The Fleet Report and Daily for Monday July 8th, 2024

Recommended Posts

Good morning, it's a quiet day here...more fireworks last night,

hoping they are done now. The drink sounds good, "maybe" on the meal, haven't been to the port.   Thanks for sharing all of the pictures.

@marshhawkprayers that you get good results from your scan.

More prayers for all in the path of Beryl.  I have an old co-worker friend in Houston, she says it's there now.  Over the weekend WI had a lot of rain and storms.  There was a dam that was breached not far from our up north house.  The dam was opened as far as it could be, but the earth next to the dam gave way.  There was flooding and evacuations, but all of the people were kept safe.  The videos look scary.

Have a good day, and stay safe from the heat and everything else going around.  Karen

Good late morning, everyone.

I felt fine when I got up this morning.  Took Rita out to do her business, but she is holding back.  After I posted the meal recipes I went upstairs to get dressed and got the shivers.  I had to pile on the blankets and was still shivering.  Took a Covid test and it was negative.  Heart rate is slightly elevated, Oxygen Sat rate is normal.  Temp earlier was normal and we'll see in a minute as I am retaking it.  Then I'll do blood pressure, but I don't expect anything serious there.  Oh, slight temperature.  I am really tired right now, but I think I'll take Rita out again to see if she'll do anything.  Sue woke up with a massive migraine, but Imitrex brought it under control.  Blood pressure 120/65.

This happened once before back in June of 2021.  I remember being very tired after the shivers went away and was fine the next morning.  I'm hoping for the same result.  DF John theorized it might have been an immune reaction to an exposure of some sort.

@quilty964 Karen, we had two dams collapse here back in 2020.  They were privately owned and the owners did not engage in any kind of maintenance.  It wasn't even a heavy rainfall.  Just the dams were done.  Fortunately, due to great planning for What If situations, everyone was evacuated and there was no loss of life.  People are still rebuilding.

@marshhawk Annie, I hope the CT scan results are good.  I'm glad you were able to reconcile with your father.  I'm not sure I would have done so.  You are a better person than I.

We were lucky and had, for the most part, a Leave it to Beaver childhood.  I remember Dad going off to family hour swimming in the summer with 22 kids in the back of the car.  IF they didn't go to the pool, they went to the park to play softball and Dad switched off with Mr. Smith on being all time pitcher.  None of the other dads in the neighborhood participated.

Good morning again from a wet and heavily overcast central Texas.  It is 75F and feels like 75F with 9 mph wind from the NNE, but from looking at the neighbor's flag it is not a steady wind or a 9mph wind.  The rain should be ending soon, but we're supposed to get more rain about 3pm.  The rain has cooled our temperatures, and our predicted high will be 84F.

I had enough problems with math 1.0 and will pass on math 2.0.  It's been a very long times since I had a freezer pop.  I still play games on my computer and tablet, but it's been quite a while since we had a video game.  We had the original Pong for years.

The quote is true no matter who said it.

The meal sounds good, and I like black been soup, which I get on BHBs.  I would prefer a traditional mimosa, and would like to try the wine.

We have visited Hong Kong at least three times,.

Vasco da Gama helped open the world to Europe with his explorations beginning in 1497.

@dobiemom  Marsha, please be careful in that excessive, and unprecedented heat.

@Heartgrove  Jack, I hope your DSIL has a good visit with the surgeon.

@0106  Tina, thanks for the information on today's quote.

@Haljo1935  Elizabeth, I'm glad we're both getting some much needed rain.  It looks like that is it for rain for the next two weeks.  Houston certainly doesn't need all that rain, especially since it floods with even a moderate rain.

@marshhawk  Annie, I hope the CT scan does not reveal any surprises.

MS Crystal,  ha ha. Y’all know my dinner cruise boat does not have that many seats! Besides, to day in Houston, I was unable to go on a lunch cruise. Thank goodness the dock floats but the dock ramp is missing!

It is good to see that today’s Port is Hong Kong so I can relive the few times we have been there we had a couple of wonderful days in Hong Kong on Nov 8 & 9 while on the Volendam .
Today I will just post what I think were some nice pictures from the first day without too much commentary , I had a tour with the 4 of us and a wonderful guide Mandy.

