We've only been to Icy Strait Point once, but I have to agree with previous posters who have raved about it.  It is an outstanding port stop--easily my favorite AK stop.

Similar to @kplady's experience with the guide on her tram tour, we had an outstanding guide on the Bear Search tour.  We took a bus and rode for about a half-hour out ot town.  We left the bus, were met by an armed escort and hiked a path into the woods.

After about a 10-15-minute walk we reached a river and viewed it from a platform.

No bears here.  So, we moved upstream to a second viewing platform.  No luck there, either.  However, as we approached a third (and final) viewing platform, our guide let out an excited shriek.  There was a bear.  Apologies for my pathetic photography.  We were not really very close to the bear, but my picture makes it look a lot farther away than he really was.

From the third view station it took us just a few minutes to return to the bus, which had moved.  On the way back to Hoonah the road crossed over the same river, and as we approached, the guide commented that the fact that there were numerous cars parked by the bridge suggested that there was a bear in the river.  Sure enough.  The bus stopped on the bridge,  Some people left the bus to get pics.  I just shot through the bus window.

Pretty cool, but in all honesty not as cool as the mink or the low-tide critters.  😀

Well, it happened.  We received a casino offer from HAL for a free inside cabin for various cruises - I saw that there was a 14 day Panama Canal cruise from San Diego to Ft Lauderdale at the end of January, so I called.  I wasn't happy with an inside cabin (in this day and age, if we're going to be quarantined on a ship, I want access to fresh air), so asked about upgrading to a verandah.  I was pleased with the price for an upgrade, so we're going to be heading to San Diego at the end of January to board the Zuiderdam for 14 glorious days in the sun and far away from the "frozen tundra".  Woo Hoo!

YAY 🙂. Good for you 👍. Have a fantastic escape from the frozen tundra at a good price 🙂   I hope you have a blast 🤞

I have been having an issue with the aide being on the phone most of the day. So much so, that the cardiologist office told us they kicked him out of the examination room . Now he put his phone into a Sam’s blue tooth in Sam’s car and I’ve asked him not to talk on the phone while he’s driving. He wasn’t happy with me. I can’t lose him since he does drive and that relieves my daughter. I would love my old life  back but that  isn’t going to happen.

Stay safe everyone,

Carol

Dam Carol.  I hope you can get him straightened out.  Hang in there.

So sorry you are going through so much 😔

Good morning, allDailyites!  I'm baaack.....  I'm not sure what the dinner will be tonight, I'll have to check the menu. oops, no menu, I have to make it myself.  (But it won't have sriracha, although DD loves it, it is too hot for me!)

Welcome home Ann 🙂. Take out might be a good idea for the transition from being waited on to reality 😉

@kb4683congrats on your 20 years on CC - wow!

Today I'm washing sheets and I wondered if any of you fold fitted sheets like I do.  I once saw Martha Stewart on a talk show (probably Regis and Kathie Lee) and she showed everyone how to do it neatly.  It involves getting those four corners lined up and then laying the sheet down on a flat surface to complete the job.  Sure makes your linen closet look neater!  I use a guest room bed next door to the laundry room to fold the sheets.  Here's a link to a video showing how to do it correctly.

I guess I’ve been doing it wrong all these  years. 😉  But it works 😉  I’ll definitely try this next time but I envision myself getting tangle up 😂

I love it. It is even more beautiful in person.
But the sizing is interesting. It fits me like a large from the waist up. But it fits me like a medium at the waist.

No one is going to believe me when I tell them how you made it.
Thank you again for making this happen!

@StLouisCruisersSandi, I'm hoping to find that out as well. Key West is one of the stops in December. We probably won't get off the ship whether it's Key West or Miami, but I just like to know.

@Horizon chaser 1957I thought the shirt was beautiful when you posted the picture of it, but wow, it is even more so when worn.

@cat shepardthat shirt looks fantastic on you.

Your itinerary says Key West is the first port after leaving Fort Lauderdale?  Maybe HAL is hoping the law will change but I would think they'd notify you of the stop in Miami in its place pretty darn quick.

