We should be in Lyttelton, New Zealand, exactly 3 months from today, on March 30, 2023. Today's location is Akaroa, NZ, which is quite a bit further from Christchurch. If there isn't a shuttle service to Christchurch, we see that there is a local bus. Another poster said the locals don't like the cruise ship people to use the local bus, however. For my Prinsendam fans, she is still the ship pictured on the shore excursions for the ports on the Holland America site. Thank you to all who have posted pictures today. Christchurch looks like a lovely place! And for you art fans- Annie, my suggestion for Athens and Messina is to take the Hop on, Hop off bus. In Athens, they pick you up in the parking lot of the port area. In Messina, we got it at the cathedral after walking into into town. Depending on your ability, you could climb the bell tower at the cathedral, just don't be up there at noon when the bells chime. In Katakolon, Olympia is near with the site of the ancient games. You can catch a local bus near the port for about 8 to 10 Euros each, at least that was the price in 2019. Early morning is best, and we caught the 9 am bus. The bus will drop you off near the site of the museum and anciient games and pick you up two hours latter. Katakolon is an easy walking town, and has restaurants on the waterfront for a snack, meal or cold drink. Lenda 17
marshhawk Posted December 31, 2022 #62 Share Posted December 31, 2022 @Quartzsite Cruiser Thank you so much for the information. I went into the computer using the other option (not google,) and got to look at all the ports that they visit, and Messina, and Katakolon were not even on the list. I was beginning to think that the ship is full, but the ports may have changed...to where I know not because you cant see the itinerary if you cant find the cruise. So on a whim because Athens did show on the list, I put in my booking number to see if I could reserve that way, and nope, I cant. So, either the ports changed, or the cruise changed, but I really would hate to show up in Italy with 10 days to wait for the next cruise. The flight is paid for, and the hotel is now reserved. We ended up booking Hotel Nazionale, near the Pantheon, and it was listed as a very quiet neighborhood, as cars are not allowed on the square. There is a government building there so lots of security, and it included breakfast each day. Much better than trying to round up food from somewhere each morning. 12

Annie, I'll copy and paste Rich's posts for each of those cities so you can check out photos and discussions. Athens was posted Dec. 24, 2021 and July 14, 2022. The reason I'll do both dates is because there probably are different photos on each date, due to circumstances and new posters. For instance we drove to Ohio on Dec. 24, 2021 so I didn't post photos of Athens late in the day. I had time to post Athens and Piraeus photos on July 14, 2022. The next photos are from Messina which was port of the day April 4, 2021 and June 5, 2022. Here's the links: The last port information is for Katakolon which we had here on June 18, 2021 and March 23, 2022. Enjoy your planning! 12

If the Hotel Nationale has not changed, you will love it. I spent a week there in 2006 and could walk everywhere! My nephew was so impressed, that whenever he went there for business after that trip, he stayed there. The rooms were lovely. The breakfast room was unique and the breakfast was impressive in its variety. There was also a great meeting room near the entrance where we would enjoy planning our next outing. Enjoy! Rare rafinmd Posted December 31, 2022 Author #66 Share Posted December 31, 2022 Someone mentioned visiting the Antarctic Center in Christchurch. That's what I did from the Crystal Symphony in 2018. Our first view was the US Hanger: Much of the transportation in remote regions is on tracked vehicles called Hagglunds. We got to ride in one over a simulated obstacle course: We were given parkas and got to experience a simulated Antarctic Storm: As we left we got a look at one of the planes that serves the bases: Roy 15
JazzyV Posted December 31, 2022 #67 Share Posted December 31, 2022 (edited) @rafinmd Roy, that was me. In Christchurch, we went to the International Antarctic Centre, so didn't see the city. In the low temperature chamber Lyttelton Timeball Station. From 1876 to 1934 a ball dropped from its mast on its stone tower, signaling the time to ships in Lyttelton Harbor. Sharon in AZ Posted December 31, 2022 #68 Share Posted December 31, 2022 Good evening! Somehow the day got away from me. But I did put a hold on a cruise. I just couldn’t decide what to book and was torn between Hawaii and the British Isles. However, since our last international flights in June were so crazy and stressful, we decided Hawaii would be the best this time. We’ve been to Hawaii before but it was 1984 and we’ve never sailed so it’ll be fun, plus I love all the sea days. Sandi @StLouisCruisers, I checked out our roll call and it was 6 pages of posts between two posters, back and forth back and forth. I’m glad your roll call is more interesting and to have Debbie and her sister too is fantastic. The cruise is on hold because I’m adding Club Orange and our PCC couldn’t call them today because of her schedule and the holiday. Anyway, I’m just shocked that I got Craig to cruise longer than 14 days. @luvteaching — that is so exciting DH is coming home. What a great way to start the New Year. Joy @Seasick Sailor, Oh dear on your laundry. I hope it turns up soon. Linda @lindaler, I was wondering about your luggage. Good news that it’s been found but yikes on living out of your carryon. Please keep us posted. See you all tomorrow!