Good morning all!

Today will get to the low 90's, as will tomorrow, before we cool down to the 80's again.  Clouds may roll in next week, but no rain in the forecast.

I'm going to pass on everything other than the drink.  The Cranberry Mimosa sounds good! Both DS and DDIL have great positions in large international gaming companies, but I've never played.

Today will be finishing the laundry and hoping I don't get too much help 🐈 when I fold the clothes. 😉 Also need a few groceries, watering the yard as usual.  DH will be doing lamb chops on the grill.  Yum.

@cat shepard The Living in Florida meme is me.  Every single time I've been in FL I've felt like that!

@marshhawk Prayers for good news from the CT.  My heart breaks for you and others who had such difficult childhoods.  Sometimes I feel guilty for having led such a charmed life.  You're a good person, not sure I could have reconciled with your father like you did.

Debbie @dfish Oh my!  I'm worried about you.  Please let us know how you're doing the rest of the day.  Take it easy.

Prayers for all dealing with heat and hurricanes, also those dealing with health problems of themselves or family.

Good morning and thanks for the daily and fleet report.  I love math and am very good at it; most nurses are not.  I had to look up to see if there was difference between a freezer pop and a popsicle; I do like them and would keep these in the school's freezer for the kids:

"A freeze pop is a frozen treat very similar to a popsicle, but instead of being consumed off a stick, it comes in a clear plastic tube. The thin plastic pouch is about an inch thick and varies in length, though most are around 10 inches long."

ScreenShot2024-07-08at09_02_32.png.2f1451079d04d30671ce2adbcbc32cd0.png

I don't play video games, I don't understand the quote, yes to all the food and drink and I have been to Hong Kong many times, but not from a cruise.  I would go there to buy clothes as China didn't have clothes that would fit me - my feet are too big and I am not a size 2!  The laser show is wonderful.  I was there once when there were protests going on; that was a little scary (but I had to get to the Apple store!!).  And I was staying in one hotel when I came down and there were many tv cameras in the lobby.  Found out later, they thought Edward Snowden was there (but he wasn't).  Here are a couple of pics:

The protest:

Wow, Houston seems like it is really getting it.  Am watching some weather channel and the flooding looks horrible.  Glad no one is in its path.  We are still under an excessive heat warning with the high predicted to be 111F and they have extended it again until Wed night.  Humidity is low (23% presently) and it is 93F at 0915.  I think it is lovely - door open, fans going and enjoying my coffee.

Already got the conditional approval for my Global Entry and my "interview" has been scheduled.  I am surprised how easy this is.  And I have picked up my first subbing gig for the new school year.  There has been some come across the app but I was not interested in them.  This one is at the high school (music) so it should be fun!  I did make the instant pot bread (no knead) and thought maybe it didn't work as it seemed too hard.  But after browning it and letting it cool, I tasted it.  Yummy!!  And, I am again trying to make a sourdough starter.  After watching/reading so many "how to" things and buy unbleached flour and getting filtered water, I am in the 4th day and it is going well.  We will see; I will keep trying.

Sad to read of the bad childhoods of some; I was lucky in that I grew up with no violence in the family.  Not so for my kids, unfortunately, but their dad has not been part of their lives for decades.

Thoughts for all and cheers for those celebrating.  Off to clean and rearrange stuff and maybe some more cooking.  Have a great day everyone!

Good afternoon from beautiful but hot Port Charlotte.

Home from the golf course with today being pretty steamy but not as hot as last Friday.

Good selection of days.

Still trying to figure out the quote.

I’ll give the meal a try but not too spicy.

Hong Kong is a fantastic place, when I spent a year in Vietnam in 1968 I took my R&R in Hong Kong. I wouldn’t feel comfortable going back because the place is now under Chinese Communist control.

Have a great day and stay well.

Last spring before we went to cruise Alaska, I was having a lot of chest pain, so my heart doc ordered a series of x rays and said they saw something on my lungs, so he sent me to Dr Wu, who did an MRI and CT and they found out that I had a mass of nodules.  Not sure what the nodules were and he said I might need lung surgery instead of a cruise to Alaska.  I explained to him, that the trip to Alaska was necessary, and no one lives forever.  He gave me another month, put me on Trelogy took another test, and the nodules had broken up.  No mass. Of course, then I cruised, got bronchitis, got Covid, went to Europe, got RSV, and because of the mass, they need to CT me every year...wonder what damage was done in the past year. I should be able to see the results on my portal, but I explained that portals are only good on cruise ships. I dont play doctor and Dr Wu can explain it to me when I see him in August.

