Favorite/Least favorite WJ buffet items?

Recommended Posts

My favorite - the very simply roasted chicken.  This is like crack for me.  I could eat my not inconsiderable weight in WJ roasted chicken!!

Hubby & son agree with the mashed potatoes with whatever stew is available ladled on top.

Least - I will echo the watery scrambled eggs and way over cooked bacon.  I love bacon but those crunchy greasy things in the pan at WJ are an insult to the hog.

I know this is going to sound strange but I love the corned beef hash at breakfast.  Second would be the Mongolian grill.

Bill

I tried the corned beef hash this morning after I saw this post and have to wholeheartedly agree. Definitely some of the best. Very flavorful and ‘meaty’ tasting.

Is Boarding day on Wonder like this on every cruise on that ship  or was that a one done and never to be seen again on that ship?  and only because it was the ship's first sailing?

Lobster tails...in the WJ...Well I have never seen this and I look every cruise.

It was a unique voyage. But I think they kept it up for a few weeks.

Now I have seen lobster in Jammer a few times. Usually the day after it was served in MDR😉

Not sure what they do/add to mashed potatoes but, in all likelihood, they’re instant. Same with scrambled eggs.

According to The Chief Mr Chang, the mashed potatoes and scrambled eggs are NOT instant. I think that’s why the mashed potatoes are so good— they taste like real buttery potatoes. I’ve had them every day this week. Yum!

I would expect the World Voyage on Serenade  to be just like that on embarkment day, after that the food will go downhill day after day until 274 days later. 😉 might end up with Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches on the last day of the cruise.

Hopefully the income from this cruise keeps up for the entire cruise, otherwise you might see a decline in the food. I'm sure Royal will be watching the till closely for this voyage. Hoping they have a lot of big spenders spending a lot of money once on the ship.(Casino and excursions, spa etc.)

The scary part is from like May 17th to July 17th there are only like 6 or 7 sea days the entire time 60 days, that will be very taxing on the crew and the passengers to keep up that pace Health wise let alone in your pocket $$$.

Hardest item to find is ginger. Laura sometimes brings a tube and keeps in the fridge. I like foraging. Adds excitement 😆

Our friend that we cruise with loves crushed red pepper and always had such a hard time getting it in the MDReven when we said they probably had it in Sorrentos. They never seem to find it for her, so now she brings her own.

Odyssey is impressive. I understand Wonder is the new king of the buffets

So far Odyssey has had the best food in the WJ, so I’m looking forward to Wonder when we sail in November.

Favorite foods in WJ:

I love smoked salmon for breakfast. I don’t eat anything else except fresh fruit with that every day….occasionally I have the guacamole toast though. Every day at lunch they have delicious roasted vegetables and one day they had amazing roasted butternut squash. I gobbled that up. I find their meats  overcooked most of the time, but occasionally there’s a good one.

Least favorite:

All their desserts. I don’t eat any of them. Either they have no flavor to me, or they’re spongy. Even their cookies aren’t good. Only the white chocolate macadamia ones which they never seem to have anymore ☹️

Another vote for anything from a made-to-order station. 😍

For everything else, preparation seems to vary significantly, so something I loved on my last cruise might be just "eh" this time around, or vice versa.  I usually start with very small portions, just a bite or two, of a few different things and go back for what I liked the best.

Your intimate knowledge of such things never fails to impress.😉🤣🤣

FWIW, based on my extensive amount of foreign cruising, I would expect the Jammer to be regularly stocked with regional cuisine.

Likely MDR as well

Last day of cruise will be a massive farewell party. Hoping we have CocoCay to ourselves

Really can't see the casino and spa doing a booming business. Excursions are the cash cow on a trip like this. Plan accordingly. No sense in going if you don't 'get out there'

Not sure I understand the 60 day comment

I don’t know if you’ve seen all the port of call boards; many places have lots of safe excursion options that aren’t tied to the cruise ship. That may give you a *little* more balance those two vacation options!

I think it would, but I generally just categorize trips as "relaxation" (maybe with a little history) or "history/culture."  Like when I go to Athens, it takes me several days just to get through the National Archeological Museum, let alone everything else in the city...

Anyone on a recent Harmony. The had an amazing array of cakes one night in the WJ. They had the most amazing carrot cake was shaped in a log style that they sliced as ordered. The best cream cheese frosting best cake I've ever had during my many trips to the WJ. I commented on it and was told that pastry chef was fairly new...Well It's about time RCI hires someone that actually knows what their doing instead of all the gelatin based no taste stuff they try to pass off just because they can make it look appealing.

Favorite? Cake pops when they have them.  And the ranger cookies.

Least favorite?  Bread pudding with that light, creamy sauce. I’m used to NOLA style bread pudding with caramel whiskey sauce, and tasting the one onboard was like 😡

Me too... but why is it always the first day???

Yes!  Me too.  That was the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread.

Otherwise, like someone else said, I always seem to be drawn toward that baked chicken.  🙂

Faves: Curries and Naan for sure!  Although I wish they were a little more spicy. Also Fish & chips and the Caramel Bread Pudding, Ranger Cookies and the sliced dried fruit bread at breakfast.

Least Fave:  Any tough Roast Beef or overcooked steak.  Also do not like their dry scrambled eggs.

Are the scrambled eggs from an eggshell or a box?  Makes a big difference.  How long are they cooked?

Fav:  all the smoke salmon I can eat for breakfast.

Least fav:  overcooked fish for lunch with no sauce = cardboard fish.

Least:  I call it fish jerky.  Many don't know how to cook fish so that is is soft and flaky.

One waitress in a restaurant wanted to argue about it.  Said that EVERYBODY wants fish jerky.

FWIW:  The Health Dept. shut that restaurant down because of sanitation and improper food storage temps.
