Good morning, all, Happy Saturday!  Thanks to Rich and Roy and the drinks ladies for the Daily news.  We also had good news yesterday, a Covid vaccination plan for BC has been announced (of course everything depends on getting the vaccine), we should get "done" next month as we are both over 80.

The eagle is hatching:

That is excellent news, Ann 🙂

Pies and Tarts are my favorite desserts. Apple and Pecan are the top pie choices although I'm pretty sure I haven't met a pie that I did not like (Rhubarb probably comes the closest). Butter Tarts are the hands down winners in the Tart world for me. Mitzi makes a good crust but I always seem to overwork mine. Thus I usually get a frozen or refrigerated crust - we have found a couple of pretty good ones. I have a recipe for pie crust using mayonnaise instead of butter that I want to try, probably with a quiche or meat pie. My mom used to make little tart-like things she called Tassies (you can find recipes online, I still have mom's somewhere if you are interested). They were like little pecan pies but the crust had cream cheese in it that gave it an interesting tanginess. I am thinking that the mayonnaise crust might be similar.

Continuing with yesterday's Grand Canyon theme, we stayed overnight at the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel in Williams, AZ and ate in Spenser's Pub. They have a pretty impressive bar, apparently it was built around 1887 in England (mom, dad, Mitzi, and Niall are in the lower left of the first picture) -

The next morning, after a somewhat silly "Wild West Show", we boarded the train to the canyon's south rim -

Good morning to all!  If I do a pie, it has to be a pre-made crust.  No longer even do that since pie for one would last forever!  Quilt day brings many happy memories because of 1 Grandmother and my GrandFather (from the other side of the family) who both made lovely quilts.  Now, I only have one made by my GrandFather late in his life.

Guess we are lucky in Western Colorado, as we got rain all night.  Helps the moisture problem and I don't have to drive in snow.  Glad you are getting H2O south of here, also, @durangoscots.

Not sure what is on the agenda today except laundry, so it is a good day to just stay in.

Prayers and shoutouts for the lists.  Have a great day everyone.

Thanks for the daily, Rich; I always enjoy reading it!  And love the Will Roger's quote.

Roy, thank you for your prayers list and thank you list as well.  Can you add to the prayers list that we pray for a quick distribution of the vaccine for us mature folks?  My governor is driving me crazy.  He opened vaccines to all over 65.  This really makes it difficult for we seniors over 75, since there are so many more in the 65 to 75 age group, who are not in as much danger of severe suffering or, worse, dying from this dreadful disease.  And yes, I have sent him an e-mail pointing this out, and requesting that he reconsider dropping the 65 to 75 year olds for the time being.

Here in BC, the next group is going to be the 80+ year olds, then they are going to go downward in 5-year increments.  That is, after they finish all the people living and working in care homes, and most of the indigenous population, who seem to be particularly vulnerable.

I have been checking a couple of times a day to get a vaccine appointment with the large hospital in our town.  This morning they showed a large number of vacancies starting this Monday.  Hopefully I got one for myself and my DW for 2:20 and 2:30 on Monday.  I say hopefully, as the website is a little wonky.  I easily got mine, but when I entered her information, it gave me another appointment ten minutes after the first one.  I think this is because I am a patient at one of their clinics, but the DW is not.  When I tried again to correct it, it replied that I was exceeding the number of appointments allowed.  Anyway, the good news is that it looks like they are getting much more of the vaccine this week than they had in the past.

Good morning, all! I love pie, although my handwriting looks a lot like I was rolling out pastry and writing at the same time. We don’t have a local quilt shop, but a few months ago I was in value village looking for a large pot for making bark dyes and found a gorgeous hand made wedding ring pattern quilt. It had appliqués of hand crocheted lace in some of the open spots in the design. It now lives in our guest room. I’m sure they had no idea what it was. It was in with the old blankets and very cheap, which is unusual there since it’s a for profit shop and not a charity fund raiser. The volunteers at any of the local charity thrift shops would have spotted the workmanship and priced it much higher!

A year ago today the Amsterdam took us to Punta Del Este, Uruguay. It is a tender port, and when I came out on deck at dawn the air smelt divine. It was flowers and sea and pine and eucalyptus. I wish they could bottle it! We had a wonderful day there, and toured the Ralli museum with it’s Salvador Dali collection. Then we walked the Rambla, and stopped for gelato. I would go back there in a heartbeat! The link to my blog post for the day is here, if you’d like to relive the trip: https://apassportinmyparasol.wordpress.com/2020/01/24/buenos-dias-punta-del-este-uruguay-january-23-2020/

Good morning. Thanks for the daily.

I'm more a cake person than pie.

I used to get complimented on my handwriting  (I still remember the green Palmer method cursive posters up around my Mother's 3rd grade classroom).

I am/was a quilter. I have one that I haven't touched in more than 10 years, and now in retirement sadly my eyesight isn't good enough to work on it (maybe if I can get this cataract out I will be able to).

The local health centers are out of vaccine. The county health department added over 65 to one site, and appointments were gone in 10 minutes. Unfortunately I didn't see the text until 20 minutes after it was sent.