Math 1.0 1966 1 + .03= 2 packs Twinkies

Math 2.0 2024 1 + 3 + .27 =1 pack Twinkies.

I was never good in math, and no one can understand why I have a minor in physics.  Apparently I think outside mathematics.

For those who commented regarding last night's post.  My dad came across my mother's diary after she passed away, he called me and asked if I could fly to Boston for her funeral.  I told him that I thought they were going to wait until he had passed and have their ashes "blended " together, he said no. He had her Fedexed to Vermont once he read her diary.  He apologized for all the years of abuse, and yes, while there was damage done, I was his caretaker the last two years of his life. I was there when he passed away.  There were tears, and a huge, "
Thank God" moment, but driving back from Florida after he passed, i felt that I was visited by an angel who wrapped their wings around me, and said, "You survived this, and you are going to be OK."  It was a very unreal moment, but one that I will remember until my end.  And you know, I am OK.  I still get angry, but I know that for every action, there is a reaction, and it really all went back to "mom" and her own insanity.  I forgave my Dad.  I didnt forgive "mom" until I looked at the history of insanity in her own family.  My aunt helped me a lot.

If I hadnt spent so many years running away from my reality, I never would have all my stories to share.

I am glad that you were able to work things out with your Dad. I also was with my dad when he died and there was a minor apology at that time. Life can be so very strange.

I hope all was well with your test and that  your DH is able to eat a little today.

Good afternoon. Thanks for the Fleet Report/Daily @richwmn.

I like math; I minored in math in college. A freezer pop would be good today with the heat, but eating one always makes me cough, for some reason. I haven't played video games in many years. Interesting quote. Yes to the soup, maybe on the drink and yes to the wine. I have been to China, but I haven't been to Hong Kong. A salute to da Gama.

It's 86F and sunny, with rising humidity, and an air quality alert. They've opened cooling centers. I was up and out earlier to take BFF for his bone density test. And he told me the wrong place to go. Luckily they knew where we needed to go, and it was only about 10 minutes away. We were late, but they were able to still do the test. It was hot, and I was taking the knee scooter in and out of my SUV. Now I'm home having my coffee. I will be doing inside things due to the heat. I hope all Texas dailyites are ok, and I feel bad for those with home damage, flooding or no power.

@StLouisCruisers Great photos from Hong Kong.

@Heartgrove I hope there's an uncomplicated procedure option for DSIL.

@0106 Thanks for looking into the source of the quote.

@smitty34877 I hope the heat and humidity isn't too hard on Tana. Stay cool.

@Sir PMP Interesting posters.

@Seasick Sailor It looks like you had a nice brunch.

@rafinmd The fire station is lucky to have you with all that you've done for them over the years.

@Quartzsite Cruiser Quite the collection of interesting Hong Kong photos.

@marshhawk I'm glad the CT scan went well, except for the person doing the test. He sounds like the person when I went for my back MRI, who had no sympathy for my excruciating pain when laying flat. I hope all is better or at least stable on the CT. Hugs to you on your family memories.

@kazu It seems you've taken a big step toward your new situation.

@RMLincoln Happy Dance!!

@quilty964 Oh my on that dam breaching. But good news that everyone was safe.

@dfish I hope whatever is ailing you goes away quickly.

@sailingdutchy Nice photos, Tony.

@Nickelpenny Thanks for the photos. My roommate in college was from Thailand and she would go to Hong Kong for clothes. She was tiny, but had clothes tailor made.

Prayers for the Care List and Cheers for those Celebrating.

Good afternoon.  It is 80F and feels like 86F with a 16mph wind that could increase to 25mph later.  This morning we got 0.2 inch of rain, and it looks like that will be all we'll get.  Since we'll be heading back into the 90s beginning tomorrow with no rain in the foreseeable future, I won't be turning off the sprinkler system.

