This morning the TODAY show hit RCI pretty hard. They mentioned that RCI said the weather was worse than what had been expected. They then had Al Roaker go over the National Weather Service updates from last week including wind and wave heights and he pretty much called RCI's reasons fo going ahead with the cruise bogus and said they will have to answer for this.

The above is not my opinion. I'm just relaying what they said on TV.

It may be a foreign flagged ship but it is owned by an American Company. They have all the rite in the world to include it in the investigation. The only reason why they register the ship in a foreign country is so that the military can't take control of the ship in a time of war, as they have done in the past.

Uh, no. Actually, if you look at the ship's certificate of registry (title), you will see that each ship is owned by a different company, subsidiary to RCI, and each of these companies are incorporated outside the US. And also, RCI is not incorporated in the US, so it, as parent company, is not a US company, even though its corporate headquarters are there. Haven't you heard all the chat in Congress by Rockefeller about why the cruise lines pay no US taxes?

And as far as the military taking over the ships, first off, no military could use a modern cruise ship for anything other than a vacation for the top brass, and even during WWII, they had to pay the ship owners for the ships taken. Flags of convenience are so the ship does not have to meet US laws, pay US wages, US taxes, pay US registry fees, or meet US safety regulations.

Awesome! Can't wait to hear them wiggle out of putting all of those precious lives in danger!

Our first pax cruise, was on the Oceana SS Doric in Feb 1975. It berthed at the Manhattan wharfs. the itinerary was Bermuda, then the Virgin Islands. This was our first and last cruise out of the Northeast in the winter. We hit one of those storms and had a miserable time on the (todays standards) tiny ship. Since then, we pay casual attention to the Atlantic storms. They are not uncommon. It's the upper air jet stream and the Gulf Stream comingling over the sea. These mini "Perfect Storms" are not uncommon. Cruises out of New York withered in the 70's since it was uncomfortable to take a cruise in the winter and later airfare dropped.

The point of this is mother nature hasn't changed its behavior.

Since Bayonne opened, we have all these dollar eyed cruise executives positioning their ships back to the old routes. Guess what? Rough rides will happen.

My only concern is the technology on the Doric was from the day of Captain Ahab. What gives with the state of the art?

Wow, I thought firstly, this silly thread would be removed by now....secondly that I was done picking my chin up off the floor....NOT.

The constant drivel and rubbish being doled out here never stops.

Why not just call Karina and others who are on this ship and went through it themselves liars and get it over with. Some of you have insulted them in the most heinous and vicious manner possible. Smeared the reputation of a fine master and his staff and the company itself for protecting and taking care of all passengers in the most commendable way...and for what reasons? Just so you can feel important and knowledgeable, which by the way, you are not. You think we can't identify those who are posturing themselves as "experts" when we know someone can say anything on the other side of that screen?

We know who the real experts are, we have read their knowledgeable posts for many years, people who REALLY have been Coast Guardsmen and boat pilots and REALLY have meritime experience.

Yeah, seriously considering whether I really want to contribute any longer to these boards. But some of the posters whom I admire and respect here are worth having to wade through the crap. I'm done with it.

Just called guest services... She said "everything is still closed"... Not sure if she meant because it's only 8:30 or because they wouldn't be opening today!

I'm regretting not booking that 4pm spot on day one that they offered me but I was too set on hanging out in the solarium! :(

I guess Royal must now contract Al to be the official person making decisions. :D But what does he know about limits of how seas actually do their thing? I would think this to be a specialty.

They turned back to avoid another big storm (Not as big as the last one) and honestly, so they can repair the cosmetic damage.

You ought to try a cruise out of the NE, because then you'd know what real ocean sailing is like.

There is no storm off Jacksonville. There wasn't one in the forecast. They are however, sailing back into storms, and it sounds like they have been since they turned north.

Hopefully, the current storm coming across will miss them. They've certainly had more than their fair share of bumps.

There are "others" that have a different opinion than Karina. Just watch the news. Passengers are being interviewed and stating that they are not happy with the decision that was made regarding their safety and well being. They are not warm and fuzzy towards the Captain at all! Karina is just one passenger, not all of them.

Somebody needs to hold the Captian/RCI accountable for what happened here!!!

What has happened exactly?

The ship hit some unprecedented weather. The captain has kept everyone safe, and the ship is returning to NJ.

Why does someone need to be held accountable for mother nature doing it's worst?

They'd give the information at a point of time (or if they know it). Things like this can be fluid though and they're not the decision makers so it may still open up later.

Fingers crossed!

:o Sorry to appear stupid but why are people saying Bayonne? Our cruise is going out of Cape Liberty, New Jersey on Anthem in 6 and a half weeks but there is no mention of Bayonne. :o

Kind of like ads for Port Canaveral often quote Orlando, a point of reference, even though the port is 45 minutes away.

So if I was on the ship at the dock on the first day, and the Captain said "there's a storm, but I think we can make it, and if it's too rough we'll give you your money back, and 50% of next cruise, should we go for it, or sit here in NJ for a few days?"

I would say go for it!

And next time there's weather, and they cancel or reroute the cruise, I'm sure we'll see all kinds of angry people here.

A full refund, 50% FCC, and free drinks isn't enough? Yes, it was traumatic-- not making light of that. And yes disappointing that they are coming back. But that isn't enough compensation?

Actually I don't think so. A different situation, but when Carnival Triumph was dead in the water, the passengers lives were not at stake. The passengers were in unsanitary conditions for a couple of days so Carnival refunded cruise fares, all transportation costs to get to the cruise as well as 100% off their next cruise in addition to paying for all onboard charges before the event happened.

RCLs offer isn't terrible but I wouldn't be overly happy with it. I'm still out my vacation time, flight and / or gas and hotel pre and post cruise.
