Daghis Posted March 21, 2018 #1 Share Posted March 21, 2018 I saw something a couple of days ago that I'd never seen before since Royal Caribbean went no-smoking in most public venues on their ships. As I was walking along the Royal Promenade on Oasis of the Seas, I noticed a woman on a scooter who had positioned herself facing into a corner between Café Promenade and Kate Spade (formerly the Cupcake Cupboard). It seemed odd that she seemed to be just staring into the corner, but then I noticed her right hand had two fingers outstretched in a way that seemed to be characteristic of how a smoker might hold a cigarette. Then I saw her exhale a cloud of smoke. She then dropped the cigarette on the floor and stepped on it to extinguish it. As she was backing out of her smoking corner, a crew member confronted her. She kept backing up while offering that she had no idea why there were the two (!) cigarette butts on the floor. She then drove away as the crew member watched her go. He seemed both befuddled and frustrated.

cb at sea Posted March 22, 2018 #4 Share Posted March 22, 2018 Unfortunately, crew members are loathe to confront anyone, unless MANY folks are complaining. On a ship, it seems majority rules. They will never confront anyone unless others are more vocal and complaining.
pingpong1 Posted March 22, 2018 #5 Share Posted March 22, 2018 I guess it would be characterized (by some) as a case of this "poor old invalid woman in a scooter" being "set upon" by the young ruthless and mean RCI employee. No "winning" that one. The employees have learned (by experience of their own and fellow employees) to carefully and selectively "pick their battles" ....if they want to keep their jobs. Snit13 Posted March 22, 2018 #6 Share Posted March 22, 2018 I would have confronted her. No excuse for smoking in a no smoking area and then putting butts on the floor. OP should have told employee he/she witnessed the woman smoking. If she was smoking there she most likely was smoking in her cabin too. Not fair to next cruiser to occupy that cabin especially if they have lung/allergy issues. Agree she should have been put off ship and charged cleaning fees too. BND Posted March 22, 2018 #11 Share Posted March 22, 2018 More importantly... when did they change the Cupcake Cupboard to Kate Spade ;)?? I think it's been a couple of years. Cupcakes are now in the ice cream shop, Sprinkles on the boardwalk. They sell them and hold the decorating classes there.

I agree with reporting it to the crew as a witness, and maybe even using a cell phone to video the transgression. But I don’t believe guests are in the position, to enforce ship’s rules on behalf of the Captain.

It's about being a witness to a violation and either informing the offender of the offense, in a compassionate attempt to keep him or her from getting in trouble, or backing up a crew member when the crew member enforces the policy. CruisingNole Posted March 22, 2018 #16 Share Posted March 22, 2018 (edited) In a scooter and smoking. Probably unhealthy. Great combo. This is the type of creature that complains about anything and everything and thinks the world revolves around her. If I would have observed that, I'd have picked up the butt, handed it to her and say "I think you dropped something." If she refused to take it, hopefully she'd have a beverage in her cupholder for me to drop the butt into myself. Edited March 22, 2018 by CruisingNole Changed to "probably unhealthy." CruisingNole Posted March 22, 2018 #18 Share Posted March 22, 2018 Ohh yeah the CC police in full swing....just shoot her and be done with it! Oh I'd have no problem policing that slob. I used to be a smoker, quit 10 years ago. Disgusting habit that I'm ashamed I ever picked up. I'd only smoke in designated areas and when finished, I'd extinguish the butt, put it in my pocket, and throw it away into the next garbage can I saw. I'd never litter the ground with a butt, and I especially would never smoke in a non-smoking area. There's absolutely no excuse for that type of behavior. Does that mean you think people who have mobility problems are probably obese? Or is it smokers who are? I’m confused. Sympathetic to the crew as it is a no-win situation for them, given that the woman is in a scooter.

I’m confused. Sent from my iPhone using Forums Someone with mobility issues that chooses to smoke does not care whatsoever about their health. So you're correct, equating obesity to that is an unfair judgement for me to pass. I recant my previous statement and will say that person is "probably unhealthy." SmoothFlying Posted March 22, 2018 #23 Share Posted March 22, 2018 Well, she certainly can't claim she didn't know about the no smoking rules. And while it is difficult for her to take the elevator to the smoking area (which I ASSUME is topside aft, we did the Oasis in 2010, but I don't smoke and the wife only did in the casino) I certainly HOPE if the crewmember had an witness and both went to a ship's officer SOMETING would have been done, i.e.- warnings or even fines for the offender, without any punishment for the crewmember. After all, others who do smoke find the proper areas OR don't smoke at all. THEY follow the rules, even if they don't like them. As I said before, I never have smoked and a whiff doesn't bother me BUT that's no the point, the offender broke the policy, because she thought either a) she'd never be caught and after all, she's above such 'petty rules' OR b) Darn the rules, she's paid for this cruise, if others who are offended by her actions, too BAD ! That's their problem. Sad that those smokers don't realize that people who don't like the smell ALSO paid for NOT having smoke around them or smell it. CruisingNole Posted March 22, 2018 #25 Share Posted March 22, 2018 Gotta love the CC vigilantes. Only they are capable of enforcing ship rules. It's called decency. Ship or no ship, If I was in an enclosed public space and observed someone blowing smoke, especially if it were in the vicinity of my child or pregnant wife, and then stomp out the butt on the ground, you better believe I'm going to say something.