The news said there are 1.5 million people without power since Beryl made landfall.  The flooding in Houston is horrible, and it's made worse because Houston was built on a swamp with a lot of low lying areas.

Interesting quote today regardless of the origin..

Hong Kong was my disembarkation twice, both 2 times on BHB’s.  In 2012 I stayed a night or 2 after disembarking Zaandam.

Da Gamma was quite the navigator..

I’ll pass on the meal.  My alternative is Indonesian Risjsttafel Lunch as served on MS Prinsendam June 4, 2015.

..
It will be hot and humid today.  I have completed my walk and will have the usual errrands (UPS, perhaps grocery, and fire house this afternoon.  It will be a busy day at the fire house as I have an orientation with the new treasurer (I have been Treasurer Emeritus but de facto treasurer for several years and the new treasurer is learning but just been granted access to all the data he needs), then board meeting, and finally the annual meeting and elections.  I will probably not be on cruise critic after I heave for the fire house.

Roy

Roy, you do have a busy afternoon and evening at the fire station.  I'm sure all your work for the station is appreciated, and that you are relieved to be turning over the treasurer duties to someone else.

Good morning Dailyites

Whew, looks like it will just be a windy afternoon. Thankful Beryl is moving on. Stay safe!

My sister and friend went to Santa Barbara for 2 days for golf. Well, if you are watching news, there's fire and smoke up there. I don't know what they plan to do. With my sister's auto immune issue she shouldn't stick around.

Yesterday, we hosted my girlfriend's GD at the Florence Vineyard for brunch. There were 7 of us, and we all enjoyed our meals. She turns 6 on Wednesday.

Today, Allen has a lab for next week's nephrology appt. Then downtown for lunch. I have several options to make for dinner. We will see how full we are from lunch.

Thank you so much Rich, Debbie, Ann, Vanessa, and Dixie for your dedication to the Daily. And to Sandi and Lenda for the pictures from ports of the day. My goodness, is there any place you two haven't been?!!

Annie, I'm saddened by your situation growing up. It's tough to crawl out from under that horrible upbringing. I'll tell my story someday, but not today.

Prayers for each of our friends and family here on the Daily.

Tana: EAT!!

Love and blessings for a healthy,  happy, safe week. God bless!!

Joy thanks for the pictures of your brunch yesterday.   That is a big scorpion, and I'm glad it was caught in the spider web.  So far, we've only seen one baby scorpion this year, and I hope it's the only one.  Ironically, we see more here than in Quartzsite.

CT scan went well, I survived, the personality of the person who ran the test needed to at least like a happy person. I was the second person in, and he already had ....attitude.  Wonder what happened with the first person.

Annie, I hope the CT scan results show the nodules are still gone, and there was no damage since the last scan.  I'm glad you were able to reconcile with your father and forgive him, more for your sake than his.  I am glad he was big enough to apologize.  I'm sorry for all the bad years and the years spent running from your reality, but I'll confess, I do enjoy all your interesting life stories.  While painful, I think it also made you the strong, compassionate person you are today.

Thanks for our Monday Daily Rich and thanks to our F & B contributors.

Interesting collection of days.  I used to love freezer pops when I was a kid oh so many years ago.  I do like the quote no matter who made it.  Thanks Tina @0106 for the input on it.

I’ll pass on the meal and the wine (red) but the drink sounds interesting.  I have a suspicion we will be trying some of them next year on our TA with the way some of the roll call is talking 😉

Late to the party today - early morning appointment so I was up bright and early this morning to take care of Ivan’s schedule.  Well, that was one big FAIL.  My lawn company showed up to put pesticide on the lawn while I was upstairs so Ivan only got one thing done outside and was going to have to wait until the heat dried up the grass.  What a GOOD dog.  He held it patiently and just went out to do his business.  It seems dry but I wiped his paws to be on the safe side.  normally I would just walk the dogs but my legs wouldn’t tolerate that for sure.

So grateful and relieved to hear that Daily-ites reporting so far have been spared the worst of Beryl.  I pray it stays that way and for everyone in beryl’s path.

