm not sure. Anyway they have to make a small incision and shave off a disc which is protruding into a nerve. Up until now he has only gotten relief from epidural shots but that can't go on forever. So a few prayers for this 23 year old for his surgery tomorrow would be appreciated. Dubrovnik, Croatia is a beautiful port and a great one on any cruise of the Adriatic Sea. We were there in 2012 on Crown Princess and in 2017 on the Westerdam. The first time we met a young couple who were both dentists in the Army. They went on a tour I set up in Naples and we hung out a lot in the ports of call on that cruise. In Dubrovnik we took a cab from the ship to the Old City and walked the city walls together. You get quite the views up there. And don't we all enjoy places like this? From 2017 on the Westerdam the Franjo Tudman Bridge Our view from the ship On the 2017 visit we took a taxi with friends again to the Old City, but we walked back to the ship after our time spent there. It was a nice hot August day, too, so we were pretty tired when we got back to the ship. Going to dinner at 8 pm we stuck our head outside and took some nice sunset photos. Some of these photos look eerily like some of ours!

Rare TiogaCruiser Posted August 23, 2021 #31 Share Posted August 23, 2021 (edited) Good Morning All, Another week starting! Where does time go? And today is starting out lovely, with cloud cover. @grapau27, @StLouisCruisers, @ger_77, Dubrovnik is now in my travel hope chest. But for now, it’s domestic travel with DH, alone or with vaccinated friends. My new tent is expected to arrive today. Hope it comes early so I can get Sean sealer applied. I’m replacing a tent that was so sticky it was hard to open. Have a great day, everyone! Edited August 23, 2021 by TiogaCruiser
Cruising-along Posted August 23, 2021 #32 Share Posted August 23, 2021 Good morning all! A worthy collection of days today and I will definitely hug my sweetheart today. The meal and drink both sound good, will pass on the red wine though. On the agenda today is lunch with a friend and a haircut. Today DH is getting his booster Covid shot, mine is tomorrow. SO glad we're able to get them. @Vict0riannhappy birthday! @StLouisCruiserssending up prayers for your DGS surgery tomorrow. My niece had similar back surgery when she was in college (she played volleyball) and has had no problems since. We have been to Dubrovnik 3 times and will be there again on our next cruise this fall. I love all of Croatia. The first time was pre-digital, so no photos but we just wandered around on our own that day. The second time was in 2019 and we took a tour to 4 wineries, the third time we took a tour into Bosnia. View of Dubrovnik from hillside We were entertained that night by a talented group of Dalmatian singers and dancers. One of the wineries we visited Mosque in Mostar, Bosnia Mostar Mostar bazaar

kb4683 Posted August 23, 2021 #37 Share Posted August 23, 2021 Good Morning! Thanks for The Daily and all who contribute. Cheers to those celebrating and healing thoughts to those on the care list. We have been fortunate enough to call at Dubrovnik three times. The first time was 11/22/2011, on Celebrity Solstice. The day started out beautiful and we walked the walls Then it started to rain so we ducked into d'Vino Wine Bar There were 4 of us!! We stayed so long, the owner ran across the way and brought us back something to eat! Second time was 11/8/2015, onboard Island Princess. The sail in was beautiful. We saw some newlyweds leaving church Loved their shoes! Back to d'Vino (no wine flights this time) Sailing out was also beautiful The last time was 11/26/2017, on Pacific Princess. We just walked around -- don't think we hit d'Vino this time (at least there are no pictures). 25

dfish Posted August 23, 2021 #39 Share Posted August 23, 2021 @StLouisCruisers Double prayers for Tyler and for a successful surgery. As others have said, he is way too young to have back problems. Mine started in my early 30s when I was told I had the spine of an 80 year old. 10

