I am appalled (but not surprised) of the audacity of little Murphy's surgeon.  In my experience, neuro surgeons and cardiac surgeons are the worst (hope no one on here is one of those) - not the most patient friendly, let's say.  I do hope he is reported.  It was a tough decision to make and the parents should be supported not beaten down.

I so agree with you.  Back when I still worked, one of my clients was a heart and thoracic surgeon.  A brilliant surgeon but his bedside manner was meh.  I always said if I ever needed heart surgery, I would want him to do the operation and his WIFE (who was a sweetheart) to be the one who talked to me.

@cruising sisterDon't panic on the GA!! I am reading the roll call which is very, very active. I know many of the things people are planning are not going to happen to me. I plan a nice, low key, sight-seeing type of cruise with plenty of time to put my feet up and let the world roll (or sail) by. I am going to have a techie type friend help me with the two visas next week. I have scheduled a number of tours but I know I will cancel some when I am on board depending on how I am feeling and what I find out about them. Plan to play alot of it by ear. Don't stress .... the cruise will sort itself out as we go. My feeling is you can't go wrong with a cruise

I was just about to tell @cruising sister the same thing.  It will all sort itself out.

Just over 37 years ago I lost my son, Sean, at birth to an extremely rare heart condition. The doctors, nurses, and grief counselors prepared my ex-wife and I over a short five days of what we could expect both positive and negative. It has never left me.

And that memory will never leave you 😔. Hugs to you as you recall that time ❤️

Greetings everyone from Biarritz France.  Neither rain nor snow here, instead it’s sunny and in the 90’s, perfect for having lunch overlooking the Atlantic with a glass of wine.  We flew here on Tuesday from Rome via Zurich.  The flight leaving Rome was late and we barely made our connection, sadly our luggage didn’t.  Fortunately, on a whim I had purchased Apple air tags for this trip and we were able to track our bags from Zurich to Geneva to here. The baggage folks in Biarritz insisted that no rush luggage was on the only flight to Biarritz this afternoon while the air tags indicated that they were in the terminal.  The air tags won and have already paid for themselves.  We had purchased trip insurance and since our bags were almost 48 hours late we’ll get reimbursed for our little shopping spree this afternoon.  Prayers for everyone on our prayer list.  Cheers to those of you celebrating happy events!

Day 2 of the same clothes.

Good afternoon. Thanks for the Fleet Report/Daily.

I like salami, mainly on an Italian sub sandwich. It's raining today and the mail should still come. I admire Grandma Moses. I agree with the quote. I love chickpeas, so I'd like the salad (no olives). Pass on the drink and yes to the wine. I have been to Philipsburg on my Panama Canal Cruise on the NCL Bliss in 2019. I didn't see much as my knee chose that day to act up and I could only limp around. I just got off the ship for a bit and stayed near the dock. . An important day in history for Brazil.

It's cloudy and rainy here today, so I'll be inside during the day. Our friends from Germany want to go bar hopping, so BFF and I will drop them off, go to dinner (Hofbrauhaus) and sit by the river a while at the restaurant's tent, then pick them up later.

@Crazy For Cats Enjoy your tour and no rain during it. 90 minutes is a big time change. I hope your DM is feeling good today. Thanks for the Corner Brook photos.

@StLouisCruisers Great photos from Sint Maarten. Wow on seeing that many deer at once.

@Denise T Congrats on booking a new cruise.

@Haljo1935 Keep up the good work. I'm sure the hydro pool and sauna will help while onboard.

@Cruzin Terri You can only do what you can do, and you're doing great.

@1ANGELCAT It's crazy that this guy is still out there (although I understand with all the woods), but so deleterious to businesses and schools closing, and people just being frightened.

@cruising sister So sad to learn of Murphy having an infection and needing higher vent settings. How awful of that surgeon to do that to your niece. Continued prayers for them all. Congratulations on booking the 2025 VOV.

@GTVCRUISER Nice photos.

@marshhawk Ouch on stepping on the thumbtack, but at least you felt it. I knew someone with diabetic neuropathy who had lots of punctures on her foot from stepping on a thumbtack while in slipper socks (she didn't feel it). Great news on DH's dermatology report. Interesting how he's wanting to cook lately.

