mountain lions are back. We have several that evidently have a circuit they follow that includes the hill adjacent to my condo. I did not see them, but my neighbors did and called to warn me about taking the dogs out.

There are recurring online flame wars about whether there are mountain lions in this part of New York, or only in the Adirondacks. Fergus was always irritated by the name, because he was certain that they weren't real lions.

Good morning friends!  It’s Wednesday and Zuiderdam is at sea destination Reykjavik, Iceland eta 6/21.  The temp this morning is a balmy 43F, skies are overcast and winds are out of the NE at 13.5 mph.  We are scooting along at 16 knots.  Today is dressy night and I have no plans to do anything outside my room other than eat.  And I’m not eating much of anything right now, just enough to keep my strength up.  My cold is better but my stomach is upset with me and I have no idea what to fill it with that would please it.  A good time to have some sea days.

Thank you Rich @richwmn for the Fleet Report and Daily as well as the fleet location maps.  Wow on the diversity of subjects for our days to recognize.  None of the food and beverages sound appetizing to me, but it was an important day in London Police history from back in 1829.  Thanks to Debbie @dfish, Dixie @summer slope and Ann @cat shepard for their reports today.

Prayers for all here on the Daily Care list, DB, Alex’s growing boys, the people in Israel and Ukraine, the hostages still held, and our military over there protecting us.  Cheers to all celebrating a special event or cruising.  And thanks to Vanessa @JazzyV for the C&C lists each day!

The destination today is a new one – Dutch Harbor, Alaska.  I’m well aware of the port from TV’s Deadliest Catch program but have never been there before.  I have it on the itinerary on my 2025 summer cruise so perhaps it will happen after all.  No links today and no pictures from me.  Please share if you have some.

Well, time to crawl under the covers and read, or sleep, or do some cross stitching.  Time flies at sea so you really never get as much done as you think you will.  Hope you all have a nice day, and try to stay safe and keep well!

There are pictures of Dutch Harbor on the two Live From" threads that are on the HAL board. I'm also on the 2025 cruise, so following with great interest!

@Heartgrove In 36+ years at the Diamond Bar casa, we have had the water pressure regulator replaced twice--most recently, last January when the inside pressure was measured at 85 psi.  It is a mechanical device, and, not surprisingly, its effectiveness declines over the years.

I'm taking a quick break from house cleaning since DH was nice enough to go through his video of Dutch Harbor and transfer some of screen shots from the video.

In 2000 we were on the old Regal Princess from Vancouver to Osaka.  One of the stops was Dutch Harbor.  We took the shuttle, a school bus, into Unalaska and walked around.  It wasn't raining, but the wind off the ocean was very cold.

The hotel where we bought a couple of long sleeved t-shirts which we still have.

The view from the shuttle.  Since the shuttle crossed part of the runway at the airport, the buses had to stop when a plane was taking off or landing.

Good morning to all and thanks for the daily and fleet report.  I remember when Garfield "appeared" and my girls loved him and I absolutely think he is the best!!  We should recognize (and combat) sexual violence every day and I had to look up BSD day - very, very interesting!!  Do not agree or like the quote.  But @dfish the meal - oh, my!!  I am keeping those recipes and will try it someday with a Gimlet!!  Wine is too expensive and I have never been to Dutch Harbor though @Quartzsite Cruiser I researched for the article about the priest on your Volendam cruise - all I can say is Wow!!  SMH!  Cool about the London police force history.

ScreenShot2024-06-19at10_29_16.png.f0eadf1f11b0430abb1dd57d22aa3892.png

Woke up this morning to no internet but after going on the Cox app saw that they were doing an "upgrade".  Funny no notice about it.  Well it came back on ~0700 and at 0901 I got an email about an upgrade NEXT WEEK!! SMH.  Who knows what is going on.

