The Fleet Report and Daily for Thursday June 6th, 2024

Recommended Posts

Good morning, thanks for the Fleet Report and Daily!  Honouring all who took part in D Day 80 years ago; I watched some of the ceremonies and they were very touching.  My DH was a creative educator, creating new curriculums for the province in both social studies and science.  After seeing @0106's description of creative educators, it wasn't what I thought it was. LOL  Anyone who gardens knows it certainly is exercise, and sadly we don't have any drive-in theatres around here any longer.

BWDDay.jpg.5cd93b250b59675cdaf3c6d2872ff2d9.jpg

The clouds have cleared, the wind has calmed somewhat, but I still see the trees in the back swaying back and forth, so it's still windy.  We didn't have near the bad winds that were prevalent in the south part of the province yesterday - they had gusts up to 96km/h (60mph) that ripped out trees and tore shingles off roofs.  We have a huge number of pine cones strewn across the lawns again, so I'll be out there with a rake and shovel picking them up and putting them into the green bin.

@Seasick Sailorget thee to a doctor, girl !!!!!!!!

@ottahand7I hope the tens unit helps you - our neighbour has one for her back and says she really likes it.  Hearing pings on the fish finder is a good sign!

@Cruzin Terriyou don't seem to have any luck at all, with flights, buses, and hotels.  Hope your DH is feeling somewhat better today.

Several things happening today - first thing is getting some groceries, then DH has a chiropractor appointment at 12:15.  At 1:30 a couple of fellows from the astronomical society are coming over to pick up the telescopes we have from our friend Gord's estate.   Ollie (his wife) wants to be here when they get them, as she would like to speak with them and tell them a bit about Gord's passion for the stars.  After that we have to head over to the hardware store to pick up long screws, as this weekend DH's son and our son-in-law will be coming over to repair/replace the steps leading off the deck to the patio.

I'd like to try the drink of the day, would enjoy the wine, and like today's menu suggestion, although I've never cooked with leeks.  After all that running around, I think we're going to have something simple like grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup on the deck tonight.  And wine.

Prayers for everyone who is in need, in pain, in grief, and in that paths of destructive storms and wars.  Cheers to all with celebrations.

Smooth Sailing!  ☺️☺️☺️

Our pasta cooking class was fantastic at a beautiful venue with fantastic grounds and surreal scenery.

Would love to just visit there and enjoy one of their ten guest accommodations.

Happy Hump Day.  Thank you Rich, Vanessa, Debbie, Ann, and Dixie.   I’ll celebrate all 3 of today’s days although will not garden.  There is just one Drive-in in my area although it’s on the far side of town.  There was another close to the place I worked here but it closed many years ago.  One right across the highway from the mobile home park where my mom lived for over 20 years ago is still going strong.

The quote sounds like a classic to me...

I visited Tracy arm via catamaran from the Volendam in 2018..

A special celebration of the heroism of the 160,000 Allied heroes who risked (and so many gave) thier all to protect our liberty.

I’ll pass on the meal.  My alternative is Iced Melon Bisque, Orange and Radiccio Salad, and Chicken Kiev as served on MS Prinsendam on June 6, 2015.

It’s starting quiet this morning but WOW!  on last night.  At one time the weather guy on my usual station was juggling seven potential tornado cells at a time.  One came close to me and my cell phone alert went off but it finally passed about 3 miles south of me without touching down.  A lot of damage in the metro area but only a few twigs where I am...

I'd like a frittata with asparagus and leek, but would substitute something else for the ricotta, which is very high in lactose. A Negroni would be OK, too; I have gin but no Campari or red vermouth. A German pinot noir should be very like one grown in the Finger Lakes. For a sustainably grown one, I might look to Silver Thread Vineyard for its 2022: "Reminiscent of a Bourgogne Rouge but with a Finger Lakes stamp of origin, this terroir-driven Pinot Noir has aromas of plums, cherries, forest floor, wet stone and dried herbs.  It is delicate in color, yet displays focused intensity and complexity on the palate.  Its long finish shows vanilla, caramel, red fruit and minerals from the shale-heavy soil of our vineyard," $32.

I visited Tracy Arm Inlet in 2021 as a day trip from Juneau with Adventure Bound.

We will be there in August with another couple docking in Oceankaj.  I have explored public transportation (~5US pp one way) options and the cost of a taxi (~40US one way) to Nyhavn where we would like to begin our day with a canal cruise.

