The Fleet Report and Daily for Monday June 17th, 2024

Recommended Posts

Good morning all.  Another nice day in store here before the heatwave starts here tomorrow.

I’ll celebrate the days with a diet Stewart’s Root Beer and toast the other two days with it.

It seems like the quote can be interpreted two ways.  One way is she just wants life over with and the other because you know that it comes around once you cherish it more.  I’ll go with the second interpretation.

The meal sounds like it has potential and I would like the drink, I think.

We spent two nights in Talkeetna near the train station. We enjoyed our stay there very much.  It’s from where we flew around Denali.

Prayers for everyone on our prayer list.  Cheers to those celebrating happy events.  Happy birthday to @durangoscots and congratulations to @StLouisCruisers’ Cruise Critic anniversary! 🎂🎉

Good morning. Someone else can have my root beer and the savory galette.I have  not been to the port. Crocodiles are fine in their own environment. I was not aware that Francis Drake got to California. It must have looked incredible so many centuries ago.

Last night as I brought the dogs back in from their nightly amble I saw an injured raccoon in the driveway. He must have been hit by a car when he came over from the park. I called our city Animal control line and was somewhat surprised when they came only half an hour later to take him away.He was. big “Rocky” as we name all of them. People put their garbage cans out at dusk for our early morning pickup and the “Rockies “ have a great time tipping over cans and ripping through the bags.
My DD DH was quite a talker and I think he had a difficult time as his hearing worsened over the years. He was a former philosophy major who and loved a good argument. Thank goodness he was also a very classy guy and never brought up the political or religious issues of the day. We were on our last cruise together in 2018 and were at a table for 6. Of course, one couple kept bringing up uncomfortable subjects every night. I could feel him tensing up next to me and knew the signs of what was to come. That night we skipped dessert and I asked the MDR manager if we could have a table for two afterwards. I guess we were fortunate not to encounter that sort of thing previously.
Enjoy the day everyone and be careful in the heat.

Good morning, everyone!

I slept in later today for some reason.  The last I looked at the clock it was 6 am and the next time it was 7:40 am.  I know I was having a vivid dream of being caught with 4 stolen cats that had just shown up in my house.  That probably got my attention and I wanted to know how it turned out.  But I woke up as the police were coming to the door.

It is going to be a hot one.  I turned the air on last night and it cooled the house a little.  I had it set at 78 and the house is at 78.  I turned it down a bit this morning because I'll turn it back up at 2 pm so it doesn't run as much during prime time.  Rates are higher from 2 pm to 7 pm.  If I can reduce energy use during that time, I get discount from the energy company.  It is all such a racket.

Nothing on the agenda today except the gym.  If need be, we'll go sit in the mall and drink coffee outside Barnes and Noble.  We can get up and walk laps every so often.  But, we can keep cool with their air and save our $$.

@durangoscots Susan,

HappyBirthday3.jpg.1ea3c289da80db5f3886434fdde6b9c2.jpg

@StLouisCruisers I'm glad you are feeling a bit better.  Sorry you are missing the Greenland ports.  Thankfully, you were there last summer.

@Cruzin Terri I hope you start feeling better soon.

@kazu I hope the foot and leg are healing and not giving you too much trouble.

The savory galette sounds and looks good!  It seems easy to do, but not tonight as it requires the use of the oven.  Tonight's dinner is being done on the grill to keep the heat out of the house.  I like the mushroom filling on this one, but there are tons of things you can fill the galette with.  This sort of reminds me of the tomato pie from our first Daily summer.  Mushroom Galette

savorygalette1.thumb.jpg.47c2392e5176a958111b6f4242a73936.jpg

Here is one with zucchini, corn, and tomatoes.  You can use your favorite vegetables in the galette, but I would precook carrots so that they were soft and not hard.  Same with brussels sprouts.  Zucchini Corn and Tomato Galette

savorygalette2.thumb.jpg.820fbdc78d3db0b1c8be354fd6b8746b.jpg

Now, if you want to go fancy, this is the galette for you.  If you can't find the mizithra cheese, you can substitute with goat cheese or feta.  Fig and Prosciutto Galette

Wishing you all a wonderful day!

Good morning Dailyites.

Happy Birthday Susan.

Congratulations Sandi on your CC anniversary. I hope your cold turns the corner and you feel better soon.

