Rare Nickelpenny Posted February 3 #26 Share Posted February 3 Good Morning to all and thanks for the daily and fleet report. Happy, Happy Birthday Elmo! (though my fav is Mr. Snuffleupagus - shhhh, don't tell Elmo!) I don't have a dog - mainly because I like big dogs, I don't have room for them to play outside and my life just doesn't lend itself to a dog. I like several American painters - Georgia O'Keefe, Mary Cassatt, Jackson Pollock - to name a few. A good day to celebrate. Interesting quote, yum - beef stroganoff, ? drink, no to the wine, and I had an assignment on the Puget Sound in Bremerton and then in Seattle years ago. No pics though! What a collection of days in history - happy to sad. @marshhawk so sorry to hear about Bubbles but you did the right thing IMHO. <hugs> The rain is gone. It came off and on yesterday with periods of sun throughout the day. Today it will be sunny but cool - presently 42F and only getting up to the mid 50s. Yesterday was interesting but I was tired by time I got home. Missed a couple of the check ins for a research study I am in. You only have 10 minutes to respond once the notification pops up. I think today is the last day for it (it was for 10 days, I think) and then I do the MRI part of the study Wednesday. Also was chosen for another study and will do that Monday morning. Then I will participate in a online focus group Thursday. Still doing another research study (RE: carcinogens) and will be doing that for a couple of months. 2 other ones will be wrapping up soon. I am just a human ginny pig!! Picked up my typhoid pills and anti-malaria pills so I am all prepared for the Amazon!! I will need to be careful with the sun on my cruise so I must be diligent about putting on sun screen! Well, off to the gym in a little while and then I must start preparing the apartment for my departure. Thoughts for those on the care list and cheers for those celebrating! Have a great day everyone. 20 1

kochleffel Posted February 3 #28 Share Posted February 3 SoCo Float Southern Comfort has been the source of many a young person's first, and worst, hangover. Its sweetness makes the alcohol palatable to an inexperienced drinker, and it's 100 proof. It was created in 1874 by Martin Wilkes in New Orleans as a flavored whiskey; for a while it was made with neutral spirit, but the current owner of the brand, Sazerac, has returned to using a whiskey base. The SoCo Float is made with Southern Comfort, vanilla vodka, and root beer. Root beer itself is sweet, and the drink has been described as a liquid dessert. I could imagine adding a scoop of ice cream for a boozy Boston Cooler. 1-1/2 oz Southern Comfort 1/2 oz Vanilla Vodka Root Beer 1 wedge Lime Fill a highball glass with ice. Add Southern Comfort and vanilla vodka, and fill with root beer. Squeeze a lime wedge over top and drop it in. 12

Seasick Sailor Posted February 3 #30 Share Posted February 3 Good morning Dailyites on a cloudy 54 degree morning. Thank you to all of our awesome participants who faithfully post. I love the Daily! Prayers lifted. Far too many ill in our neighborhood with nasty colds and coughs. Yesterday I got the entire 3rd bedroom cleaned out, boxed stuff I should have given away last year and they are in the car for goodwill, finished one shelving unit, and made chicken tortilla soup for dinner. Rain showers are due in the next hour, afterwards I'll head to the market, drop off the boxes, and start my spaghetti sauce for tomorrow. Tonight is probably salad and steak or pork chops. I'll have a special treat for Oliver too. Wishing all a peaceful, healthy, happy weekend. Blessings to all. 27

kochleffel Posted February 3 #35 Share Posted February 3 In honor of American Painters Day, here's "The Biglin Brothers Turning the Stake" by Thomas Eakins. It depicts the midpoint of a race in Philadelphia in 1872 (rowing was a popular spectator sport in the 19th century) and hangs in the Cleveland Museum of Art. Slow cooking seems like a complicated way to make stroganoff, but I'm sure we could work butternut squash into the recipe somehow. No on the drink unless ice cream is added. Nothing comparable to the wine in the Finger Lakes, so I'll suggest the 2020 Cabernet Franc from Lakewood Vineyards. I used to live in the Northwest, so of course I've been to the Puget Sound, although I've never embarked on a cruise from Seattle. 16 2

Rare Denise T Posted February 3 #40 Share Posted February 3 Welcome to Saturday! Thanks for the Daily and Fleet reports. Busy start today. Up early to get my sister's car to the dealer. Then out to breakfast. Nothing like some good ole diner food. Then grocery shopping. Today is laundry day. then some odd jobs around the house. As much as I hate getting up early, I get a lot done. Thinking of all on the care list. Celebrating with all who are celebrating. Have a safe and healthy day. 15