I embarked from Oceankaj in 2022. From there, if you have time, it's easy to take the 25 bus to Orientkaj and the Metro to Kongens Nytorv. If you want to get to Nyhavn from the Kongens Nytorv station, it's a 10-minute walk, but the most practical way to find the route and pay the fare is with the Danish DOT phone app, which a passenger on a day call probably wouldn't have. IIRC, you can install the phone app anywhere but you might have to be in Denmark to set up the payment method.

Good morning Dailyites

I was the first in line this morning at the clinic. The wound is infected. Doc cut away the shaggy skin and irrigated. Found little bits of debris. All wrapped up now and waiting to have blood work. Thank you for thinking of me.

Good morning. Sunny and dry today. Current temp is 59 with high of 93F expected. Very hot for Durango in June but it is supposed to moderate a bit after tomorrow. We need rain.

I was supposed to meet a friend for breakfast this morning, but she has pulled a back muscle, during PT yesterday so it will be cold cereal and coffee for me this morning. Need to do a bank run and then work on the condo finances and, of course, more sorting and hopefully more tossing. For some reason I just can not get into the swing of things.

No wildlife when dogs and I walked this morning, but I heard some frantic barking outside when I was getting dressed, so I think something was out there earlier.

Take care all. @Seasick Sailorglad you have had that ankle looked at. @Cruzin TerriHope your trip goes better as the day goes on. @rafinmdThat is unusual weather for Maryland and I am sure everyone could do without it. Have not heard from my Sister, but I know she would not have been happy.

The last film I saw at a drive in was Blazing Saddles with a friend back in 1979.  She insisted that we leave when they got to the beans and the farting.  It was part of a double feature, the first film was Heros.  Listed as a Drama/Comedy.  Too close to having lost friends in Vietnam to think of it as a comedy.

When we spent our summer on Cape Cod we would always go to the drive ins. I was at the age of losing teeth, so I lost a tooth during Bonnie and Clyde.

I thought drive in's would make a come back during Covid, but no...that would have made sense, guess all the speakers would have had to be replaced. (originals too old)   And then wiped down after each night. Family bubbles in bubbles.

BFF emailed me yesterday, he was going to go see our mutual friend before it was too late, and he got a call, that the person he had been attending  church meetings with has Covid, and to not travel.  So trip was cancelled.

I saw on the news about the tornadoes in Maryland, glad to read so far, that all of you are safe.

Joy, keep at it!
Nancy, Hope you find relief.
Annie, glad to hear some encouragement.
Terri, hoping today is calm.

Ann, smooth travels for Pat.

Roy, good tests!

Good sunny morning from central Texas.  We have a sunny morning with beautiful, clear blue skies.  It is 75F and feels like 75F even though the humidity is 84% with a dew point of 70F.  Our predicted high is 94F, and we'll be in the 90s through Sunday,  There is not much on the agenda today for a change.

Today I'll honor all the brave men who landed on the Normandy Beaches 80 years ago.

Creative Educators is an interesting day, and thank you, Tina, @0106 for the information about this organization.  I'll save my gardening exercise for Saturday when I do the mowing and trimming in the yard.  Drive-in movies were always fun, and there are still a few drive-in theaters left.

Today's quote is one I've heard all my life.

I'd like the meal if someone else prepared it.  We'll skip the drink, but would try the wine if we could find it.

We've visited Tracy Arm many times when doing the 14 day roundtrip out of Seattle.

The beginning of Operation Overlord began the liberation of Europe from the Axis Powers.

@cat shepard  Ann, thank you for posting DDE's letter to the troops.

@Haljo1935  Elizabeth, I'm sorry the shot hurt, but I hope that it along with PT and OT will keep you from having surgery.

@ottahand7  Nancy, I'm glad your back is feeling better, but please be careful when you are gardening.  Glad you hand pings on the fish finder.

@Cruzin Terri  Terri, I'm sorry the all inclusive is not as nice as you'd hoped.  Still, I hope you and your DH can relax and enjoy a time away from home.  I hope his leg is healing well.

@marshhawk  Annie, thank you for the update from the visit with the new doctor.  I'm glad you found one who listens and understands the need to include you in the discussions and decisions.  I hope they will be able to help DH.  It sounds like all the cats hand a great adventure yesterday.

@ger_77  Gerry, I'm glad you were spared all the damage other areas had.