Growing up, we loved going to A & W Rootbeer stand and having rootbeer floats. I haven't had pop in a long time.

We had a nice Father's day. Allen wanted purple hull crowder peas, ham hocks, and corn bread. And ice cream.

Vanessa, thank you for keeping Allen on the rotation list. I think you can remove him. I'll give an update in July.

Today we are having pedicures and going downtown for lunch. Nothing else planned, which is good!

Prayers lifted to all our Daily-ites in need, our troops, victims of these senseless mass shootings, those who are hungry and those who lost their homes and loved ones due to war torn countries. God bless them.

A fine drink for me to have at my current location. Last cruise on HAL I was playing the slots in the Casino. I won the jackpot when on the pay line three prunes appeared! 😀

Forgot to mention that after winning the slots by hitting the three prunes went to the dice table and crapped out! 😱😱

Good Monday morning to all.

Thank you Rich, Vanessa, Debbie, Ann, and Dixie for your contributions to this thread.

I hope everyone is doing well today.

I have not been to the destination.

The meal looks lovely but I am not up to cooking these days and cannot rely on DH for a meal.  So it will be the simplest thing I can do for the two of us.

I continue to feel sick and plan to remain indoors and have a few indoor projects that need attention with little physical exertion.

I have to cancel two appointments for tomorrow since I do not think it is fair to expose others to Covid.  I also have to postpone having my car serviced.

I really do not have much else to report.

We will both take Covid tests again today to see where we stand.  The plan is to do this every two days.   If DH does not come down with Covid, I am going to make sure he gets another vaccination. I am not able to have anymore because of my PMR.

@durangoscots Susan,  HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

That’s about all, folks,

Take care and

God Bless,

Terri

Good morning all,

Happy Birthday Susan!!! I miss our morning breakfast. It was great getting to know you on the GANZ cruise.

I am recovering from a busy weekend with the grands. We made dinner for my DS complete with a menu created by DGS. It is double the work when you up have help from a 4yo and 6yo. They really enjoyed it. I wish I had taken a picture of their handy work.  I am going to break down and get my walls repainted. They use flat paint on the new builds and you can’t wash the walls without damaging the paint. With the two little ones and the dog it is impossible to make it look good. Now that I have canceled my Antarctica cruise I can afford to do it.

I have booked my flight to Tucson in August. I will go the day before so the spa will pick us up Saturday morning so we can have the whole day. My niece wants to maximize every minute. She is a fun travel mate and really is good to me. I will need to find a place near the airport for a good meal.  I arrive in the afternoon and she arrives later that night.

Prayers for those in need. And have a great day.

Happy Monday!  It is important to combat Desertification and Drought. Proactive measures such as landscape restoration, sustainable water management, regenerative agriculture and disaster preparedness can help mitigate the negative impacts of drought and ensure a better future. I believe it was @bennybear who was dealing with water restrictions and realized how much water he “wasted” prior to the restrictions.  We all must try to conserve water on a daily basis.  Small changes such as never pouring water down the drain when there may be another use for it, repairing dripping faucets, operating dishwashers and clothes washers only when they are full make a difference.  You could plant native and/or drought-tolerant grasses, ground covers, shrubs and trees or participate in public water conservation meetings to support projects that lead to an increased use of reclaimed wastewater.

Emily Dickinson is one of my favorite poets.  Here is the entire poem.

That it will never come again

Is what makes life so sweet.

Believing what we don't believe

Does not exhilarate.

That if it be, it be at best

An ablative estate --

This instigates an appetite

Precisely opposite.

I believe the poem means you should live one’s life to the fullest and not spend one’s lifetime thinking about the next.

Positive thought to those who need them.  Cheers to those who are celebrating.

The nearest Stewarts store that I can think of is in Cooperstown. Maybe I'll get a root beer when I'm there in August.

A savory galette can be made with a variety of fillings, but leeks are often included. How to make any savory galette without a recipe. I might like the cocktail, maybe only once. Sauvignon Blanc does fairly well in the Finger Lakes and I might look at Hazlitt's 2023 (earlier vintages are still in stores), $21, "notes of lemongrass and flavors of papaya, grapefruit, and gooseberry that linger on the finish." The Point Reyes National Seashore in Marin County is along Drakes Bay and it is probably one of the few scenic places in that region that a college friend has never insisted on taking me.