@kazu I'm glad some people volunteered to help with you very big M&G. Your hydrangeas are lovely.

@lindaler I hope you'll still have a wonderful time on that cruise.

@rafinmd Beautiful sunrise.

@Himself Nice to see you posting, Father.

@Heartgrove Thank you for sharing that heart wrenching experience. Hugs.

@Mr. Boston I'm glad you finally got your luggage. Nice photos of you two and the beach.

Prayers for the Care List and a Toast to those Celebrating.

Good morning,

It has really cooled down here in Kansas by 20 degrees!  My niece is back home in North Carolina and I am recovering from all the activity. She brings a level of energy that rivals a 5 year old. Put the two together and they are unstoppable.

Unfortunately,There is more bad news for Murphy. She has another infection and vent settings went up. They are getting conflicting information from the specialists and especially the surgeon. He wanted to meet my niece alone and was almost shaming her on her negative thoughts. The palliative care team were livid that he did that. It put undo pressure on her. I told her surgeons have egos that need to be fed at times.

I am really beginning to panic about my GA trip. The roll call is so active I can hardly keep up. I have decided to put a deposit on the Voyage of the Vikings for 2025. I have FCD I purchased in May so deposit is covered.

It’s nice to see dailyites enjoying vacations with several more in the next few weeks. Prayers for those on our list and others in need. Have a great day everyone!

Very sad report on Baby Murphy.  It's hard to believe how badly that surgeon treated the mother and why did he want to talk to her alone?  I agree that he should be reported.  I'll continue to pray for that sweet baby because miracles happen every day.  Your new cruise booking sounds great!

Good morning, everyone!

The heat has finally broken and we are looking forward to pleasant temperatures from this point forward.  Today's high is 70, much improved over 90.  The AC was having a hard time keeping up yesterday and I'm wondering if we need to have it looked at.  The fan was working, but the air coming out was not as cool as it should have been.  Good news is that it can wait a bit before we need to do anything.

Today's meal is one I would have declined until after reading a bit about chickpeas.  I might give it a try as a side dish.

Chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans, have been grown and eaten in Middle Eastern countries for thousands of years.

Their nutty taste and grainy texture pair well with many other foods and ingredients.

As a rich source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber, chickpeas may offer a variety of health benefits, such as aiding weight management, improving digestion, and reducing your risk of disease.

Additionally, this legume is high in protein and makes an excellent replacement for meat in many vegetarian and vegan dishes.  https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/chickpeas-nutrition-benefits

chickpea.jpg.a6762fd5f82658faed2aec64b1f74813.jpg

This first recipe is quick and easy and so fresh!  If you want to add a traditional source of protein, go ahead.  They suggest chicken or shrimp.  I think some of today's salami would go well with it.  https://www.ambitiouskitchen.com/the-easiest-chopped-chickpea-greek-salad/

chickpeagreeksalad1.jpg.c228920806dc47565c74c48aa4f118a6.jpg

This recipe has a slight variation in the dressing for the salad.  Ingredients can vary according to your taste.  https://www.twopeasandtheirpod.com/greek-chickpea-salad/

chickpeagreeksalad2.thumb.jpg.c3b7f2d841ee833a04f18744e96b8434.jpg

This one caught my attention and made me think I should try this recipe.  Roasted tomatoes add so much flavor and crispy chickpeas sound like a real treat.   https://www.lastingredient.com/chickpea-greek-salad/

chickpeagreeksalad3.thumb.jpg.0632c6704ded821dbe8770ea8fb88fc0.jpg

Wishing you all a wonderful day!

Debbie, your AC sounds like ours.  It's barely keeping up in late afternoon so we have a technician supposedly coming today.  I'll let you know what he says afterwards.  Hopefully something simple to repair.

Thanks for our Thursday Daily, Rich

and thanks to Ann, Debbie, Vanessa & Dixie

I’m late to the party again 😔. Good collection of days.  Grandma Moses is an inspiration.  Neither rain nor snow normally stops my dog walks but the mail?  Most times it is delivered but often the community mailbox is frozen and it can take days to get it de-iced and opened (and yes, we have to do that).