@rafinmd  Roy, I'm glad you were spared from the tornado cells.  When we lived in DE, PA and NJ, I remember thunderstorms but no tornadoes.

@aliaschief  Thanks for the beautiful pictures, Bruce.

@dfish  Debbie, leeks are not difficult to cook with, but they need to be thoroughly washed since they can hide a lot of dirt.

@Seasick Sailor  Joy, I'm glad you saw a doctor about your foot and that they cleaned it out.  I hope it heals quickly now.  Did they give you a tetanus shot?  With all the debris in the wound, if yours is not current, you might think about getting one just to be on the safe side.

Today,  instead of memes, I have a few pictures from the area near Omaha Beach.

Whenever we've been in Cherbourg, we've rented cars and visited the D-Day beaches and the American Cemetery.  We were at the 60th anniversary ceremony in 2004 and saw a ceremony with French Navy sailors on June 4, 2011.  There is a small museum in Colleville-sur-Mer dedicated to the First Division, The Big Red One.  Colleville-sur-Mer was their objective on D-Day.

The ceremony on June 4, 2011, two days before the D-Day anniversary.

Captain Joseph Turner Dawson single handedly took out a machine gun nest with a good throw of a grenade.  He was one of the first officers off Omaha Beach and led his men up a ravine that was named Dawson's Draw.  He was wounded in the leg on D-Day, but recovered and fought with his men through the battle for Aachen, where his company held off the Germans for 39 days on a ridge.  The ridge became known as Dawson's Ridge, and is still called that by the U. S. Army.

Thank you Rich, thank you Debbie, thank you Vanessa, thank you Ann, and thank you Dixie for all your work.  And thank you everyone for being here!

I have attached my memorabilia of my father's participation on D-Day. He was not in the first wave (Thank God!) but went in after the beach had been secured. He fought across Europe until being wounded during the Battle of the Bulge. That ended his frontline participation and finished the War in support roles. The doctor actually saved for him the piece of shrapnel that he was wounded with from a German artillery round. It entered the middle of his back and lodged in his left shoulder. I remember that he received a disability check from the Government monthly because of it.

Back in the early Seventies I had a plaque made for him to display his medals that he had received. He also had the "clicker" that was issued for identification purposes on the battlefield. Many a time I paged through the book that was compiled to show the history of his 3rd Armored Division.

I still miss him 32 years later!

Stay Safe, and prayers for those in need.

- Jack

We are finally heading to our Canada cottage. We had to delay the trip in order to attend a memorial service for our neighbor's daughter. She passed while we were on our April/May cruise due to complications from pancreatitis at 44. Very Sad.

So my inconsistent postings may be even more inconsistent due to our travels.

This is what I posted on April 28, 2021.

These pictures were taken in 2012 on the Amsterdam when we did b2b2bs, and in 2018 on the Zaandam when we did b2b2b2bs.

Your go to Alaska and you see The World.

As we were approaching the glacier, which I believe was North Sawyer, we saw two people camping.  On the next visit two weeks later, the campsite was gone. Captain Mercer told us they were doing a survey on the area.

While we were sailing through Tracy Arm in 2012, we were on the little deck behind the Main Deck, and we had a stowaway.  Someone told us it was a stormy petrel.  After resting a while, he/she flew away.

Such a significant day in history!  Thank you @0106 for the explanation of Creative Educators, I won't be doing gardening exercises and I remember going to drive-in movies in high school.  Funny quote, I will pass on the frittata (how does it differ from a quiche?), I tried a Negroni when I dined in the Pinnacle Grill last cruise and I liked it, no to the wine and I haven't been to Tracy Arm.

IMG_7896.JPG.88a9a8820db8b3fddb3eab66963f8d13.JPG

Well today it will be blazin' hot and we are under an Excessive Heat Warning until tomorrow at 8pm.  We won't be as hot as Phoenix but then whats the difference between 106F and 111F ???!!!??? But I do need to go out to the plastic surgeon to look at my torn earring hole and see if she can repair it - and if I want to pay to have it done.  We will see.

I think I overdid it Tuesday as I was "achy" all day (and maybe that is why I didn't sleep that well Tuesday night) so yesterday I chilled most of the day.  The focus group yesterday was VERY interesting; this is the second one I have done about politics/policies.  It is funny how they start discussing one thing and then the discussion morphs into what they are really targeting.  I had to constrain my talking as I could of taken over the conversation - LOL!!  There were only 10 of us - all females - from battleground states.  So interesting.

