What’s the rudest thing you’ve ever had done to you on a cruise?

I was on a Princess cruise years back. There was an elderly woman dressed in sparkly red white and blue who rode a scooter similarly festooned. She used her scooter as a battering ram to get to her targeted food in the buffet. She had no regard for others as she would gleefully run over others feet or just outright run into them. A man in front of me got both and chastised her to which he got the finger as she merrily scooted on her way to her next victim. As I joined my wife at our table a guy in line with me sat down at an adjacent table and said to me, "If you think that's bad you should see her in action if you are sitting at her favorite slot machine!" She was a veteran of many Princess cruises and apparently the crew were loath to take action against her. This was a dozen years ago and she may well be bowling over people in that great cruise ship in the sky.

Heavens no! She has an express on the down elevator reserved.

I'm hard pressed to come up with something really rude that happened to me beyond the normal stupid human tricks like line cutting, poor elevator etiquette, and overall boorish behavior we all experience on cruises.  I guess the worst was an Italian lady on one of my Med cruises who really wanted the table DW and I were sitting at in the buffet...enough so to cause a commotion to the point security had to respond.  We were mid-meal so to this day, I still don't understand her problem.

However, on the evening before debarkation of my one and only Carnival cruise, I heard some commotion in the hallway.  I looked out to learn someone had urinated on my neighbors luggage.  The good news is, they caught the miscreants after reviewing the cameras, but those poor folks still had to deal with their luggage being soaked in urine.

I joined the Eurodam for a repo cruise up from San Diego.  It was a continuation of a longer cruise.  Some weren't happy that this "interloper" got on their ship.  Apparently they had gotten familiar with everyone and had their special tables, chairs, etc. and would glare if one of us dared to take an unmarked space that they had been using for their cruise.  One woman in a gaggle of women made sure to say loud enough for me to hear "these repo cruisers are just ruining it for us."

I havn't sailed HAL in a few years, but their loyalists  always did have a very large membership in the "Old Biiddy Committee" .

It's even obvious on the HAL board here.

I picture so many of the posters sitting at a computer frowning with lips pursed typing away about dress code, or whatever has them riled up at a given moment.

Weirdest & rudest thing ever done to me was last Jan. on the Oceania Riviera. My spouse Richard & I had just finished breakfast & were looking over the just posted lunch menu. This guy & his wife came over to us & here's the exchange. First he puts his hands on my stomach & exclaims "Wow! You must be having twins!" His next response is  "You must go through an awful lot of toilet paper from eating so much!" Ok, I'm 5-9 & weigh in at about 220LB. Not thin, but there were some much bigger pax than me on board. He was thinner than me but not by much. He came very close to a punch in the mouth for putting his hands on me. Normally, I always can come up with a very good(and nasty, if it has to be)come back, from years of watching Don Rickles & other  comedians, but I was just too floored to say much. I finally told him if comes near me again, he'll wake up in the infirmary. Saw him one more time the next day & as he seemed to be approaching, I gave him a look, that gave him pause. We never saw him after that. Just weird.

I'm not sure if it is purposefully rude, or people not realizing, but I've had numerous people reach around me for things in the buffet line.  And I know I'm not alone.

I've elbowed a few stomachs when pax try that. It gets the message across real quick.

I use a walker.  On my trip on the Epic years ago a gentleman about ran me over to get in the elevator. I was waiting to go in so those on the elevator could get off.  I kept hearing on the boards about this but I had never had a problem.  It’s the only time it happened to me in all my cruises.

I've noticed that on the Riviera, pax just rush the elevator before anyone could get off. I've come up with a good one for all of you who experience this: If it happens, say very loudly: "We just hit the iceberg. There's plenty of time to get to the lifeboats & for you gents, plenty of time to get into your wives' clothing to make sure you're first in line!" For those of us in the elevator, it always gets a great laugh!

If you had thought fast which we never do, you could have whipped out your cell phone and reported him to security.

Qualifying for membership in the Committee requires a state of mind and an attitude, not an age.

I’ve seen Old Biddies who are young in years, as well as octogenarians who are very cool chicks.  😁

DON

I never carry the phone with me on board. It stays in the room except for photos, though that would have been an excellent thought.

That is so shockingly rude I think I might have started looking for the hidden camera.  Sadly, it is absolutely incredible what some people will do or say.

Thanks.  I was ok.  I was on a private island and the woman was not paying attention while driving her scooter.  She was driving with one hand.  The other had some kind of island concoction in a large souvinier sippy cup.

@david_sobe By "stuff" I meant the clothing we had left draped over the chairs to hold our table.  NOT food.   Sorry I didn't make that clear.  I'd find someone dumping food on the floor difficult to believe also!!!

RE: "NCL does not allow emotional support animals to board."  Really???  Sorry, but may be the "official" NCL policy but in the case I cited the people in question were carrying the dog at times & then letting it run free on a leash; we saw them around the ship on several different occasions.  This was NOT a "a certified animal for the disabled that is highly trained".  It was a dog on a leash and it "did its business" on the floor in the casino.  Period.  Last time I checked that's "rude" behavior in that the animal was obviously not housebroken.  You weren't there watching it happen.  I was.  So sorry, "Doubting Thomas".