I really like today’s quote - it is so true.

IMG_0889.jpeg.4d30ea9ee1ad0a1c2c1d5514b09d956d.jpeg

No outside work got done yesterday 😢 I wasn’t feeling great but it was my roll call, emails and spread sheet that kept me indoors.  They have me hopping!  The roll call is shy of 2,500 posts with an astronomical # of people for the sail away and Meet and Greet - the largest I have done - surpassing my Hawaii, Tahiti Marquesas tour (which I thought were a lot).  Thankfully some roll call members have offered to help me distribute the invites and with the M & G. 👍  And of course, Ivan needed attention and time.  Bless him I think he knew I wasn’t up to snuff and wasn’t demanding as much fetch as usual.

It’s supposed to rain for 3 days so I better get my act together today.

IMG_0893.jpeg.a343517e59100ef03d318b41cc5c2859.jpeg

90 minutes?  Sounds like you might be headed to Newfoundland, Jake?  I’m so glad no storms will impede you visiting the 3 ports there. 👍

LOL - that’s a common sight here Sandi and not one most of us here welcome.  I’m glad you enjoyed them.  I wish I could send you some of ours 😔

@cruising sister that surgeon was SO out of line.  He should be reported IMO.  So unfair to do that to your niece.  Especially alone 😡. My prayers continue for Baby Murphy, your niece and DH and you. 🙏

Prayers for those on the Care list, those suffering losses, health issues, worries & those that need them.  Cheers to those celebrating & cruising 🥂

Hello everyone,

@cruising sister thank you for the update on baby Murphy.

I am so sorry that sweet baby Murphy is still having problems.

I am going to play devil’s advocate here a bit. Palliative care does not mean do not treat so it appears they are treating her when and if things come up. This is a good thing. This means the surgeon has not given up on Murphy and wants to continue to treat her.

I for one am very happy to see this. I worked in critical care for over 25 years and have seen miracles. I have seen surgeons go to the mat for a patient and succeed when other areas of medical care have given up; it is not about ego. They do care a lot. The surgeon is the doctor in charge of the whole case, the palliative is a supportive team. I am pretty sure this high level of surgeon has seen this type of case before and knows how to treat it and has been successful and will not give up until there is nothing else that can be treated. It is really a fine tuning of a case such as this, looking at trends of numbers, labs, assessments etc.  It is not easy and it can be a long time for treatment, but it can work.

Medicine is not an exact science because every human body is different and reacts differently to medical cares.

That said, no one has ever said that surgeons have great bed side manner. IMO, outside of the patient care realm is where the big surgeon egos show up. The family, especially the mom, is exhausted and vulnerable. I am not going to second guess what he said or how he communicated with the mom, especially if her perception was that he was almost shaming her.

My questions would be, I wonder why he wanted to see the mom alone and I wonder where the negative thinking came from if not from the surgeon.  I am not involved so these are rhetorical questions here.

Continued prayers for Murphy, her parents, the family, and all of the people taking care of her.

Take care,

Caron

Good afternoon from a hot (101F) central Texas.  I finished my errands before it was too hot, and then, after a late breakfast, I got the meat bagged and in the freezer, and caught up on the Daily.

@kazu  Jacqui, as others have said, your hydrangeas are outstanding.

@marshhawk  Annie, I'm glad your DH got a good report from the dermatologist yesterday.  That's one less thing to worry about.  It's interesting that your DH is researching new recipes.  A hint for the scalloped potatoes.  If you have a food processor with a blade for slicing, that makes the slicing easy and the slices uniform.  It took me a while to realize that would work so well.

@lindaler We've done some cruises through the south Pacific islands and would love to see more of them.  They are normally very pretty and laid back, but hot.  I think you will enjoy the cruise.

@Heartgrove  Jack, our condolences on the loss of Sean even after all these years.

@durangoscots  Susan, your plan to play a lot of the cruise by ear sounds good.  That's the beauty of cruising; you can do as much or as little as you want.  But the best part, is you are still on a ship and at sea.