The Miami stop was added at the last minute -- for whatever reason.  According to the Marine Traffic website, she was headed south and then turned back to make the stop.  I'd really love to know the reason -- the only thing that makes sense is Key West told them to stay away.  But why would that happen mid-sail??

That is exactly how I do it.

I have been to Icy Point Straight 3 times. The first time was in the 1980's and it was a nothing. Next 2 times a lot of fun. I particularly enjoyed a tram ride ( our guide told us he was a Tlingajo, half Tlinget and half Navajo) into the wilderness where we saw several bears and the folkloric dancing which is always a favorite of mine.

During the last month or so, I attempted to post some photos of the day’s port, only to find CC to be less than cooperative.  Things with CC seem to be better, so here’re some photos from Icy Straight Point from our 2017 Amsterdam cruise.  We walked around the packing house area and then took a whale watching tour.5AE0853B-A224-444B-9967-B89DAD527323.thumb.jpeg.e0af830ca2f7ce12f6279ac63841b7be.jpeg

Good evening. Thanks for the Daily and Happy Halloween!

Good days. I didn't carve a pumpkin and am not sure I every have. I'll try to increase my paltry psychic powers today.

Cute quote.

The meal sounds good, but I'm having steak and a baked potato. I'll pass on the Tom Collins and wine.

I've been to Alaska and cruised, but not Icy Strait Point. Thanks for all the pictures.

I'm late today. My new TV was installed this afternoon, and the old one carted away. The installers were masked (and wore booties, lol) as was I.

@cunnorl I hope you were able to have the Zoom call today.

@Seasick Sailor Great pictures of the Halloween costumes.

@1ANGELCAT I hope you get your results soon; waiting is hard. And that they are good!

@ger_77 Congrats on booking the cruise for January.

@mamaofami Sorry there are still issues with the aide.

@Vict0riann Welcome back! And thanks for your wonderful live thread.

@Horizon chaser 1957 It sounds like things are looking up for DD. Enjoy your upcoming trip!

@cat shepard The blouse looks lovely.

Prayers for the care list and cheers to the celebration list.

Stay safe and take care everyone.

Yes, we are on a 12 night which is really a 7 and 5 night B2B. So, the first stop of the 5 night is Key West and still says that on the Navigator App. There has been chat that people have just recently been notified for the same itineraries as ours in November that they will not be going to Grand Turk, the first stop of the 7 night or Key West. So, if the same is going to happen for our cruise we may not be notified until later in November. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I believe @NCTribeFanis also on at least one part of this cruise.

Oh my goodness, how I wish we were on that cruise!!!  I'm going to have to look into one for next year before all the good musicians are gone.  You know we lost Jay Black from Jay & The Americans just this week, right?

@Horizon chaser 1957that blouse is gorgeous, and @cat shepard you look wonderful in it!

@NextOneI think you did an admirable job on your pumpkin!

@cruzn single I'm happy to know someone else from the Daily will be on the ship with us!   I'll have to go over to the roll call and sign in.

Enjoy the trick-or-treaters everyone!

Smooth Sailing!  🙂🙂🙂

We had a blast yesterday at the pumpkin patch with DD, DSIL, the boys and their scout group.  It was more like a huge amusement park, I was amazed at how much they had to do for the kids.  At first we weren't sure we'd be able to go, because of all the rain lately their parking lot is flooded!  But thankfully they got us all parked up on a higher elevation.  They had everything from giant slides, "apple cannons", mining for gems, huge corn maze, and more.  And lots of food.  The scout group had reserved a firepit that we had to reach by finding our way through the muddy, slippery corn maze (not easy even with a map!) then we had hot chocolate and s'mores around the fire.  Fun day! The weekend is beautifully sunny, but the rain will be back again tomorrow for awhile.

Your reference to apple cannons sent me looking for Punkin Chunkin. We used to enjoy that broadcast. Lot’s of fun The trebuchets were my favorite.  It’s been a few years, and it looks like it’s gone.

That’s how I do it, too. I decided some 10 years ago we didn’t need to store a spare set.