The high temperature today will be about 91° and the rest of the week will be warmer, but right now it's 72°. I have a meeting at the synagogue late this afternoon but there is a meeting room with A/C. I am glad that the ritual committee insisted on moving services for the summer, starting last week, to the chapel, which has A/C, since the main sanctuary doesn't.  The rabbi likes the main sanctuary better even though it has a seating capacity about 20 times the average attendance. After that I'll go to the organic farmers' market and hope there are still pattypan squashes.

Thank you Rich, Vanessa, Debbie, Ann, and Dixie.  I’m sure crocodiles have some function in the balance of nature but won’t celebrate them.  I haven’t heard of Stewarts specifically but enjoy root beer although I haven’t had it recently.  Combating Desertification and Drought is critical as our rainfall patterns seem to be a lot more localized.

A lot to think about in the Dickinson quote.,

I’m surprised that HAL considers Talkeetna as one of their destinations and consider it more of a Princess destination, although HAL and Princess work so closely together it’s not out of the question.  I know I’ve stopped and perhaps stepped off to stretch there a couple of times from the McKinley Explorer train.  One time I was on a purportedly Princess tour but on a HAL rail car..

A great day in exploration history,.

I’ll pass on the meall..  My alternative is Custom Lido Omelet my final onboard meal  on my 2015 MS Prinsendam cruise on June 17..

I am back from my mall walk, back to pretty much my normal walk.  It will be HOT today and hotter later in the week..

Happy birthday Susan. @durangoscots Happy CC Anniversary @StLouisCruisers Sandi.

Good Monday Morning Dailyites! It's hot in hotlanta.  79 now, but last night at 11:30 it was 84, so I know we are in for more this week!  Ick I hate hot.

DH forgot to get his car inspected (yes I nagged, and Im the one who drives it) but he never scheduled any time to do it, so late as usual, and we need to get it inspected, and pay the tag cost, need to walk the dog, get my second shingles shot, pick up some groceries, and then go to work.

I too slept late, but that is because I didnt sleep well, and decided to just continue sleeping this morning.  I kept hearing things out on the porch, and checked in on the kittens twice, (might have been @dfishkidnapping them.🙀 .)

We let them in yesterday and they tore around the den until they wore themselves out, and then they all crashed.  I fed them early and put them back out on the porch.

I love rootbeer, especially with two scoops of vanilla ice cream in it.

@rafinmd I hope you are feeling better today.

@grapau27Thank you for bringing us Father David yesterday. With the recent food porn you have presented, I thought you might be on a cruise.

@Cruzin TerriTake it easy, get plenty of rest, drink lots of water. Hope you feel better soon.

@StLouisCruisersHappy CC anniversary.  I never really thought about when I joined up, but it's the same day that @smitty34877 did, just two years earlier.

@JazzyV I hope that you and @Denise T can both stay cool, and I am so happy that you are getting more sleep!

Two years ago when Bridgerton started on Netflix, DH said it was the stupidest show on the tube, but I binged watched year one, and only saw two from year 2, but last night I binged watched 4 episodes of year 3, and forced myself to go to bed.  And DH watched!  Not sure if he pays attention, but he said he liked it.

He ahs been busy playing with his birthday present-the drone. So far he has crashed it into the street, (needed some repair) the bushes in the front of the house, the neighbors driveway, and last night told me that he sent it across the street to Donna's house, but then he couldn't see it and let it crash again.  It does have a home button, you press it, and it comes back to you.  Not sure he remembers where that button is.

Have a great day everyone!

Good morning, thanks for the Fleet Report and Daily!  Our DS is a super fan of root beer and Stewart's is his favourite.  I had no idea crocodiles were meaner than alligators - neither would find me intentionally anywhere near them.   Our hearts are saddened whenever we see reports of drought anywhere in the world, knowing how devastating it is to life of all kinds.

Although it didn't rain overnight, this morning we're greeted by clouds and a temperature of only 9C(48F); looking at the weather app, we might not see much sunshine today and will only reach a high of 16(60).  For those currently under or looking at an impending heat dome, please take care and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

@durangoscotswishing you a very Happy Birthday with many healthy and happy returns of the day!

@StLouisCruisersI'm glad you're feeling a bit better; hopefully the trend continues for you.