Quartzsite Cruiser Posted August 23, 2021 #41 Share Posted August 23, 2021 We have been to Dubrovnik nine times, and all but one time on a BHB. These pictures are from our two cruises on the old Noofdam in 2002 and 2004. We were also there in 2003 on the old Regal Princess. Then, Croatia and all the Balkan area was still recovering trom the Balkan War and a lot od damage was still visible. At that time, the area was just opening to tourists and Dubrovnik was not crowded like it is now, especially since the Game of Thrones was filmed there. In 2019, when we were there three times on Veendam (b2b2bs), one of the shop clerks told us she did not like all the extra toruists as all the wanted to know about was the movie, not the history of the area. We were glad we were there early when it was not really crowded and it was easy to walk around the town and see everything. In 2002, we walked around Dubrovnik before wallking the wall. This is one of the pictures from our wall walk. It is an overhead view of the big fountain just inside the gate. That day, we took a small boat out to Otok Lokeum, the small island off shore from the small boat harbor. The Benedictine Monastery of St. Mary The island and a local resident There are too many pictures for one post, so I'll show 2004 in another post. Quartzsite Cruiser Posted August 23, 2021 #42 Share Posted August 23, 2021 The 2004 pictures from our Noordam cruise. We decided to take a tour to the Neretva River area and a boat ride on the river. After the Balkan War and the realignment of the countries in that area, Bosnia-Herzegovina was given a 10 kilometer strip of land, which cut Croatia in two, so it could have a coast line. Our bus stopped in Neum in that strip so we could get off and say we had been to Bosnia-Herzegovina/ Neum Croatian countryside The river cruise and the surrounding area. Quartzsite Cruiser Posted August 23, 2021 #43 Share Posted August 23, 2021 Our second tme in Dubrovnik was in 2003 on the Regal Princess. After walking around the old town, we took a city bus out to a beach area. We also found a taxi to take us to the top of the mountain that is now serviced by a cable car. The beach area The mountain top with views of the old town and the war damage. We have not been back up there since it was restored and the cable car was running again. These are for @StLouisCruisers Sandi, from our visit in 2017 on the Prinsendam. The ship needed more balast during our b2b2b2b... cruises. At one point, IIRC, they poured concrete into the lower part of the ship, but evidently that was not enough. On this stop, they added a huge concrete block, and it took several people holding the rope to get it accomplished. The original people manning the rope were not enough, so another "crew" member jumped in to help. That is one thing I have always liked about HAL and expecially the Prinsendam. No one is to important in rank to hlep when needed, including Capt. DD. I was just glad to be there to see how quickly he came to their rescue. StLouisCruisers Posted August 23, 2021 #45 Share Posted August 23, 2021 Thanks again to all the warm words of comfort about Tyler. I sure hope this works well for him. I've enjoyed so many unique photos of Dubrovnik and the surrounding areas. It's a beautiful place. And Lenda thanks for the photos of our super captain, D.D. Quartzsite Cruiser Posted August 23, 2021 #46 Share Posted August 23, 2021 One last group of pictures. These are from last of the three times we were in Dubrovnik in 2019 on the Veendam. This time, we took a city bus out to a resort area and enjoyed sitting on their patio with a coke. The hotel as we sailed past on our way to the next port. The top of the mountain in 2019. after the war damage was repaired and a new cable car installed. The Croatians will flock to any beach even small ones. This was outside the city walls. The rest of our pictures are very similar to those already posted. Lenda
jimgev Posted August 23, 2021 #47 Share Posted August 23, 2021 (edited) Good Morning. Thankk you Rich and Roy for the Daily and the lists. Both meal suggestions sound great. It is extremely important that we remember the horrors of Hitlar and Stalin. But, unfortunately, the world is not doing a very good job in that regard. In almost every region of the world, there is increased tendencis to return to the policies that we say we want never to happen again. Think back, the similarities that Hitlar and Stalin had were to dupe people into believeing that a specific minoritiy or minorities were to blame for all the problems their countries were experiencing and pursecuting those people was the way to solve problems. Does that sound familiar today? Those were the foundations of the horrors which were enacted upon millions of good, innocent peoples under the *** and Stalin regimes. We have not learend the lessons of history. I need to be careful to not make this a political post and it is not intended to be such. But we really do need to do a LOT more in the way of remembering the lessons of history. Edited August 23, 2021 by jimgev 20
bennybear Posted August 23, 2021 #48 Share Posted August 23, 2021 (edited) Good morning and thanks all! @Vict0riann happy birthday! @StLouisCruisers sending prayers for Tyler! We've been fortunate to have visited Dubrovnik four times, so we’ve walked the wall, eaten at some of its lovely restaurants. We have visited the interesting town of Ston which has walls more like the Great Wall and salt pans. And last cruise 2019 we visited the beautiful seaside town of Cavtat and returned by boat, sailing by some mega yachts and some remains of bombed hotels.