Prayers for the care list and cheers for the celebration list.

Stay safe, social distance and wear your mask.

Good morning(ish), and thanks for the Daily.

Sad to hear about Larry King, and shouldn't every day be Pie day?

We watched the sun rise over Martinique four years ago.

Keep on keeping on, eventually they'll figure out how to get vaccine in arms more efficiently...we hope!

Have a great afternoon!

Thank you for posting your photos.  We're planning a 2-week road trip for May and will be visiting the Grand Canyon among other things.  We'll be staying in Williams too.  What are the pros and cons of taking the train vs just driving ourselves? We had planned on taking one full day to drive around the area.  We need to check on that wild west show too, we kind of like cheesy 😉  Thank you in advance!

Good morning and thanks all!   I like Rich’s drink recipe!
and pie!   My grandmother made excellent pie,  famous for her pineapple pie,  my aunt and son inherited that gene.   I can do ok,  but find it such a process making the pastry.  Love a good apple,  or strawberry rhubarb,  blackberry, fresh raw glazed blueberry....  anything except pumpkin.  @cat shepardthat lemon pie sounds amazing!  Ok, enough calories!
I always wanted to try quilting,  my grandmother belonged to a quilting circle,   And she crocheted.  So far sewing and embroidery are about it for me.  My mother made me exquisite Barbie doll evening gowns out of Egyptian brocade that she had leftover from work as a seamstress.
Nice memories!

Some photos from Crete,

Good Morning, All,

We finally have some rain here in SoCal. And it is light and nice and steady, so hopefully we will get some of it to soak in and replenish our wells. Our Golden Retriever is bugging us for a walk. He's a water dog and doesn't care if he gets wet, nor how much mud he drags in with those huge, sponge like paws.😒 Got chili con carne in the crock pot and may try to make a chocolate chip cookie pie, or just cookies later.

Like other places, our vaccine roll out has been slow. We have limited doses and so many who want them. They are still working on HCWs, congregate seniors and have opened a couple of PODs to those who meet qualifications. It will be a long road, but we will make it.

Yesterday i forgot to include this picture from the edge of the Weddall Sea.

I am late to the party today.  My handwriting is wicked. Of course, like many others, I learned the Palmer Method. Unfortunately, even though I write with my right hand, I use my left for everything else. I golf left . So my handwriting does not know what it wants to do. LOL.

Last nite I received a call from a friend who told me there were openings at the Convention Center in Orlando for the vaccine. I jumped on and was able to book #1 and #2 for myself and DH. So happy! Have to drive to Orlando next Saturday at 8pm . That is ok.

Admiralty Bay, St. George Island, Antarctica

We spent the morning hours in the sheltered waters of Admiralty Bay. This is one of the milder areas on Antarctica, and many countries maintain their bases here due to the “balmy” weather. The protection of the bay makes handling logistics easier. Of course that balminess is in comparison to the rest of Antarctica. Commentary continued as we made our way through the bay. Again we saw countless whales, seals, penguins and birds. Along the shore using binoculars, you could see the skeletal remains of some of the whales that had been butchered in decades past. It was cold and we had a bit of snow, and some fog.

About 10:30 we headed north to begin our transit through Drake Passage. Later, Captain came on the PA to tell us there was a low pressure system heading toward the Falklands, and as a result, we would be bypassing Stanley, and instead, sailing for Puerto Madryn, Argentina.

While it was disappointing, we were scheduled to share Stanley with a Princess ship. We would have had to run tender ops from a location further out, and the second ship meant fierce competition for shorex. Our private tour to Volunteer Point had already been changed to a different venue by the vendor, due to HAL frequently not making Stanley. We later heard that Princess had to forego Stanley also as the storm got pretty intense.

So that put our record for missed ports at 3 for the cruise: Puerto Montt, Ushuaia, and The Falklands. That was enough "unfinished business" to book another cruise to South America (which i did in 2018. I will share a bit of that when March comes rolling around. 😃 )

Thanks to Copper for answering my question yesterday, about why the HAL ships anchored off San Diego, were cruising up to L.A.(probable  a good 100 miles) for their service calls.  Copper does have his sources LOL.  Apparently fuel is much cheaper in L.A. and justifies the cost.  Now, if HAL would do some cruises out of L.A. 😄

Egg No. 2 now has a "pip"!  The eggs were laid about 4 days apart, and amazingly, the birds know how to delay incubation of the first egg, so the second can "catch up".

We went out to Butchart's for lunch,  It was frosty when we first arrived, the lawns were white, and very pretty, like a dusting of snow.  The bulbs are starting to poke their noses out of the ground, and snowdrops and winter jasmine were in bloom.  Very quiet out there, just a couple of dozen cars  (one from Manitoba, naughty, naughty.)

I noted yesterday that a year prior @Copper10-8 picked me up and dropped me off at the Crystal Serenity for my last completed cruise.  Today's sunrise is the first shipboard one of 2020.  The Crystal Serenity was headed west toward Australia on what turned out to be a somewhat stormy morning.