57redbird Posted February 3 #42 Share Posted February 3 Quick update on my recovery from my lumbar laminectomy & fusion done on Dec. 11 - back is a little tender where the hardware is, left hip & thigh have manageable pain - maybe 1 or 2 pain meds a day. Back to walking our dog .7 mile a day. I think for 7 weeks post-op I'm doing ok. 28

Rare Haljo1935 Posted February 3 #44 Share Posted February 3 Well I guess I can arrange a date night for my doggies, just never considered it. I am not from a Sesame Street family, but Elmo has been greatly loved by a lot of kiddos so I'll celebrate him. Yes to the meal & wine, would try the drink. Most recent visit to Puget Sound was last April on Eurodam; it's a lovely port. We will be there again May 12 and late Sept. 3 really important days in history. It was 54° when I got up this morning, that was 4 hours ago so I'm sure it's gotten closer to the forecasted 68°. The lake is still clearly presen in the backyard, so need some sun. Prayers and positive thoughts for all. April 29, 2023 was opening day for HALs 76th Alaskan season. We had a perfect day for boarding the Eurodam in Seattle and cruising the Puget Sound. As seen from our balcony. There was a ceremony with a band, local Chamber was presented a check by HAL & Crew, Miss WA and Miss AK greeted us at gangway. It was filmed by local TV station. 21

JazzyV Posted February 3 #47 Share Posted February 3 Good morning. Thanks for the Fleet Report/Daily. I like some American Painters. No dog here to date. HBD Elmo. Deep quote. I like the meal. Pass on the drink, and yes to the wine. I haven't been to Puget Sound. 2 good days, and 1 sad day with the plane crash and loss of life. I was too young to know about Buddy Holly, but have certainly heard about him and the others. @kazu and @rafinmd thanks for our start and maps. It's going to be nice out. It's cloudy now and 34F, but is supposed to be sunny and 45F this afternoon. It's been cloudy for so long! I got about 4 hours of sleep, in segments. BFF is supposed to come over around noon to help me pack up and move some stuff. There is so much, I'm overwhelmed! And I'm sad that after feeling much less pain on Tuesday, it's come back with a vengeance, just when I need to do stuff. Sigh. @StLouisCruisers Oh my about the coyote sighting in DD's neighborhood. There seem to be more sightings as development encroaches on the woods. @kazu Good to hear you're not getting the worst of the weather. Nonetheless, be safe! @superoma Thanks for the recipes. I use the daring gourmet website for a lot of German recipes, like maultaschen, goulash, etc. @0106 I hope you're able to get out of your cabins soon and enjoy the ship. @ger_77 I'm sorry DH had gotten to the point of pulmonary edema; that's serious! The stronger diuretic should help, but they need to come up with a more permanent solution. Again his course is mirroring BFF's Dad's about 15 years ago. @smitty34877 I'm sorry to hear it was a long night, and I do hope you can get some adequate rest and sleep. @Seasick Sailor Oliver is enjoying himself! @1ANGELCAT Breakfast of champions! @grapau27 Nice photos from your recent cruise. @Bgwest Welcome to the Fleet Report/Daily! @57redbird Thanks for the update. I hope your recovery continues smoothly. @Haljo1935 Thanks for the Puget Sound photos. Prayers for the Care List and Cheers for those Celebrating. 24

marshhawk Posted February 3 #49 Share Posted February 3 Good Saturday Morning Dailyites! My favorite american artist is Eric Sloane, I love his clouds and New England scenes. Now about Elmos' birthday, was this the day he appeared on Sesame Street, or when he was thought of. How do we really know when his birthday is? We threw out all the cushions from the porch. Washed all the blankets, and beds, I need to sweep out the porch, and probably replace the porch rug. We left the door open last night to air out the porch. And then we sat down to watch TV. I noticed movement on the porch-turned on the light, and there was Coal (a long haired black stray) who freaked out when the light came on. A half hour later, there was a small tiger stray, (we named Tiger) on the porch. I think DH really wants to adopt Tiger, but he is afraid that getting another cat will put Tazi over the edge. And Tiger only shows up around 5 to be fed, and comes back to be fed, and hangs around until about 11, and then goes on his way. Coal on the other hand lives in our yard. Is injured but way too wary of humans. It's 50 and sunny, and I left a window open last night, so it is pretty cool in the house. Heading north from Puget sound Seattle- Have a great day all! I'm going to call out sick today, there is no helping it, if I called you and coughed at you, it would remind you of why you dont want tickets to sit next to other people. 27 2