This is one of the things that I find annoying also, these people with their dogs.  I might try and clear things up a bit for you.   First thing you have to understand is there is a big difference between Emotional Support Animals and Service Animals.    Many of the Cruise lines I believe late last year did in fact pass rules which will eventually hopefully limit these ESA dogs.  When they passed those rules they also did grandfather in those people who already had reservations.

The big problem with these animals is we are not privy as to what the owners are claiming these dogs to be.   The Cruise Lines basically follow the ADA and some of the provisions of it get in the way of truth.   If someone says this dog is a service dog, the cruise lines are not allowed by law to ask for proof that it is a service dog.   They are allowed to ask two questions,   is this a service animal and what service does it provide.    The only real way to restrict these animals is once they are on board and exhibit obvious behaviors like pooping,  acting up, failure to follow orders.    Then the cruise lines have the ability to act.

Should also add into this that some leeway I believe is given to very, very frequent cruisers and people with lots of stock in the company.

Also, just as an FYI there is no such thing as a certified service animal,  the federal government does not keep a registry.

Here is a link to US Justice Policy on Service Animals, its very interesting.   Please note also that PTSD dogs are not considered Service Animals unless they perform a specific task.

There are some posts about people in electric wheel chairs being rude at times and this is absolutely true.   I have in the past couple of years had to use one of them at different stores on occasion and I can assure you that for every story about rudeness with the chairs I can tell you stories about people being rude around the chairs.   Worst are parents who don't control their kids but many adults are just as bad.

Smokers who polluted the air that I breathe.  Fortunately those days are pretty much gone.  Most folks today at least recognize that smoking is no longer socially acceptable.

I was in line for a restaurant a few years ago. I am 5 foot 6 and at the time weighed 145 pounds. I remarked to

my husband that I hoped we would be seated soon because I was starving. A man in front of me said "that's funny

you don't look like you are starving"....Yes I know I technically was not starving but I thought that was extremely rude

of him to insult me.

Emotional support dogs?  There’s a website you can go to, pay about $200 and get a letter from a local doctor saying “I’ve prescribed an emotional support dog for John Doe”.  That’s an utter insult to true service animals and the people who NEED them, rather than the guys who want to have their dog in an apartment that doesn’t take pets, or who want to bring their dog along on vacation because they don’t have anywhere else to leave them or don’t want to pay for a kennel.

Not really something rude "done to you".  Smoking, while disgusting, is allowed onboard ships.

Once again Emotional Support Dogs and Service animals are totally different things under separate laws.

Since you started your answer with the words "it's a tie," I guess that means that if the person eating apologized for sitting in a seat that was reserved and got up and walked around and around, looking for somewhere else to sit, and he/she finally found an empty seat and sat down, only to be told again that his/her seat was being saved for a friend, he/she would have to get up again and look for another empty seat, and upon finding one, sat down, only to be told again that the seat was being saved for a friend,  and finally said, "I don't care - I'm sitting here," you would think that he/she was being rude, although not as rude as the seat-savers.  So what should that person do to avoid being rude?  Keep walking around and around (carrying his/her food)?  How many times would that person have to be shooed away from an empty seat to have the right to say, "I don't care - I'm sitting here" without being rude?

I answered a question asked about 1 situation. You added additional factors/changed the situation and then made assumptions. Don't want to play the "what if" game.

Saving more than one seat for a theater or comedy show is very rude.  On my last cruise, I watched a comedy show with my husband.  When it ended, there was an announcement that if people wanted to stay for the next show they did not have to leave the room and return.  I saw better seats, so my husband and I sat down at the same time a lady sat down two seats away.  She quickly said that she was saving three additional seats, two of which were now occupied by me and my husband.  So, we moved back to our original seats.

The lady then got up and walked away.  We waited for about five minutes and noticed that the lady was nowhere to be seen, so we assumed she left.  There were no personal items on the chairs saving them, so we moved to two of those seats.  She came back about a minute later and said that she was still saving the seats.  So, we moved again.  That's the first time I have ever seen someone save seats, wander around, then come back and reclaim seats that had no personal items on them.  Some people are very selfish and only think about themselves and not how their behavior is rude to others, especially to groups who have the decency to arrive together for a show and not send someone up 1/2 hour ahead of time to save a bunch of seats.

@dkjretired Thanks for the info!  Believe me, I know the difference between a "real" service animal and an "emotional support" one.  We had a blind kid in the college I attended & we all learned VERY quickly not to bother "Butch" (his German Shepherd service dog) when Butch was "on duty".  Weird I can't remember the kid's name but I remember distinctly the name of his service dog...

On the same subject some "genius" tried to bring a "service peacock" aboard a United Airlines flight out of EWR.  Apparently this person had tried on several occasions to do this & United kept telling the person "No".

Good for United, in the US Justice Department bulletin that I gave a link to in an earlier post, the Justice DEpt. states the only legitimate service animals are dogs and in some cases miniature horses.

After I retired I was working in a supermarket and a woman came in with a "service Parakeet"   perched on her shoulder.   I asked the store manager and he told me it helped her with balance issues.    He obviously didn't know the rules on service animals, just thought he had to let her in the store.
