@Horizon chaser 1957

Wonderful news about your cousin, Laura!

@StLouisCruisers Sandi, praise be! This is such a blessing - just what your family (including us) needed.

@Seasick Sailor Joy your patio is lovely and so welcoming! Glad the stress of construction is over.  By any chance when you zip lined on Maui, we’re you on a tandem zipline?

@StLouisCruisers Great news about your brother.

@Horizon chaser 1957 I'm glad your cousin did well with surgery.

Debbie are you requesting the permitted transfer to a 2022 cruise at your 2021 pricing?  If you are, did your PCC mention if you would retain your perks & / or OBC?  Thanks if you know the answer.

Yes, that is what we are doing.   And, yes, she said we retain our current per diem rate and the entire $37.50 of OBC that we have.   We'll really live it up with that!

Sounds good!  What seasonings do you use?

I think Mom just used salt and pepper and a pat of butter.   I would probably add some garlic and hot pepper.   Really, you can use the seasonings you think would work.

Lots of good news today!

@StLouisCruisersFantastic news!   I'm sure your brother is relieved as well.

@Horizon chaser 1957Great news about your sister.   May she continue to recover at a rapid rate.   Mindset is a large part of it.

@Seasick Sailor The patio is lovely.   May you have many happy moments there.

Keep the good news coming.  Let's whittle down the Care List and flood the Celebrations List.

LOL on living it up with that OBC.  Thanks kindly for the help.  I appreciate it.  We’re still mulling.

Need a little help from "The Daily. . . ." birders.

Mrs. XBGuy sent this query to me, last night.

Can you identify this bird?

Good Afternoon from the HOT Desert and Dazzling Lights of the Strip.

First Thanks to Rich @richwmnfor the Daily, and to Jacqui @kazu  for the Care List and Roy @rafinmd  for the Celebrations and Shoutouts.

Peanut Butter Cookies...YUMMMM but then I love anything Peanut Butter especially the Peanut Butter Pie that Holland America offers for lunch on Embarkation Day. I so hope they do not change that. I want so badly to have some of that Peanut Butter Pie.

Hawaii is one of my favorite destination, long before we got hooked on cruising in 2002 my husband and I and sometimes our Son would fly to Hawaii on vacation at least 2 times a year, sometimes three. But then we found cruising 😃  Our last time to Hawaii was in March 2020, it was our last trip/flight before the pandemic, we arrived home on March 17th and that night at midnight they closed everything including the Casinos in here Las Vegas. In the back of my mind I think that maybe we accidentally brought home a Lava Rock or Sand that the Goddess Pele was upset with us and caused the Pandemic and we must return. But then again maybe it was Poseiden the King of the Sea that is upset we did a land vacation which is why we are getting on the first Holland America ship we can lol Of course I am just joking about the Gods but just looking to get back to normal travel.

This next week in Las Vegas is going to be a scorcher, we will have highs in the mid hundred teens and looking to break record highs for at least 3 days 😓

Hope everyone has a great weekend and excellent week ahead.

Good news today about DB and his heart issues.  After more extensive testing and CT scans they feel he has no coronary artery anomaly so he does not need to go through the cardiac catheterization.  He can be treated in other ways for his issues with some pain and rapid heart rate.  His earlier stress test had shown abnormalities. So it was a good thing that the insurance company wanted further testing and approvals.  I'm so glad this didn't come back with bad news because we sure don't need it, do we?

Sandi, oh my gosh what great news!

No tandem Ann. At the end of each line as we came down, there was a guy who grabbed us to slow us down.

We sailed to Lahaina four times on four BHB.  October, 2006, on Zaandam, the day after the earthquake, in February, 2008, on Ryndam,  February, 2012, on Rotterdam VI, and February, 2017 on Maasdam.  My pictures are all tucked away in albums, so many thanks to those who posted theirs.

Gosh it looks like the same area, Joy.

I actually walked on the bridge in the last picture. But the company I went with had tandem lines, and a “braking system” that helped slow one down prior to reaching the guy who helped us come to a complete stop.

It was Kapalua Ziplines. Yes there was a brake system at the end and a guy that would grab and unhook your line. We went in 2019 and 2020.

We will be having peanut butter cookies with ice cream for dessert tonight - maybe as ice cream sandwiches.

We were in Lahaina in 2017 on the Oosterdam. I don't have any pictures of the port but we did go to the Iao Needle and the Maui Ocean Center -

It is the same company. I must be using the wrong term. I thought that called their side-by-side lines “tandem”.

I just loved the entire experience. And I love that we both did it!  Wish we could have done it together.

Thought I would tell the rest of the story of my grandparents and Hawaii.  After living in Honolulu awhile my grandfather developed some type of heart problem.  His doctor told him that the heat of Hawaii didn't agree with him and that he should move back to Siberia.  He took his advice and the whole family got on a ship for the trip back.  On the ship, he died from a heart attack and was buried at Kobe, Japan when the ship docked there.  The rest of the family went back to Irkutsk, Siberia.  They corresponded with friends in Honolulu who encouraged them to return.  In 1916, they decided to do that.  My aunt described the train ride to Vladivostok where the train would stop and everyone had to get off while the soldiers took it over.  In Vladivostok my grandmother got the proper exit papers from the authorities just before the ship was to debark.  When they arrived in Honolulu the U.S. authorities said "You can't just get off the ship.  We have immigration laws now."  Luckily there was a reporter for the Honolulu Advertiser aboard who wrote a newspaper article saying the Soltonovich family is stranded aboard the ship.  Who knows them?  A bunch of their friends came aboard to sponsor them and they were able to debark.  My mother was sent to an Episcopal boarding school to start the first grade and was there through senior high school.  I realize the story isn't about Maui, but it started there.

Incidentally, a few years ago our ship stopped in Kobe and some of the residents there volunteered to show the sights to some of the passengers.  I asked a lady if she could help me find my grandfather's grave.  I gave her his name and that he died in 1912 or 1913.  She got on her phone  and said he was in the foreign section in a National Park in the mountains, and if I would hire a cab she would take us there.  We found the grave to be well taken care of and a headstone with his name on it.  It seems there was a foreign cemetary in the city, but after the war all the graves were moved to the mountainside park.  I left with a new feeling of the kindness and efficiency of the Japanese people.
