Greenymac Posted May 18, 2019 #1 Share Posted May 18, 2019 The reason I'm curious is that here in the US, I have never in my life seen an advertisement or commercial for Celebrity. Carnival, Norwegian, and RCCL advertise regularly though. I decided we were going to take our first cruise, so I started researching what line would suit us best. I was really only looking at the previous 3 I mentioned, but as I was reading and watching videos I saw another line called Celebrity, so I started digging into who they were since I had never heard of it. Before long, after reading and researching I felt Celebrity clicked the most boxes for us so I booked our first cruise last fall and we cruised in December. I ended up loving it and never even saw any commercial or advertisement, Although I've spoken to friends in the UK who says Celebrity advertises heavily there. HelenREMfan Posted May 18, 2019 #2 Share Posted May 18, 2019 When we took our first Celeb cruise I had no idea about cruise lines. I selected the cruise based on an interesting itinerary (it was a "Wine Immersion" cruise and had 2 days in Le Havre, then to Bordeaux, across to Bilbao, down to Porto and Vigo. ) It was a lovely cruise -the bonus being 2 French stops. I also loved the fact that it is a more adult traveller in board - as an ex teacher, although I like and get on well with kids, I do not do poor parenting. So to be able to avoid kids running about is a huge plus for us. We liked the Celebrity product and we have sailed exclusively with them ever since. I am wary moving to/trying another line in case I don't like it as well.....
Bo1953 Posted May 18, 2019 #3 Share Posted May 18, 2019 Hmmm, what part of GA do you live and what are the television and radio stations in the area? It would be very, very, very difficult to miss cruise adverts unless you just do not listen or look at some of the major stations/programing. Good for you if there is a limited market in your area... No major newspapers, either, I guess... We see them often, here in the NYC/PHL market, sometimes several a day. bon voyage

Norwegian, RCCL and carnival advertise here and I sometimes see adverts for river cruises, but never Celebrity. When we got to South Florida for our cruise, I did hear plenty of adverts for Celebrity on the radio though and that was the first time ever.

d9704011 Posted May 18, 2019 #8 Share Posted May 18, 2019 We overheard some people at the airport talking about their Eclipse cruise when traveling home from our first cruise with Princess. We decided to try Celebrity at a later date and have done so half a dozen times now.
GastroGnome Posted May 18, 2019 #9 Share Posted May 18, 2019 We went to a cruise show (I know its different in the UK). There was a huge show in Central London with all the big cruise lines. We knew we wanted to cruise but not on which one so we started there. It was fairly quick to narrow down to 2 or 3 lines we wanted then a bit of internet research (and CC!) decided us and we've never looked back. (That was some years ago now but there are three huge cruise expo type shows in the UK that we know of - and probably more we can't get to.) I don't think I've seen X advertising on UK TV. P&O do - and Viking. Oh - and NCL. But I can't recall any others - although I confess I don't pay that much attention.
wpgcycler Posted May 18, 2019 #10 Share Posted May 18, 2019 I subscribe to one of those sites that sends out travel offers (don’t believe I’m allowed to name it but I will say it’s a sort of “zoo”). One day there was an offer for Celebrity cruises. Despite having always been pretty much dead against cruising, I took a look anyway. Probably the 3 things that sold me on the idea we’re anytime dining, drink packages and being able to have my own veranda. I research absolutely everything I do using the web and in short order I determined CC was one of the better resources for information. A review of a cruise on Reflection by librarylady convinced me we should give it a go so I booked and surprised my wife later that evening - turned out it was something she always wanted to do but didn’t say as she knew I loathed the idea. We loved it, did one more and will do our 3rd next January with a group of close friends who are first timers. 1
vtcruising Posted May 18, 2019 #11 Share Posted May 18, 2019 We were Diamond on RCI and enjoyed their ships, but when I heard about Celebrity's smoking policy (and that I could go to a smoke-free casino and bars and use our balcony without the smell that gives me a headache) and how it was geared more toward our age group with few children (love children, but enjoy the ambiance on X), I knew we had to give it a try. We loved it and never looked back. A lot has changed, of course, but the crew is still amazing and the guests are a good group of people to share a ship with. 1
Gracie115 Posted May 18, 2019 #12 Share Posted May 18, 2019 A TA we used way back in 1998 told us about Celebrity and recommended for our 1st cruise. We live in Florida and there are many TV ads for Celebrity now, I don't remember many when we first started cruising though.