@Seasick Sailor I am so glad you went to the doc!  I was worried.  Speedy recovery!  @Cruzin Terri I hope your vacation gets better.

I heard about the tornados in the DC area last night and @rafinmd I thought about you and @0106.

@Haljo1935 I haven't had knee injections but both knees have had meniscus tear repair.  Personally, I am glad I did it.

@marshhawk I am glad you have a plan for your DH.  Thoughts and hugs.

I know I have missed someone so I apologize in advance.

That is an awful looking souvenir your father brought back from France.  I know that the government acts slowly, but why did they wait until 1971 to award him his certificate for the Purple Heart Medal?

Good morning. Thanks for the Fleet Report/Daily.

An important day of Remembrance and the sacrifices made, D-Day. I'll salute creative educators. Gardening certainly can be exercise. Drive-in movies were fun; few exist now. Strange quote. I wouldn't mind a fritata, but with different add-ins. Pass on the drink and yes to the wine. I suppose I've been through Tracy Arm Inlet. A highly important day in history. I just finished watching Masters of the Air last night, appropriately, about airmen in WW2.

From my TA last year and visit to La Havre/Normandy.

016-5.5-NormandyAmericanCemeterywithEnglishChannelinbackground.thumb.jpg.a376f930eb8daf3e008178fb4eb23887.jpg

It's cloudy, warm and humid here today. Yesterday I did go to BFF's with supplies, then to my Neurosurgeon. She was very happy that I'm pain free. The incision is healing well. I can start to increase my activity as tolerated, and don't have to go back unless there's an issue. I did get a script for PT. I'm also going to slowly start decreasing my Gabapentin. So a good report! Today I'm battling my GMail - I use the website, and all buttons have disappeared from the top. I can't delete anything. I turned off the VPN, adblocker, cleared the cache, and nothing helps. I can on my phone, but I primarily use online. Ugh.

@StLouisCruisers Thanks for the Tracy Arm photos. I need to revisit Alaska; I've only been once.

@kazu Great sentiments and words.

@Haljo1935 Sorry the knee injection hurt; I've had many and they weren't like that. I hope it and the PT does the trick.

@0106 I'm glad you're ok. I was thinking of my friends who live in Gaithersburg.

@ottahand7 I'm glad your back is feeling better. I hope the TENS unit helps; I got one when I was having all the leg pain.

@Cruzin Terri Good that DH is getting rest, and I hope his leg is feeling better.

@marshhawk I'm glad the new doctor has some ideas to treat DH. It's always good being at a teaching hospital, as they are usually up on newer techniques and treatments. And I'm glad you told them to call on your home phone, so you're in the loop.

@aliaschief That looks like a great thing to do.

@rafinmd I'm glad you were safe from the tornadoes.

@kochleffel Nice photos.

@Seasick Sailor I'm glad you went to the clinic first thing this morning. I hope it starts to improve now; do they want you back to see how it's going?

@Quartzsite Cruiser Thank you for the photos from near Omaha Beach. And the Tracy Arm ones too.

@Heartgrove I appreciate you sharing the memorabilia from your father's participation on D-Day. That's very special and I'm sure you were proud of him.

@Overhead Fred Safe trip to the cabin. Very sad about your neighbor's daughter. Nice garden photos.

Prayers for the Care List and a Toast to those Celebrating.

Good morning Dailyites

I was the first in line this morning at the clinic. The wound is infected. Doc cut away the shaggy skin and irrigated. Found little bits of debris. All wrapped up now and waiting to have blood work. Thank you for thinking of me.

That is an awful looking souvenir your father brought back from France.  I know that the government acts slowly, but why did they wait until 1971 to award him his certificate for the Purple Heart Medal?

I think it was the Army not being very thorough with records post-war. I know my father was very, very reluctant to talk about his War experiences (PTSD before it was recognized?) and may have let it go until then to keep from remembering. I was working in '70-'71 with a man whose hobby was Award and Service Decorations of the Armed Forces. He had provided me with information for my father on who to contact.

My father did not want my brother and I to join the Army which is why we both enlisted in the Coast Guard. I remember one time talking with my brother about CG Basic Training. I mentioned that he didn't warn me how hard it had been. He said that if he had told me - I wouldn't have gone!
