So my bank only gives out $20s in their ATMs, and I am wondering if I can break those $20s into $5s, $1s etc. for tipping purposes. Can I do this onboard? Thanks

You should probably get that taken care of before you arrive.

I have had issues with getting smaller bills on ships in the past.

Personally I bring $200 in singles, then  $200 in 5 & 10's.

Never had an issue in over 40 cruises.

Sometimes they will limit how much they will give you.  They can be borderline nasty about it at times.  So instead of taking $60 and asking for fives and ones, go one day with a single $20 and ask for fives.  Go a different time - and to a different person - and ask for a ten and ten ones for a $20.    More work for you?  Sure.  But they are often under orders NOT to give a lot of small bills.

Or after visiting the ATM at home, walk in the branch and ask the teller to break it down to the amount of ones you want.

Usually the point is NOT to carry a lot of extra bills.  A few large bills are much easier to carry than a big stack of ones.

Perhaps for you but NOT for me, I like using the easy button before my vacation, I.e. if I can get it done now, why wait.  Much easier than traversing all over the ship to break a $20, and $1’s don’t really weigh that much.

You do you, I'll do me.  🙂

I travel with large bills, and break them down as needed.  On some ships there is a machine in the casino that does it - that's a REAL find.  🙂

Please state where you got the info about being "under orders" not to give small bills.  We've never experienced anything of this sort.  Maybe the "borderline nasty" is a result of your attitude?

This is exactly what happened to me.

One instince they just said no,  come back later, and limited to small amount.

Now I just take care of it before..

I am not afraid to walk around with stacks of bills....

This is probably the best, most efficient way possible.

I need to try it...

Don't waste your time going to the ATM then a teller inside, just go inside to begin with.

I thought the person was making a joke.

But knowing people on this page,

It is possible that he could really be serious.......

How’s your back? When you put your wallet with all those bills in your pocket, it must be like sitting on a brick.

More efficient is to skip the atm and just withdraw the amount you want, in the denominations you want from the teller. Going to the atm is just a wasted extra step.