I cut the biggest cheque I have written in a very long time and off it went in the mail to my new home.  It’s so rare to write cheques these days - I’m just glad I still had some and remembered how.  LOL. 😂

Prayers for those on the Care list and those that need them.  Cheers to those celebrating and cruising

Jacqui, I'm glad you are one step closer to your new home with sending the check today.  I firmly believe you and Ivan will be happy there since you will have each other.

Debbie, I hope you feel back to normal by tomorrow.

I am glad that you were able to work things out with your Dad. I also was with my dad when he died and there was a minor apology at that time. Life can be so very strange.

I hope all was well with your test and that  your DH is able to eat a little today.

Terry, I'm sorry your childhood was difficult, but I'm glad you were with your dad when he died and got a small apology, which I think was good for you.

Stay cool.

@Sir PMP Interesting posters.

@RMLincoln Happy Dance!!

@quilty964 Oh my on that dam breaching. But good news that everyone was safe.

@dfish I hope whatever is ailing you goes away quickly.

@sailingdutchy Nice photos, Tony.

@Nickelpenny Thanks for the photos. My roommate in college was from Thailand and she would go to Hong Kong for clothes. She was tiny, but had clothes tailor made.

Prayers for the Care List and Cheers for those Celebrating.

Vanessa, I hope your BFF bone density test results are good.  Thank you for the nice comment about my pictures.

Karen

Karen, I'm glad everyone was safe after the dam breach.

We've only been to Hong Kong since the British returned it to China.  We have cruised to several ports in China, and taken the high speed train from Tianjin into Beijing on our own.  As foreigners visiting their country, the Chinese people have treated us very well.  I don't agree with their government, but the people are nice.  I'm not sure if we'll go to Hong Kong again, but I've read that since the Chinese government cracked down on the city, the tourist areas are still nice places to visit.

Carolyn, I was also feeling a bit guilty yesterday about having a good childhood in spite of my mother's illness and having a close relationship with my father.  It is sad that some parents cannot or will not treat their children well, which is something I find difficult to understand.

I hope if anyone makes the black bean soup, they don't come across this fellow.

Good day and thanks all, I must try that thai salad!
Thanks so much for the photos of Hong Kong, it has always been on my list,  but when we had it booked two Canadians were taken hostage and I doubt we’ll ever go now.
@dfish hope it’s just a little blip!  I had a similar thing with a high fever and teeth chattering and felt fine the next day.   Who knows?
@marshhawk glad you were able to reconcile,  hoping you get good news.  Time for some boring!

@kazu I’m sure that felt good!  Nice to have things in place!
Glad DSIL got back from the branch office in Houston last week.  Hope there is no loss of life!

We are in a heat dome,  going to 34 tomorrow!  Eek we’re not used to this!  Thank goodness for air!

Heart rate coming down, oxygen saturation going up.  No shivers at this point.  Just a bit of a headache.  Temperature down.  I think it is like the last time.  I'll just take it easy today.

That is great news 🙂. Hope you continue to improve 🤞

I may have missed it - what is your move date? Or is it dependent upon when you sell?

Move date is tentatively September 1st.  they needed the cheque to hold the apartment.  If I change my mind they will return it.  Agreement comes in August.

I don’t know the exact date.  Janette is meeting with the movers of the current occupants to determine when all will be out and then of course, they have to clean, sanitize, paint, potentially replace carpets and put in my bath tub.  I will know when it will be ready in a couple of weeks.

I’d prefer to have the house sold if possible but no, it doesn’t have to happen.  I have resources I’d rather not use but they are there.  the house isn’t even on the market yet.  there’s stuff that has to be done first.

Texas weather, you either love it or hate it, but also accept the fact it is unpredictable at times.  Two hours ago, there was no rain forecast for the rest of the day.  Then all of a sudden a storm popped up with blowing winds and heavy rain.  It's slowed down considerably, but in just a few minutes, it dumped another 0.2 inch of rain.

Who knows?

Jacqui, I hope everything goes smoothly and you are settled in your new home before your fall cruise.  I hope you can get the house ready and sold before the move, but glad it's not absolutely necessary.

Today has been a full day here at the FR&D - I will save my contribution to the family dynamics conversation (🤗 ❤️ to all who shared) for another day and WOW on all the great pictures. Hong Kong has never been on my list, but I'm quite enjoying all the pictures, so huge thanks to everyone for sharing.