I have been watching videos on how to make a sourdough starter and have learned soooooo much!!  My first one, I think, "died" but I am still feeding it to see if it will "rebound"; it did so well there for a while. So I started another one using bread flour (one vlogger said it was ok) and I think tomorrow I will start another one using the wheat flour as a base and feeding it with all-purpose (like the first one).  I am committed to try and make this work!!  I am NOT a good baker and it took me forever to finally make a good light loaf of bread; stuff like that tends to come out like hockey pucks.

The visit from the NP was very, very interesting.  This was a yearly "visit" (which I guess can be done as a phone call as it was the first time they did it last year) checking vitals, meds, needs, concerns, circulation, hearing, recommended vaccines and cognitive stuff.  She cruises also so we did talk about that a tad as she could see my memorabilia in my living room.  I asked the purpose of the home visit and she replied it is kind like a care coordination type function of my insurance; it had nothing to do with my surgery.  For me, it is a waste but I can see the importance for some who are not medically knowledgeable or financially challenged, food or housing insecure, etc. I was impressed. But I did get a very nice large insulated bag!!

Today I have to figure out how to fix a hose with a tear in it.  I know there is a way so I will need to go to the lumber store to get the stuff after I figure out exactly what I need.  And I am considering going back to the gym earlier than I planned.  My surgeon said I could after 6 weeks; he did not order PT for me saying my gym workouts pre-surgery left me in good condition and that is why I bounced back so well.  We will see; I am leery.

@Cruzin Terri and @StLouisCruisersI am glad you are both starting to feel better.

RIP Mr. Willie Mays.  You will be remembered as a great baseball player.

Happy Birthday to @SusieKIslandGirl's DH!

Thoughts for all in Ruidoso; so tragic and I hope it gets rain today.  Everyone in the "heat dome" and in the path of the tropical storm Alberto stay safe.  Cheers to those celebrating!

Good afternoon and Happy Juneteenth, an important day in history.  I grew up in Milwaukee, and they are having a big celebration there today.  My former church participates in the event.

It's another scorcher here today.  Thanks to all who participate here, I love the pictures!  Tonite is the season finale of Top Chef Wisconsin.  I haven't watched it, but 1 of the finalists has a famous restaurant in Milwaukee.  I think this episode was also filmed on The Eurodam.  The 1st episode was filmed at one of the big hotels that our Son in Law works for.  He watched the episode but didn't see much of the hotel.  I'm recording tonite...

My niece and her DH live in Tucson.  They saw the Spacex last night and shared a very cool picture!

@SusieKIslandGirlWish your DH a big happy birthday!

@StLouisCruisershoping your stomach feels better soon

@Cruzin TerriGlad to hear your test is negative

@Nickelpennygood luck with your starter.  I began this journey in April.  I'm using WW flour for my starter, seems to be doing well.  I'm not having luck with the bread.  I've looked at so many recipes and videos...the starter and ingredients are basically the same, but some have a little different technique.  I'm trying to figure out the best way, but I think it's a big science experiment.  "Rose" came out of the frig this morning.  I'm going to try something new today.  This baker says she's doing what the pioneer women most likely did...their lives couldn't be run by the bread making process!  🤭  I'm sure their process was much simpler...they didn't have to post pictures on social media....they had to feed their families!

@marshhawkgood luck with the kitties at the vet!

Prayers for all of the people in New Mexico affected by the fires.

We did our walk early this am, got my hair cut, and now I can go in the basement and work on the binding of the last 2 of 5 lap quilts for church!

Have a good afternoon, Karen

Okay having now done a connection to delta at jfk no way you can make a domestic flight from international arrival in one hour. International flights come into delta terminal b you then need to collect your luggage go through customs and then tsa and then either walk over one mile or take the bus to terminal a.  We did it without going through customs or tsa with wheelchair priority and it took about 1 hour.

I hope everyone is doing okay and thank you for the daily.

