Princess Cruises can confirm that the first phase of health assessment of all guests and crew aboard Diamond Princess, conducted by the Japanese Ministry of Health, has been completed. We were notified that among the samples that completed the tests, 10 people tested positive for Coronavirus. This includes two Australian guests, three Japanese guests, three Hong Kong guests and one U.S. guest, plus one member of the Filipino crew.

These 10 people, who have been notified, will be brought ashore by the Japanese Coast Guard vessel and transported to local hospitals to be served by Japanese medical professionals on the coast. It has been confirmed that the ship will remain quarantined in Yokohama. The duration of the quarantine shall be at least 14 days as required by the Ministry of Health.

The ship plans to go out to sea for normal marine operations including, but not limited to, freshwater production and ballast operations before continuing alongside Yokohama, where food, supplies and other supplies will be carried on board.

Guests will continue to receive internet and complimentary phone to use in order to stay in touch with their relatives and loved ones, and the ship's crew is working to keep all guests comfortable.

Princess Cruises will continue to cooperate fully and on instructions from global medical authorities and the Japanese government.

We will also cancel the next two Diamond Princess cruises departing from Yokohama (Feb 4 and Feb 1 2) and begin notifying guests today.

Princess Cruises confirms that there are 2,666 guests and 1,045 crew currently on board covering a range of nationalities. About half of the passengers on board are from Japan.

Just watched that video.  Definitely alarming.  That poor man, I hope things get better for him very soon.

 

Update - He did get some food, so that's a relief.

We just had dinner with our travel companions for our June trip to Alaska. We agreed to not make a rash decision and will give it a few more weeks before making a decision on canceling.  But after reading some of the posts on the Princess board it does give me more reason to be concerned.

I am hoping that the cruise lines will step up the pre-boarding screening of guests at check in for all cruises, including  testing for non-symptomatic passengers.

 

Screening at embarkation would be less expensive in the long run that having a full ship quarantine. 

 

How many times have any of us boarded a ship with people hacking, sneezing or otherwise obviously sick and had to put up with other passengers that were ill and out and about spreading their germs?

 

I gave kudos to the ship's physician on the Rotterdam a few years ago, that when someone came on board with bacterial pneumonia and went to the MDR for a boarding lunch and later went to the ship's doctor when we were safely out to sea, properly quarantined him.

 

As passengers and crew in the MDR for that lunch started to become ill over the next few days, they were also quarantined (onset was with a high fever and other URI symptoms that many went to the doctor on their own).

 

At that point, anyone on the ship that started to exhibit any signs of a respiratory infection was discreetly asked (escorted) to the medical office  for an examination, treatment (antibiotics if bacterial) and quarantined.

 

This prompt action at within the first four days of a 14 night cruise  nipped what could have been a nightmare cruise experience for many.

 

And it was discreetly done. I would not have known of the problem if a woman who joined us for trivia on the first full day (sea day) of the cruise mentioned she wasn't feeling well. She didn't rejoin us for trivia for  four days, and when she did, she explained that because of developing a fever and respiratory involvement, she went to the ship's doctor the evening of the first full day where she was promptly diagnosed and quarantined.

The second ship is the World Dream, which was designed for the Asian cruise market. It is currently at Hong Kong.

 

The Diamond Princess is quarantined off Yokohama.

Thanks.  The ship was identified this morning when I saw the news.  

Seeing an updated report now and the strange thing is that while the Yokohama passengers on the Diamond Princess are restricted to their cabins (not allowed on their balconies), the video on CBC shows the World Dream passengers at Hong Kong on their balconies.  

Either way, it will be a long 14 days for these passengers.

 

Passengers are potentially facing a diet of instant noodles according to a report I just heard.

Me, too.  I always think of the practical problems, like laundering and changing towels out, things like that.  It's just a very daunting situation.

Some are very concerned about the effects on any Inside cabin solo passengers effectively in solitary confinement.

Couldn't they prop open the door?  I can't imagine germs flying too far just by doing that.  Seems like it would really help, psychologically.

Diamond Princess passengers are reporting that cabin doors must remain closed.  A knock on door signals that a hazmat suited crew member has delivered your food.  BTW, no smoking and no alcohol delivery to cabins.

 

It's an interesting thread to read...

Okay, let's not go completely overboard here...  

 

I am a solo traveling in an inside cabin on HAL Westerdam April cruise around Japan. I'm a little concerned about the situation but not panicking, and if I had to deal with two weeks of confinement, I could think of a number of worse places.

 

Besides, passengers are being given internet and phone access -- you can talk to family members, friends, etc. I always travel with a fully loaded Kindle. And aren't there movies on TV? 

 

Heck I could probably work indefinitely from a cabin, given a reasonable internet connection and be fine. I rarely step outside my office or see the sun on every work day of the week at home. (And when I get home I am the one who has to make the food, clean up, do laundry, etc.)

 

Some people let their fears run away with them.

 

(Now of course I might miss that barrel chair that Princess took away from every cabin below mini-suite level.....:classic_sad:.  At least that is not the case on HAL.)

No alcohol delivery to cabins?  Wow.  The least they could do is make it somewhat pleasant.  

 

Somewhere I saw a post that at least there is Pinot noir on board for drinking.

I think I could manage the solitude, but no outside view or fresh air would be difficult for me.

 

I hope there aren't people traveling with kids. Yes, there's TV and internet, but kids are going to get cabin fever big time.
