Carnival's experiment with a non-smoking ship was a failure because not only did smokers refuse to book, they also lost all families that had a smoker, as well as any groups that had a smoker. Added all together, it was a huge loss to the bottom line as far as that ship was concerned.

The other thing that doomed the experiment was that the ship dud the same itinerary over and over, so even thise who did want to sail on it got tired of the same thing.  I also had heard it was hard to get crew to work on the ship as many if them were smokers.

 

I do believe if it was tried today, taking the lessons learned from that ship, it would be much more successful.  However as long as smoking stays to designated areas I am fine with it.

As long as the ship is eliminating all smokers, family of smokers, their friends and most groups, it is going to be hard to full the ship.

I cannot believe how kind  and respectful everyone is on this thread.  I usually stay out of the smoking threads because they are so vicious and nasty.....and again, as a non-smoker, I  have no problem with sharing the ship as long as smokers abide by the rules.  😁

I was thinking the exact same thing (how kind/respectful everyone is) and it's refreshing to see. 

 

To answer the OP's question, it's because of past threads related to smoking where I'm thinking the results of the survey may not be accurate.  The reason is because those who would chose "B" might be leery of answering in order to avoid "poking a hornets' nest", so to speak.  Both my DH and I are former smokers, but when we did smoke we preferred the designated areas on outside decks of the ship.  We also had no respect for other smokers who didn't follow the rules because they tend to give ALL smokers a bad reputation.  But seeing how civil this thread is, I feel safe enough to give my answer, "B".

I don't care either way. I don't mind it being allowed, frankly, as long as it's outside or in designated indoor areas. I'm not a big fan of allowing it in the casino, at least if the casino is a space you have to pass through (if the casino isn't between other places on the ship, then it doesn't matter). Or maybe ships should wall off (with glass) part of the casino for that, making everyone happy?

 

As noted by others, it's unlikely to ever go anywhere unless/until the smoking rate drops very low. I was surprised by how many people in Germany still smoke, and my recent 2-day from Hamburg was full of it. As a former smoker myself, I know that if smoking isn't an option, then smokers basically just won't go, and there are still enough people to make it worthwhile (plus, as others have noted, those people's non-smoking families and friends).

I’m going to whinge a little and everyone can judge me if they want.  We’re on a Celebrity ship, and smoking is allowed on one side of the Promenade deck.  I like to watch the ship dock, the ropes being attached and the gangway being set up.  The Promenade deck is a good place to do that, especially if it’s raining.  I was leaning against the rail yesterday, watching, and smokers holding cigarettes kept popping up beside me.  I didn’t cough, fan the air or say anything, since they were in their proper smoking area and I was the invader, (I wouldn’t anyway) but it made watching a lot less fun.  Every time I found a clear place to stand, another one appeared beside me.

B, as a former smoker who now uses an electronic (cannot stand the smell of smoke anymore) I can tell you that it is an addiction. Some individuals cannot go 5,7,14 days without a fix much less even an hour, while some can quit cold turkey without any issues. I personally need my nicotine. I would much rather have a place outside that interferes with as few people as possible than deal with all the grumpy individuals that cannot get their fix.  

 

And yes, even though I cannot stand the smell of smoke I will be out in the designated area with the smokers because that is the rule for electronics. I personally think it is the rule breakers who give all of us a bad image.

In the unlikely event option A was readily available we would go for the No Smoking, however the designated outdoor area is a huge improvement on the old days.

What is the point of option A? Who is being bothered by outside smoke? Now I can certainly understand not wanting smoking in the casino or other indoor areas, but stopping it outside too is excessive.

 

Personally, I enjoy a cigar here and there. I smoke it outside in the designated area. Who am I bothering?

"Similar" but not identical?  I'd have to know the itineraries/costs for each.  That's more important to me.  Smoking onboard not a real issue to me.  Although I'd prefer not be in the vicinity of smoking.

I remember when Celebrity rolled out their strict restrictions on smoking. They were one of the first, if not the first, mass market line to ban smoking in all inside areas of their ships. The howling from the smokers, who clearly thought they were smarter than everyone else, predicted severe financial problems from that decision, claiming that bookings would drop so low that the policy would soon be abandoned to avoid going bankrupt. 

 

Instead, Celebrity saw in surge in bookings, mostly from people who were thrilled with those restrictive smoking policies. Their ships sold out so fast it was nearly impossible to book cruises near and after final payment time. They leveraged that surge in bookings into five brand new, award winning ships, all of which continued the policy the smokers claimed would be the end of Celebrity. It was a success story. And almost all mass market lines have now copied those policies. 

 

Moral of this story: nay-sayers are often 100% wrong.

The only way to get to A is if every cruise line banned smoking and implemented an automatic disembarkation at the next stop for anyone caught lighting up.  Maybe one day.

If everything else was absolutely equal I would choose A. However, the current situation doesn't bother me enough to want to pay extra for a 100% smoke-free environment.

One reason the Carnival Paradise failed was that it was stuck doing the same itineraries over and over. People like to go to new places.

B. I am a non smoker. It is not difficult to avoid the outside smoking areas if it bothers you that much. It doesn’t bother me at all.

But I would pick the best ship and ports, then put up with outside limited smoking areas. Just like now.

 

I have sever asthma and smoke of any kind is a irritant to my lungs but so is perfume. My worst asthma attacks on ships have happened after being trapped in a elevator with someone (generally little old ladies) who bathed in perfume.  Not walking by people following the rules and smoking in the correct sections.