Thank you. In the olden days, when Customs usually opened and inspected at least one bag per person or family, it took a long, long time to get through. I also remember one time, still when paper forms were required for everyone, that a family hadn't filled them out because of not having a writing implement. The customs and immigration officer lent them his pen and had me come in front of them, but then he had to borrow my pen.

DH thanks everyone for the birthday wishes. His wish is that he was 76. 😅This year he reached 77. He's celebrating by mixing and pouring cement for porch footings. What fun! His gift from me is the November cruise I just re-fared and saved over $1000.

Good Afternoon, thanks for today’s daily fleet report.  Today is day two of the heat wave.  Yesterday we turned the ac on for the first time this season.  Thankfully the ac is working.  I woke up to some good news this morning, a cruising friend will be joining us in August.  Work was very quiet this morning.  The afternoon was planned time off so I’m sure I didn’t miss much.

Good afternoon from a very cloudy central Texas.  It is cooler today with a cooler breeze, but it is still humid.  It is 84F which is a nice change from 94F, but I think we'll be back in the 90s tomorrow or the next day.  As is typical this time of year, our forecast has changed, and we should be getting rain in just a few minutes and lasting for a couple of hours.  The worst of the weather from tropical storm Alberto will still keep to the south and west of us.  It looks like the sprinklers can stay turned off for a while longer.

Growing up in west Texas in the 50s and 60s, we did not have air conditioning.  At night, we used an attic fan to keep the house comfortable.  Our house was built in 1923, and had big windows in all the rooms which provided good air flow.  Sometime in the 50s, my parents added evaporative coolers (aka swamp coolers) and with the low humidity the house stayed pleasant.  I remember sometime before fall for 1957, we went over to a neighbor's house after they installed window units.  We couldn't wait to leave, because the house was too cold for us.  Even here in north central Texas it wasn't humid in the summers when we moved here in 1999.  We started getting humidity here about 2015.  When DH and I lived in Camden, SC, we installed an attic fan in our house, but I'm not sure if it would work there now.

Good morning. I walked the dogs very early as soon as it was daylight. They do enjoy their walks and it was very quiet in the neighborhood. Today it will be in the high eighties with increasing numbers in the next few days.  @kazu, Jacqui, I am also taking them to the groomers later and they will be happy to have less fur.

Our teenager wanted Mac and cheese with BBQ chicken for Juneteenth and I did get the groceries yesterday for that. He has started a summer job at one of the many restaurants on our main drag and was exhausted after his first weekend. There are a grand total of 19 bars and restaurants in our area within a mile and a half of each other. He and his girlfriend have a job at one of the bigger places and seem to like it. I did that work during college and have a life long respect for servers and the difficulties of the job. He was worried last night about dropping a big tray …..I told him that it was a valid worry because it does happen! As Maureen said recently, @RMLincoln, “ nobody died or went to jail”.

i have only been to Dutch Harbor with the various captains of “Deadliest Catch” but would love to see it in actuality. I love the recipe but fight with the phyllo dough when I make it. It is such a pain to make that I only do it for special occasions.

Wishing a very Happy Birthday to @SusieKIslandGirl’s DH!

Terry, I hope the teenager and girlfriend enjoy their summer jobs.

Forecast today is slightly better than feared, only 92!  Family is en route so it’s last of the prepping today. I’m excited they’re coming, DH’s son and his wife!  It’s great living closer to family!

