boscobeans Posted June 22, 2020 #1 Share Posted June 22, 2020 Lots of discussion going on as to if the face shield will take the place of the face mask. Some claim it is just as effective against Covid-19, no effect on breathing, can be easily washed, doesn't get wet and covers mouth and eyes as well. Just wondering what others think?
Rare steamboats Posted June 22, 2020 #2 Share Posted June 22, 2020 Face shields are not regarded as masks in my country... face shield might protect you in case someone coughs or sneezes in your direction. But aerosoles and your coughs/sneezes are going out pretty well through the opening at your chin. A masks does protect others from your aerosoles, coughs and sneezes... steamboats 2

goldfish65 Posted June 22, 2020 #12 Share Posted June 22, 2020 No. A mask along with all the other precautions is sufficient for me. I don't go into crowds, or have sustained close contact with the public, as some jobs require, where the extra protection of a shield would be desirable. eel Posted June 22, 2020 #13 Share Posted June 22, 2020 A shield is a good option if you are unable to wear a mask for medical reasons. Otherwise, a mask is better.
boscobeans Posted June 22, 2020 Author #14 Share Posted June 22, 2020 Their use seems to be more and more practical and effective. The more I see people improperly wearing masks on the streets and in retail establishment the more I doubt their effectiveness.. Some scientists are now arguing that face shields might be the next big thing in your coronavirus protection arsenal. A recent opinion article published in the journal JAMA suggests that face shields could help reduce the number of COVID-19 infections when paired with social distancing, good hand hygiene, and increased testing for the virus. Face shields were also recommended as part of a policy review conducted by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for re-opening Pennsylvania schools. William Schaffner, M.D., an infectious disease specialist and professor at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. “A face shield provides a barrier for anything going out, but also for things going in,” Now, a team of experts from the University of Iowa led by Dr. Eli Perencevich, of the university's department of internal medicine, reportrd in the April 29 Journal of the American Medical Association that face shields might replace masks as a more comfortable and more effective deterrent to COVID-19.
Lazz Posted June 23, 2020 #15 Share Posted June 23, 2020 A face shield would be much better for my asthma and nasal polyps. Here is a recent article from AARP: https://www.aarp.org/health/healthy-living/info-2020/shields-compared-to-masks.html?cmp=SNO-ICM-FB-COVID-HLTH&socialid=3432276850
Rare cruiselvr04 Posted June 23, 2020 #16 Share Posted June 23, 2020 I just got some. I don’t plan on everyday wear but in certain situations like flying I will wear one in addition to a surgical type mask. There’s good evidence they work. They keep droplets from your face and eyes. Droplets “drop” so they won’t go up under a shield. They can be reused multiple times by wiping down with a sanitizer wipe. It’s a great alternative for those who say they feel like they can’t breath with a mask on. And it may be cooler for the summer. Although you still can’t eat with them on you could drink with a straw. Just remember the outside is contaminated so when you remove it, do it from the sides. The DH doesn’t like the ones I bought because they say “Face shield” in big letters in the front. I laughed and told him I’d get some white tape to cover it up.

LuCruise Posted June 23, 2020 #18 Share Posted June 23, 2020 I visited a close relative in the ICU and wore both a face mask and a shield. The shield got condensation built up on it and was hard to see out of at times. I'm not sure though if it's because I was wearing both the mask and the shield , or if this would still be an issue with the shield alone (and warm weather). squale2 Posted June 23, 2020 #22 Share Posted June 23, 2020 From what I have read over the last few months is that everyone should wear a mask - not to protect yourself but to protect others. After reading this I would ask why wouldn't you want to add the shield so that you are protecting yourself and not being so dependent on others to protect you? Just a thought/question

KG1924 Posted June 23, 2020 #24 Share Posted June 23, 2020 At work we are required to wear a mask the entire time we are in the building (not fun, but I work with the public and I'm grateful for my employment....sadly the acne that is popping up under this thing from sweating 8+ hours a day is REALLY not fun lol!) We were provided a face shield as well, but it was optional and the mask still had to be worn underneath. The way it was explained to me was that the mask protects others from me, the shield protects me from others. I wore it for about 5 minutes. If I could go with just the shield I would, but it's way too many layers for me with the mask underneath and I felt that I was a bit intimidating looking! I have an even deeper respect for people in the medical field that are facing this thing head on and have to wear that and then some day in and day out. I couldn't do it. One positive I could see for face shields on cruises is that you realistically could still sip drinks through a straw while wearing it....but in reality, I don't see myself cruising until this thing is gone. I'm not against masks in any way, we are still required to wear them in indoor public places so it's pretty normal to me right now. I just don't see how the logistics would work on a cruise in general, let alone the whole mask thing.
squale2 Posted June 23, 2020 #25 Share Posted June 23, 2020 With all the different masks that have been created you would think that someone would create a shield that would do the job without having to wear a mask. I think shields are the way to go but I am not a Scientist- just an average joe