Yesterday was nice - in the morning we went for breakfast and to our surprise, DH's daughter and her hubby were there as well, so it was nice to have the group all together for a bit.  The day was spent indoors (pouring rain), but last night our "adopted" daughter Sophia dropped over with a Father's Day gift for DH - a fitness tracker that he can wear now that he's in cardiac rehab.  She's so thoughtful, and such a sweet person. Our DS and the grandsons did a video call so they could all talk with DH last night as well.

Not much on our agenda today, I might take down the curtains in our bedroom and toss them in the washing machine to freshen them up.  Ollie said she "found" more things for us, so will likely drop over this afternoon for coffee - it will be interesting to see what else Gord had in his stash of boxes.

I'd like to try the drink (I've written it down to be used for testing purposes), will let others enjoy the wine, and would enjoy the first galette, but likely won't make one.  I realized I haven't made a tomato pie in absolute ages, so will have to dig out the recipe one of these days and put one together.  I've got a couple of salmon fillets to crumb coat and cook in the air fryer, combined with oven fried potatoes and a side salad that we can enjoy on the deck tonight.  And wine.

Prayers for everyone who is in need, in pain, in grief, in wars, and in the path of horrible mass shooters.  Cheers to all with celebrations.

Smooth Sailing!  ☺️☺️☺️

Good sunny morning from central Texas.  It is already 78F and feels like 86F with a predicted high of 92F.  Currently the humidity is 97% with a dew point of 77F.  The weather app says the wind is 11mph, but our neighbor's flag is saying it's not that high yet.  This afternoon, the wind is predicted to reach 17mph from the SSE.  The only thing outside to take care of today is putting the smoker back in place after cleaning the drip pan and emptying the wood box before putting the trash out.  Otherwise, I have things to do inside such as polishing the silver, especially the pieces not in the china cabinet, which also needs dusting.  We were married at a time when we received a lot of silver pieces as wedding gifts.  So every year or two, it they get polished, and the cabinet cleaned until the next time.  I doubt the DDs want any of the silver, china or crystal, and I really need to find a home for all but a few special pieces like my mother's candelabras.

I like root beer and root beer floats, but haven't had any for quite a while.  Crocodiles do have their place in the environment, but I don't want to meet one up close, although the jumping crocodiles outside Darwin, AU, were interesting.  We do need to combat desertification and drought, although they are basically part of the weather cycles.

The Emily Dickinson quote is good.  Thank you, Tina, @0106 for posting the poem.

We'll pass on the meal, drink and wine today.

We have been to Talkeetna a few times, in the motorhome and in rental cars from Anchorage on the 14-day Alaska cruises.  It is 113 miles north of Anchorage, and takes a little more than two hours on the Parks Highway to get there.  It is the base for Denali flight seeing airplanes.  On a clear day, you can see Denali from a lodge outside of Talkeetna.

An interesting day in 1579 when Sir Francis Drake arrived off the coast of California.

@StLouisCruisers  Sandi, I'm glad you are feeling a bit better, and that you are not coughing as much.  I hope the soccer tournament can happen today.  Happy CC Anniversary.

@kazu  Jacqui, I hope your appointment and the hunt for boxes go well today.

@ottahand7  Nancy, I hope the tornado near your winter home did not do any damage.

@smitty34877  We used to have a racoon and her babies visit our house in The Woodlands.  Once the racoon trapped our cats up a tree.

@dfish  Debbie, having a father and a husband who worked for electric utilities, I realize the higher rates from either 2 to 7pm or 4 to 8pm are to encourage people to conserve energy during those hours of peak demand in the summer.  The discount is another incentive.  If everyone used as much power as they wanted during peak times, it could cause a system overload on extremely hot days, and power outages.  So what you call a racket is a way to prevent overloads by the companies.  The money factor gets peoples attention better than just asking them to reduce usage during peak hours.

@marshhawk  Annie, I'm glad your DH likes his drone.

@ger_77  Gerry, that was nice that your DH's daughter and SIL were at the Father's Day breakfast, too.

@Cruzin Terri  Terri, I hope you are feeling better soon, and that your DH continues to test negative.

Since I started typing this, the heavy clouds have moved in, and we've lost our sunny day.  We are not supposed to get any rain until Wednesday, or maybe Tuesday night.