I am just sickened reading about the South Fork Fire in the charming mountain town of Ruidoso NM. Over 1,400 structures reported lost yesterday, and that’s not the village yet, unclear if they can save it!  I’d often get to their annual EMS (Emergency Medical Services) conference, a very big to-do with 1,000 attendees, presenters from all over the country… EMTs from our fire department would often go together, rent a condo, attend pre-conference classes for our licensing credits. It was such a friendly town to host it, we loved their conference!  My heart goes out to them!  Prayers they and the firefighters pouring in from all directions can stay safe (one death reported yesterday). It’ll be a very long, dangerous and heartbreaking fight! My BBF who just bought a house in Maryland but hasn’t moved yet will be working in one of the evacuation centers. I guess Fire vulnerability is one reason I don’t live where we lived anymore…. which was in the northern N.M. mountains but also very vulnerable to a disaster such as this. (Our worst fire we worked there consumed 41,000 acres the first night, over an acre a second. Horrible. Friends lost homes but they worked the fire!) I know many of you deal with disasters … hurricanes, floods, tornados… so I think you understand. That’s where my heart is right now! 😓

pictures from yesterday viewed from the evacuation route. Been there done that. SO glad I’m safe but still overwhelmed.

Maureen, the pictures of the fires are horrifying.  We are keeping an eye on them since a neighbor is spending the summer at a rv resort in Mayhill, south of  Ruidoso.  By car they are 56 miles away, but as the crow flies, it looks to be closer.

Good morning, thanks for the Fleet Report and Daily!  Happy Juneteenth; a great day to celebrate.  Love Garfield; I see him in the comics section of our newspaper every day.  Sexual violence should be condemned and the perpetrators put behind bars for a long, long time.  I understand BSD is a computer operating system, but I hadn't heard of it before.

Another cool, cloudy morning out there for us; right now we're only 1 degree warmer than where @StLouisCruisers is, with a temp of +7C (44F).  Looking at the forecast, the clouds will be hanging around all day and we're only expecting a high of 17(62), so no A/C needed here.  Speaking of that, as a child I don't recall anyone having air conditioning in their homes.  Or cars.  I remember having a couple of small fans - one in the kitchen and the other in the living room, but that's all.  My brother and I slept upstairs in a 2 storey house and we always had all the windows open during the summer.

@SusieKIslandGirlplease wish Loren a very Happy Birthday with many more healthy and happy returns of the day!

@grapau27 the "restaurant" you frequent certainly has some nice desserts!  And main courses, too.

A few things on our agenda today - this morning I have to take DH across the city to get a follow-up echo-cardiogram, then at 1 I have to get my nails done; they're getting too long and I definitely need a gel fill.  I won't be able to drive DH to his weekly coffee date with his bandmates, so one of the guys will come over and pick him up.  I'll stop by after my nail appointment and bring him home.

I'm not sure about drinking straight gin with a hint of lime, but hey, I'll try anything once!  The wine sounds nice, as I do like some of the Chilean reds, but oh, the price is somewhat off-putting.  Spinach pie does sound like spanakopita, something I haven't made in years, a delicious dish.  DH said he's "cooking" dinner again tonight, so we'll be enjoying roast beef sandwiches from Tim Horton's at the table on the deck this evening.  And wine.

Prayers for everyone who is in need, in crisis, in grief, and in the paths of the horrifying fires in NM.  For those under the heat dome, try to stay cool and hydrate!  Cheers to all with celebrations happening today.

Smooth Sailing!  ☺️☺️☺️

Gerry

Gerry, I hope your DH's follow-up echo-cardiogram went well today, and shows an improvement in his heart function.

Good morning, or what is left of it.

I was up earlier and then went back to bed.

Had breakfast and then tested for Covid and am happy to report that the test was NEGATIVE.

While I am not feeling great, at least I am over the worst of it.  I feel very tired and will try to rest as much as I can.

Thank you all for your concern and prayers.

Terri

Terri, I'm glad you tested negative.  I hope you start feeling better soon.

As I indicated before I have been to Dutch Harbor/Unalaska 3 times.  The area is actually two islands connected by a short bridge.

My first visit was in 2007 (not 2010 as I said earlier).  It was on the Alaska Ferry Tustumena, leaving from Homer, turning around in Dutch Harbor, and returning as far as Kodiak.

We had several hours in Dutch Harbor and there was one lady with a van giving tours.  I got off in time to have a space on the van.  We went across the bridge to Unalaska and saw the main church there which is Russian Orthodox.