Our newspapers never carry the kind of ads you see in NYC/PHL . You may see a small ad from a local TA and there is always AAA. I have seen cruise tv commercials but rarely Celebrity. The commercials are different in different places. We also live close to mountain resorts that spend their money in the big city markets and only occasionally advertise locally. Rare C-Dragons Posted May 18, 2019 #16 Share Posted May 18, 2019 We were booked to be on the maiden voyage of the QM2 in 2004. Then one day I saw a X commercial on TV. It was intriguing, boasting how their guests were “treated like Royalty”. Doing some research I discovered that we could sail in a suite on the Summit for the same price we were paying for a regular verandah cabin on the QM2. So we switched, fell in love with X, and have never looked back. 1
eyecantwait Posted May 18, 2019 #17 Share Posted May 18, 2019 Our first cruises were on RCCL when the kids were kids and I guess we saw ads for Celebrity there. We much prefer Celebrity now for its lack of rock climbing walls, flow riders, etc. but will still happily book a 3 or 4 night RCCL for the right price for a quick getaway. boscobeans Posted May 18, 2019 #18 Share Posted May 18, 2019 20 years ago we decided to try a cruise for a cruise vacation. At that time there were many choices for us that would make sense as we live in New York and Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, HAL, Carnival and Princess left from a port close to home. Online research and some lurking on cruise forums steered us to Celebrity so we gave it a try. A one week cruise to Bermuda, including sailing through a hurricane on the Zenith, hooked us and from then on X was our favorite but due to several reasons we began, after a few years, to try some of the other lines with longer itineraries and better departure dates. OCruisers Posted May 18, 2019 #19 Share Posted May 18, 2019 Many years ago back when Celebrity had 10 day roundtrip cruises out of Charleston and Jacksonville. Wish X would still offer these. 2
Luvcrusn Posted May 18, 2019 #20 Share Posted May 18, 2019 Back before computers made everything so easy to research we spotted a Celebrity ship in port while on another cruise. Talking to passengers from the Celebrity ship, we decided to try it for our next cruise.
Rare Jim_Iain Posted May 18, 2019 #21 Share Posted May 18, 2019 Surprised to hear you don't get any commercials for Celebrity. We live in SF Bay area and see commercials quite frequently on TV and often even have commercial spots on the Radio. I would think that your area so close to the ports would be a prime market. We were introduced to Celebrity back in 2001 with a Post Thanksgiving group cruise. We liked the product and have only sailed Celebrity. I still like the product and enjoy the perks of a frequent cruiser. 1
Straughn Posted May 18, 2019 #22 Share Posted May 18, 2019 My brother was a RCCL employee when they purchased Celebrity. He told us to give it a try as we would find it a more upscale cruise line. He was oh, so, right. While the product has changed (not for the better), Celebrity is still my cruise line of choice.
Marelaine Posted May 18, 2019 #23 Share Posted May 18, 2019 (edited) I've seen Celebrity commercials on TV, but newspaper TA ads for Celebrity caught my attention. Then I started researching, on line, various cruise lines. I eliminated the ones, that had the kiddie attractions because we didn't want to sail with a bunch of kids. Carnival sounded like a party cruise line for younger people - so that was crossed off the list. Next, I focused on food and ship design. Norwegian looked garish to me, so we put that on our 'probably not' list. Looking at our budget, the luxury lines were out of question. We narrowed down to Celebrity and Princess. After narrowing it down, we went to visit a local travel agent. Solstice was a brand new ship that she had just sailed so she recommended that for us, booked a 7 day eastern Caribbean. We've been hooked since then. After a few cruises, we decided we needed perspective, so we booked Royal Princess when it was new. It was a lovely ship and great crew, but we preferred Celebrity. We haven't decided which line we will try next, but I will be considering itinerary and price first, then I'll check the Cruise Critic boards to see the comments on the next choice. My driveway to jaxport 2 hours flat, less if I'm really pushing. 2