@Cruising-along  Carolyn, after the comments about downtown Seattle, I'm glad we enjoyed exploring the city on turnaround days on b2b2b cruises more than ten years ago.  We stayed downtown pre-cruise once and it was a good experience.  However, in 2018 when our flight to DFW was cancelled, we spent one night at an airport hotel, and it was not a good experience since the hotel room was clean but the carpet was horrible.  BTW, we didn't get off the ship on turnaround day except to got through Immigration.

@Mr. Boston  I'm glad your luggage caught up with your and the air tags helped.  Thanks for the picture of the two of you and of the beach.

@sailingdutchy  Tony, thanks for your pictures.  I'm glad you finally got to see another Dutch island.  We've enjoyed our many visits to the island and have rented cars and explored both sides of the island many times.

@aliaschief  Bruce, just WOW!  That sunset is spectacular.

@HAL4NOW  Tony, thanks for your pictures from Corner Brook.  I hope to get there someday.

@Cruisercl  Caron, thank you for your perspective about Murphy's surgeon.  My big question was why not talk to both parents.  We have been fortunate in the last  year that the neurosurgeons we've dealt with and are dealing with have been really good.  Yes, sometimes the bedside manner could improve, but I want the one with the best skill set and outcome record.  Even the spine surgeon who rushes in and out, has a good rapport with DH and me, but not with our neighbor.  But then, it takes two to make a relationship, even a professional one, work well.

@Haljo1935  I hope the appointment today went well and the doctor was pleased with the progress.

Lenda thanks for your comments.  I'd be interested to know which airport hotel this was if you remember?  Many times we'll stay in a SeaTac airport hotel if we have an early flight out in the morning.  Our favorite long-time hotel was turned into a home for the homeless.

Yay on the apple air tags.  They saved my bacon twice 👍

When you get home, take the batteries out and put them back in before the next trip and they will last longer (someone else shared that tip with me 😉)

Great pics and SO glad you have insurance to cover your shopping and your luggage has connected. 👍

Ah ha!  I was right.  Great pics and so glad you got to Newfoundland.  I believe it will be the first time in at least 2 years (if not 3) that tropical storms haven’t diverted that itinerary from Newfoundland.

Enjoy every second 🙂

Carolyn, I'm pretty sure it was the Red Roof Inn.  We chose it because it had shuttle service to and from the airport.  The other problem was, there were no places to eat close by.  We ordered a pizza delivered for dinner and I picked up some dubious stuff for breakfast at the gas station next door.  Hopefully, since 2018, the hotel has been refurbished.  The stress from the canceled flight and the poor customer service from the airline didn't help our impression of that part of Seattle.

Thanks Lenda!  We haven't stayed at that one, I think I saw some bad reviews (?) so never have booked it.  I don't blame you, sounds like a terrible night.

Let's just say we've had better nights.  Besides having the shuttle, DH had stayed in Red Roof Inns for years when traveling on business and really liked them.

Thanks for all the well wishes for Murphy. My biggest beef with the surgeon was meeting my niece alone with no support for her. They have made the decision for no trach and DNR if she codes again. Care conference was not productive as mom and dads main concern was area of stroke and new spot they saw on CT and neurology was not there. Surgeon has many times come in and gone against care team confusing the situation. As a pediatrician I have taken care of many complex kids and have been in similar situations when the team is not on the same page so I feel their frustration. Quality of life for all is the end goal. They feel terrible that Murphy has gone through such painful procedures and is unable to wean off the narcotics without severe withdrawal symptoms. This is such a mess for all involved.

This is such a sad situation.  I'm sure everyone involved wants what is best for Murphy, but they seem to have different ideas, and act on them disregarding what others feel is best.  I can't imagine the stress that young couple and the rest of the family are going through.

Let's just say we've had better nights.  Besides having the shuttle, DH had stayed in Red Roof Inns for years when traveling on business and really liked them.

We usually stay at the Marriott Sea-Tac hotel & occasionally at the Southcenter Courtyard.   Both have shuttles & restaurants either at the site or nearby.

Thanks for the information.  Since it was short notice that we'd need a hotel room, there was not much available.  I just hope we're never in that situation again.

The situation is just so heartbreaking for Baby Murphy and her parents 💔

It is a mess and the poor little one suffering so.  It’s just sad 💔

More prayers will wing Baby Murphy’s way. 🙏