Dutch Harbor was quickly fortified in WW2, and we did stop at one of the bunkers.

My second visit was on the Crystal Symphony in 2013 on a transPacific from Kobe, Japan to Vancouver.  It was a Sunday and I was able to get a taxi in time to run me over to Unalaska and the United Methodist Church.

unalaskamethodist.jpg

After the service I briefly checked out the school.

Of course I had to check out the Fire Department:

Eagles abound there and this one landed fairly close to me.

1eagle.jpg

The walk back is a bit dusty and goes around the end of the airport runway.  There’s a visitor center at the airport terminal.  At some point I passed the fishing fleet.

My third visit was in 2016 on the Crystal Serenity Northwest Passage cruise from Seward to New York.  One of the sights is an old WW2 shipyard where there is almost always an eagle on one of the roof peaks.

Roy

Roy, thanks for your pictures from Dutch Harbor.  We enjoyed our two nights on Tustumena.

From Wikipedia

BSD began life as a variant of Unix that programmers at the University of California at Berkeley, initially led by Bill Joy, began developing in the late 1970s. It included extra features, which were intertwined with code owned by AT&T.

Several operating systems are based on BSD, including FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, MidnightBSD, MirOS BSD, GhostBSD, Darwin and DragonFly BSD. Both NetBSD and FreeBSD were created in 1993. They were initially derived from 386BSD (also known as "Jolix"), and merged the 4.4BSD-Lite source code in 1994. OpenBSD was forked from NetBSD in 1995, and DragonFly BSD was forked from FreeBSD in 2003.
BSD was also used as the basis for several proprietary versions of Unix, such as Sun's SunOS, Sequent's DYNIX, NeXT's NeXTSTEP, DEC's Ultrix and OSF/1 AXP (now Tru64 UNIX). NeXTSTEP later became the foundation for Apple Inc.'s macOS.

Linux is a close cousin.

Rich, thanks for the explanation of BSD.  I knew it was a computer language, but that was about all I knew.  I'm more familiar with Basic, Fortran, and Unix.

Good morning all!
It's a beautiful morning here, and a string of sunny days is in the forecast.  Mid 70's today, up to the high 70's Thursday-Saturday.

When DD and DS were small I had a Garfield cake pan I used for a few of their birthday cakes.

I'll pass on the meal and wine but would like to try the drink.  Dutch Harbor is on the itinerary for our cruise next summer.  This year's cruise was just there and reports are that there's one local transport-type shuttle for $50/pp (!) to take you a few miles....and no HAL excursions. Looks like our day there will be just to wander around on our own.  Thank you Roy @rafinmd for the great photos!

I think I'm over that flu-type whatever it was I had, thankfully it was short and mild.  You can take me off the care list Vanessa @JazzyV and thank you. 🙂

We have a few things to get done here today, both inside and out.

Happy 76th Birthday to @SusieKIslandGirl's DH!

@Cruzin Terri  Yay on the negative test!  I hope you feel much better soon.

Carolyn, I'm glad you are feeling better.  I hope you make it into Dutch Harbor.  It is an interesting place to see.

Good morning. Cooler and pleasant here with high's today predicted in the low 80's. We have a light cloud cover and possible showers are predicted for tonight with heavier rains arriving Thursday night. We shall see. I would love to be able to turn the sprinkler system off for awhile.

Have not been to the port of the day .... maybe some day.

Am watching the awful fires in New Mexico. I did a lot of archaeological work in that area back in my (much) younger days. It was so beautiful and I always loved Ruidoso.

Since I commented about little excitement here, Mother Nature evidently heard me and our mountain lions are back. We have several that evidently have a circuit they follow that includes the hill adjacent to my condo. I did not see them, but my neighbors did and called to warn me about taking the dogs out. Two of them.... probably a Mother and yearling son or daughter. I would rather deal with the bears.

Better get to work .... I need to put some gas in my car and run a couple of short errands. It is cool enough the dogs will enjoy a car ride.

Susan, we also have mountain lions or cougars in the hills around Quartzsite.  Some neighbors several summers ago, posted pictures of one lying on the fence.

Your story, Paul, made me laugh.  You'd think custom agents would have more than one pen.

Good afternoon. I'm back from tending to BFF and taking him some groceries.

@durangoscots Yikes on the mountain lions. Be safe when walking the dogs.

@Cruising-along I'm glad to hear you're feeling better.

@Quartzsite Cruiser Nice of your DH to supply us with photos.

@Nickelpenny With sourdough starter you might see a lot of activity within the first few days, but what you’re observing is bad bacteria, good bacteria, and yeast all fighting over one food source, your flour. This will die down, and people think their starter is dead, but it's not. After 7-14 days, the bad bacteria die off, leaving you with good bacteria and wild yeast. So don't give up, just keep feeding it. Some people make big starters, but that can use a lot of flour. When I was making mine, for feeding I used 20g of the old starter, 20g flour and 20g water.

Okay having now done a connection to delta at jfk no way you can make a domestic flight from international arrival in one hour.

Made be this update was for me?  I have two hours between my international arrival and my domestic departure on Delta at JFK.  After some research, it says 1 hour 40 minutes is the required time for this connection.  I have the Mobile Passport Control app that has saved me time in the past.  There doesn’t appear to be better flight times. 🤞

Thanks for sharing the pictures; I hadn't seen them. Such devastating fires are always difficult to see; having lived in Ruidoso, they are especially heart wrenching.

Prayers for all in the area and those battling the fire.

Relieved today is coming to an end; it's always a tough day as it's the anniversary (seems an awkward word to use) of the day my younger brother killed himself 💔 Supposedly time heals all wounds, but this wound remains raw. When does it get easier? Maybe by year 10, but year 6 isn't it😪

Brother the Older had chicken fried steak for lunch in honor of Brother the Younger and I drank fresh lemonade. Traditions and rituals can be odd, quirky things, but if they bring us peace they're exactly the right thing.

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers - it's been a tough day.

Baby furbabies did well at the vets.  They were seen by the vet PA.  They were weighed, all were over 2 pounds, they got their vaccines and  their flea meds (kitten variety) and they go back in 3 weeks.  When we got home I put all the big boys in the back and closed the doors to the den, kitchen and laundry room.  I took out one kitten at a time, put the flea meds on them and set them free. And off they went to play in Tiggers tube toy.   The PA did discover that Ollie had a hernia. Near the belly button.  Said it may play a roll in his health, but was not more forthcoming than that. Odd because Collard Greens has a hernia too.  Now I really wonder who his daddy is.

But then DH opened the door, he cant remember why, and I turned around and saw Furnando standing in the kitchen just watching 4 furbabies running around.  He was dumbfounded. And i put him back out, but then I noticed Tigger, the fiercest of the indoorians, chasing after the kittens.  What he didnt expect was that three of them turned on him, and chased him behind the wood burning stove.  He tried to get out on the other side, and Turnip had other ideas.  He got up on his hind legs and pounced on Tigger, in a forward leap with all his claws out on the front paws, and Tigger didnt know what to do. IT took two of us, to pick him up and get him out, but I really dont think he would have hurt them.  Its just that they now all had flea meds, the porch was swept and flea spray put down, and I vacuumed that up..  Nice clean room, all the bedding has been washed, the outside of the porch sprayed down too.  And where are they all sleeping ? On the floor, not on the nice soft blankets. Ahh, Kittens.  We have decided that as of tomorrow, the porch will be reopened for all, and the kittens can come into the house, full time. I am tired of air conditioning the outside world.

Tonight might be my last good nights sleep for a long time, and I dont sleep well anyway.
